2. WHAT IS GAME SENSE?
• Game sense is also referred to Teaching Games for
Understanding (TGFU). The game sense approach emphasises on
teaching students key movement skills prior to playing the game.
It teaches students why they play the game, before knowing how.
For example, teachers may teach students the skills of dribbling
or passing before playing a game of basketball. (Georgakis,
Wilson & Evans, 2015).
• The games which are employed focalises on specific
Fundamental Movement Skills
3. THE TEACHING OF GAME SENSE
• Game sense approach is introduced through a modified form, this encourages physical, social and
mental development learners to understand the game in a more efficient manner.
• The modified approach of the game, enables students to understand the importance of the rules
and the skills required to play the game.
(Georgakis, Wilson & Evans, 2015).
• An important element through the teaching of game sense is through the use of questioning. This
encourages students to think about the game they are participating in and solve their problems by
thinking strategically. (Pill & Hewitt, 2017)
4. TACTICAL AWARNESS IN GAME SENSE
• The modified approach to game sense enables students to develop an understanding of any
tactical problems which may arise during the game.
• Students are exposed to tactical awareness whilst playing the modified games as they are
encouraged to make decisions to take advantage of their opponents. These kinds
• The decision making and tactical awareness influences the students to decide on indications
of what and how to do during the games.
(Pill & Hewitt, 2017)
5. RATIONALE & BENEFITS OF GAME SENSE
• Game sense is an important learning process which is implemented in PE
classes. Game sense outlines the essential skills of games which
encourages students motivation to participate in games. As tactical skills
are developed through this learning process, it enriches their decision
making skills. Game sense also allows students to work collaboratively
with each other as they are developing their skills together. Furthermore,
game sense conveys strategies that allows students at all levels to develop
their skills when participating in physical education.
• The teaching of game sense aligns with the NSW PDHPE syllabus, as it
is one of the six key learning areas. This links directly as game sense
encourages understanding and valuing of self others and develops their
self confidence through a variety of physical educational activities. (BOS,
NSW, 2018)
