The 96-97 season was Popovich’s biggest challenge in his career. They started
the season 3-15 and David Robinson was out with a broken foot. Other players
missed a significant amount of games. At the end of the season the Spurs only
won 17 games. However, this negative later turned into a positive when they
drafted Tim Duncan first overall in the 1997 draft.

For this upcoming season Popovich expects Kawhi Leonard not to hold back
this season. He is also worried about his team being satisfied with last year’s
