Taking a Look at Hip Hop Culture
Hip Hop Culture As I was growing up in the late 1970's, it has always been common knowledge that hip hop music and its culture originated in the
South Bronx section of New York City in the early 1970's. Since this time, hip hop has become a multi–cultural fusion of many different contributions
made by several ethnic groups like Caucasians, Asians, blacks, and Hispanics, to name just a few. Hip–hop has definitely exploded within many
cultures and subcultures throughout the world and within the past decade or so; it has been getting widespread exposure. When hip–hop music and the
whole culture of the movement first came onto the scene, it incorporated many different art forms. These art forms include deejaying [cuttin' and
scratchin'], emceeing or rapping, beatboxing, breakdancing, and graffiti art. In today's society, hip hop still incorporates these different art forms, but it
also includes the way you dress; the language or terminology you use; and the way you walk, act, and look. Hip–hop music on a whole has always
been a form of self–expression – depicting a person's lifestyle; their pain; their struggle; and the realities of street life. For some rappers or singers
today in the hip–hop game, it's still a form of self–expression. But for others, it's all about the money, clothes, jewelry, or the "Bling–bling. Ka–ching.
Ka–ching." (Liu, Pg. 1) Since the early to mid 90's, hip–hop has undergone so many changes that it has actually lost its culture. Hip–hop has become,

African American Music: Over the years, African American Music has developed as not only as cultural but also artistic phenomenon affecting the
world. The music takes its own stand of being dominant as well of having a prevailing means of expression through the use of the lyrics. The lyrics of
many songs tend to use a specific type of language in order to create that connection between the listeners. This certain style of language helps the
listeners to think on a deeper level about the real meaning behind the lyrics. African American music is divided into many subgroups that led to another
style, which allowed empowerment. Such styles as spiritual, blues, jazz, r&b, and hip hop created an incredible history.

hip–hop continues to grow it has continued to remain a strong influential social impact. Hip–hop created a way for many individuals to express
themselves on controversial issues seen throughout society. As a cultural perspective Hip Hop has had an overwhelming influence on the black

Hip Hop Influence On American Culture
What movement changed the world and created many traditions, movements, and even lifestyles? Hip–Hop. This is a name for four elements, created
in the late seventies, which includes turntablism, emceeing, graffiti, and break dancing. Hip Hop attained widespread popularity in the 1980s and
'90s. Today, many view this as just "Rap," but Hip Hop is not just music, it is a cultural movement that influenced America in positive ways. These
influences can be seen in the traditions, fashion, art, music, and lifestyles of America. It is important to recognize the voice of an otherwise
underrepresented group and how it influenced lifes. The culture of hip hop has a wide variety of influences that led to its creation. Hip Hop originated

This results from descendance of rappers from Griots. Griots were keepers of knowledge, including tribal history, and news of birth, death, and
war. Many griots spread knowledge through spoken words just like hip hop rappers (Blanchard). Rappers create songs that spread news of their
daily lives, dreams, and childhoods. They are viewed as the voice of the poor and urban African American youth who are misrepresented by the
media. Rap is more than just saying words on a hip hop beat, it allows rappers to speak for their community and voice concerns. Rap was well known
in African–American communities, but became prominent in 1979 with the song "Rapper's Delight" by Sugarhill Gang. Within weeks, rap began
topping the music charts which ultimately led to it gaining the name "new genre of pop music." The first group to bring rap to a mainstream audience,
MTV, was Run D.M.C. Run D.M.C was a trio of middle–class African Americans who came together in the early–1980s. They mixed rap with hard
rock, shaping a new style of hip hop known as "New School Hip Hop." New School Hip Hop was also pioneered by Def Jam which was a rising record
label for rappers and DJ's. Def Jam introduced many artist such as LL Cool J, the Beastie Boys, and Public Enemy. The Beastie Boys broadened
rap's audience, becoming one of rap's first all white male band, On the other hand, Public Enemy invested rap with radical black political ideology

Many have started to start rapping in order to succeed all those things. Teens today think that having wealth as to having nice things think that is what

music videos is more than ever present. Current Hip Hop artist, often have lucrative lifestyles (with fancy cars, money everywhere, and gold chains,
for example) going on in their song themes that is meant to reflect their success in the music industry. Children and teens from all ages see and hear
this with awe and imitation in mind, which usually leads them to confuse reality with fantasies (CSUN 2015). Being to materialistic can be
disappointing for teens when they see it is hard to have those things if you are not an artist. Teens are not happy with what they have and lose

From the website article I read, the main four elements of hip–hop in the 1970s and 80s was deejaying, emceeing, breaking, and graffiti art. Martial arts
were incorporated into dance styles, emcees manipulated the language into a nomenclature, deejaying was created by transforming popular songs, and
spray painting the walls was expression to the hip hoppers. The Hip–Hop culture was seen as an escape from the explosion of gang violence and street
violence throughout the 1970s and 80s, providing the black youths with a space for expression, this freedom of speech led to the spreading of
Hip–Hop to other black cities where black people suffered. Mid–1970s hip hop was considered as a reaction to social movements of the time. Between
the 70s and 80s there were subject to negative behavior towards black communities (Jamaican and Puerto Ricans as well as African–Americans), it was
argued that the ruling of president Ronald Reagan led to this behavior. Tricia Rose states, "it satisfies poor young black people's profound need to
have their territories acknowledged, recognized and celebrated." (Rose, 1994: p.11) (Neal, 1997:

