The Nucleic Acids

Science Week.
The Nucleic Acids
The nucleic acids are
the building blocks of
living organisms.
The Nucleic Acids
There are two
main types of
nucleic acids:
●

DNA

●

RNA
(Can you
guess what
NA stands
for?)

DNA means deoxyribonucleic acid.
DNA means deoxyribonucleic acid.

RNA means ribonucleic Acid.
RNA means ribonucleic Acid.
The Nucleic Acids
They are called
nucleic acids because
scientists first found
them in the nucleus of
cells.
The Nucleic Acids
Now, we have better
equipment, and
scientists have
discovered nucleic
acids in mitochondria,
chloropasts, and cells
that have no nucleus,
such as bacteria and
viruses.
The Nucleic Acids
Nucleic acids form
long chains of pairs,
that make a shape
called a double helix.
Each pair is called a
rung.
The Nucleic Acids
DNA holds your
genetic information.
Everytyhing you are
is encoded in the
DNA found in your
cells.
The Nucleic Acids
Nuceic acids are
made of five parts
called nucleotides:
●

Uracil

●

Cytosine

●

Thymine

●

Adenine

●

Guanine.
