Special Forces Soldiers Used in Book, The Ugly American by...
Special Forces soldiers work in foreign lands with situations which are not always completely clear from its beginning. The Special Operation
Imperatives serve as the base for success by providing the framework to develop and assist the host nation in achieving their desired goals. Through
this essay I will use the novel "The Ugly American" (William J. Lederer & Eugene Burdick) to provide context to the benefits of applying such
imperatives and the consequences of improper application. I will bring to light the actions of the characters and depict the reasons why the application
of the imperative made the character succeed or fail in his desired goal.
The first character that I will discuss is Honorable Louis Sears, American Ambassador to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

A third failure in understanding the operational environment occurred when Sears coordinated the delivery of rice from Haidho to the stricken area in
Sarkhan. His lack of understanding of the Sarkhanese and communist tactics was reciprocated by his subordinates. The latter became evident when the
rice bags were labeled as if coming from the communists and no USIS employee realized what it meant. In addition, there was no effort from US
employees to talk or interact with locals at the destination. The confusion led the Sarkhanese to believe that the rice bags in fact were provided by the
communists.
A good description of Sears' failure in understanding the operational environment was provided by Ambassador Louis Krupitzyn on his report to
Moscow. Krupitzyn wrote how Sears kept his subordinates away from the Sarkhanese and didn't allow them to "go into the hills." This disconnect
between the American employees and the Sarkhanese provided Moscow with the ability to freely connect with the population and turn the table

The literary Trope of a Superfluous Man in Russian...
Russian literature was very much influenced by the literary trope known as the superfluous man. This trope was ideal for writers to describe the
shortcomings of Russian high–class society. There has been a witnessed general consistency when dealing with the superfluous man such as the
exhibition of cynicism and existential angst, while indulging in vices such as affairs, gambling and duelling. These individuals are typically from noble
birth yet refused to fit into society and disregard the societal norms. This trend can be witnessed through many examples such as Alexander Pushkin's
"Eugene Onegin" and "Diary of a Superfluous Man" by Ivan Turgenev. The characters described by these authors reflects the lifestyles of such a man,

Yet despite all his inherited wealth and connections he shrugs off social norms as he indulges in his sin and poetry, and because of such subversive

creature would be allied to him by fate; that, meanwhile, pinched and glum of feature, from day to day she could but wait; and he believed his friends
were ready to put on chains for him, and steady their hand to grapple slander's cup, in his defence, and smash it up" (II.VIII) Despite Pushkin's Don
Juan motifs, he settles down with a young noblewoman, Natalia, and like the typical superfluous man his love for this women leads to his misery. By

Eugene Delacroix Heroic Figures And The Status Viatoris...
McCann, Carmen L. 2006. "Eugene Delacroix's Heroic Figures and the Status Viatoris." Constructions Of Death, Mourning & Memory Conference,
October 27–29, 2006: Proceedings 29–32. McCann argues that Eugene Delacroix included status viatoris, representations of a state between life and
death, in his works and discusses their importance to depicting a heroic death. This chapter looks at Delacroix's works, including Liberty Leading the
People from, multiple approaches, including biography, social history, and semiotics. They begin by looking at Delacroix's biography and his
connection with the revolution he painted. McCann then goes into the social history by addressing not only those who participated in the revolution
and are thus depicted in the painting, but also looking at the motivation for starting revolution. He then goes on to look at the lack iconography usually
associated with death on the lying figures in the foreground and the implication that within specifically marking them as "dead," the bodies exist in a
place between life and death. This semiotic, post–structuralist approach is useful when engaging with this painting because it allows for multiple
interpretations and readings of heroic death in Delacroix's work. The intersection of all three approaches provide strong evidence for McCann's
argument. They prove to be a useful combination when approaching Delacriox's Liberty Leading the People.
Mora, Stephanie. "Delacroix's Art Theory and His Definition of Classicism." Journal of Aesthetic Education 34, no. 1 (2000): 57–75. This article looks
broadly at Delacroix's body of work and provides many approaches. The two most prominent approaches used would have to be social history and
biography, but given the time period and subject matter of many of Delacroix's work, it is not surprising that these two would be popular. Mora does
a good job at addressing the issue of self–perception by looking at how Delacroix like to depict himself not only in his paintings, but his writings as
well. Through this conversation, she challenges the use of psychoanalysis as an approach to Delacroix work and highlights how using his self
fashioning as evidence does not hold up for a strong analysis. When engaging with

The Theatre Of The Absurd Analysis
The Theatre of the Absurd is a collection of plays written after World War II that were considered of having ridiculous and random ideals. Many of
these plays came from Europe, including Rhinoceros by Ionesco. In Rhinoceros, the main character Berenger is a man who is not keeping up with
himself and is having a midlife crisis. Everyone else in the town is living a normal life when the townspeople start to turn into rhinoceroses. With his
differentness and being so out of place, he is the only one left as a human over a rhinoceros. Now that Berenger wants to be like everyone else and
turn into a rhinoceros, he cannot because of his major differences. In the play, Rhinoceros, different aspects of theTheatre of the Absurd come through
in the crazy storyline created by Ionesco. No communication and no logic are two of the aspects of the absurd writing concepts during this time period.
One of the absurd aspects of no communication is found through the lines of the play.
No communication is one of the absurdist aspects in the play Rhinoceros that reoccurs throughout the storyline. Towards the beginning of the play, the
characters find that a rhinoceros is trampling through the town. The housewife finds that her cat has been trampled on by the strange creature, and is
very upset. She wails to the others: "It ran over my cat, it ran over my cat!" (Ionesco 26). Everyone responds back to her: "Poor little thing!" (Ionesco
26). Even though the cat has been trampled over and is dead,

How Did The French Revolution Influence Art
The French Revolution and the Art it Influenced
"Liberty, equality, fraternity, or death;– the last, much the easiest to bestow, O Guillotine!" wrote the famous author Charles Dickens, in his classic
book, The Tale of Two Cities. The French Revolution (1789–1796) was a fight for liberty and equality, which ultimately led to the execution of Queen
Marie Antoinette and King Louis XVI, by way of guillotine. And, eventually Napoleon Bonaparte became the ruler of France. This was a transforming
time in not just France's history, but European history and World history. The people of France were fed up with the monarchy and the burden of high
taxes, as the monarch rulers squandered money away while the people faced famine and poverty. The Revolution was so powerful that artists not only
painted about it, but they became revolutionaries themselves, like Jacques–Louis David, who is famous for his works, Oath of the Horratii, and
Napoleon Crossing the Alps. In 1830, the second French Revolution broke out and this was known as the "Three Glorious Days", in which the
people of France protested Charles X after he imposed ordinances that prevented freedom of the press and increased the power of his monarchy
("French Revolution", n.d.). The famous allegorical painting by Eugene Delacroix, Liberty Leading the People, is a historical depiction of the second
French Revolution and illustrates the connection between socioeconomic and political issues, and art. This paper will look at David's Napoleon
Crossing the Alps, and Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People and analyze the impact of the French Revolution on art of those periods.
Jacques Louis David (1748–1825) was one of the most famous Neoclassist painters, as well as a devout revolutionary in 19th century France. He
painted works that some consider propaganda of the time, yet he did so in pure Neoclassical fashion (Pollitt, n.d.). Eventually, he became the personal
painter for Napoleon Bonaparte, as he continued to support the revolution through art. In Napoleon Crossing the Alps, we see a diagonal, yet static
composition. The diagonal that is created by the horse is reminiscent of Baroque figures, yet it lacks the movement that the Baroque style portrayed so
well.

