ANIMALS AND THEIR CHARACTERISTICS

1. WORLD OF ANIMALS

3. ELEPHANT Everything about an elephant is oversized. Its most conspicuous feature is the long flexible trunk.

5. LION Lions are the most powerful of all carnivores. They live mainly in Africa, but a small number survive in India.

7. TIGER There are eight types of tigers. They live in an area of ranging from India through Southeast Asia to Siberia & Indonesia.

9. BEAR There are nine subspecies of brown bear. The largest is the Kodiak bear found on islands in Alaska.

11. GIRAFFE With its massive neck & long legs, the giraffe is the world’s tallest animal. Despite its ungainly appearance it is graceful.

13. HORSE Naturally grazing animals, horses in the wild eat grasses & shrubs.There 1 st defence is to run away.

15. ZEBRA There are three species of zebra, each with a different pattern of strips. Herds of all species live wild in tropical Africa.

17. CAMEL Camels are the only animals that can carry heavy loads long distances in the extreme heat & with little water.

19. CHIMPANZEE Our closest relative,the chimpanzee,occupies the forest & savannahs of central Africa.

21. SNAKES Snakes are long, scaly, legless reptiles.There are about 3,000 species of snake, 600 of which are venomous.

24. CROCODILE Crocodiles are tropical reptiles found in fresh water habitats around the world.There are 14 species of the crocodile.

26. HIPPOPOTAMUS Hippo is a very large and aggressive animal.It is the second heaviest land animal after the elephant.

28. WHALES Of all marine mammals, the best adapted to life in the sea are the whales. Underneath their thick smooth skin is a layer of bludder,which insulates them against the cold.

30. DOLPHINS Dolphins are toothed whales. They eat fish, cuttlefish, and squid. Most dolphins are larger than porpoises, which have rounder bodies and foreheads.
