2. I initially planned to use some sort of creepy circus related music as non-diegetic
sound in my trailer. However, I have unable to find the type of
circus music that I was really looking for and hoping to find. Because of this
I have decided to use more classic horror non-diegetic sound in my trailer. I
have explored different options and have decided to pull different parts of
particular tracks to create my non-diegetic sound. To ensure I include some
sort of circus related music in my trailer, I have decided to include this in
the form of diegetic sound instead. This piece of diegetic sound will feature
when Jackson is lurking near his victims and will inform them that he is
coming. As I couldn’t find any circus specific music I decided to use a creepy
instrumental version of the well-known nursery rhyme ‘Pop goes this
weasel.’ this also links with the part of the narrative where Jackson uses a
Jack in the Box to inform one of his victims of his presence and as part of
his ‘game.’

I have two possible tracks for the diegetic and non-diegetic sound of a jack in box that will also
feature at the end of the trailer as the title of the film and will carry on through the sting at the
very end of the trailer.
I chose these tracks as although they are not specifically circus music, these pieces of music can
be linked to clowns through Jack in the Boxes. It also links to Jackson’s name and the way he toys
and plays with his victims
It will also allow my trailer to feature a form of contrapuntal sound as ‘Pop Goes the Weasel’ is a
well-known children's nursery rhyme. I have not yet decided between which one of these two
tracks would be most effective in my trailer. Each plays the same well-known tune but in different
ways. The first one plays the tune on a piano which creates a completely different version to the
second one which is directly from a Jack in the Box. The second one may be more effective as it is
more realistic and more likely to be seen as diegetic sound as it comes directly from a Jack in the
box. It could also be seen as scarier as it is a true form of contrapuntal sound. However, the first
track could be more effective in building up tension in the trailer. I am planning to get feedback on
this from representatives of my target audience before making a decision.
4. From my research into existing media texts, I have found that is an
extremely common convention of Slasher horror trailers to use the non-diegetic
sound of a heartbeat to build up the tension generated by the
trailer
I have found, as a horror fan myself, that the use of a non-diegetic
heartbeat is extremely effective in a trailer and a feature that I knew I
wanted in my trailer. However, I don’t think it will be very effective to only
feature a heartbeat throughout the trailer, so will combine it with another
track that will dominate the non-diegetic sound. I feel this particular track is
effective in building up suspense and tension and is the ideal heartbeat
track that I wished to use. It will be most effective if it is only used in
specific parts of the trailer, mainly in the middle and the final montage.

For the main non-diegetic sound I wanted to use a track that built up
suspense and tension but also reflected what was happening on the
screen. As I had an idea in my head of the kind of track that I wanted, it was
quite difficult finding an existing track that fitted exactly what I had in mind
I knew that I wanted to feature the non-diegetic sound of a heartbeat in my
trailer as some point, whether solely by itself or mixed in with a track. I
have found one track on youtube that features a heartbeat within the track
but also multiple stabs of tension building music. I have decided that this is
the perfect track for my horror trailer. However I will also feature the non-diegetic
heartbeat track that I chose previously on a specific part of the
trailer, just with this track kicking in again afterwards
6. For the first part of the trailer where we see the teenagers entering the
school, I am planning to use a more upbeat track as we see the teenagers
partying in the school. This is an idea I got from the Friday the 13th trailer
which features upbeat music when the teenagers first arrive at the lake and
continues on until something goes wrong
I thought that this contrast between the two pieces of non-diegetic sound
was so effective in showing how dramatic change in the narrative and the
change in the characters lives as they’ve been disrupted