Lensky 's Aria From The Opera ' Eugene Onegin
Lensky's Aria from the opera "Eugene Onegin"
A novel by Alexander Pushkin adapted for opera by Pytor Tchaikowsky in 1825
Arranged for flute and piano by Guy Braunstein; edited and revised by Emmanuel Pahud in 2009
Performed by Emmanuel Pahud and Fuminori Tanada
As does any opera, Tchaikowky's Russian Opera Eugene Onegin portrays a storyline overrun with tragedy. Eugene Onegin has inherited his uncle's
estate giving him access to acres of hunting ground on which he meets Lensky, whom he becomes rather good friends with. The friendship does
not last long however, as a vast misunderstanding comes between them. Lensky had recently been engaged to Olga, a neighbor of Onegin's, and
finds himself incredibly joyful and very much in love. Lensky sees Onegin dancing with his fiancГ©', and takes Onegin to be attempting to
seduce his fiancГ©, yet this is not the case. Onegin was only dancing with Olga to be cruel to her younger sister Tatyana who has recently
expressed her love for Onegin. Lensky will not here of Onegin's explanation and challenges Onegin to a duel. It is in the scene of the duel where
Lensky performs his aria. The aria is the last lyrical piece in the opera at the end of Act 2. The aria is heard by the audience just before the battle and
just before Onegin loses his life.
Lensky's Aria has been performed by many vocalists both on stage and as a solo work accompanied only by the piano. The lyrics tell of how Lensky
wishes he were young again and had only

The Romantic Hero in Pechorin, Onegin, and the Demon Essay...
The Romantic Hero in Pechorin, Onegin, and the Demon
Through examining the works of Lermontov, A Hero of Our Time, and "The Demon," as well as Pushkin's Eugene Onegin, we can see the similarities
between Pechorin, the Demon, and Onegin and how each character embodies the qualities of the romantic hero. A romantic hero is a very contradicting
character. For example, in the History of Russian Literature by Charles A. Moser, he describes the romantic hero as having "the anguish of emptiness;
the trembling anxieties of a shallow self–love – as well as genuine power and courage; noble aspirations along with ignorance and poor upbringing"
(137). All of the traits stated above are very conflicting. Pechorin, Onegin and the Demon, being the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pechorin, being the tactless character he is, treats women as an incentive for endless conquests and does not consider them worthy of any particular
respect. He considers women, such as Princess Mary, to be little more than a romantic game and they have no meaning to him. This is shown in his
comment on Princess Mary: "I often wonder why I'm trying so hard to win the love of a girl I have no desire to seduce and whom I'd never marry"
(Lermontov, 126). This quote is a perfect example of how Pechorin can be extremely self–serving and disregard the feelings of others. It also
exemplifies his inability to return to the strong feelings of love.
Toward the end of the novel we explore Pechorin's final adventures that lead to his downfall and isolation from society, resulting in his death. It is in
his final adventures that we see Pechorin take a turn for the worse as he says, "And perhaps tomorrow I'll die...so why bother to live" (Lermontov
157). In this passage it becomes clear as day that Pechorin has fallen into a deep depression. The constant change in personality and character is the
exact reason that explains how Pechorin is a perfect example of the literary romantic hero.
Pechorin describes his own personality as self–destructive, and he came to the realization that he doesn't understand his purpose as he constantly
questions why he is involved in many situations throughout the novel. His boredom with life, and feeling of emptiness, gives him

Russian Duels In A Hero Of Our Time And Eugene Onegin
Narrative Russian writers seem to enjoy inserting a duel in their literature. There's Pierre's duel with Dolohov in Tolstoy's War and Peace; there's
Onegin's duel with Lensky in Pushkin's Eugene Onegin; there's Pechorin's duel with Grushnitsky in Lermontov's A Hero of Our Time, and Bazarov
duel with Pavel in Turgenev's Fathers and Sons. In this paper, however, making comparisons between the duels from A Hero of Our Time and Eugene
Onegin will be the primary focus. When it comes to deciding if dueling was a noble form of conflict resolution, both writers seem to indirectly portray
to the reader that duels are unimpressive and ineffective. Both writers emphasize on the challenges that could happen before, during, and after a Russian
duel. If the writers wanted to portray to the readers that duels were honorable, then they would have not displayed the challenges that each character
faced while they participated in the duel. A similarity between the two duels of A Hero of Our Time and Eugene Onegin is who ultimately ends up
being killed. Both Lermontov and Onegin kill a character that was foolish, and who, perhaps, should not have died. In A Hero of Our Time,
Grushnitsky foolishly challenges Pechorin after mistakenly assuming that Pechorin snuck into Princess Mary's residence to see her when she was
home alone. However, Pechorin had actually snuck into the residence to see Vera, but Grushnitsky, blinded by jealousy, does not realize the truth.
During the duel, Pechorin gains

Gavroche
Since these French Romantic paintings have been discussed for centuries, they also have deep influences on French people and society. In France
society, the various classes can be recognized by the clothes they are wearing. In EugГЁne Delacroix's "Liberty Leading the People", the young boy,
the representative Parisian street urchin, positioned on the right hand side of the painting epitomizes political awareness, for he takes his destiny in
hands. (Curatorialintern, 2010) The street urchin's figure seems to illustrate the character named "Gavroche" in Les MisГ©rables, which is written by
Victor Hugo. Therefore, it is widely believed that this character–"Gavroche", is inspired by EugГЁne Delacroix's "Liberty Leading the People". In

(Curatorialintern, 2010) Moreover, the yellow dress which the woman wears brings to mind a classical drapery. This dress is together with a belt at
her waist and it has dropped to below her breasts, which shows her underarm hair. All of these were marked as vulgar by classical artists and they
probably impacted on the French artists and society deeply.
In addition, the significance of contemporary art can be demonstrated since Louis–Philip understood Delacroix's indication and decided to celebrate his
glorious succession to the throne by purchasing the painting.
On the other hand, the great influence of "Liberty Leading the People" also can be seen in modern society. In 2008, Coldplay decided to use
"Liberty Leading the People" as their album cover, which named "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends". The title of the album was taken
from Frida Kahlo's painting, namely "Viva La Vida". This Spanish phrase translates to "Long live life" and had made an impression on Chris Martin,
who is the singer of Coldplay. Kahlo wrote it onto her painting and would like to celebrate life even though life had not been kind to her and she was
going through considerable pain. Therefore, Coldplay used this concept and applied it to its album cover with Delacroix's "Liberty Leading the

Ugly, Ugly Americans
At the heart of nearly every world conflict, the United States of America is either at the epicenter, or in some way, majorly involved; this has caused
disdain among many nations of the world–and their disdain for the United States and her means has been demonstrated in various attacks, kidnappings,
and other acts of terror. And while there are plenty of Americans going off into the world making effective, meaningful change that doesn't spur the
resentment of other nations, it is easily seen that there are many Americans–a majority–that continue to give other nations the impression that
Americans are pompous, ugly people. The criteria of Americans being judged as either Good Americans or Ugly Americans is derived from William
J. Lederer and Eugene Burdick's genius novel, The Ugly American, which gives in–depth descriptions of good and ugly Americans through talented
storytelling–stories based on actual people and events. The authors foster a sharp contrast between what an Ugly American is and what a Good
American is; they begin their novel with an example of an Ugly American–ambassador to Sarkhan: Louis Sears. He is an American who believes
everything is done better the "American way." He refuses to learn the language of the people he is an ambassador to because he regards it as
unimportant–he believes that anyone who is important or worth talking to will know English. Ambassador Sears wasn't

