Both magazines follow several conventions for their front covers including using red and white mastheads, eye-catching main images, consistent font styles, and placing cover lines in the left third. The magazines also both use stickers and tag lines. The document discusses challenges in choosing a style of dress for the front cover image and using black and white interior photos. For the contents page, conventions like the masthead, location shots, and color schemes are followed. Layout challenges include splitting the contents listing and using a simpler design. The double page spread challenges conventions by using bolder colors to make the pages stand out more.
2. FRONT COVERS: conventions
that are the same/developed
Masthead
Masthead's are both red
and white as it is an eye
catching colour.
Cover Image
Both main cover image’s
have eye contact as that
is a convention of music
magazines it also is to
engage the reader.
Font styles
same font being
used for cover lines
as Q do on their
front cover. This
creates a pattern
and consistency
throughout.
colour
Both on a generic white/grey
Background to keep things simple
and not confuse the target audience.
3. FRONT COVERS: conventions that
are the same/developed continued.
Left side third
• Both of these magazine heavily uses the convention of putting all of the cover
lines in the left third and using the the main cover image to cover the other two
thirds.
Stickers
• Both use a standard sticker although mine has a flick which is slightly
unconventional
Tag lines
• Both use tag lines although instead of being in the logo like on Q it is still found
in the masthead but in mine its found in the sticker
4. Front cover: challenges
Style of dress
Very new style of indie dressing with the
flat cap and skinny jeans, in order to
appeal to a younger target audience.
5. Contents page: conventions
that are the same/developed
Masthead
Both use the biggest
font on the page and
clearly state what the
page is about also
using the same
colour as logo
Main and other images
Both images are
shot on location to
create contrast and
variety from the
front cover and both
contain a small
number of images
Colour scheme
An easily recognizable
colour scheme that is
linked to the brand
although I use three
colour whereas Q only
uses two

Feature columns
In my design, I decided that I would use
the idea of creating lines through my
contents page. Instead of making the left
third completely text dominant I decided
that I would split the contents the other
way (top and bottom). I also decided I
would’t use the generic list like box in
order to make the page look more
simple and easy to understand.
7. Contents page: Challenges
Contents Page layout
Having a small amount of stories as this is the
first of two contents page allows me to use a
different layout
Black and white pictures
It challenges it because conventions as it is
perhaps more creative and also shows a risk
as the picture has to be strong enough to
stand out and also still be recognizable as an
indie rock photo/artist. In this case they almost
makes the main image stronger and adds to
the effect that this contents page is quite
alternative
8. Double page spread:
Challenges
Colour
I used a much bolder and brighter use of
colour in order to make the pages stand
out. The red background also connects
to the person in the article. This is a
feature that doesn’t really occur that
much in indie magazine.
9. Double Page spread : conventions that
are the same/developed
Headline
Both have the
biggest font on the
page in order for
the audience to
know the subject
matter
Quotes
A standered
convention for a
indie magazine
although they are
normally
Both stand out implimented within
well on the page the story this way it
but mine uses a is more likely to
much wider make the readers
contrast in colour want to read the
making the page
article
stand out further Main images