Rap Music And Hip Hop
"Gangsta rap" has been around since the late 1980s, and has been categorized as a specific type of hip hop. Reflecting the violent lifestyles of many
black American youths living within the inner cities of the West and East coast, gangsta rap became a voice. The genre reflected on and spoke about
the harsh realities of what life for a black person during the 1980s. One of the most prominent rap names during this era that became the voice for many
people throughout the nation was the N.W.A(Niggaz Wit Attitude) rap group. Originally from the streets of Compton, California, these teenagers
decided to take on a risk, tackling the music industry head on, publishing their own works that spoke out against corruption. The creation of hip hop's
sub genre, "gangsta rap" during the late 1980s not only sparked widespread controversy, but also gave black communities a prominent identity within
their hip hop movement of the arts; it offered the nation an understanding of the "black struggle" through lyrics and went against established culture.
"Hip Hop is the only genre of music that allows us to talk about almost anything."(Flash. Foreword) Dating back to the late 1970s, hip hop originated
within predominantly African–American neighborhoods. The youth, who resided in communities throughout the South Bronx, sparked a movement
and developed a culture within this genre that has had a lasting effect for decades. What made this genre an aspect of everyday life for these New York

Persuasive Speech About Rap Music
My email was serious and sort of persuasive. The idea of it was to explain to to the manager of a music production company that focuses on rap,
what rap language is , and how it's affecting our youth and why it shouldn't be spread even more. And where some adults find it annoying and
irrelevant, I'll be explaining why it has its own subculture and language, and that teens take it so seriously, that it's affecting them and everyone
around them. For this I will be delivering this idea through an email to a manager of a music production that empowers rap and popularizes it. I
chose that because he will be one of the big reasons this kind of language and subculture is spread, and I'll be explaining why he should stop. For

This language is mostly 'slang'. Slang is a type of language consisting words or phrases that are sometimes rude and explicit, and are informal, that
are common in the rap language. The themes and language used in this genres, focuses more on violence, sex, drugs, and the hardship life. When
it first came out, it was somewhat acceptable because people in the early era of hip hop, faced problems and didn't have much resources to resort
to nowadays. But now as its being popularized for entertainment and nothing seriously, teens are more attracted to it, and are affected by it. More
violence acts are being done, the use of drugs is being more popularized, and that's the problem with it. The effect of it on the English language is
sparked by words created by youth and young adults who feel empowered to codify and label their own realities with new expressions, and as you,
music production companies, empowering these kind of people, you are adding more, adn popularizing it more among people, which is altering the
dictionaries, and adding more useless words. As proof to what I'm saying I've brought to you examples of what I

Straight Outta Sacred Film Analysis
Straight Outta Compton tells the mostly true story of the formation, rise, and eventual separation of the hip hop group N.W.A. in the late 1980s.
N.W.A. was an influential force in rap music and is today considered the forerunner of gangsta rap. In this movie, Eazy E, Dr. Dre, and Ice Cube
are the main characters while other featured characters are manager Jerry Heller, MC Ren, and DJ Yella. The movie gives a brief background on
each of the main three characters and shows how they joined forces to create a powerful rap group which gave voice to the racial tensions and
realities of life in south central Los Angeles during the 1980s and early 1990s.
Summary
As young black men who grew up and lived in south central Los Angeles, California in the mid– to late–1980s, the future members of N.W.A.
experienced firsthand the effects of the War on Drugs, heavy gang presence, and the growing racial tensions in their community. Law enforcement was
raiding houses as part of the drug wars, the government was passing policies that resulted in unequal sentencing for crack possession, and there were
high rates of gang violence. The members of N.W.A. wanted... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

and Twitter did not exist when N.W.A. was creating and performing music and many of the people that they reached had not or could not experience

Music is something we hear everyday whether it be from our phones,in our cars,or background music wherever we go. Over the years there have been
numerous types of music that have different beats, sounds, and different emotions. Such types of music is hip hop and rap, alternative music, and rock
and roll music. Music has a long time line and every single sound and type of music is intertwined within each other and influenced by each other. For
these reasons music not only defines a type of sound but also recreates lifestyles and defines entire generations. The power of music can be seen from
all different types of music.
One of the more popular forms of music that has been formed much more recently is rap/hip hop. There are many components of rap but in short it
is a style of music that consists of semi monotonic rhymes strung together over musical beats. Also extra loud bass and various drum beats are
commonly incorporated and in the early stages of hip hop raps were performed by djs which the sounds comprised from turntables and mic checks

Dj Kol Herc Hip Hop History
Like any style of music, hip hop has roots in other forms, and its evolution was shaped by many different artists, but there's a case to be made that it
came to life precisely on this day in 1973, at a birthday party in the recreation room of an apartment building in the west Bronx, New York City. The
location of that birthplace was 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, and the man who presided over that historic party was the birthday girl's brother, Clive
Campbell–better known to history as DJ Kool Herc, founding father of hip hop.
When hip hop music first developed in the late 1970s, not many people knew about it. It was created in the poorest districts of New York City by
African American and Latino teenagers as part of a hip hop scene that also produced breakdancing and graffiti art. Many of these young people were
unemployed, but some found work as DJs in discos where they learned deejaying techniques like how to use two turntables and a DJ mixer to play
records non–stop. Sometimes they'd also deejay at free block parties in their neighbourhoods where they'd play funk and disco tracks non–stop and ask a
friend to act as their MC. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

"turntabling"; rapping, also known as "MCing" or "rhyming"; graffiti painting; and breakdancing or "breaking". The movie Straight Outta Compton
very well captures the revolutionary hip–hop group from Compton, California named N.W.A (Niggaz Wit Attitudes). The group consisted of 5
members; Eazy–E, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, DJ Yella, and MC Ren. The movie is based on a true story and looks very true to life because the actors were
very carefully and precisely chosen to play their specific roles. Directed by F. Gary Gray, who is very well known for directing The Italian Job, the
movie Straight Outta Compton was a huge box–office success. With a budget of 28 Million Dollars, it has earned the worldwide Box Office of 201

he was a big fan of hip hop music. When I asked him what it was about hip hop music he liked, he simply said, hip hop helps me learn how to 'stand'.

