OF
ANDAMAN
AND
NICOBAR
ISLANDS
The People of Andaman can be broadly categorized into two groups viz.
Indigenous or Aborigines and Immigrants or Settlers. Prior to 1858, the
Andaman Islands were inhabited by Autochthons only and with the founding
of Penal Settlement at Port Blair after Indian Mutiny, Non-autochthons came
to inhabit these Islands. Indigeneous People of South Andaman
The Aborigines of Andaman Island consist of the following four tribes:
•Great Andamanese
•Onges
•Jarwas
•Sentinalese
3. FLORA OF ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR ISLAN
These Islands are blessed with a unique’
luxuriant evergreen tropical rainforest
canopy, sheltering a mixed germ plasm bank,
comprising of Indian, Myanmarese,
Malaysian and endemic floral strain. So far,
about 2200,varieties of plants have been
recorded out of which 200 are endemic and
1300 do not occur in mainland India. ”The
South Andaman forests have a profuse growth
of epiphytic vegetation, mostly ferns and
orchids. The Middle Andamans harbours
mostly moist deciduous forests.
4. FAUNA OF ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR
ISLANDS
The Andamans are home to some of the richest varieties of
flora and fauna, with 86% of the Andaman & Nicobar
islands covered in primary tropical rainforests. Of the 2000
plus species of plants that grow on the Andaman & Nicobar
Islands, at least 1,300 are exclusive and not found in
mainland India.The Andaman and Nicobar islands are home
to nine national parks and nearly a hundred marine and
wildlife sanctuaries that offer extraordinary experiences
and diverse ecosystems. Interview island, 3 hours off
Mayabunder, houses the largest wildlife sanctuary in the
Andamans.

Lieutenant Governor
Admiral Joshi has served in a
variety of command, staff and instructional
appointments.His commands at sea include
guided missile corvette INS Kuthar, guided
missile destroyer INS Ranvir and the aircraft
carrier INS Viraat, during which he was
awarded Nausena Medal, VishistSeva Medal
and YudhSeva Medal respectively
