Lean: From Theory to Practice — One City’s (and Library’s) Lean Story… Abridged
Costume and props
1. Costume and Props
For my musicvideoIwill have one protagonistonshow atall time, exceptforshotswhere Iwill be
establishingthe scene.ThismeansthatIshall have a setcostume thatdoesnot change throughout
thismotionpicture.Aswell asthis Iwill alsobe usingpropsto go withthe costume, toadd emotion
and meaningtothe lyrics,as well asfurtheraddingtothe story line.
Thisscreengrab fromBlake’smusicvideoRetrograde,whenlookingatthe emotional aspectsof the
song,Blake’ssongcouldarguablybe reflectedintothe costume thathe iswearing.Despite beingan
artistin a genre where fastmusicisfrequenthe haswornmellow colouredclothing, whichgoeswell
withthe beatof hissong.I have chosento follow the similarconventionthatBlake has, forexample
hisblue coat, whichcouldsuggestsorrow (heardinthe lyrics‘’you’re alone now’’), Iwill alsouse a
colour,similarorthe same.
Whenlookingatthe coat that myprotagonistwill wear,Ihave chosentoput
themintoa donkeyjacket,whichisa traditional coatwornbythe British,
potentiallyfarmersorpeople doalotof walkinginforests.Thiswillfitwell
withmyscenes,as itis a warm jacketwhichyouwill be able towearout inthe
forestandbe warm. The colour blackwill representthe darknessthatthe
protagonistfeelstowardsthe girl thathe issingingabout.Preferably,he will
have a collaron the coat whichwill suggestashadynature towardshim,
makingthe audience questioningwhythe girl haslefthim.
Whenlookingatwhat the protagonistwill be wearingonthe bottomhalf of
hisbody,I feel itisimportanttofollow the trendthatthe target audience does
as theywouldmirrorwhatJamesBlake wears,therefore attractingtowatch
the video. Ihave decidedtoput myprotagonistinblackskinnyjeansasit
furthershowsthe emotionof emptinessandsorrow,whichwouldfurther
match the song. Aswell asthisit wouldalsofollow the conventionsthat
JamesBlake hasfollow,asduringinterviews,photoshootsandlive concerts
he has beenwearingthe trademarktightblackjeans.
2. Footwearthatmy protagonistwill weardoesnotmatteras
much as the othergarments,as itwill notbe as visible.
However,forsafetyreasonsdue toterrainIhave decidedto get
a pair of army boots, inorder to have a full griponthe ground
whichcouldbe slipping,due toneededweathersettingforthe
film.Howeveritcouldalsoworkoutthat the bootsreflectthe
raw personalityof the protagonist, showingthathe isnot afraid
to wearsomethingthatmaynot make himpopularintoday’s
day andage.
I will notbe usingmanypropsduringmy musicdue to the rural setting. However, despite the
impracticalityof bringingalotof propswithme,I do not actuallyneedmany.I have thoughtof a
storyline whereIwill notneedtouse a huge amountof props,I am essentiallyrelyingonthe beauty
of mylocationstoimprovise,suchasweatherconditionsandgrowthof natural shrubs.
The one propthat I will be usingwill be blood capsules,I
thoughtof this ideawhenIwaslisteningtothe songwithmy
eyesclosed.Myideaisfor the bloodcomingoutof the
protagonist’smouthwhenthe chorusandsynthskickin.I have
designedthe capsule soona certainwordit will starttotrickle
out of the mouth, and slowlybecome tobe uncontrollable.Iwill
buythe bloodfroma joke shop, anduse waterto cleanthe
protagonist,forsafetyissuesIwill use non-toxicfake blood.
If the costume doesnotgo to plan,I will have alternativestothe jacketandboots, replacingthem
withotherblackitemsof clothing. If the bloodisnotstockedinthe shopthenI shall create myown
paste to give tothe actor.