the music carried over from Africa with the slaves, up until now, with the new styles created by urban youth today, African

certain elements within their music which makes it unique from any other musical form. Some of the musical forms which were created from, and/or

These instruments usually ended up in pawn shops at cheap rates ideal for poor blacks. What is most unique about jazz is it's combination of the
African characteristics of polyrhythm, polyphony, improvisation, and the vocal tone given to instruments, with the harmony and arrangement of white
marching band music. Other afrocentric qualities which can be heard in the music are: call and response, upbeat rhythm, repetition, falsetto, and
guttural sounds. Some of the instruments used to achieve this sound were the coronet, piccolo, alto horn, tuba, trombone, clarinet, piano, and later, the
saxophone, along with the bass, snare drum, and cymbal (Blesh, 160). An example of some of these characteristics is shown is the song, "Deed I Do",
sung by Lena Horne. In this song, you can hear remnants of white band music, as well as the polyphony of various instruments, demonstrating the
afrocentric qualities. "It Don't Mean A Thing" is a perfect example of all of the characteristics mentioned above. Polyrhythm is heard in the background,
along with polyphony, and the vocal tone attributed to wind instruments. Not to mention, improvisation is an intricate part of the song. As a matter of

encompassed a group of "socially and politically aware rappers, B–boys (break dancers), Graffiti artists, and other people involved in the Hip–Hop

Relationship Between Hip-Hop Rap Music And Subculture
Hip–hop Rap Music and Subculture
The topic I have chosen for this review is the association between a particular music genre and a subculture. In particular, the issue of focus is the
association of the hip–hop rap genre with the black youth subculture in America.
As a youth subculture, hip–hop emerged in the 1970s from New York City's borough of the Bronx. TheAfrican American community was the root of
the music genre, which gained popularity in the 1980s and 1990s. As part of its growth, the genre developed its own distinct language, music style, and
lifestyle values, which have influenced widespread recognition of its uniqueness [4]. As a term, hip–hop refers to both a style of music and a
subcultural movement. Music scholars ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Alongside these developments, the followers of hip–hop developed a unique form of dancing and particular forms of dressing, which they refined over
time. The "art" of writing graffiti also raised as an overlapping form of expression among hip–hop followers [4].
This assessment demonstrates the appropriateness of the definition of hip–hop as a subculture. A subculture is a cultural group within a broader culture
that has variant or different beliefs and values compared with those of the larger culture. The members of such a group differentiate themselves from
the parent culture based on adverse perceptions about some aspects of the parent culture [2]. The hip–hop subcultural group includes all followers of
hip–hop rap music, but the principal and most recognized members of this subculture are typically inner city youth who support the culture due to its
appeal and representation of their feelings, perceptions, and experiences in the society. For most youths in these neighborhoods who identify with the
subculture, hip–hop amounts to a proclamation of their independence and intolerance or rebellion towards most aspects of the "adult" society (normal
and mainstream society), which they consider as hypocritical and oppressive [2]. As a form of art and musical style, hip–hop has a lasting and
widespread influence. It has grown into a multi–billion dollar industry since the 1980s,

Textual Analysis Of Rap Music
In this report, I will present a discussion of rap music so as to review the origins of this style of music and the reasons for its growth in popularity.
Music is the art of arranging tones in articulate sequence in order to produce a continuous and unified composition of sounds and vocals with rhythm
and harmony. Rap music encompasses all music produced using samples, incorporating a dominant beat, and quick rhymes. Although rap music today
is a global phenomenon among the youth, I will focus this discussion on American rap music. This analysis will attempt to put rap music within
postmodern and socio–cultural contexts. As a style of music, rap is heavily influenced by hip hop– an African–American cultural movement

Most of the older generations criticize rap music for encouraging violence and depicting sexist images frequently featured in rap. Rap music has also
clearly depicted the long–standing class differences within African–American nation (Hemmer, 6).
Furthermore, rap music has also been considered as an expression of style as witnessed in particular fashions related to clothes and accessories. The
street wear adorned by many rappers demonstrates casual attire as opposed to white–collar suits worn by middle–class men. Also, the heavy jewelry
and fake designer–logos was meant to mock the middle–class (Serrano et al, 98). Fashion, like language, is a way of expressing identity and fitting to a
certain group.
As earlier introduced, the objective of this report is to explain the origins of rap music, its characteristic elements, and its development from a
predominant form of black culture expression to a mainstream global youth culture. Using relevant examples, I have explained the main genres of rap
music and their origins and musical influences. I have tried to place rap music in the African American setting, as well as to depict it as an expression
of a particular subgroup and the aspects of style that make it appeal to

Starting from humble roots, hip–hop has grown from the creative outlet of underrepresented black teenagers living in the South Bronx in the late
1970s to a highly successful commercialized business that in 2000 grossed over $1.8 billion in sales in the United States. (Kun, 581) Hip–hop is not
only successful in the United States, but also, its influence has permeated the entire planet, becoming a global creative and economic force. Historically
the genre has been considered representative of the voice of the black community, but some critics argue that the commercialization and globalization of
hip–hop music dilutes its message so that the genre no longer truly represents the voice of the black community.

Beats and Rhymes, Mos Def commented on the presentation of rappers, stating that in the current rap and hip–hop culture, rappers have to assert

It might seem odd that rappers would portray such stereotypical and possibly self–degrading image of themselves by continuing to write songs and

Rap Music And Hip Hop Music
From Max B to Tip Harris to Notorious B.I.G to even the late great Tupac Shakur, what is it about the rap culture that puts these artists image at a
advantage when they make music about breaking the law or even go as far to holding jail time themselves? The history of Rap/Hip Hop Music is
one that dates back to the late 70's where a group of neighborhood kids from the predominantly urban and economically depressed projects of the
South Bronx, who used rhyming over a beat as a sort of entertainment. Rap which is also known as hip–hop is a complex of culture comprising the
mixture of four elements: deejaying, rapping, graffiting, and b–boying.
What is it about the rap culture and the rap artists that allow for this?
The history of rap originated from inner city kids who rapped about their everyday struggle that the world may not have seen eye to eye with. Kids
from all over the country who've dealt with the struggles of drugs, violence, and everyday inner city problems. Being more than just the music rap
became more as a culture and ways to express themselves. At the rise of people brutality, the a gangster rap group from South Central Los Angeles by
the name of" N***** With Attitude" put out a protest song called "F*** Tha Police" to protest against police officers who were often harassing and
abusing African American young adults at the time.

