Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BCE by Buddhist missionaries from India and found fertile ground to grow and develop. It became firmly established and spread widely among the population. Over subsequent centuries, Sri Lanka became a center of Buddhist learning and practice as the religion syncretized with local beliefs and a distinctive Sinhalese form took hold on the island.