What Is The Theme Of Romanticism In The Voyage By Charles...
Life and Death are the two immovable forces that all humanity must face. Mankind has constantly sought to fight or cope with these two realities.
Charles Baudelaire chose to confront this inevitability by doing what he does best, he wrote a poem about it. This poem in particular is a journey to
understanding these two realities. In his work, The Voyage,Charles Baudelaire describes the longing of the soul to understand the unknown, but upon
searching the discovery that humankind around the globe remains the same. Charles Baudelaire's poetry is a great example of when two seemingly
opposing styles of writing, romanticism and realism, meet. The two intertwine in this work to form a masterpiece of natural beauty and painful
realism. His use of nature to drive many of his deeper contemplations gives this work an air of romanticism. He contrast this beauty by discussing
topics that a writer of strict romanticism would typically stray away from, such as the strongly negative reality of human behavior. However, the
combination of these two styles that appear to stand in opposition of one another is part of the unique and haunting beauty that Baudelaire offers in
his poetry. Charles Baudelaire chooses to begin his work with a child's curiosity with maps and the vastness of the world. In the eyes of a ... Show more

Eugene O Neill Research Paper
O'Neill was born into the theatre. His father, James O'Neill, was a successful touring actor in the last quarter of the 19th century whose most famous
role was that of the Count of Monte Cristo in a stage adaptation of the Alexandre Dumas pГЁre novel. His mother, Ella, accompanied her husband
back and forth across the country, settling down only briefly for the birth of her first son, James, Jr., and of Eugene.
Eugene, who was born in a hotel, spent his early childhood in hotel rooms, on trains, and backstage. Although he later deplored the nightmare insecurity
of his early years and blamed his father for the difficult, rough–and–tumble life the family led––a life that resulted in his mother's drug
addiction––Eugene had the theatre in his blood. He was also, as a child, steeped in the peasant Irish Catholicism of his father and the more genteel,
mystical piety of his mother, two influences, often in dramatic conflict, which account for the high sense of drama and the ... Show more content on

Essay On Francisco Goya
Francisco Goya is one of the most remarkable artists of the eighteenth century. Born in the village of Fuendetodos in Spain, Goya grew up to become
an inspirational painter after pursuing his studies in art. Goya began working for the Spanish royal court and created several works that were a
criticism to the political and social problems of the contemporary era. He won several commissions from the royal court after establishing his esteem as
a portrait artist. During the period of enlightenment, the artistic works of Goya were prominent throughout Spain. Goya introduced royal workshops,
which spanned over four monarchies. He painted several cartoons and haunting scenes for the royal palaces. Goya's tapestries glorify the leisure
activities of the young, rich and poor. His etchings are a resemblance of the royal elite class. Most of Goya's paintings capture the sensitivity of artistic
techniques through brushstrokes. Some of Goya's artistic works introduce to the audience, a world of ghosts, witches and other creatures, which invade

Analysis Of Ship Wreak Scene : The Raft Of The Medusa
In 1816, the French government sent a convoy of ships to set up a colony in Senegal. Hugues Duroy de Chaumareys, who was lacking in both
authority and experience, was appointed by the king to be the Captain of the ship (Brandt 132). When the ship ran aground, officers and officials
filled up the life boats, leaving about 150 men to float on a quickly made raft with nothing but a small amount of wine for sustenance, forcing them
to cannibalism. The raft was found 13 days later, with only 15 men left living. When Theodore Gericault found out about this, he set out to seek
justice for the tragedy that was the Medusa (Gericault video kanopy). Alothough it was initially titled "Ship Wreak Scene", the Raft of the Medusa
was immediately recongnized by the pubic as an image of the horrific event that it was (Gericault video kanopy). Not only were critics appalled at
the romantic art style defined by the "spiraling energy and brushstrokes", but the general public recognized the "scathing commentary on the
ineptitude of the restoration government" (Mary's video). Paintings of this size were normally reserved for heroic subjects. However, this painting
was the direct opposite of that. It is directly addressing the monarch's "indifference to the suffering of others", and this message was not lost on its
viewers (Brandt 133). The art style of the Raft of the Medusa was "progressive and modern" because of the life and energy that portrayed in it. The

Symbolism In Eugene Onegin
Symbolism can be seen in everyday life. For example, the image of a caduceus will normally invoke the thoughts of medicine or a doctor's office. But
a caduceus does not mean medicine. In fact, it is seen in mythology as the staff of Hermes, who was the messenger for the gods, conductor of the dead,
and protector of merchants and thieves. However, in modern days, the caduceus has become a symbol for medicine. In literature, authors typically use
symbols to better engage their readers in the story, by making them reflect and think about the story rather than just reading it. Symbols can also often
communicate more meaning than simply stating the idea itself. In Eugene Onegin by Alexander Pushkin, the moon is mentioned quite frequently. Upon
first reading the novel, the reader may not notice any significance with this. However, with further investigation it is easy to see that the moon
represents Tatyana and her mystical and mysterious ways. When the reader is first introduced to Tatyana at the party that Eugene Onegin (the "hero" of
the story) and Vladimir Lensky (a young poet who is in love with Tatyana's younger sister, Olga), the narrator goes into explaining how Tatyana was
an odd sort of girl, who was not in to childish games: Upon her balcony appearing,
She loved to greet Aurora's show,
When dancing stars are disappearing
Against the heavens' pallid glow,
When earth's horizon softly blushes,
And wind, the morning's herald, rushes,
And slowly day begins it flight.

Analysis Of Eugene O 'Neill's PlayThe Emperor Jones'
Eugene O'Neill is widely considered the most influential of American playwrights. He is called the "founder of modern drama in the United States",
and holds the title of the first American playwright to earn a Nobel Prize in literature. (O' Neill 794) His play, The Emperor Jones, is credited as
being one that provided" several firsts in American theatre history: the Provincetown Players first major hit, the first major role for an African
American actor on the legitimate Broadway stage (in houses where the audience was still racially segregated), and the play that secured O'Neill's
place as a writer for the high–art, experimental theatre worthy of international attention. (Steen 343) Basically, The Emperor Jones made Eugene
O'Neill.
The play is a psychological study of Brutus Jone's mind, his fears, visions and dream. "Tom– tom is part and parcel of the psychological action; at first
it is the call to war ; then it merges into the Emperor Jones' vision of the slaves working to its beat; finally it becomes is own throbbing, feverish

and psychology merge and the whole play is a long drama. Emperor Jones represents the breakdown of a Negroid mentally under the stress of fear and

Social Criticism In Anna Christie
In 1887, one year prior to Eugene O'Neill's birth, the first vote on women's suffrage is taken in the Senate and fails. (Scholastic). In 1955, the year
following O'Neill's death, a woman, Rosa Parks, became the symbol for the civil rights movement. While these two events can seem unrelated, they
frame the time in which Eugene O'Neill lived where the structure of gender roles in society experienced radical changes. Women received voting
rights, as well as more legal and workplace rights that had never existed before. Men also encountered change, given that World War I resulted in a
large segment of the male population leaving country. There is no doubt that literature has always been used as an avenue of social commentary;
however, O'Neill used his work in innovative ways to express his distaste at certain societal ideals. Doris M. Alexander writes, "The main trend in
Eugene O'Neill's social criticism is negative... Whatever hope he sees for man lies in individuals who may have the courage to possess their own
souls" (363). A prime of example of an individuals who do possess their own souls are present in Anna Christie. Anna and Marthy, the mainwoman
characters, are both examples of O'Neill's experiments into writing more well–rounded and independent women, much like the women of the 1920's.
Despite Marthy only appearing in the first act, her personality reveals itself so quickly that the audience does not need much more. In fact, O'Neill's

The Ugly American Character Analysis
The Ugly American Writing Assignment
There are two types of Americans that are portrayed in The Ugly American. The two types of Americans portrayed in The Ugly American are the
ethnocentric Americans, who believe that their ways are superior to all others, and don't really care about stopping the spread of communism; and then
there are the kind hearted Americans, who truly care about defeating communism. Through multiple characters we learn how these two types of
Americans think and how they represent not only themselves, but their country.
The ethnocentric Americans such as Louis Sears and Joe Bing show the reader how ignorant some of the Americans in the book are. They only cared
about living a privileged life. These ethnocentric Americans think they can do whatever they want however they want. Bing and ... Show more content