Hip Hop Is Widely Known As A Genre Of Music That Started
Hip hop is widely known as a genre of music that started in a New York City borough called the Bronx in the late 1970s, but it is more than just the
music. Hip hop is a culture that consists of being a disc jockey which is also known as deejaying or turntabling, breakdancing, MCing or rhyming
"rapping", graffiti, and fashion. Each of these items are key elements in creating hip hop and these key items are part of the hip hop culture.
Deejaying was an important factor contributing to hip hop culture since it sort of gave birth to hip hop. For instance, breaking dancing became huge
for early hip hop since DJs played music that was perfect for breakdancers. DJs also looked for rappers or MCs to partner up with their music to give it

To become a DJ when hip hop was blossoming one would require to have two turntables, a DJ mixer and a wide collection of disco records. Not
only that, one would also require some kind of speaker system to play the music out loud. The concept of DJing is to take two different or the
same records and find their break down part and play that over and over to create a beat. The break down part is the part in the song where it is
mostly beat focused and the people can really start dancing to the music. This was discovered by a DJ known as DJ Kool Herc. According to an
article titled The History of DJing the author states, "Campbell noticed something peculiar: the dancers grew ecstatic during certain parts of the
records––the breaks" (Adaso). Clive Campbell better known as DJ Kool Herc saw that the dancers only came out to dance during those parts of the
song. So since DJ Kool Herc was already a DJ he decided to switch it up and play mostly the breaks. And people enjoyed that, so now at most of the
parties, people were dancing most of the time. Furthermore, most of the time the dancing at these parties wasn't just regular disco dancing they were
breakdancing. Which relates to what I mentioned before, it means dancing to the break part of the song. There are two other terms that also refer to
breakdancing which are B–boying and breaking. Most often people would break dance to

The History of Disk Jockey's
In 1935, American commentator Walter Winchell coined the term "disc jockey" (the combination of "disc", referring to the disc records, and
"jockey", which is an operator of a machine) as a description of radio announcer Martin Block, the first announcer to become a star. While his
audience was awaiting developments in the Lindbergh kidnapping, Block played records and created the illusion that he was broadcasting from a
ballroom, with the nation's top dance bands performing live. The show, which he called Make Believe Ballroom, was an instant hit. The term "disc
jockey" appeared in print in Variety in 1941.[5]

Turntablism, the art of using turntables not only to play music, but to manipulate sound and create original music, began to develop.
In 1974, Technics released the first SL–1200 turntable, which evolved into the SL–1200 MK2 in 1979, which as of the mid–2000s remains the
industry standard for deejaying. In 1974, German electronic music band Kraftwerk released the 22–minute song "Autobahn", which takes up the entire
first side of that LP. Years later, Kraftwerk would become a significant influence on hip hop artists such as Afrika Bambaataa and house music pioneer
Frankie Knuckles. During the mid 1970s, Hip hop music and culture began to emerge, originating among urban African Americans and Latinos in New
York City. The four main elements of hip hop culture were MCing (rapping), DJing, graffiti, and breakdancing.
In the mid–1970s, the soul–funk blend of dance pop known as Disco took off in the mainstream pop charts in the United States and Europe, causing
discotheques to experience a rebirth. Unlike many late 1960s, clubs, which featured live bands, discotheques used the DJs selection and mixing of
records as the entertainment. In 1975, Record pools began, enabling disc jockeys access to newer music from the industry in an efficient method.
In 1976, American DJ, editor, and producer Walter Gibbons remixed "Ten Percent" by Double Exposure, one of the earliest commercially released 12"

Negative Effects Of Rap And Hip Hop
" When words fail, music speaks"–Shakespeare– Music is something we hear every day. It can soothe us or it can make us very emotional. We hear
music in our cars, at home, on our phones, at school, even at the gym. Music is a part of our culture, it makes us who we are. Music can either
have a positive or negative impact on your life. One of the more popular forms of music that has been made much more recently is Rap/Hip Hop.
There are many components of rythmes strung together over musical beats. There are extra loud bass and various drum beats that are commonly
incorporated. In the early stages of hip hop, raps were performed by DJs. The beats, drums, and sounds were comprised from turntables and mic
checks have been incorporated into many rap songs. "The majority of early raps were live, performed at parties instead of concerts which is why,
Hip–hop is a form of popular music that is comprised mainly of emceeing and deejaying,"(Bambaata 2002). DJing has continued to play a large role
in interpreting the sounds of rap. As for the lyrical portion of hip hop; songs are extremely varied in content. Although the lyrics displayed in songs
have become more displayed as rap advanced, many early artists performed songs that were about both poverty and violence. Drug references have
often been made, even in the twenty–first century, adding to hip hop's explicit implications. Most lyrics reflect the humble beginnings of hip hop, but
lyrics have come to border a wide spectrum with

