•Irony is a rhetorical device that
expresses an opposite meaning
typically for a humorous effect.
3. TYPES
• 1.) Verbal Irony - occurs when a speaker's intention is
the opposite of what is being said.
• 2.) Dramatic Irony – occurs when the audience is
aware of something that characters are not aware of.
• 3.) Situational Irony – occurs when the opposite of
what is expected to happen, happens
4. EXAMPLES
• After drinking the tea that actually tastes
awful, she said, “Wonderful. I will never forget
this.”
• In Romeo and Juliet, the audience knows that
Juliet is only asleep-not dead-but Romeo does
not, and he kills himself.
• The Directress of the orphanage is mad at
children.
