Audience
1. How did you attract/address your audience? MEDIA – PIERS JONES
2. INVESTIGATION A common reason for characters suddenly becoming victims is them investigating. The audience know this is a bad idea, and their natural response is to try and somehow ‘warn’ them. Since they are unable to do so, they are forced to watch and faintly hope the character survives. This is why many horror films use investigation.
3. THE UNKNOWN Like I said in a previous post, people tend to fear the most what they can’t see. We used this at various points in the film, which makes the audience ask questions: The opening shots show no life: WHY IS THERE NONE? The main character is running from ‘something’ at the beginning. WHAT? WHERE IS HE GOING? The main character was just dragged down the stairs: BY WHAT? The ‘zombie’ who lunges for the camera/character: WHAT IS IT?
4. CLIFFHANGERS We used two cliff hangers in our film. The first was when the main character was dragged down the stairs by ‘something’, the other when the zombie character at the end lunges at the camera/character. Cliff hangers make the audience want to stay and find out the fate of the character. The second cliff hanger is to maintain the worry that the audience hold and to keep the audience thinking about the film after it has finished.
5. INTRODUCTORY SHOTS The intro shots at the start are of various scenes in the world which the audience would expect to contain life: a road, a town, and a house. The shots establish a fear in the audience: “What happened to everybody?” We also used copyright free piano music to create a feeling of loneliness. Combined with the intro shots, there is a fairly profound effect of sadness.