If this is the case why do we need to add more violence to the world let alone youth's education with the influence of Hip Hop? School hallways are

students aren't attentive as they should be. However, when accompanied with the dislike of school and the negative message hip hop sends, youth
can feel as if they could be the next "College Drop Out" like Kanye West; who is a famous Rap artist who came from nothing. How can they learn
anything if they not there or wasted/high? I never drunk or got high, but at the same time, I recall listen to Three Six Mafia (666 Mafia) when I
was around 14 years old and man was I affected. Nothing but hate and slanderous words spewed from my mouth. At one time, I was talking about
how I was going to kill someone. I just didn't care about life. It was if I was having an outer body experience telling myself to stop saying or doing
what I was doing but couldn't. With that said, researchers Assal Habibi and Antonio Damasio attested, "Nevertheless, the following facts are well
established: (1) music evokes a broad range of emotions and feelings from joy and peacefulness to sadness and fear; and (2) music–related affects are
accompanied by physiological and behavioral changes" (93). Looking back, I now realize this was due to me being bullied, I was hurting and wanted

Wild Style (1983) was a film that documented the real world of hip hop before most people even knew what hip hop was. This movie brings about the
four crucial elements of hip hop – emceeing, graffiti, break–dancing, and deejaying. These features are the backdrop to the story of a graffiti artist
named Raymond who lives in the South Bronx that goes by the name "Zoro", who is played by well–known New Yorkgraffiti artist Lee Quinones. The
movie goes through the tribulations of his life and relationship with Rose, while showing some of the historical aspects of hip hop.

It exhibits many famous DJs and groups from that time. Freestyle MCing is shown with rare footage of one of the godfathers of hip–hop, Grandmaster
Flash, pulling off an awesome scratch–mix set. During this time it was not uncommon for scenes such as the ones in the movie to occur in black
discos. Robert Ford, Jr. presents this idea in "Jive Talking N.Y. DJsRapping Away in Black Discos", by saying that "rapping DJs reminiscent of early
r&b radio jocks ... are making an impressive comeback here – not in radio but in black discos where a jivey rap commands as much attention as the
hottest new disk" (43).
This film also slightly expresses some of the racial segregation in hip hop that goes on during the time period between African Americans and Puerto
Ricans. Juan Flores shows this in "Puerto Rocks: Rap, Roots, and Amnesia" when he describes the struggles that Charlie Chase, a member of the Cold
Crush Brothers, goes through due to the fact that he is of Puerto Rican decent when the rest of the members are all African American (71–78). In the
movie, this can be seen when the members of the Cold Crush Brothers have a street battle with Fantastic Freaks. In this scene one can tell that there is
only one member who is Puerto Rican in both groups and they never speak a Spanish word in the battle or throughout the movie itself. Flores explains
this in "Puerto Rocks" when he says that:

Hip hop finds its ethnic origins in Jamaican music and DJs in the seventies who used two turntables to create longer drum breaks in records for dance
parties giving rise to "break dancing" and "break dancers" now known as b–boys and b–girls (A Closer Look At a New Hip Hop Movement). DJs and
MCs popularized the technique of speaking over beats and the culture expanded to include street dance and graffiti art. Embraced by working class
urban and young African–Americans, the music stems from African American forms of music including jazz, soul, gospel, and reggae.
Background
"Afrika Bambaataa basically is The One", says Jeff Chang, hip–hop historian and author of the book Can't Stop Won't Stop. Bambaataa's role was
carrying the gospel of hip hop. He came of age in the South Bronx during the 1970s and used his charisma to rise to the rank of warlord in a local
gang called Black Spades. After traveling to Africa, he decided to borrow a motto from an earlier decade: wage love, not war. He decided to use his
influence to turn the Black Spades into a peaceful organization called the Zulu Nation. "Bambaataa had this vision of hip–hop as a force for social
change," says Chang. "He had the history and street credibility to make this narrative acceptable to even the hardest of hard heads... He was the guy
who articulated that hip–hop could be a cultural movement." In 1977, Bambaataa started throwing

deejays and producers, and the connection between individuals and collective hip–hop identity and history. He argues that academics who write on this
topic tend to center more on economic, political, and social concerns instead of the individuals (Schloss 2004). His main points of this chapter are how
deejaying relates to sampling, how individuals shape the aesthetic quality of hip–hop, and female producers in a masculine profession. While Schloss

The argument that hip hop needed to be created is insufficient in explaining its existence, yet, the era's socioeconomic and political realities are still
worth noting. The deejaying technique may never have caught on, or been perfected in a world without block and street parties. In turn, such events
may never have existed without the gang rivalry in the Bronx, the graffiti culture, the cultural pervasiveness of disco, and other trends which were
hallmarks of the neighborhood in which hip–hop started. This relates directly back to the socioeconomic conditions of the neighborhood that the
individual contributors came from. Also, his argument that individual choices take precedence over social circumstances blurs when he speaks about
sampling and producing. The contradictions that are present in the chapter, take away from the soundness of the argument. He discusses the
socialization of producers, yet asserts that the practice is very solitary and solemn to support his, even contradicting one of his quotes. He also claims
that hip–hop, in being so solitary, is unlike other forms of African American music. Although he uses strong language to emphasize the arguments he
does make, he does not account for a few questions.
What would the aesthetics of hip–hop be without the need to compete with the gang life in the area? Why did people capitalize on and emulate the
sound of hip–hop to the point where it grew into a culture if it was so individualistic? How would sampling exist without deejaying and if it can, how
would it fit into the schism of hip–hop? How are there even female deejays and producers if the culture was so masculine? What motivated those

Since ancient times music has been a means of communication and expression. The beating of drums, clapping of hands, stomping of the feet, and the

Hip hop as a ding an sich is marked by some confusion. Consider the name; is it "hip hop," "hip–hop" or "hiphop"?

had the more interesting collection of breaks to play. Afrika Bambatta's breaks were drawn from many genres, including rock, rhythm & blues,

by other groups in addition to voices or ambient sounds) has led to lawsuits when the groups involved failed to credit their sources.5
Another early hip hop innovator was DJ Grandmaster Flash. He extended Kool Herc's break beat deejaying by pre–cueing records to match the songs.
This meant there was a much smoother transition between songs. matching songs. Indeed many of the recordings in the discography identify the

