Possessive Adjectives
The possessive adjectives in English (also called 'possessive determiners')
are: my, your (singular), his, her, its, our, your (plural) and their.
They clarify who or what owns something.
For example:
I have a hat - this is my hat.
You (singular) have a book - that is your book.
He has a bike - it is his bike.
She has a cat - it is her cat.
The dog has a bone - it is its bone.
We have a house - it is our house.
You (plural) have a car – it is your car.
They have a son - she is their son.
20
Possessive Adjectives
A common mistake: its vs. it’s
A common mistake is putting an apostrophe in the possessive adjective its.
It is easy to confuse its with the contraction of it is, it’s, which does have an
apostrophe.
Remember, though, possessive adjectives never use apostrophes!
Incorrect : The boat lost it’s mast in the storm.
Correct: The boat lost its mast in the storm.
Incorrect: Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.
Correct: Don’t judge a book by its cover.
