Gorillas are large, herbivorous primates that live in family groups. Male gorillas weigh between 300-500 pounds, while females weigh 150-200 pounds. Gorillas live in central Africa in thick rainforests or mountainous regions, and eat leaves, shoots, fruits and vines. There are only around 5,000 gorillas remaining with fewer than 300 cross river gorillas and 150,000-200,000 western lowland gorillas. Gorilla groups have 6-12 members led by the dominant silverback male.
