Climate change and forest
• Forests help stabilise the
climate. They regulate ecosystems,
protect biodiversity, play an
integral part in the carbon cycle
and can help drive sustainable
growth.
Forests and climate are intrinsically
linked: forest loss and degradation
is both a cause and an effect of our
changing climate.
•
The agriculture, forestry and land-use sectors
release quarter of all global greenhouse gas
(GHG) emissions and are the largest sources after
cars, trucks, trains, planes and ships combined.
• By reducing forest loss, we can reduce carbon
emissions and fight climate change. It's that
simple.
• As deforestation and forest degradation have
such a significant impact on climate change,
reducing forest loss can have multiple
benefits for ecosystems and people.
• These include
• cutting greenhouse gas emissions,
• sequestering carbon,
• providing other ecosystems services,
• Forests, like other ecosystems, are
affected by climate change, be it a sea-
level rise that threatens coastal forests or
changes in temperature and rainfall
patterns.
• In some places, impacts may be negative,
while in others they may be positive.
• However, forests also influence climate
and the climate change process.
• They absorb carbon in wood, leaves and
soil and release it into
the atmosphere when burned, for
example during forest fires or the clearing
of forest land.
Forest protection from injury
• Forest protection is a branch of forestry which is
concerned with the preservation or improvement
of a foest and prevention and control of damage to
forest by natural or man made causes. (example -
fire, animals, insect, fungi, injurious plants and
adverse climatic conditions.)
• This forest protection also has a legal status and
rather than protection from only people damaging
the forests is seen to be broader and include forest
pathology too. Thus due to this the different
emphases around the world paradoxically suggest
different things for forest protection.

Abiotic injury
• Three principal types of abiotic injury affect
forests and woodlands .
• injury related to weather, to soil, and to human
activity.
• Abiotic injuries, also called abiotic diseases, can
be found wherever forests exist.
• They are, for the most part, initiated by
nonliving factors in the environment, such as
temperature extremes, lightning, and wind.
Effects of abiotic injury
• Abiotic injury can provide an entry for biotic
pathogens and insects. For example, mechanical
damage during tree felling can lead to stem
decays such as those caused by Indian paint
fungus (Echinodontium tinctorium) and the red
ring-rot fungus (Phellinus pini).
• Abiotic injury can reduce the economic value of
individual trees, the productive potential of
forest stands, and the beauty of woodland
properties.
• Mechanical damage also can trigger an attack by
woodboring insects such as bark beetles.
Classification
• Grouped by cause, abiotic injuries
fall into three broad categories,
each with subdivisions:
• weather (temperature,
precipitation& wind),
• soil (minerals and moisture), and
• human activity (air pollutants,
herbicides, mechanical damage,
and wildfire).
weather
• Of all the causes of abiotic injuries affecting
forests, weather is the most unpredictable and
unmanageable.
• Weather extremes are certain to occur, and
certainly they are uncontrollable.
Temperature
• Temperature As a general rule, trees have
particular temperature requirements, though
there is some variation among tree species.
• Low temperatures All portions of a tree are
vulnerable to the effects of low temperatures,
even the roots (see “red belt” injury, ). Frost
can damage or kill foliage, buds, and twigs.
High temperatures The most high temperature
is fire.
Consequences range from scorched bark to
obliteration.
Solar heating is not in the same league as a
forest fire, but it can injure trees and in some
cases even kill them. Examples of high-
temperature effects include foliage (leaf or
needle)
Winter injury
• Two types of winter injury occur when
temperatures suddenly plunge after an unusually
warm period.
• These are called frost crack and top kill.
• Frost cracks are caused by abnormal shrinkage of
the sapwood. Normal shrinkage is primarily in
the direction of the annual growth rings
(tangential shrinkage).

and the top of the tree dies. Close
examination may be required to identify this
abiotic problem correctly.
Insects (e.g., bark beetles), biotic diseases
(e.g., dwarf mistletoe), and lightning also can
produce “dead-top” trees.