The authors want to show the reader how different cultures see Americans. It only takes one American for anotherculture to either judge or appreciate
the people and cuture that comes from being an American. For example, any of the Sarkhanese people who had the chance to meet Joe Bing or Lou
Sears would most likely think that all Americans are a bunch of scum. Sears and Bing give off the impression that Americans think they are the best of
the best, that as an American they are entitled to everything in world. But if you were Deong (before he turned communist) and got to Know John
Colvin or one of the Sarkhanese people that received help and information from Knox, then you would think that Americans were very generous people.
Unlike Sears and Bing, Colvin and Knox have shown other cultures that Americans can be great people. It's the first impression that counts, and that's
exactly the authors point of characterizing the characters the way they did. They wanted to show how a culture, such as the sahrkanese culture can
come to a conclusion with the influence of just one

The Raft of the 'Medusa' by Theodore Gericault
The Raft of the 'Medusa' by Theodore Gericault is considered by many to be one of the greatest paintings of Romantic Art. Here I will discuss
Romantic Art, some history behind the painting, the painting in general, and to prove why the first statement is true. If we are going to call this
painting Romantic Art one must first know what it actually is or have some sort of idea what is counted as Romanticism or as something that Romantics
would do. Romanticism celebrates the spontaneity and the use of the imagination. Abandoning tradition constraints of the art world to explore new and
creative ways of expression. Possibly seen as intuitive individualism and primacy of feeling. Romantics didn't reject reason but though emotions were

He interviewed the survivors, drew mutilated corpses in the Paris morgue, and had a model created in his studio of the raft. The painting was 16
feet 1 inch by 23 feet 6 inches so it is huge in size and the dramatic impact was just as amazing. This gave the people a record of an event that
happened in a time before photography. At first glance a viewer might just see people huddled on a raft together, a couple waving down a ship, and
trying to get someone off canvases attention while others try to keep those who are weaker on the raft. But if they look closer they might notice
other things of interest that are commonly found in Romanticism or Romantic Art. Gericault use of the double triangles in this image of the mast
and rope help keep the main focus on the people on the raft who are dying or dead. Suffering against heat, dehydration, starvation, and forced to
canalize each other to survive which is a true struggle against nature but also against ones self. It would be a very horrific and emotional experience
for anyone to have to choose between eating another human being or dying of starvation. He focuses on the true emotion, the disgusting horror of the
event, and what had to be done or was done to survive. It has very rustic looking colors in the image, reds, oranges, yellows, browns, blacks, and grays
that give it an autumn like color theme. This gives you a sense that they

Denial in The Iceman Cometh Essay
Denial in The Iceman Cometh Denial is the refusal to admit the truth. It is the refusal to accept or acknowledge the reality or validity of a thing or
idea. Many characters in The Iceman Cometh suffer from denial and false hope. O'Neill places these characters in the appropriate setting in which
they are able to fantasize about their dreams. Amidst the drunken and misguided characters, O'Neill presents a few that the reader builds hope and
sympathy for. Each character uses a pipe dream in order to be able to become blind to their downfalls and to reality. In the bar setting, characters in

It is a false belief or a false hope that the character holds on to. This is in order to blind them of reality. By embracing a pipe dream, the characters
feel they do not have to face the bitter reality that confronts them. The pipe dreams make life tolerable for the time being (55). Rocky, the bartender
at Hope's bar, denies the fact that he is a pimp. Because he is a bartender, he believes he cannot be a pimp. He blatantly disregards the fact that he
takes money from two prostitutes and protects them as well. He says to one of the prostitutes, "'What would you do if I wasn't around? Give it all
to some pimp'" (O'Neill 603). The sad fact that O'Neill presents is that Rocky truly believes that he is not a pimp. He has fooled nobody but
himself, and doesn't even realize it. He also holds a pipe dream of being able to open a bar of his own someday. Margie and Pearl, the two
prostitutes, have pipe dreams of one day getting married. They are also living in a state of denial. Margie says, "'Anyway, we wouldn't keep no
pimp, like we was reg'lar old whores. We ain't dat bad'" (603). "These characters live their life through blind eyes" (Orr 90). They refuse to see who
and what they really are (91). These three characters deny who they are and refuse to accept it. Although they all have good qualities, they do not

Themes In The Bald Soprano
In this world where everyone seeks to be heard especially in an age of social media, words are exchanged mechanically; words are spoken for the
sake of speaking. People talk about unimportant and pointless matters and treat them as one would the most important matters in the world. For
instance, many people spend a lot of time talking about gossips, money, social status, and other topics of conversation that ultimately lack depth,
significance, and meaning. This idea that people's priorities are placed incorrectly emerges as one of the main themes of Eugene Ionesco's play "The
Bald Soprano." Beneath the chaotic, hilarious, and seemingly nonsensical staging of the one–act play "Ang Sopranong Kalbo," directed by Dexter M.
Santos, which is Rolando Tinio's Filipino translation of Donald M. Allen's English translation of Eugene Ionesco's The Bald Soprano, the play
effectively emphasizes the absurdity of people's preoccupations. By lessening its focus on other themes such as time and reality, which are also
fundamental themes of Ionesco's play, the adaptation depicts a stronger, more intense absurdist play that questions the priorities of humans. In terms of
characterization and plot, not much has changed in the adaptation. This is probably because Ionesco's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Man On The Moon Papers
The Last Man on the Moon "The Last Man on the Moon" is a film to show viewers what being an astronaut is like through their own experiences. This
film brings to light exactly how hard being an astronaut can be and the price that the Apollo men paid to stay in the NASA program. When Apollo
astronaut Eugene Cernan stepped off the moon in 1972, he left his footprints and his daughter's initials in the lunar dust. Released on February 26,
2016 "The Last Man on the Moon" is directed by Mark Craig. Eugene Cernan tells the story of the first travels to the moon and the journey from his
standpoint. Over forty years later, Cernan is ready to tell his legendary story about the enthusiasm he has for the program, the bravery it takes, and
the sacrifices he has made to be where he is today. Film maker Mark Craig, showcases Cernan's enthusiasm and burning ambition for how he turned a
fantasy of going to space into his reality. Craig highlighted the encouragement of Cernan's father, and how it pushed his ambition even further.
Cernan's father told him "I don't care whether you're in a classroom or on a football field, just do your best and someday, I promise you, you're going
to surprise yourself" and that is exactly what Cernan did (Andrew Cernan). The film shows how Cernan, at the age of twenty–two, was in the Navy as
an aviator pilot. This marked only the beginning of what is still to come for Cernan's career. Director Craig interviewed Fred Baldwin, a formal
Naval aviator, who was trained and often flew among the other men with Cernan, "We were pretty impressed with ourselves. We had big egos, but
I think you have to have a big ego to do the intense flying that we are trained to do" says Baldwin. The men were often in and out of San Diego
flying off aircraft carriers, and a few years later Cernan landed the title of being Captain. Captain Cernan was one of the fourteen astronauts selected
by NASA in October of 1963 to go to the moon. No astronaut had even achieved orbit in space before, so the mission to the moon seemed far–fetched
at the time. In the film Director Craig added clips of how the astronauts selected were looked at as being famous, "as if they walked around with halos
on their head" states Cernan, "they

