Product Development Engineer
Requirements:
1. BS degree in an engineering field, usually chemical, mechanical or maybe industrial
materials.
2. Strong course concentrations to include as many as possible of: math, sciences, statistics,
design of experiments, business, CAD.
3. 1-3 years work experience in a technical capacity in a manufacturing business, preferably
new product development, process engineering, tech service, cost improvement and the like.
4. Some exposure to operation of lab physical test equipment such as Instron, etc.
5. Automotive, textiles, and/or plastics experience are pluses.
6. Possess knowledge and training (academic or on-the-job) in basic color match theory. Must
not be “color blind”.
7. Basic knowledge of ISO/QS-9000, FMEA, Cpk, SPC, control charting etc. is a plus.
8. Personal computer skills: proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft Project or other
project management software
9. Strong Project Management Skills. Possess a neat, accurate, organized approach to dealing
with numbers and data while maintaining files, records, reports and sample materials.
Excellent math, analytical and writing skills.
10. Excellent ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with all levels of the
organization and outside contacts.
11. Possess the ability to take direction and the initiative to work independently on a variety of
tasks while meeting established deadlines.
Typical Responsibilities:
1. Conduct multiple projects to develop new products & processes, improve costs, support sales
growth.
2. Coordinate the development color matching projects including directions to and from
internal, vendor and customer contacts. Maintain all files, records and the progress log.
Match carpets, yarns, and other components to industry master standards with Macbeth light
box system. Obtain written approvals for the file.
3. Operate all necessary test equipment for laboratory studies of floor mat properties. Ability to
train others in the proper use of the equipment.
4. Establish contacts and conduct test programs with outside laboratories and vendors. Arrange
proper paperwork including Purchase Requisition information.
5. Interpret and conduct standard test procedures such as ASTM, AATCC, FMVSS, GM, DIN,
etc. Assist with the design of approaches to special testing needs as required.
6. Perform accurate and timely calculations associated with test programs and procedures.
7. Organize and report data in a clear, accurate and concise manner. Use basic statistical
principles.
8. Maintain the Test Request file and log including the original requests, data developed,
reports made and sample materials retained.
9. Test, evaluate and benchmark competitive products.