The Four Elements Of Hip-Hop
1.4.1. The Art of the Streets
Hip–Hop is a complex cultural movement formed during the early 1970s by African Americans in the slums of South Bronx, New York (Dyson 6), it
propagated outside of the African American community in late 1980s, and by the opening of the 21th century it became the most spread culture in the

Tagging, which can be a simple form of one color only; second, is the Threw–Up in which the artist may use more than two colors, and the Spray is the
third type where more colors and complexity is used. (Gross 285)

graffiti to create an identity in which he is certain about" (Fortuna 3), then it emerged all around America and the world. (David 72)

Rock music is more than always slower than Hip Hop. Its sounds and beats are more hard, meaning that they are more of a drum and guitar in the
music. Often times they will have a chorus that is repeated in the song more than 3 times, when Hip Hop is sung off the top of a Rap Artist's head
meaning what ever comes to mind. Rock music is one of a kind music that can be known for "head banging" music. Usually this means that a person
listening to this type of music will be shaking their head really hard up and down to the beat of song, usually shaking their hair. Rock music is also
classified as "punk rock" music and is a very fast beat song witch in my opinion sounds like racket.
On the other hand Hip Hop will usually be heard blaring out of a car with tremendous bass. This type of music is either a slow or medium pace beat.
Hip Hop has a repetitive beat and flows a lot smoother. Unlike rock the beat will change all through out the song making it different from Hip Hop.
Hip Hop music is generated from the so called "RAP" music wich is the same thing as Hip Hop. Rap has an automatic stereo type to it when it is just
said. Because when someone says rap music, they automatically think of the music to be about foul language and drugs. When its really a talent to be
able to rap.
Hip Hop is about life and growing up in the ghetto, as rock is more about love or hate. Rap artist's will rap about their house's, their expensive cars,

Donald J. Trump : President Of The United States Essay
Donald J. Trump will be the next president of the United States. Continuously throughout the election process, pundits and commoners alike
dismissed even the slightest possibility of a Trump victory for a host of reasons. The most glaring of which was that he had no political experience,
followed closely by the fact that he consistently spewed hateful rhetoric directed at nearly every demographic imaginable, save for white men.
Nevertheless, as the election drew closer, the number of his supporters grew and became increasingly loyal. Indeed, his faction was so loyal that he
even boasted, "I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn 't lose voters" (Diamond). It seemed as if no matter how
many sexist, racist, xenophobic, etcetera, remarks he made, that his supporters weren 't merely indifferent; they were rejoicing at his "honesty."
Furthermore, many of Trump 's Draconian policies, although hard to pin down, given that he was always wavering, were often at the expense of
women, Muslims, and other minorities (Timm). Meanwhile, those opposed to Trump, regardless of who they endorsed, were astounded as to how, in
such a diverse country, a man who disrespected so many people could garner so much support. From another perspective, many were bewildered that
there were so many Americans who somehow still believed that not every human deserves equal rights. Rather than articulate their viewpoints
eloquently, many Trump supporters standoffishly claimed

How Has Hip Hop Changed Popular Culture?
What artistic trend entered our society, changed the world and created many traditions, movements, and even lifestyles? Hip–hop. This cultural
phenomenon is the name for four elements of style created in the late seventies. The four elements are turntablism, emceeing, graffiti, and break
dancing. Hip–hop gained widespread popularity in the 1980s and 1990s. Today, many view this as just rap, but to fully embrace the variance between
the two is to understand the difference. "Rap" is the musical sound produced by the art form of chanting rhythmically over a track of music. Contrarily,
Hip–hop is not just music, it is a cultural movement that influenced America in positive ways. These positive influences are represented in the
traditions, fashion,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hip–hop has also progressed to the point where it governs the culture. Mike Langston, a DJ and hip–hop advocate from Wilmington, North Carolina
says, "Music is a drug, it touches your soul in various ways, it is as powerful as a drug" (Langston). Media and entertainment such as pop music, film,
and fashion are among the major forces transmitting culture to this generation of black Americans (Reese). This shows the significance of hip–hop,
and how it has the power to influence a wide generation. In conclusion, hip–hop has changed American Society in many ways, leading to ideas, styles,
and even revolutionary movements. Hip–hop has created a voice for misrepresented minorities in media, and politics. Many would view this culture as
just "rap" but to the contrary it has became a huge role in multiple lifestyles around the world. The elements of hip–hop can be seen in various
locations, making it easy to continuously expand and impact the world in positive

Obstacles In Hip Hop Culture
Ask the Republican politician Chris McDaniel, who represents the 42nd district in Mississippi what his thoughts are on hip–hop culture. He would say
that hip–hop is, "a culture that values rap and destruction of community values more than it does poetry; a culture that can't stand education. It's that
culture that can't get control of itself." Chris McDaniel along with countless others see hip–hop as a burden and something that promotes violence
(Murphy, Tim). If you ask someone who has grown up around hip hop or someone who createship hop music they would say that hip hop is art, music,
dance, dialogue among many other positive things. If you ask someone who was uneducated in hip hop culture they would describe hip hop as
ignorance, violence, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many people believe that hip hop and violence has a connection and to believe this is almost an extension of racism. People have free will and the
type of music you listen to does not shape the person that you are.( Merino, NoГ«l.) Hip Hop music is correlated with illegal activities and
violence and these misconceptions one might have may be because of the image hip hop music receives in the mainstream media. Hip Hop is
constantly receiving a bad reputation for the way it is portrayed negatively in social media as well as the news. But in all actuality hip hop is a
positive genre of music. Hip hop artists who talk about negative issues in their lyrics talk about things such as violence, sex and drugs. Artists who do
this have actually proven to sell better than artists who make positive music. Unfortunately, hip hop artists who do rap positively, or about political,
social or economic empowerment do not get the same attention and do not make as much money as a result. Most positive hip–hop artists do not
receive the attention they deserve. However, many artists or groups such as Mos Def, Lauryn Hill or Common are gaining mainstream attention. This
attention is encouraging since they are promoting positive values. Since many of the misconceptions that some correlate hip hop music and forms of
violence is due to the image hip hop is given in the media, these positive artists are very important. Forgive Them Father by