Neoclassical And Romantic Styles Of Art
The Neoclassical and Romanticism periods in the arts, gave way to new styles of painting. By this time, the patrons commissioning art varied from
the previous periods. Added to the list was the Monarchy who also commissioned art, and made it public for all to see. Although, not everyone
approved of their classism, and their riches, while their subjects had very little on. I will discuss the effect the French Revolution had on both styles of
art, Neoclassical and Romanticism and show how the same subject was viewed very differently by the artists in favor of the French Revolution, and by
the artist opposed to it, and the Monarchy.
For the Neoclassical style, I selected Jacques–Louis David's Napoleon Crossing the Alps from 1801. It was hard not to select one of David's unofficial
tributes to Napoleon, as he was a big fan. I selected Napoleons Crossing the Alps specifically, because it is a prime example of how David used his
painting skills to convey a selective message, in this case, that Napoleon was a great heroic General. As Ben Pollitt highlights, "The fact that
Napoleon did not actually lead his troops over the Alps but followed a couple of days after them, travelling on a narrow path on the back of a mule is
not the point!" (Pollitt via khanacademy.org, n.d.). In other words, David totally painted a delusional story, contrary to what actually happened. Yet,
David painted a taller, stronger looking Napoleon, riding on a beautiful and muscular horse. The

Romanticism In Eugene Delacroix's Liberty Leading The People
Eugene Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People is an oil painting that stands at 8′ 6″ x 10′ 8″, commemorating the July Revolution of France
in 1830. The painting, when first displayed at the 1831 Salon, an annual exhibition of French Art, was met with strong reactions of disapproval due to
his Romanticism influences and was later banned from public viewing. The 19th century experienced a transition from the Enlightenment Period of
logic and reason, to the Romanticism artistic movement, of which Eugene Delacroix was a leading figure. Romanticism, as explained by Kathryn
Calley Galitz, emphasized subjectivity, imagination, and emotion, much of which is evident in Liberty Leading the People. Delacroix, instead of
painting an actual scene of warfare, chose to balance out the chaotic nature of battle by incorporating both realism and idealism into his painting.
Zelazko explains that Delacroix did not participate in the uprising because of his dependence on royal commissions, but instead chose to take part by
creating a work of art that overwhelmingly encompasses all aspects of that historic day. Posthumously, the painting was moved to the Louvre in Paris,
France where the response was more favorable, and today critics regard his work as a masterpiece with a unique take on this historical event. In

Tragic Typhus Epidemic Analysis
During the holocaust, an estimated 11,000,000 people died at the hands of the Nazis. Most of those victims died in concentration camps ("Victims").
Millions of lives were lost, but thousands more were saved. Dr. Eugene Lazowski saved thousands of lives with a fake typhus epidemic by
discovering a way to fake typhus, making Polish people appear ill to get areas quarantined, and completely fooling the Nazis.
During World War II, epidemic typhus spread rapidly throughout towns and killed thousands of people (Cricket). Typhus scared the Nazis more than

Lazowski remained relatively quiet about his role in the war until his death in 2006, never even talking to his own wife about the thousands of lives

evidence against him, and that he had no chance of surviving if he chose to remain in Rozwadow. He fled Poland with his family and moved to
Chicago, where he got his American medical license and became a professor of pediatrics at the university of Illinois ("Dr. Eugene Lazowski"). Dr.

diplomacy in 1950s Southeast Asia. They identify the characteristics and effects of both inept and skilled diplomacy. The book highlights knowledge of
language, history, and culture as critical components to the ability to influence indigenous populations. In many ways the situations and characters
described in the book mirror situations and challenges faced by Special Operations Forces (SOF) today. Special Operations Imperatives are a planning
tool that SOF use to influence people and situations they encounter. In order to understand the influence and effects of proper application of the Special

Five Lessons Learned from “the Ugly American”
Introduction
There are tens of thousands of "how–to" books, but "The Ugly American" is unique in that it's actually a "how–not–to" book. Published in 1958, the
action takes place in the early 1950s at the height of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States of America. Set primarily in the
fictional Asian country of Sarkhan, the struggle between Russian Communists and American Foreign Service personnel plays out battle by battle
through examples of military and political events riddled with "Ugly American" social faux pas.
In Lederer's and Burdick's book, the day–by–day business of American policy implementation and foreign aid to other countries is described. Central to

It is interesting to see how foreign culture is seen through different eyes in each of the personal mini–stories that comprise this book.
Issue No. 3
Just as the character of Louis Krupitzyn takes many smart and savvy actions in The Ugly American, he takes many unethical actions too. The one that
stood out the most was when he changes the wording on the labels of bags of American aid rice to read "Gift of Russia"–in other words, he takes
credit for aid that isn't Russia's.
Almost everybody does his or her job with a goal in mind, and in a very tangible way, Krupitzyn's action helped him get closer to his goal. But that
doesn't make it right. Simply because his main goal was to spread communism to Sarkhan within 30 months, taking credit for work that isn't yours is
unacceptable, even if it furthers your agenda. The ends do not justify the means.
Issue No. 4
One of the books most obvious arguments is that we spend billions on the wrong aid projects while overlooking the almost costless and far more
helpful ones. Sears undermines a Wisconsin dairyman's self–started project to raise nutrition levels in the Sarkhan countryВside, thwarts a band of
anti–Communist irregulars formed by a militant Massachusetts priest, and orchestrates the dismissal of his more capable successor, who fails to
convince Washington of an impending coup. He does this all because these efforts get in the way of his big, self–serving plans that do not benefit

Delacroix Liberty Leading The People Analysis
Scholars all agree that EugГЁne Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People (1830) represents a commemoration of the July Revolution with an allegorical
figure of Liberty guiding French citizens over a barricade. While nobody offers an alternate reading of the subject, the methods used vary between
scholars. The hybridization of formalism, biography, and social history can be seen as the standard approach to this work. While this approach on its
own has lead to successful readings of the painting, some of the best analyses come from scholars who included other methodologies in their
approach to the painting. The inclusion of feminism and Marxist in readings of this work allow scholars to address the obviously present themes of
gender and class. However, some additional approaches are more successful than others, as scholars who attempt to implement psychoanalysis are
less successful due to their evidence being based in the artist's own writings. While there have been a wide range of approaches used in the study of
Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People, there is a severe lack of a postcolonial lens. Considering how prevalent this methodology is in studies of other
works by Delacroix, a postcolonial analysis combined with the standard hybrid approach used in all other studies would be a worthwhile addition of
the current collection of scholarship.
It is important to note that iconography and semiotics also play a major role in the scholarship on Liberty Leading the People. Because

Romanticism In The Romantic Period And Porphyria's Love
The Romantic age is a period where, "for the first time in history, people were able to express themselves and their feelings as they wished rather than
as society dictated" (Handout). This period emphasizes humanity's spontaneous actions, passions, and emotions rather than logic or reason. Unlike the
Enlightenment era, "the Romantic era essentially replaced the old way of life had been lived with a new style of living life" (Handout). Humanity's
focus leaps forward into a new view of creative imagination as a portal to transcendent experiences and spiritual truths. This deepened admiration of all
the beauties of nature is widely known as, Romanticism. "Inspired by the work of eighteenth–century Enlightenment thinkers," Robert Browning and
Charles Baudelaire's works of "imagination is deepened due to the Industrial and French Revolutions." Although these two poets share a twisted and
perverse perspective of love for a woman, they both have very distinctive and dark ways of making their audience cringe.
Robert Browning, the man whose mastery of the dramatic monologue made him one of the best Victorian poets, opens his poem "Porphyria's Love"
with a thrilling, yet romantic tone that leaves the reader with skeptical question. After Porphyria gets all settled from being outside in the rain storm,
she begins to remove her wet clothing. Beginning to transition into modern style, the narrator states;
"Which done, she rose, and from her form Withdrew the dripping cloak and shawl,
And laid her soiled gloves by, untied
Her hat and let the damp hair fall" (Browning 11–13).
Porphyria rapidly moves forward and takes her simplistic beauty to a blatantly dangerous level of sexuality as stated;
She put my arm about her waist,
And made her smooth white shoulder bare,
And all her yellow hair displaced,
And stooping, made my cheek lie there,
And spread, o'er all, her yellow hair" (Browning 14–18).
The speaker does not respond verbally or physically up until this point. That is before Porphyria utters her love for him; "Murmuring how she loved
me" (Browning 21). Because of her immortal sin of sexual desires, the narrators simple and innocent love evolves into an over the top, obsessive, and
twisted passion that is

modernist movements of his time as he primarily sought to create "modern American drama" that would rival the great works of European modernists
such as Ibsen, Strindberg and G.B. Shaw. O'Neill was a great admirer of classical theatre and as a young man he had read Friedrich Nietzsche's work