• Precipitation, in the form of rain or
snow, is in itself of little consequence
in causing abiotic disease.
• Water is used in dynamic but exces
water affect the plant vegetation.
• It infiltrates the soil mantle where it
combines with various chemical
elements.
• Nutrients, made available by water,
are taken up by tree root systems
and used for survival, growth, and
reproduction.

• Wind Structural damage from wind is usually
• Trees are broken and/or uprooted, also called
windthrown .
soil
• Soils are separated into various layers or
horizons, such as the litter layer, the humus
layer, the A and B horizons, and parent
material.
Minerals
The primary soil nutrients for tree survival and
growth are nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus,
calcium, magnesium, and sulfur.
In forest soils, naturally occurring mineral
(nutrient) deficiencies or excesses that
prevent tree growth or cause injury .
Moisture
• Soil moisture deficiency is the principal cause of
abiotic injury to conifer and hardwood trees.
• An exceptionally low level of precipitation or
below-normal snow pack in the mountains may
cause drought for whole forest stands.
• In addition, distinctive types of soil and varieties
of vegetation in the natural landscape influence
the availability of moisture for potential crop
trees.
Human activity
• Air polution
• Herbicides
• Mechanical damages
Air pollutants
• Air pollution has begun to cause concern for
human health.
• Although air quality has not yet become a
significant forest health problem in Oregon,
sophisticated monitoring methods using state-
of-the-art technologies (ground-based studies,
aerial surveys, satellite imagery) are assessing
Oregon forests for damage caused by airborne
chemical pollutants.
Herbicides
Chemical herbicides are used in farm, forest, park, and
residential settings.
Used wisely, herbicides cause little or no damage to
nontarget vegetation.
On the other hand, careless or inappropriate use can
result in significant, very costly damage
. Woodland managers who use chemical herbicides
need to be alert to the danger of injury to nontarget
forest vegetation.
Chemical herbicide container labels list the target
plants and give instructions for proper application and
safety.
Mechanical damage
• Mechanical damage Crawler tractors, rubber-tire
skidders, and four-wheel-drive vehicles can injure
trees. So can livestock.
• The common element in these kinds of damage is
human negligence.
• People can, either directly or indirectly, cause
mechanical damage that affects tree survival and
growth.
• The most obvious type of injury to standing trees
is structural damage.

  • 2. Climate change and forest • Forests help stabilise the climate. They regulate ecosystems, protect biodiversity, play an integral part in the carbon cycle and can help drive sustainable growth. Forests and climate are intrinsically linked: forest loss and degradation is both a cause and an effect of our changing climate.
  • 3. • The agriculture, forestry and land-use sectors release quarter of all global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and are the largest sources after cars, trucks, trains, planes and ships combined. • By reducing forest loss, we can reduce carbon emissions and fight climate change. It's that simple.
  • 4. • As deforestation and forest degradation have such a significant impact on climate change, reducing forest loss can have multiple benefits for ecosystems and people. • These include • cutting greenhouse gas emissions, • sequestering carbon, • providing other ecosystems services,
  • 5. • Forests, like other ecosystems, are affected by climate change, be it a sea- level rise that threatens coastal forests or changes in temperature and rainfall patterns. • In some places, impacts may be negative, while in others they may be positive. • However, forests also influence climate and the climate change process. • They absorb carbon in wood, leaves and soil and release it into the atmosphere when burned, for example during forest fires or the clearing of forest land.
  • 6. Forest protection from injury • Forest protection is a branch of forestry which is concerned with the preservation or improvement of a foest and prevention and control of damage to forest by natural or man made causes. (example - fire, animals, insect, fungi, injurious plants and adverse climatic conditions.) • This forest protection also has a legal status and rather than protection from only people damaging the forests is seen to be broader and include forest pathology too. Thus due to this the different emphases around the world paradoxically suggest different things for forest protection.

