Atoms are the basic units of matter that form molecules by bonding together through covalent chemical bonds. An atom consists of a positively charged nucleus surrounded by negatively charged electrons, with the nucleus composed of positively charged protons and uncharged neutrons. All matter is made up of atoms, and humans are formed of billions of different atoms though there are only about 40 main types of elements found in the human body, mostly hydrogen and oxygen.