It is remarkable how O'Neill contrives to preserve the Chorus, which is a fundamental element of the Greek tragedy. Although it is not as dramatic as
the tragic Chorus of the classical Greek plays, each and every of the three parts of "Mourning Becomes Electra" begins with the performance of a
chorus formed of different men and women that comment upon the Mannons, the history of their family, revealing to the audience details about the
behavior and the character of the heroes. Moreover, the setting chosen by O'Neill is similar to the classical one used by the Greeks. It is known that
in Aeschylus' times a wooden wall was used as a background of the setting, the wall usually stood for a palace or a temple and this exactly the same
as in O'Neill's trilogy, as the greatest part of the action takes place in front of the Mannon's residence which is described as being an enormous stone
mansion that has the aspect of a Greek temple(the temple of god Apollo) "with a white wooden portico, with six tall columns"[2]. However that was
the typical construction for a house that belonged to an American aristocratic family in the XIX century. In "Mourning Becomes Electra", O'Neill
brought into consonance the fundamental traits of the Greek tragedy and the specific elements of modern theatre, thus creating a

The Ugly American By William J. Deming And Eugene Burdick
The Ugly American, published in 1958, by William J. Lederer and Eugene Burdick, depicts the many United States foreign policy errors of the time.
Counterinsurgency is a parallel to the novel while the novel depicts the failures of American diplomats during a time in which Communism was
succeeding. The diplomats' lack of knowledge and sensitivity to the culture caused the U.S diplomatic corps to fail. Communism was particularly
succeeding in Southeast Asia when Vietnam split in two along the 17th parallel. Sarkhan represents Southeast Asia in the novel. The Ugly American
soon after being published became a rude awakening for America, but yet the United States could not fathom the idea that one size does not fit all.
Counterinsurgency is the act against the activities of guerrilla warfare tactics or revolutionaries by military or political action. In a sense, states are
trying to make peace without war. Counterinsurgency came into effect after the end of World War 1. Increasing mechanization is one the main reasons
for this. The United States in an attempt to be proactive, as always, adopted a new way in which to possibly defeat insurgents.
The outcomes of counterinsurgency have shifted partially because of the collision of World War 1 and industrialization resulting in a new system of
military organization. The outcomes of counterinsurgency just like the outcomes of any conflict are a win, draw, or loss. A win constitutes that the
insurgents have been defeated. A draw is

Romanticism In The Raft Of The Medusa
Romanticism, like most artistic movements, can best be understood when juxtaposed with history. It was a time of uprisings and conflicts, of liberal
thought and confrontation–and the winds of change swept away everyone and everything, from monarchies and governments to French farmers and
salon owners. A new way of thinking and looking at the world was proposed; the shift revealed itself in the works of new artistic masters who broke
out onto the scene, shocking the critics and the public (mostly bourgeois, old masters, and nobles) with their new styles that approached art in a way
that challenged all traditions. Such changes can be tracked from the mass of altered techniques and change of focus, usually very manifest in most
paintings, and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His then–unorthodox landscape paintings not only are touching to the eye and the heart, but also provide much food for thought and deep
contemplation. If you take a look at several of Friedrich's works, you'll be able to discover that most of those landscapes include the back(s) of one
or several people, who, like us, are peering over the panorama. The structure allows us to (1) put ourselves into that person's viewpoint, as if we were
on that very site, feeling the winds brushing our faces and carrying smell of the open air, and (2) wonder what worries or thoughts are occupying that
person's