Taking A Look At Hip Hop Culture

  • 1. Taking a Look at Hip Hop Culture Hip Hop Culture As I was growing up in the late 1970's, it has always been common knowledge that hip hop music and its culture originated in the South Bronx section of New York City in the early 1970's. Since this time, hip hop has become a multi–cultural fusion of many different contributions made by several ethnic groups like Caucasians, Asians, blacks, and Hispanics, to name just a few. Hip–hop has definitely exploded within many cultures and subcultures throughout the world and within the past decade or so; it has been getting widespread exposure. When hip–hop music and the whole culture of the movement first came onto the scene, it incorporated many different art forms. These art forms include deejaying [cuttin' and scratchin'], emceeing or rapping, beatboxing, breakdancing, and graffiti art. In today's society, hip hop still incorporates these different art forms, but it also includes the way you dress; the language or terminology you use; and the way you walk, act, and look. Hip–hop music on a whole has always been a form of self–expression – depicting a person's lifestyle; their pain; their struggle; and the realities of street life. For some rappers or singers today in the hip–hop game, it's still a form of self–expression. But for others, it's all about the money, clothes, jewelry, or the "Bling–bling. Ka–ching. Ka–ching." (Liu, Pg. 1) Since the early to mid 90's, hip–hop has undergone so many changes that it has actually lost its culture. Hip–hop has become, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The music takes its own stand of being dominant as well of having a prevailing means of expression through the use of the lyrics. The lyrics of many songs tend to use a specific type of language in order to create that connection between the listeners. This certain style of language helps the listeners to think on a deeper level about the real meaning behind the lyrics. African American music is divided into many subgroups that led to another style, which allowed empowerment. Such styles as spiritual, blues, jazz, r&b, and hip hop created an incredible history. (Anderson & Jackson) As hip–hop continues to grow it has continued to remain a strong influential social impact. This is a name for four elements, created in the late seventies, which includes turntablism, emceeing, graffiti, and break dancing. Hip Hop attained widespread popularity in the 1980s and '90s. Today, many view this as just "Rap," but Hip Hop is not just music, it is a cultural movement that influenced America in positive ways. These influences can be seen in the traditions, fashion, art, music, and lifestyles of America. It is important to recognize the voice of an otherwise underrepresented group and how it influenced lifes. The culture of hip hop has a wide variety of influences that led to its creation. Griots were keepers of knowledge, including tribal history, and news of birth, death, and war. Many griots spread knowledge through spoken words just like hip hop rappers (Blanchard). Rappers create songs that spread news of their daily lives, dreams, and childhoods. They are viewed as the voice of the poor and urban African American youth who are misrepresented by the media. Rap is more than just saying words on a hip hop beat, it allows rappers to speak for their community and voice concerns. Rap was well known in African–American communities, but became prominent in 1979 with the song "Rapper's Delight" by Sugarhill Gang. Within weeks, rap began topping the music charts which ultimately led to it gaining the name "new genre of pop music." The first group to bring rap to a mainstream audience, MTV, was Run D.M.C. Run D.M.C was a trio of middle–class African Americans who came together in the early–1980s. They mixed rap with hard rock, shaping a new style of hip hop known as "New School Hip Hop." New School Hip Hop was also pioneered by Def Jam which was a rising record label for rappers and DJ's. Def Jam introduced many artist such as LL Cool J, the Beastie Boys, and Public Enemy. The genre reflected on and spoke about the harsh realities of what life for a black person during the 1980s. One of the most prominent rap names during this era that became the voice for many people throughout the nation was the N.W.A(Niggaz Wit Attitude) rap group. Originally from the streets of Compton, California, these teenagers decided to take on a risk, tackling the music industry head on, publishing their own works that spoke out against corruption. The creation of hip hop's sub genre, "gangsta rap" during the late 1980s not only sparked widespread controversy, but also gave black communities a prominent identity within their hip hop movement of the arts; it offered the nation an understanding of the "black struggle" through lyrics and went against established culture. "Hip Hop is the only genre of music that allows us to talk about almost anything."(Flash. Foreword) Dating back to the late 1970s, hip hop originated within predominantly African–American neighborhoods. The youth, who resided in communities throughout the South Bronx, sparked a movement and developed a culture within this genre that has had a lasting effect for decades. The idea of it was to explain to to the manager of a music production company that focuses on rap, what rap language is , and how it's affecting our youth and why it shouldn't be spread even more. And where some adults find it annoying and irrelevant, I'll be explaining why it has its own subculture and language, and that teens take it so seriously, that it's affecting them and everyone around them. For this I will be delivering this idea through an email to a manager of a music production that empowers rap and popularizes it. When it first came out, it was somewhat acceptable because people in the early era of hip hop, faced problems and didn't have much resources to resort to nowadays. But now as its being popularized for entertainment and nothing seriously, teens are more attracted to it, and are affected by it. More violence acts are being done, the use of drugs is being more popularized, and that's the problem with it. The effect of it on the English language is sparked by words created by youth and young adults who feel empowered to codify and label their own realities with new expressions, and as you, music production companies, empowering these kind of people, you are adding more, adn popularizing it more among people, which is altering the dictionaries, and adding more useless words. Dj Kol Herc Hip Hop History Like any style of music, hip hop has roots in other forms, and its evolution was shaped by many different artists, but there's a case to be made that it came to life precisely on this day in 1973, at a birthday party in the recreation room of an apartment building in the west Bronx, New York City. The location of that birthplace was 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, and the man who presided over that historic party was