2. 1. Transaction Processing System
-A transaction process system (TPS) is an information
processing system for business transactions involving the
collection, modification and retrieval of all transaction data.
Characteristics of a TPS include performance, reliability
and consistency.
-Also known as transaction processing or real-time
processing.
3. Where is it being used?
- TPSs are often used when producing or recording things
like pay checks, invoices, student tuition bills and payment
reminders.
- Used in a business’s accounting/billing department and
also to keep their record system.
4. Examples of TPS
- Examples of transaction processing systems are the
systems used by banks and credit card companies to track
customer's purchases using these cards.
- Other examples are ATM and Ticket reservation systems.
5. 2. Office Automation Systems
- Office automation system is an information system which is
computer based that collects, processes, stores and
transmits electronic messages.
- Office automation is intended to provide elements which
make it possible to simplify, improve, and automate the
organization of the activities of a company or a group of
people.
6. Where is it being used?
- Used to digitally create, collect, store, manipulate, and
relay office information needed for accomplishing
- Exchange of information
- Management of administrative documents
- Handling of numerical data
- Meeting planning and management of work schedules
7. Examples of OAS
- Document Management (Contract tracking database)
- Office Automation (Bar-code Software Library)
- Office Support System
8. 3. Knowledge Work System
- The Knowledge Work System (KWS) is a computer
application designed to help “knowledge workers” to
capture and organize work activity information, and to
learn, prioritize, and execute their tasks more efficiently
and effectively.
- KWS integrates methods and technologies from the
disciplines of information management, workflow, work
scheduling, software agent, and work measurement into a
“Performance Support Environment.”
9. Where is it being used?
- Employee performance evaluation system
- Contract requirements and monitoring
- Monitoring budget execution
- Property usage reporting
10. Examples of KWS
- CAD/CAM systems: Computer-aided design (CAD) and Computer-aided
manufacturing (CAM) systems automate the creation and revision of
designs, using computers and sophisticated graphics software. They provide
engineers, designers, and factory managers with precise manufacturing
control over industrial design and manufacturing
- Virtual reality systems: These use interactive graphics software to aid drug
designers, architects, engineers, and medical workers by presenting
precise, three-dimensional simulations of objects.
- Investment workstations: These are high-end PCs used in the financial sector
to analyze trading situations instantaneously and facilitate portfolio
management.
11. 4. Decision Support System
- A Decision Support System is a computer-based
information system that supports business or
organizational decision-making activities.
- Decision Support System serve the
management, operations, and planning levels of an
organization and help to make decisions, which may be
rapidly changing and not easily specified in advance.
- Decision Support System can be either fully
computerized, human or a combination of both.
12. Where is it being used?
- DSS uses the summary information, exceptions, patterns
and trends using the analytical models.
- Clinical decision support system for medical diagnosis.
- Bank loan verifying the credit of a loan applicant
- Analytical models
- Specialized databases
13. Examples of DSS
- Status Inquiry System: helps in taking operational management level or middle level
management decisions, for example daily schedules of jobs to machines or machines to
operators.
- Data Analysis System: needs comparative analysis and makes use of formula or an
algorithm, for example cash flow analysis, inventory analysis etc.
- Information Analysis System: In this system data is analyzed and the information report is
generated. For example, sales analysis, accounts receivable system, market analysis etc.
- Accounting System: keep tracks of accounting and finance related information for
example, final account, accounts receivable, accounts payables etc. that keep track of the
major aspects of the business.
- Model Based System: simulation models or optimization models used for decision- making
used infrequently and creates general guidelines for operation or management.
14. 5. Executive Support System
- An Executive Support System is software that allows users
to transform enterprise data into quickly accessible and
executive-level reports, such as those used by
billing, accounting and staffing departments.
- ESS is also known as Executive Information System(EIS)
15. Where is it being used?
- Financial and statistical data to better manage specific
departments
- Marketing System
- Manufacturing System
16. Examples of ESS
- The main example of an executive support system is the
Cambridge Systematic. This system is combined with the
investment plan in the Ministry of Transportation in Canada
- Executive Support System developed by Meditech, which
is useful to health care organizations.
- Pre-designed Executive Support System
17. 6. Group Decision Support System
- Group decision support system technology supports
project collaboration through the enhancement of digital
communication with various tools and resources.
- GDSS is used to support customized projects requiring
group work, input to a group and various types of meeting
protocols.
18. Where is it being used?
- Class of electronic meeting systems
- A collaboration technology designed to support meetings
- Group work
- Meeting protocols
19. Examples of GDSS
- Lotus Notes
Store, manipulate, distribute memos
- Microsoft Exchange
Keep individual schedules
Decide on meeting times
- Net Documents Enterprise
Two people can review the same document together