Abiotic injury • Three principal types of abiotic injury affect forests and woodlands . • injury related to weather, to soil, and to human activity. • Abiotic injuries, also called abiotic diseases, can be found wherever forests exist. • They are, for the most part, initiated by nonliving factors in the environment, such as temperature extremes, lightning, and wind.
  • 9. Effects of abiotic injury • Abiotic injury can provide an entry for biotic pathogens and insects. For example, mechanical damage during tree felling can lead to stem decays such as those caused by Indian paint fungus (Echinodontium tinctorium) and the red ring-rot fungus (Phellinus pini). • Abiotic injury can reduce the economic value of individual trees, the productive potential of forest stands, and the beauty of woodland properties. • Mechanical damage also can trigger an attack by woodboring insects such as bark beetles.
  • 10. Classification • Grouped by cause, abiotic injuries fall into three broad categories, each with subdivisions: • weather (temperature, precipitation& wind), • soil (minerals and moisture), and • human activity (air pollutants, herbicides, mechanical damage, and wildfire).
  • 11. weather • Of all the causes of abiotic injuries affecting forests, weather is the most unpredictable and unmanageable. • Weather extremes are certain to occur, and certainly they are uncontrollable.
  • 12. Temperature • Temperature As a general rule, trees have particular temperature requirements, though there is some variation among tree species. • Low temperatures All portions of a tree are vulnerable to the effects of low temperatures, even the roots (see “red belt” injury, ). Frost can damage or kill foliage, buds, and twigs.
  • 13. High temperatures The most high temperature is fire. Consequences range from scorched bark to obliteration. Solar heating is not in the same league as a forest fire, but it can injure trees and in some cases even kill them. Examples of high- temperature effects include foliage (leaf or needle)
  • 14. Winter injury • Two types of winter injury occur when temperatures suddenly plunge after an unusually warm period. • These are called frost crack and top kill. • Frost cracks are caused by abnormal shrinkage of the sapwood. Normal shrinkage is primarily in the direction of the annual growth rings (tangential shrinkage).
  • 15. Wint... in top kill, the phloem (inner bark) freezes, and the top of the tree dies. Close examination may be required to identify this abiotic problem correctly. Insects (e.g., bark beetles), biotic diseases (e.g., dwarf mistletoe), and lightning also can produce “dead-top” trees.
  • 16. precipitation • Precipitation, in the form of rain or snow, is in itself of little consequence in causing abiotic disease. • Water is used in dynamic but exces water affect the plant vegetation. • It infiltrates the soil mantle where it combines with various chemical elements. • Nutrients, made available by water, are taken up by tree root systems and used for survival, growth, and reproduction.

  • 18. soil • Soils are separated into various layers or horizons, such as the litter layer, the humus layer, the A and B horizons, and parent material.
  • 19. Minerals The primary soil nutrients for tree survival and growth are nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, and sulfur. In forest soils, naturally occurring mineral (nutrient) deficiencies or excesses that prevent tree growth or cause injury .
  • 20. Moisture • Soil moisture deficiency is the principal cause of abiotic injury to conifer and hardwood trees. • An exceptionally low level of precipitation or below-normal snow pack in the mountains may cause drought for whole forest stands. • In addition, distinctive types of soil and varieties of vegetation in the natural landscape influence the availability of moisture for potential crop trees.

Air pollutants • Air pollution has begun to cause concern for human health. • Although air quality has not yet become a significant forest health problem in Oregon, sophisticated monitoring methods using state- of-the-art technologies (ground-based studies, aerial surveys, satellite imagery) are assessing Oregon forests for damage caused by airborne chemical pollutants.
  • 23. Herbicides Chemical herbicides are used in farm, forest, park, and residential settings. Used wisely, herbicides cause little or no damage to nontarget vegetation. On the other hand, careless or inappropriate use can result in significant, very costly damage . Woodland managers who use chemical herbicides need to be alert to the danger of injury to nontarget forest vegetation. Chemical herbicide container labels list the target plants and give instructions for proper application and safety.
  • 24. Mechanical damage • Mechanical damage Crawler tractors, rubber-tire skidders, and four-wheel-drive vehicles can injure trees. So can livestock. • The common element in these kinds of damage is human negligence. • People can, either directly or indirectly, cause mechanical damage that affects tree survival and growth. • The most obvious type of injury to standing trees is structural damage.