Special Forces Soldiers in The Ugly American

  • 1. Special Forces Soldiers Used in Book, The Ugly American by... Special Forces soldiers work in foreign lands with situations which are not always completely clear from its beginning. The Special Operation Imperatives serve as the base for success by providing the framework to develop and assist the host nation in achieving their desired goals. Through this essay I will use the novel "The Ugly American" (William J. Lederer & Eugene Burdick) to provide context to the benefits of applying such imperatives and the consequences of improper application. I will bring to light the actions of the characters and depict the reasons why the application of the imperative made the character succeed or fail in his desired goal. The first character that I will discuss is Honorable Louis Sears, American Ambassador to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He informed the prince that he personally did not care about the resemblance to him in the picture, but proclaiming that it hurt relations between the two countries. The prince, aware of Sears' shallowness, directed a positive article to be published in order to relieve tensions. A third failure in understanding the operational environment occurred when Sears coordinated the delivery of rice from Haidho to the stricken area in Sarkhan. His lack of understanding of the Sarkhanese and communist tactics was reciprocated by his subordinates. The latter became evident when the rice bags were labeled as if coming from the communists and no USIS employee realized what it meant. In addition, there was no effort from US employees to talk or interact with locals at the destination. The confusion led the Sarkhanese to believe that the rice bags in fact were provided by the communists. A good description of Sears' failure in understanding the operational environment was provided by Ambassador Louis Krupitzyn on his report to Moscow. Krupitzyn wrote how Sears kept his subordinates away from the Sarkhanese and didn't allow them to "go into the hills." This disconnect between the American employees and the Sarkhanese provided Moscow with the ability to freely connect with the population and turn the table ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The literary Trope of a Superfluous Man in Russian... Russian literature was very much influenced by the literary trope known as the superfluous man. This trope was ideal for writers to describe the shortcomings of Russian high–class society. There has been a witnessed general consistency when dealing with the superfluous man such as the exhibition of cynicism and existential angst, while indulging in vices such as affairs, gambling and duelling. These individuals are typically from noble birth yet refused to fit into society and disregard the societal norms. This trend can be witnessed through many examples such as Alexander Pushkin's "Eugene Onegin" and "Diary of a Superfluous Man" by Ivan Turgenev. The characters described by these authors reflects the lifestyles of such a man, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Yet despite all his inherited wealth and connections he shrugs off social norms as he indulges in his sin and poetry, and because of such subversive poems in exiled. Onegin was quite entranced despite frivalities to find love, yet still cynical and poetic by such fate "He was convinced, a kindred creature would be allied to him by fate; that, meanwhile, pinched and glum of feature, from day to day she could but wait; and he believed his friends were ready to put on chains for him, and steady their hand to grapple slander's cup, in his defence, and smash it up" (II.VIII) Despite Pushkin's Don Juan motifs, he settles down with a young noblewoman, Natalia, and like the typical superfluous man his love for this women leads to his misery. By enticing a duel, which he has done numerous times, another example of his idleness; he meets his fate as he is fatally wounded outside of St. Petersburg. • 3. Eugene Delacroix Heroic Figures And The Status Viatoris... McCann, Carmen L. 2006. "Eugene Delacroix's Heroic Figures and the Status Viatoris." Constructions Of Death, Mourning & Memory Conference, October 27–29, 2006: Proceedings 29–32. McCann argues that Eugene Delacroix included status viatoris, representations of a state between life and death, in his works and discusses their importance to depicting a heroic death. This chapter looks at Delacroix's works, including Liberty Leading the People from, multiple approaches, including biography, social history, and semiotics. They begin by looking at Delacroix's biography and his connection with the revolution he painted. McCann then goes into the social history by addressing not only those who participated in the revolution and are thus depicted in the painting, but also looking at the motivation for starting revolution. He then goes on to look at the lack iconography usually associated with death on the lying figures in the foreground and the implication that within specifically marking them as "dead," the bodies exist in a place between life and death. This semiotic, post–structuralist approach is useful when engaging with this painting because it allows for multiple interpretations and readings of heroic death in Delacroix's work. The intersection of all three approaches provide strong evidence for McCann's argument. They prove to be a useful combination when approaching Delacriox's Liberty Leading the People. Mora, Stephanie. "Delacroix's Art Theory and His Definition of Classicism." Journal of Aesthetic Education 34, no. 1 (2000): 57–75. This article looks broadly at Delacroix's body of work and provides many approaches. The two most prominent approaches used would have to be social history and biography, but given the time period and subject matter of many of Delacroix's work, it is not surprising that these two would be popular. Mora does a good job at addressing the issue of self–perception by looking at how Delacroix like to depict himself not only in his paintings, but his writings as well. Through this conversation, she challenges the use of psychoanalysis as an approach to Delacroix work and highlights how using his self fashioning as evidence does not hold up for a strong analysis. • 4. The Theatre Of The Absurd Analysis The Theatre of the Absurd is a collection of plays written after World War II that were considered of having ridiculous and random ideals. Many of these plays came from Europe, including Rhinoceros by Ionesco. In Rhinoceros, the main character Berenger is a man who is not keeping up with himself and is having a midlife crisis. Everyone else in the town is living a normal life when the townspeople start to turn into rhinoceroses. With his differentness and being so out of place, he is the only one left as a human over a rhinoceros. Now that Berenger wants to be like everyone else and turn into a rhinoceros, he cannot because of his major differences. In the play, Rhinoceros, different aspects of theTheatre of the Absurd come through in the crazy storyline created by Ionesco. No communication and no logic are two of the aspects of the absurd writing concepts during this time period. One of the absurd aspects of no communication is found through the lines of the play. No communication is one of the absurdist aspects in the play Rhinoceros that reoccurs throughout the storyline. Towards the beginning of the play, the characters find that a rhinoceros is trampling through the town. The housewife finds that her cat has been trampled on by the strange creature, and is very upset. She wails to the others: "It ran over my cat, it ran over my cat!" (Ionesco 26). • 5. How Did The French Revolution Influence Art The French Revolution and the Art it Influenced "Liberty, equality, fraternity, or death;– the last, much the easiest to bestow, O Guillotine!" wrote the famous author Charles Dickens, in his classic book, The Tale of Two Cities. The French Revolution (1789–1796) was a fight for liberty and equality, which ultimately led to the execution of Queen Marie Antoinette and King Louis XVI, by way of guillotine. And, eventually Napoleon Bonaparte became the ruler of France. This was a transforming time in not just France's history, but European history and World history. The people of France were fed up with the monarchy and the burden of high taxes, as the monarch rulers squandered money away while the people faced famine and poverty. The Revolution was so powerful that artists not only painted about it, but they became revolutionaries themselves, like Jacques–Louis David, who is famous for his works, Oath of the Horratii, and Napoleon Crossing the Alps. In 1830, the second French Revolution broke out and this was known as the "Three Glorious Days", in which the people of France protested Charles X after he imposed ordinances that prevented freedom of the press and increased the power of his monarchy ("French Revolution", n.d.). The famous allegorical painting by Eugene Delacroix, Liberty Leading the People, is a historical depiction of the second French Revolution and illustrates the connection between socioeconomic and political issues, and art. This paper will look at David's Napoleon Crossing the Alps, and Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People and analyze the impact of the French Revolution on art of those periods. Jacques Louis David (1748–1825) was one of the most famous Neoclassist painters, as well as a devout revolutionary in 19th century France. He painted works that some consider propaganda of the time, yet he did so in pure Neoclassical fashion (Pollitt, n.d.). Eventually, he became the personal painter for Napoleon Bonaparte, as he continued to support the revolution through art. In Napoleon Crossing the Alps, we see a diagonal, yet static composition. The diagonal that is created by the horse is reminiscent of Baroque figures, yet it lacks the movement that the Baroque style portrayed so well. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Eugene Onegin has inherited his uncle's estate giving him access to acres of hunting ground on which he meets Lensky, whom he becomes rather good friends with. The friendship does not last long however, as a vast misunderstanding comes between them. Lensky had recently been engaged to Olga, a neighbor of Onegin's, and finds himself incredibly joyful and very much in love. Lensky sees Onegin dancing with his fiancГ©', and takes Onegin to be attempting to seduce his fiancГ©, yet this is not the case. • 8. The Romantic Hero in Pechorin, Onegin, and the Demon Essay... The Romantic Hero in Pechorin, Onegin, and the Demon Through examining the works of Lermontov, A Hero of Our Time, and "The Demon," as well as Pushkin's Eugene Onegin, we can see the similarities between Pechorin, the Demon, and Onegin and how each character embodies the qualities of the romantic hero. A romantic hero is a very contradicting character. For example, in the History of Russian Literature by Charles A. Moser, he describes the romantic hero as having "the anguish of emptiness; the trembling anxieties of a shallow self–love – as well as genuine power and courage; noble aspirations along with ignorance and poor upbringing" (137). All of the traits stated above are very conflicting. Pechorin, Onegin and the Demon, being the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pechorin, being the tactless character he is, treats women as an incentive for endless conquests and does not consider them worthy of any particular respect. He considers women, such as Princess Mary, to be little more than a romantic game and they have no meaning to him. This is shown in his comment on Princess Mary: "I often wonder why I'm trying so hard to win the love of a girl I have no desire to seduce and whom I'd never marry" (Lermontov, 126). This quote is a perfect example of how Pechorin can be extremely self–serving and disregard the feelings of others. It also exemplifies his inability to return to the