Unity in the Body of Christ
Acts 6:1-7
Missions Emphasis Month began this Sunday with Guest Speaker: Allison
Gill Sanford from InterVarsity at the University of Washington
Acts 6:1-7
In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the
Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews
because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of
food. 2 So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It
would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in
order to wait on tables. 3 Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from
among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will
turn this responsibility over to them 4 and will give our attention to
prayer and the ministry of the word.”
5 This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man
full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor,
Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. 6
They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their
hands on them.
7 So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem
increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the
faith.
This is a great example of how God wants us to care for each other
and respond to issues that cause disunity.
2. During the early days of the church, Hellenistic (Greek-speaking) Jews
were at odds with Hebraic (Aramaic-speaking) Jews over several
issues. The Hellenistic Jews felt their widows were not being treated
fairly in food distribution. The Twelve responded to the disunity by
allowing the group to appoint a committee from the Hellenistic believers
to head a committee. This resolution was a keen insight on their part in
how God wants us to care for each other, and as noted in verse 7, the
"word of God spread".
We are all part of the body of Christ, and we all need each other.
Allison used the recent protests from Ferguson, Missouri over the killing
of an African-American by a white police officer, and a personal example
of insensitive racial jokes by a UW student toward Hispanics as examples
of how to use the story from Acts to resolve issues. She worked hard to
understand why the insensitive remarks were made and how they were
received by the Hispanic student to bring unity, and a successful
conclusion through restoration of a student's faith.
Allison offered a three-part strategy to attack issues that cause
disunity.
1. Seek out information first. The more we can understand the root
cause of an issue, the better chance we have at finding a
resolution that honors both parties and glorifies God.
2. Let yourself be bothered by what is happening. The worst
reaction we can have is to have no reaction at all.
3. Take a learning posture toward resolving the issue. Try to learn
how all parties will react to a possible solution and you have a
better chance of finding the right solution.
Thanks to Allison for a wonderful message that we can all take to heart.

WOODINVILLE EVENINGS
A New Time to Worship Together at WCUMC
We will be meeting the second Sunday through the remainder of 2014.
October 12
November 9
December 14
We are the evening service of Woodinville Community Church. We
know that life is busy and weekends are often times filled up. Our
hope is to make a place where you and your family can grow in
Christ. The service is very simple.
6:30-6:50 is Worship
6:50-7:00 is Fellowship
7:00-7:30 is the Gospel
We strive to be a place of Christ-centered relevant teaching. We
realize that this can take many forms. Sometimes we will have one
speaker, other times we will have a panel of speakers to discuss a
topical issue, or we may have sharing from other members. We
recognize that it is beneficial to the body of Christ to hear and
understand the differing viewpoints within the church.
We have childcare for young children, but encourage 10+ year olds
to stay in the service.
Common text builds community.
We hope you will join us as we walk with Christ to serve the
community of Woodinville and its families.

During November, our church is encouraging everyone to participate in a
4-week study called Unstuck. The Unstuck Bible Study has been designed
to guide you out of the ruts and pitfalls that so often ensnare us all.
On Sunday morning, you will be inspired and equipped thorugh powerful
biblical teaching using a sermon series from "Rightnow" media. Then you
will meet with others during the week to read scripture and discuss
Sunday's topic.
If you would like to be in a small group for this series, please contact the
