Brief summary The purpose of the two day conference was to bring together scholars from the different disciplines such as
sociology, economics, social sciences, history, regional studies who are interested in applying new
technologies such as GIS, Text Mining and other newer technologies to their research on religion.
Critique: The conference presented the audience with the amazing breadth of GIS applications and the amount of
analytical capacity this technical tool brings to the researchers. The conference was highly specialized and
quantitative. My experience with statistics class and GIS desktop applications and methods class made
attending this event a fun and worthwhile. This conference also featured research papers particularly
interesting to me was using geocoding of audio files fromlegendary orators of Bengal historians. The research
papers increased my fascination towards GIS as well. Credit Hours: 09

Brief summary The workshop presented a solid understanding of health informatics, its impact and future, expert guidance on
interoperability issues, standards, new wireless technologies, research opportunities and a very good
networking opportunity. Some of the top leaders fromthe government, Academia and policy groups discussed
the leading edge ideas and developments in the field of Healthcare IT. The workshop was aimed at C-level
managers, healthcare providers, executives and administrators, researchers and students interested in keeping
pace with the developments in HIT.
Critique The workshop was unique and remember able because of few very good reasons: Firstly it was structured like
a walkthrough model where Health IT stakeholders would get an excellent chance to cover all the domains of
healthcare delivery where IT could have potential impact. It covered a range of domains from workforce
training to policy development to resource sharing. For e.g. A physician would get a thorough understanding of
how his practice or his reimbursements or even his patient communication would be impacted in the new
regulatory scene. The workshop also beautifully explored the avenues for the stakeholders to advance their
respective careers through use of IT. The workshop was especially commendable as it proved to be free from
industry or market forces and was solely geared towards enhancement and professional development of its
intended audience. The workshop had been the most value preposition of all the 2010 events attended.

The symposium was divided into various educational tracks ranging from Health IT to Public Health
infrastructure. It covered broadly all the sections of public health and provided the audience latest scientific
and specific data on the subject.
Critique The symposium opened with keynote address by Assistant Secretary of Health Dr. Howard Koh delivering
Luther Terry Lecture. Dr. Benjamin, Surgeon general described her vision for obesity control and shared her

Speaker(s): Jonah Frohlich, Deputy Secretary – HIT, CHHS, Dr. Elaine Batchlor, CMO, L.A Care Health Plan
Date: June 29, 2010
Location: L.A. Care Health Plan, 555 W Fifth Street, Gas Company Tower, Los Angeles
Sponsoring Org. L.A. Care Health Plan
Brief summary The seminar presented an overview of California Statewide HIT and HIE initiatives, other California state
level impact of HITECH legislation and overview of Administration’s efforts to achieve statewide electronic
health data exchange, uniform interoperability standards and adoption of health information technologies
Electronic Health Record (EHR) meaningful use incentive programs. The role of Regional Extension Centers
(RECs) & L.A. Care’s HITEC-LA ( REC for LA county) was specifically addressed.
Critique The seminar provided the intended audience with the then uptodate knowledge about HITECH implementation
in CA and also a good overview of HITECH program. The three legged stool concept for HIT was presented
beautifully and concisely. The event was however not comprehensive and detailed in briefing about operations
of the participating entities. There were some notable areas where the event could have concentrated more to
make it a high impact educational event. The event seemed geared towards the needs of ‘C’suite only and
lacked addressing a broader audience. When building up HIT workforce it is of paramount concern that the
event organizers provide supplemental reading material pre-event so that maximum equity could be achieved
from the event. Secondly specific resources could have been shared and last but not least presentation slides
posted online and shared with attendees would have been of immense value.

Brief summary The purpose of the two day conference was to bring together scholars from the different disciplines such as sociology, economics, social sciences, history, regional studies who are interested in applying new technologies such as GIS, Text Mining and other newer technologies to their research on religion. Critique: The conference presented the audience with the amazing breadth of GIS applications and the amount of analytical capacity this technical tool brings to the researchers. The conference was highly specialized and quantitative. My experience with statistics class and GIS desktop applications and methods class made attending this event a fun and worthwhile. This conference also featured research papers particularly interesting to me was using geocoding of audio files fromlegendary orators of Bengal historians. The research papers increased my fascination towards GIS as well. Some of the top leaders fromthe government, Academia and policy groups discussed the leading edge ideas and developments in the field of Healthcare IT. The workshop was aimed at C-level managers, healthcare providers, executives and administrators, researchers and students interested in keeping pace with the developments in HIT. Critique The workshop was unique and remember able because of few very good reasons: Firstly it was structured like a walkthrough model where Health IT stakeholders would get an excellent chance to cover all the domains of healthcare delivery where IT could have potential impact. It covered a range of domains from workforce training to policy development to resource sharing. For e.g. A physician would get a thorough understanding of how his practice or his reimbursements or even his patient communication would be impacted in the new regulatory scene. The workshop also beautifully explored the avenues for the stakeholders to advance their respective careers through use of IT. The workshop was especially commendable as it proved to be free from industry or market forces and was solely geared towards enhancement and professional development of its intended audience. The workshop had been the most value preposition of all the 2010 events attended. Care Health Plan, 555 W Fifth Street, Gas Company Tower, Los Angeles Sponsoring Org. L.A. Care Health Plan Brief summary The seminar presented an overview of California Statewide HIT and HIE initiatives, other California state level impact of HITECH legislation and overview of Administration’s efforts to achieve statewide electronic health data exchange, uniform interoperability standards and adoption of health information technologies Electronic Health Record (EHR) meaningful use incentive programs. The role of Regional Extension Centers (RECs) & L.A. Care’s HITEC-LA ( REC for LA county) was specifically addressed. Critique The seminar provided the intended audience with the then uptodate knowledge about HITECH implementation in CA and also a good overview of HITECH program. The three legged stool concept for HIT was presented beautifully and concisely. The event was however not comprehensive and detailed in briefing about operations of the participating entities. There were some notable areas where the event could have concentrated more to make it a high impact educational event. The event seemed geared towards the needs of ‘C’suite only and lacked addressing a broader audience. When building up HIT workforce it is of paramount concern that the event organizers provide supplemental reading material pre-event so that maximum equity could be achieved from the event. Secondly specific resources could have been shared and last but not least presentation slides posted online and shared with attendees would have been of immense value.
