3. The term “Aeneid” comes from its hero named
Aeneas, the son of goddess Venus.
Brief Summary:
Aeneas, a Trojan of Paris, is foretold to be the
founder of Romam Empire. And along his
journey toward Rome, he also is foretold to
destroy the city of Carthage which is the favorite
city of Juno.
The Aeneid
4. Juno, the Roman name for goddess Hera,
hate Aeneas for two reasons: 1. he is distined
to destroy her favorite city, the Carthage. 2.
Juno hate the Trojans of Paris out of grudge
because when Paris held a beauty contest,
Paris put a favor on Venus (Aphrodite) over
Juno and Minerva.
The Aeneid
5. Out of this hatred, Juno designed many obstacles
that gave Aeneas a real hard time to arrive in
Rome.
After Troy (Paris) is destroyed by Greeks in Trojan
War, Aeneas, along with other Trojan survivors,
sailed on the sea aboard ten ships to find a place of
refuge. Juno was not happy of the sight of Trojans
getting away from the hands of greeks, she asked
Aeolus, the king of wind, to blew strong wind in
order to stir a storm against them. As it happened, 3
ships of the Trojans crashed and 3 get stuck in the
sandbars at Carthage.
The Aeneid
6. Neptune, the god of the sea, having noticed
the commotions, rebuked the crazy
movements of the sea which proceeded
without his permission. Only then the storm
in the sea abated.
The Trojans are received warmly by the
people of Carthage which allow them ample
and comfortable time to repair their ships.
And Dido, the widowed queen of Carthage,
fallen in love with Aeneas.
7. For quite a while Aeneas seem to find a
home in Carthage with Queen Dido
which worried god Jupiter that Aeneas
might forget his destiny, which is Rome.
So, Jupiter send Mercury to tell Aeneas
of his need to get moving toward his
destiny. At this, Aeneas left Queen Dido
to proceed to Rome by which the latter
killed herself.
8. King Latinus of Rome also received an oracle
that his daughter Lavinia is to get married
with Aeneas. Aided by Juno, Turnus, the
rival of Aeneas over Lavinia, prevented the
entry of Aeneas in Rome. By this time,
Jupiter, the king of all gods, no longer
allowed Juno to make any intervention,
which allowed Aeneas to kill his rival
through the help of Venus.
