1. James Blake is an electronica artist from London,
England. Blake is an award winning artist who
started making music in his bedroom. Blake has
graduated from University with a degree in popular
music.
Electronica music is a wide ranged genre. It
includes a wide range of contemporary
electronic music, used for many things. The
popularity of this music has created sub
genres. An example of this would be the
section of dubstep section of electro music.
Dubstep is a variation of a main stream song,
where someone has taken it and distorted
the tune, adding in synths. However, unlike
electronic music and its respective
derivatives, electronica as a genre is not necessarily made for dancing.
Electronica as a genre which has conventions of electro and electronic dance music has its
origins in the late 70s and early 80s, with a heavy influence with the rock and pop culture.
With boosts in technology the electronic genre only progressed further. During the early 21st
century dj’s became more common on Radio stations, which paved the way for further
developments, with artists such as Fatboy Slim and Calvin Harris. With the boost in radio
dj’s, grew artists who distorted popular sounds, such as Skrillex – who is one of the largest
dubstep artist to date winning 3 Grammy’s. Electronica as a separate genre has a wider
target audience fan base than dubstep for example.
2. Artists that follow the
electronic convention
range from many
different derivatives
of the genre.
Examples of this
would be electronic
artists such as
Deadmau5, and
Qlimax. There is also
dubstep artists such
as Skrillex who to
date has won 3
Grammy’s as well as
Rudebrat who
together are, representing the distorted side of electronic music. For electronica, artists
such as James Blake could be seen as the largest artist, starting out in 2019, and winning
‘best new artist award’ in the 56th Grammy event.
When looking at the target audience for an electronica, it is very similar most genres that
are mainstream, as the genre itself was derived from
mainstream the fans are very similar. The usual style is
what is in fashion at the time and can be adapted
whenever there is a change. As well as this people that
are listening to the genre will reflect whatever the artist
wears, as they will see them as a role model, this will
influence the way they dress. Stereotypically, James
Blake (the artist I have chosen to use) would wear a
tighter pair of trousers, along with a cheques shirt,
usually his clothes are darker which could be interpreted
to suggest that his music is about a darker topic, as most
people try to express themselves through their clothes.
