1. How to format all disks on a filer and reinstall Data ONTAP
Solution
WARNING: This procedure will remove all data from all disks on the filer.
NOTE: This procedure is not intended for N-Series Filer procedures involving the usage of the
command line, contact IBM Support for assistance.
1. Reboot the filer.
2. When the message "Press CTRL C for special menu" appears, press Ctrl-C to access the
Special Boot Menu
3. At the 1-5 special boot menu, choose either option 4 or option 4a. Option 4 will create a
RAID4 traditional volume. Selecting Option 4a will create a RAID-DP Aggregate with a root
FlexVol. The size of the root flexvol will be dependant upon platform type. You need to choose
option 4a.(This process will take around 2-hrs).
4. Once the filer has completed initializing all disks, reinstall the full operating system.
5. License CIFS or NFS. If the Data ONTAP version is going to be installed from CIFS, perform
a CIFS setup before accessing the C$ share of the filer's new root volume (vol0). This is
necessary to be able to extract the system files on the /etc directory (always verify the filer
platform).
6. Type download.
7. Reboot.
8. Type version to ensure that the filer has the new updated version on it.
