The document evaluates the effectiveness of combining a main product (a short romantic comedy film titled "Rendezvous") with ancillary texts (a film poster and radio trailer). It finds that researching film posters and radio trailers helped ensure the ancillary texts accurately captured and advertised the main product. The film poster and radio trailer were both effective because they coincided well with the short film through elements like matching iconography, quotes, sounds, and music. Overall, the combination of the main product with ancillary texts that were carefully designed to synergize with it created a successful promotional package.

OF YOUR MAIN PRODUCT AND THE
ANCILLARY TEXTS?

2. Synopsis
• The film opens up with Isaac looking at himself in the mirror, prepping himself for Valentine's Day imagining he is talking to his life-long crush Harriet. Whilst
Isaac is talking to himself, a student walks out from the toilets and notices him acting strange, Isaac then feels embarrassed and there is an awkward tension
in the bathroom. A voice over then plays of Isaac talking about himself and how embarrassing he is, he also hooks the audience in by discussing his plans for
this year's Valentine's Day. The title sequence then plays cutting to Luke collecting a post-it note off the wall for his work, which cuts (through match-on-
action) to the whole class doing work. Harriet is then introduced by asking Isaac for help on the question, this then cuts to Isaac dreaming about Harriet
confessing her love for him. Isaac is woken up from his dreaming when Harriet begins clicking at him to get his attention as she is losing with patience with
him, Isaac then embarrasses himself even more when he gives her the wrong answer. The lesson ends with Harriet placing a post-it note in a back pack, and
then leaves for home. Isaac and Luke then go to collect their bags, and enter conversation about Valentine's Day and Isaac's plans. When they leave Isaac
remembers that he needs the homework from Luke so he passes the work and on that work is a post-it note, Isaac puts the work in his bag and then the two
go home.
• The next scene then begins with Isaac asleep on his sofa, he wakes up and begins doing work, he picks out the work from his bag and notices the post-it
note on the sheet of paper. He immediately focuses on the post-it note and sees that it's from Harriet, he grows overly excited, forgets about his work and
begins dreaming about his date with Harriet. In his dream Harriet is super excited to see him, they confess their love for each other and then lean in to
kiss, Isaac wakes up just as him and Harriet are about to kiss in his dream, he then starts frantically looking for an outfit. He picks out a suit and starts
modelling in it, as he is doing this his sister walks in and notices what his brother is doing, and she tells him to not wear that suit. He ignores her and the
scene ends.
• The next day begins, Isaac is entering college and he sees another post-it note, he picks it up and excitedly walks towards class. In class, his teacher hands
him a piece of work which has another post-it note on it, the scene then fades to Valentine's Day evening and Isaac is entering the cinema. When he gets
there he excitedly goes and sits next to Harriet however she doesn't react the way he dreamt she would. As he recites his love for her she interrupts him and
tells him that the post-it note wasn't meant for him. A flashback then plays of how the mix up happened; the post-it note was stuck to the homework Luke
gave to Isaac. Isaac gets embarrassed and then runs out of the cinema with the sound of laughter echoing in his head.
• The day after Valentine's Day opens the final scene and Isaac is sat in class still heartbroken and embarrassed from last night's events, Luke then enters and
asks about the date, Isaac asks that they don't talk about it so instead Luke talks about how he's got a post-it note love letter, an identical one to the one
Isaac mistakenly got. Isaac feels embarrassed and hurt again except Luke surprises him by getting excited over the possibility that it could be from Harry
instead of Harriet.
3. Aims for the project
Our project aims were:
- As our film is a Romantic Comedy, a main aim of ours was that we wanted the short film to
be entertaining to coincide with our genre. Entertainment is a large convention of a romantic
comedy. Furthermore we wanted our short film to be comedic and to have a twist at the end.
- To complete the project aims, we incorporated a narrative that would be
entertaining and have a build up, for example we wrote on post it notes to
add extra excitement to the lead up of the date.
- At the end of the short film, Isaac's friend Luke receives a post it note from Harriet, the
person meant to receive the note. However, it becomes evident Luke is gay as he hopes it is
from Harry. This shows Isaac has lost out on his high school crush.
- We also created a film poster and radio trailer alongside our main product.
4. Poster Synergy
• In our short film we have a title sequence with each
individual letter in 'Rendezvous' on post it notes. On our film
poster we also have the same lay out as our title at the
centre top of the poster.
• We did this to link our main product and our ancillary
text through synergy and to help increase production.
• As well as our title, we have the faces of the main characters
within the short film on the film poster, however in cartoon.
• This was to further link the main product to the poster
and to draw the audience into the poster.
6. Reflection of intentions through the film
poster
• Our film poster shows clearly our intentions of
the humour and the genre completely from
the representation of colours and the added cartoon
affect.
• Including cartooned iconography such as post it notes,
edited on Adobe Photoshop, indicates there will
be romance, coinciding with our genre of romantic
comedy.
• We wanted the mood to be uplifting and
not dark unlike horrors. The film poster is bright just
like the lighting throughout most of the short film to fit
our intention.
7. Inspiration for our film poster
• Posters provide a logical and cost-effective way of communicating
to a particular target market. When placed correctly, attractive
posters can lure nearby people into a specific event and alert them
of an upcoming product or service.
• Looking at film posters from the genre of romantic
comedy, we were inspired by the main characters usually
being placed on the centre of the poster which may have
an underlying message to the audience.
• From the analysis of film posters done previously, any inspiration
we gained was effectively and accurately recreated onto our film
poster due to analysing posters during research.
11. Radio Trailer
• A radio trailer (also known as a preview or coming attraction) is an advertisement or a commercial
for a feature film that will be exhibited in the future at a cinema, the result of creative and technical
work.
• Whilst researching on radio trailer (my analysis is on blogger) we all discovered key aspects that
ensure you have the most accurate and successful radio trailer you can create for your short film...
The name of the short film.
Voice overs to provide vital information on the short film.
Relevant quotes from the short film.
Possibly sound effects from the short film.
The main music from the short film.
13. Reflection of intentions through
the radio trailer
• We wanted the name of our short film 'Rendezvous' to be evident within the radio trailer. Our
intention was met as I say Rendezvous with a lot of clarity to ensure the name stands out the
most throughout the whole of the radio trailer.
• Throughout the whole of the radio trailer, we included a voice over (mine) to provide vital
information about the short film such as a sneak peek of the narrative and where to find out
more information on the short film. We wanted to provide this vital information to lure
the listener/audience and advertise our short film to a greater extent.
• We included relevant quotes to entice the listener such as 'tonight is the night' already creating
a sense of apprehension as to what is going to happen on that 'night'. This was a big intention
of ours.
• Throughout the whole radio trailer we play Siine's music as it is the main music in our short
film. This was so we could coincide our ancillary text with our main product.
15. Combination of our main products and
the ancillary texts (OVERALL EFFECTIVENESS)
• To create successful ancillary texts from our main product we had to overview all our research in
detail and analyse film posters and radio trailers to ensure we had the best knowledge to create
them both accurately and effectively.
• When creating the film poster we had to ensure the synergy was accurate and the iconography,
lighting etc coincided with the entirety of our main product to advertise it accurately. From
doing research I believe the combination of the film poster and our short film was effective
as they coincided well with one another and advertised it accurately.
• When creating the radio trailer we had to ensure we had the name of the short film, voice
overs to provide vital information on the short film, relevant quotes from the short film, possibly
sound effects from the short film and the main music from the short film. With including all of
these aspects, I believe the overall effectiveness of the radio trailer and the main product
is huge. The radio trailer fits perfectly with the main product as a whole.
