2. WHAT IS 'GRAVITY'
Director Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity stars Sandra Bullock as Doctor Ryan
Stone, a scientist on a space shuttle mission headed by astronaut Matt
Kowalsky (George Clooney), a talkative, charismatic leader full of colourful
stories that he shares with his crewmates as well as mission control.
As the two are on a spacewalk, debris hits the area where they are working,
and soon the pair finds themselves detached from their ship and stranded
in space.
While figuring out what steps they can take to save themselves, Stone
grapples with a painful past that makes her consider giving up altogether.
Gravity screened at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.
3. ANALYSIS
Genre - Sci-Fi / Suspense.
The trailer is 30 seconds long.
The voice over outlines the name of the film 'Gravity'. This is evident to the audience that this is a Sci-Fi and draws people in
who like the genre or perhaps people who are interested in space. Furthermore, as the radio trailer is relatively tense with the
use of a stern voice over, accompanied with music, people who seek thrill and tension may also be interested in watching
the film.
The voice over provides vital information of the film such as the cinematic release date "10/4/13" which allows the audience
to know when the film is out and entice them to watch the film on that date or close to release of the film. Furthermore,
the voice over states the star roles like 'George Clooney'. This is star advertisement so people who are a fan of George
Clooney will want to watch the film. The same for Sandra Bullock.
The radio trailer is of a fast pace and has little sound effects. I believe this is to build suspense as you cannot tell what is
happening and it's going quick. It makes the audience want to see what the characters are seeing and what is going to
happen to them.
The trailer incorporates various relevant quotes such as "What do you see?". This technique is to persuade the audience to
watch the film and witness what she is seeing as it is inferred she loses herself from the space shuttle they are in. This also
infers space will be seen which will interest sci-fi and space fanatics.