the birthday girl's brother, Clive Campbell–better known to history as DJ Kool Herc, founding father of hip hop. When hip hop music first developed in the late 1970s, not many people knew about it. It was created in the poorest districts of New York City by African American and Latino teenagers as part of a hip hop scene that also produced breakdancing and graffiti art. Many of these young people were unemployed, but some found work as DJs in discos where they learned deejaying techniques like how to use two turntables and a DJ mixer to play records non–stop. As a youth subculture, hip–hop emerged in the 1970s from New York City's borough of the Bronx. TheAfrican American community was the root of the music genre, which gained popularity in the 1980s and 1990s. This assessment demonstrates the appropriateness of the definition of hip–hop as a subculture. A subculture is a cultural group within a broader culture that has variant or different beliefs and values compared with those of the larger culture. The members of such a group differentiate themselves from the parent culture based on adverse perceptions about some aspects of the parent culture [2]. The hip–hop subcultural group includes all followers of hip–hop rap music, but the principal and most recognized members of this subculture are typically inner city youth who support the culture due to its appeal and representation of their feelings, perceptions, and experiences in the society. For most youths in these neighborhoods who identify with the subculture, hip–hop amounts to a proclamation of their independence and intolerance or rebellion towards most aspects of the "adult" society (normal and mainstream society), which they consider as hypocritical and oppressive [2]. This movie brings about the four crucial elements of hip hop – emceeing, graffiti, break–dancing, and deejaying. These features are the backdrop to the story of a graffiti artist named Raymond who lives in the South Bronx that goes by the name "Zoro", who is played by well–known New Yorkgraffiti artist Lee Quinones. The movie goes through the tribulations of his life and relationship with Rose, while showing some of the historical aspects of hip hop. Freestyle MCing is shown with rare footage of one of the godfathers of hip–hop, Grandmaster Flash, pulling off an awesome scratch–mix set. During this time it was not uncommon for scenes such as the ones in the movie to occur in black discos. Robert Ford, Jr. presents this idea in "Jive Talking N.Y. DJsRapping Away in Black Discos", by saying that "rapping DJs reminiscent of early r&b radio jocks ... are making an impressive comeback here – not in radio but in black discos where a jivey rap commands as much attention as the hottest new disk" (43). This film also slightly expresses some of the racial segregation in hip hop that goes on during the time period between African Americans and Puerto Ricans. Juan Flores shows this in "Puerto Rocks: Rap, Roots, and Amnesia" when he describes the struggles that Charlie Chase, a member of the Cold Crush Brothers, goes through due to the fact that he is of Puerto Rican decent when the rest of the members are all African American (71–78). In the movie, this can be seen when the members of the Cold Crush Brothers have a street battle with Fantastic Freaks. In this scene one can tell that there is only one member who is Puerto Rican in both groups and they never speak a Spanish word in the battle or throughout the movie itself. • 26. The Origination Of Hip Hop The Origination of Hip Hop Laresia Parks English III, Period 05 2 December 2015 Hip hop finds its ethnic origins in Jamaican music and DJs in the seventies who used two turntables to create longer drum breaks in records for dance parties giving rise to "break dancing" and "break dancers" now known as b–boys and b–girls (A Closer Look At a New Hip Hop Movement). DJs and MCs popularized the technique of speaking over beats and the culture expanded to include street dance and graffiti art. Embraced by working class urban and young African–Americans, the music stems from African American forms of music including jazz, soul, gospel, and reggae. Background "Afrika Bambaataa basically is The One", says Jeff Chang, hip–hop historian and author of the book Can't Stop Won't Stop. Bambaataa's role was carrying the gospel of hip hop. He came of age in the South Bronx during the 1970s and used his charisma to rise to the rank of warlord in a local gang called Black Spades. After traveling to Africa, he decided to borrow a motto from an earlier decade: wage love, not war. He decided to use his influence to turn the Black Spades into a peaceful organization called the Zulu Nation. "Bambaataa had this vision of hip–hop as a force for social change," says Chang. Joseph Schloss It's About Playing Records In his book, Making Beats, specifically the chapter titled "It's about Playing Records"; Joseph Schloss attempts to discuss the relationship between deejays and producers, and the connection between individuals and collective hip–hop identity and history. He argues that academics who write on this topic tend to center more on economic, political, and social concerns instead of the individuals (Schloss 2004). His main points of this chapter are how deejaying relates to sampling, how individuals shape the aesthetic quality of hip–hop, and female producers in a masculine profession. While Schloss makes a convincing argument against writing about hip hop as if it were a conglomeration of millions of black youth's tastes, he leaves a few things... The argument that hip hop needed to be created is insufficient in explaining its existence, yet, the era's socioeconomic and political realities are still worth noting. The deejaying technique may never have caught on, or been perfected in a world without block and street parties. In turn, such events may never have existed without the gang rivalry in the Bronx, the graffiti culture, the cultural pervasiveness of disco, and other trends which were hallmarks of the neighborhood in which hip–hop started. This relates directly back to the socioeconomic conditions of the neighborhood that the individual contributors came from. Also, his argument that individual choices take precedence over social circumstances blurs when he speaks about sampling and producing. The contradictions that are present in the chapter, take away from the soundness of the argument. He discusses the socialization of producers, yet asserts that the practice is very solitary and solemn to support his, even contradicting one of his quotes. He also claims that hip–hop, in being so solitary, is unlike other forms of African American music. Although he uses strong language to emphasize the arguments he does make, he does not account for a few questions. What would the aesthetics of hip–hop be without the need to compete with the gang life in the area? Why did people capitalize on and emulate the sound of hip–hop to the point where it grew into a culture if it was so individualistic?
