Term 3 2013
READ EVERY NIGHT! This can also include being read to and should be a book brought home from school or a
selected book/text by the child. Please record your child's reading in their notebook and sign. If you are having
trouble getting your child to read at home, please come and see us. We are only happy to suggest ways to engage
your child and books that may be of interest. It is all about finding the right book!
Each night your child needs to learn their spelling words. Please sign these in their notebook to acknowledge their
work. They need to return their notebook to school each day. Your child may take their notebooks home over the
weekend if you wish. From Monday to Thursday the children do a range of spelling exploration activities based
around their words. On a Friday they test their words and put in their new words for the next week.
This term we will be having a weekly focus for Oral Language. Your child may need to bring something in for this
as they will need to share on the topics below on their specific day. Below is an outline so that you can see what
we will be doing.
Week 1- Personal News: 90 seconds to share exciting news with the class.
Week 2- Every picture tells a story: Bring in a photograph/picture that tells as story. Share some information
about it.
Week 3- Topic talk: Find out some interesting information about our topic "Heroes". Share it with the class. Try
and pick something they may not know.
Week 4- Recite a poem: Choose a poem that you enjoy and learn it off by heart. Be ready to say it to the class.
Think where you could find a poem in this classroom. Remember to use expression when you say it to the class.
Week 5- Where in the world? Make your classmates guess where in the world you are by giving them clues about
things they might find there!
Week 6- Diving and finding directions/instructions: Make up and read a set of 10 instructions or directions and
get the class to follow them. You should only give up to 3 instructions or directions at a time. You could use the
playground, classroom, foam shapes or paper.
Week 7- Impromptu Speeches: Choose a topic from the box and create a speech on the spot about it for two
minutes.
Week 8- Talk it up on the telephone: You get a chance to show off your telephone skills. Your teacher will do a
role-play with you and ask you some THINKING questions. The class will give you feedback on your phone
etiquette.
Week 9- News Reporter: Your mission is to report on an item of news, local or international, from a newspaper,
radio or television. Tell us who, what, where, when and how?
Your child can continue to work on their basic facts by working on their basic facts booklet. Also talk about the
maths they do in class, this helps consolidate their learning.
You child's national standard reports outline their next steps and also give
suggestions of how to help them at home in Reading, Maths and Writing.
These also can be incorporated into home learning.
Please remember, home learning should not be a stress, it supports
the classroom learning and should take about 20 minutes per night.
If you have any questions regarding this, please come and see us.
We understand that every child is different and may need their
home learning adjusted.
