 Reading a poem for the first time ought to be a little like
meeting a person for the first time. An initial explaratory
conversation may lead to friendship, dislike, indifference,
or any of other shades of attitude from love to hate.
 If the relation progresses, it will gain in intimacy as
surface politeness is replaced by exchanges of ideas and
feelings at a deeper level.

TACTfulness in Poetry
- With poems, as with people, our first response to the puzzling
should be a polite effort to eliminate misunderstanding.
 - we need not adopt any false reverence before the poems of
earlier ages.
 An old poem may be as much of a bore as an old person.
 But we should treat the aged with genuine politeness, paying
attention to their words, trying to adjust to their idiom. This may
turn out to be very rewarding, or it may not. But only after we have
understood are we entitled to reject –or accept– any utterance.
 English language has changed considerably over the centuries and
continues to change, we must often make a greater effort to
understand an older poem than a modern one.
 Also, notions of what poetry is and should be have changed in the
past and continue to change.

linguistic equipment or under the same rules.
 - the difference between a love lyric by an Elizabethan sonneteer
and a contemporary poem of love may be as great as difference
between Elizabethan tennis and modern tennis.

court which required great finesse to master all its angles.
 The modern game is flat and open, all power serves and rushes to
the net, which ought to remind us that Robert Frost likened free
verse (verse with unrhymed, irregular lines) to playing tennis with
the net down…such a game would make points easy to score but
would not be much fun to play.
 Poetry, like tennis, depends on artificial rules and hindrances.
These arbitrary restrictions are what give it its game like quality.

 Unlike the rules of tennis, however, the rules of poetry have never
been written down. Although, critics have frequently tried to
produce a “poetics” that operate like a code of rules, they have
always failed because poetry is always changing.
 - in fact, poetic “rules” are not really rules but conventions that
change perpetually and must change perpetually to prevent poems
from being turned out on a mass scale according to formulas. Every
poet learns from his predecessors, but any poet merely imitates
them produces flat, stale poems. A poet is above all a man who
finds a unique idiom, a special voice for his poetry.
 The tactful reader quickly picks up the conventions operating in
any particular poem and pays careful attention to the idiom of
every poet, so that he can understand and appreciate or criticize
each separate poetic performance.
 It is discussed to acquire tact. Tact cant be taught because it is of
the spirit. Tact can be developed and refined through conscious
effort.
