1. 2nd Evaluation.
I am going to be comparing and contrasting the idents, e - stings and interactive menus I
have done research on. All together I researched seven. A big part of the research was
finding what set them apart from each other and how the differences in all seven applied to
their target audience etc and then obviously the more technical side of things.
First I looked at the Iron Man interactive menu. This is seen before you play the film on DVD.
This particular interactive menu has many things going on at once. Visually it looks quite 3
dimensional, menus appear on screen and then faces behind and in front of them but
transparent so we can see both at the same time. I think this is a really clever thing to do as
it’s more interesting and different. It’s not just one thing showing and then another coming
on screen after, it mixes things up. The colours used throughout this interactive menu are
quite dark colours such as black, white, grey and blue. These colours don’t really seem to
give off a feminine vibe to the audience and the colours are more generally used by men,
because of this I think it’s clear that the main target audience for the film Iron Man is men. I
think this because if it was for both male and female then it would use more neutral colours
instead of really dark ones. Also as there demographic group is men they would have to use
these types of colours as say if they were to use colours like pink and purples it could
possibly put the men off wanting to watch the film as they would automatically think it was
a film aimed at women.
Putting both the Iron Man and Toy Story 3 interactive menu’s against each other we can see
a huge different In terms of layout. The Iron Man interactive menu looks extremely adult
like in comparison to the Toy Story 3 menu. This is because they both have a different
target audience. Toy Story 3 – children and Iron Man – mainly adults. I think it’s really good
that put together we can see the difference straight away and be aware of the different
techniques used.
I like how both interactive menus have the used the same software and maybe in similar
ways but have come out with a drastically different turn out. For example, both the
interactive menus use computer generated imagery however Iron Man has used software
such as Light Wave to make the images on screen sharp and in a way, solid images to
represent the film – An action filled film whereas Toy Story is extremely childlike so in the
interactive menu we can actually see how they have interpreted the films theme into the
interactive menu, the movements are quite wide and life-like
The main focus on the Iron Man interactive menu for the viewers is the Iron Man that is
stood while everything is going on around him like the actors pictures. In the background we
hear quite dark and action filled music; this is also another factor that indicates the film is
more for boys/men.
2. When looking at Iron Man interactive menu and then the BBC Three ident I saw that they
were completely different. Straight away from the colours used in the BBC Three ident we
see that the advert, and as a whole, the channel is aimed specifically at women. The ident
uses colour such as pinks, purples and light blues. There is also a woman speaking saying
what programmes are being shown next. The voice is quite a chatty one and straight away
this makes you think it’s more of a women channel. The BBC Three logo is pink and blank,
another indication of the audience. The Iron Man interactive menu and the BBC Three ident
couldn’t be more different in terms of colours used and music used. For example, Iron Man
uses quite dark and action style music where BBC Three uses really light and good mood
music. Straight away as soon as the BBC Three advert comes on we can see that the
audience is mainly 20-40 year old women, I also know this as I have watched the
programmes that are aired on BBC Three and they’re specifically for women, for example,
reality shows etc.
As BBC Three’s main target audience is women, they have to make sure that they appeal to
them, if they were to use dark colours and a different tone of music then their audience
could be put off. The channel has to cater for their main demographic group. The voice over
on the channel is also a clear indication to the viewers at home that the channel is more
likely for women because the tone is of a womanly and chatty nature.
Comparing these both to the BBC Two ident from Christmas, things are completely
different. In the BBC Two ident we see cartoony 3D imagery that shows things built on the
BBC Two logo, such as houses. This gives off quite a family vibe and indicates the channel is
for all of the family, obviously before watershed. The cartoon like images being shown on
the ident creates a little village, very homely. It’s a model built world with animated
characters.
The BBC Two ident is two sided; it doesn’t use specific colours that could be deemed
girly/manly. You can’t tell when you watch the ident. This is because of the channels
programmes that are aired, it’s for both men and women debatably of an older age. From
research, programmes that are shown on BBC Two are things such as the BBC News, The
Weakest Link and various children programmes, so it really caters for all ages. I think the
main audience for this channel is one of an older generation, some with children. The type
of people who would watch this channel are maybe retired people and stay at home parents
as there is quite a lot of intellectual programmes on throughout the day. The children’s
programmes that air on the channel are aired at around 8 AM; this would attract an
audience as children who are getting ready to go to school would watch the programmes.
To create the BBC Two and BBC Three ident I think Light wave and maybe Illustrator may
have been used. I think Light wave would of been used as the I have done previous tasks on
Light wave myself and from seeing how easily you can rotate things. I would also use Adobe
after Effects if I was to re-create something like the Toy Story interactive DVD menu as I
could use specific tools such as distort, blur and sharpen and 3D channel. This would give my
3. interactive menu a professional feel. Technology has become extremely advanced
throughout the years and without software such as Light Wave, Adobe After Effects and
Adobe Illustrator. These are the main software’s that makes us able to create things like
interactive menus and idents.
