Castanyada y Todos los Santos
1. In Spain there is no
Halloween!
…but Día de Todos Los Santos
and Castanyada
2. El Día de Todos Los Santos
It is celebrated all over Spain.
It takes place November 1st.
It is the day when we most remember our beloved people who are already
dead.
The tradition says that everybody has to go to cementeries and take flowers to
the graves of their relatives and friends.
It is the day of the year when the greatest number of flowers (almost all
artificial) are sold in Spain, and also the day when the cementeries received
the most of their visitors.
3. In Cataluña, we celebrate “la
Castanyada”
• It is usually celebrated on November 1st
with a lunch (for adults and
kids) or with a dinner the previous night (for teenagers and
youngsters).
• We usually eat some typical desserts:
1) roasted chestnuts;
2) baked sweet potatoes;
4. • 3) and the well-known “panellets”!
4) usually served (to adults) with some
“moscatel” (a sweet wine usually drunk for
dessert)
5. -Usually in autumn in
Spain you will see “la
castañera”, a woman
that sells roasted
chestnuts in the street,
and that is dressed in a
very special way:
-a black dress;
-an apron;
-a scarf covering her hair.
She is dressed like old
ladies in Spain 50 years
ago.
6. If you want to know how to prepare the “panellets”, look at this video:

• “Panellets” are usually prepared at home,
although can also be bought at cake
shops (but you will pay them really very
expensive!)
• The main ingredients are sugar, raw
almond (before, potato was used instead)
y egg.
7. • So, you see, we do not put on a costume,
we do not use pumpkins to make candle
holders, and we neither ask our
neighbours candieslos vecinos…
• How do you celebrate it in your country?