strong feelings of love. Toward the end of the novel we explore Pechorin's final adventures that lead to his downfall and isolation from society, resulting in his death. It is in his final adventures that we see Pechorin take a turn for the worse as he says, "And perhaps tomorrow I'll die...so why bother to live" (Lermontov 157). In this passage it becomes clear as day that Pechorin has fallen into a deep depression. The constant change in personality and character is the exact reason that explains how Pechorin is a perfect example of the literary romantic hero. Pechorin describes his own personality as self–destructive, and he came to the realization that he doesn't understand his purpose as he constantly questions why he is involved in many situations throughout the novel. • 9. Russian Duels In A Hero Of Our Time And Eugene Onegin Narrative Russian writers seem to enjoy inserting a duel in their literature. There's Pierre's duel with Dolohov in Tolstoy's War and Peace; there's Onegin's duel with Lensky in Pushkin's Eugene Onegin; there's Pechorin's duel with Grushnitsky in Lermontov's A Hero of Our Time, and Bazarov duel with Pavel in Turgenev's Fathers and Sons. In this paper, however, making comparisons between the duels from A Hero of Our Time and Eugene Onegin will be the primary focus. When it comes to deciding if dueling was a noble form of conflict resolution, both writers seem to indirectly portray to the reader that duels are unimpressive and ineffective. Both writers emphasize on the challenges that could happen before, during, and after a Russian duel. If the writers wanted to portray to the readers that duels were honorable, then they would have not displayed the challenges that each character faced while they participated in the duel. A similarity between the two duels of A Hero of Our Time and Eugene Onegin is who ultimately ends up being killed. Both Lermontov and Onegin kill a character that was foolish, and who, perhaps, should not have died. In A Hero of Our Time, Grushnitsky foolishly challenges Pechorin after mistakenly assuming that Pechorin snuck into Princess Mary's residence to see her when she was home alone. However, Pechorin had actually snuck into the residence to see Vera, but Grushnitsky, blinded by jealousy, does not realize the truth. During the duel, Pechorin gains ... This dress is together with a belt at her waist and it has dropped to below her breasts, which shows her underarm hair. All of these were marked as vulgar by classical artists and they probably impacted on the French artists and society deeply. In addition, the significance of contemporary art can be demonstrated since Louis–Philip understood Delacroix's indication and decided to celebrate his glorious succession to the throne by purchasing the painting. On the other hand, the great influence of "Liberty Leading the People" also can be seen in modern society. In 2008, Coldplay decided to use "Liberty Leading the People" as their album cover, which named "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends". The title of the album was taken from Frida Kahlo's painting, namely "Viva La Vida". This Spanish phrase translates to "Long live life" and had made an impression on Chris Martin, who is the singer of Coldplay. Kahlo wrote it onto her painting and would like to celebrate life even though life had not been kind to her and she was going through considerable pain. • 11. Ugly, Ugly American, By Robert J. Lederer And Eugene... Zachery Ringstrom Professor Sullivan English 5–01 10/2/14 Ugly, Ugly Americans At the heart of nearly every world conflict, the United States of America is either at the epicenter, or in some way, majorly involved; this has caused disdain among many nations of the world–and their disdain for the United States and her means has been demonstrated in various attacks, kidnappings, and other acts of terror. And while there are plenty of Americans going off into the world making effective, meaningful change that doesn't spur the resentment of other nations, it is easily seen that there are many Americans–a majority–that continue to give other nations the impression that Americans are pompous, ugly people. The criteria of Americans being judged as either Good Americans or Ugly Americans is derived from William J. Lederer and Eugene Burdick's genius novel, The Ugly American, which gives in–depth descriptions of good and ugly Americans through talented storytelling–stories based on actual people and events. The authors foster a sharp contrast between what an Ugly American is and what a Good American is; they begin their novel with an example of an Ugly American–ambassador to Sarkhan: Louis Sears. He is an American who believes everything is done better the "American way." He refuses to learn the language of the people he is an ambassador to because he regards it as unimportant–he believes that anyone who is important or worth talking to will know English. • 12. This poem in particular is a journey to understanding these two realities. In his work, The Voyage,Charles Baudelaire describes the longing of the soul to understand the unknown, but upon searching the discovery that humankind around the globe remains the same. Charles Baudelaire's poetry is a great example of when two seemingly opposing styles of writing, romanticism and realism, meet. The two intertwine in this work to form a masterpiece of natural beauty and painful realism. His use of nature to drive many of his deeper contemplations gives this work an air of romanticism. He contrast this beauty by discussing topics that a writer of strict romanticism would typically stray away from, such as the strongly negative reality of human behavior. However, the combination of these two styles that appear to stand in opposition of one another is part of the unique and haunting beauty that Baudelaire offers in his poetry. He won several commissions from the royal court after establishing his esteem as a portrait artist. During the period of enlightenment, the artistic works of Goya were prominent throughout Spain. Goya introduced royal workshops, which spanned over four monarchies. He painted several cartoons and haunting scenes for the royal palaces. Hugues Duroy de Chaumareys, who was lacking in both authority and experience, was appointed by the king to be the Captain of the ship (Brandt 132). When the ship ran aground, officers and officials filled up the life boats, leaving about 150 men to float on a quickly made raft with nothing but a small amount of wine for sustenance, forcing them to cannibalism. The raft was found 13 days later, with only 15 men left living. When Theodore Gericault found out about this, he set out to seek justice for the tragedy that was the Medusa (Gericault video kanopy). Alothough it was initially titled "Ship Wreak Scene", the Raft of the Medusa was immediately recongnized by the pubic as an image of the horrific event that it was (Gericault video kanopy). Not only were critics appalled at the romantic art style defined by the "spiraling energy and brushstrokes", but the general public recognized the "scathing commentary on the ineptitude of the restoration government" (Mary's video). Paintings of this size were normally reserved for heroic subjects. However, this painting was the direct opposite of that. It is directly addressing the monarch's "indifference to the suffering of others", and this message was not lost on its viewers (Brandt 133). • 16. Symbolism In Eugene Onegin Symbolism can be seen in everyday life. For example, the image of a caduceus will normally invoke the thoughts of medicine or a doctor's office. But a caduceus does not mean medicine. In fact, it is seen in mythology as the staff of Hermes, who was the messenger for the gods, conductor of the dead, and protector of merchants and thieves. However, in modern days, the caduceus has become a symbol for medicine. In literature, authors typically use symbols to better engage their readers in the story, by making them reflect and think about the story rather than just reading it. Symbols can also often communicate more meaning than simply stating the idea itself. In Eugene Onegin by Alexander Pushkin, the moon is mentioned quite frequently. Upon first reading the novel, the reader may not notice any significance with this. However, with further investigation it is easy to see that the moon represents Tatyana and her mystical and mysterious ways. When the reader is first introduced to Tatyana at the party that Eugene Onegin (the "hero" of the story) and Vladimir Lensky (a young poet who is in love with Tatyana's younger sister, Olga), the narrator goes into explaining how Tatyana was an odd sort of girl, who was not in to childish games: Upon her balcony appearing, She loved to greet Aurora's show, When dancing stars are disappearing Against the heavens' pallid glow, When earth's horizon softly blushes, And wind, the morning's herald, rushes, And slowly day begins it flight. In 1955, the year following O'Neill's death, a woman, Rosa Parks, became the symbol for the civil rights movement. While these two events can seem unrelated, they frame the time in which Eugene O'Neill lived where the structure of gender roles in society experienced radical changes. Women received voting rights, as well as more legal and workplace rights that had never existed before. Men also encountered change, given that World War I resulted in a large segment of the male population leaving country. There is no doubt that literature has always been used as an avenue of social commentary; however, O'Neill used his work in innovative ways to express his distaste at certain societal ideals. Doris M. Alexander writes, "The main trend in Eugene O'Neill's social criticism is negative... Whatever hope he sees for man lies in individuals who may have the courage to possess their own souls" (363). People talk about unimportant and pointless matters and treat them as one would the most important matters in the world. For instance, many people spend a lot of time talking about gossips, money, social status, and other topics of conversation that ultimately lack depth, significance, and meaning. Allen's English translation of Eugene Ionesco's The Bald Soprano, the play effectively emphasizes the absurdity of people's preoccupations. By lessening its focus on other themes such as time and reality, which are also fundamental themes of Ionesco's play, the adaptation depicts a stronger, more intense absurdist play that questions the priorities of humans. This film brings to light exactly how hard being an astronaut can be and the price that the Apollo men paid to stay in the NASA program. When Apollo astronaut Eugene Cernan stepped off the moon in 1972, he left his footprints and his daughter's initials in the lunar dust. Released on February 26, 2016 "The Last Man on the Moon" is directed by Mark Craig. Eugene Cernan tells the story of the first travels to the moon and the journey from his standpoint. Over forty years later, Cernan is ready to tell his legendary story about the enthusiasm he has for the program, the bravery it takes, and the sacrifices he has made to be where he is today. Film maker Mark Craig, showcases Cernan's enthusiasm and burning ambition for how he turned a fantasy of going to space into his reality. Craig highlighted the encouragement of Cernan's father, and how it pushed his ambition even further. Cernan's father told him "I don't care whether you're in a classroom or on a football field, just do your best and someday, I promise you, you're going to surprise yourself" and that is exactly what Cernan did (Andrew Cernan). The film shows how Cernan, at the age of twenty–two, was in the Navy as an aviator pilot. This marked only the beginning of what is still to come for Cernan's career. Director Craig interviewed Fred Baldwin, a formal Naval aviator, who was trained and often flew among the other men with Cernan, "We were pretty impressed with ourselves. We had big egos, but I think you have to have a big ego to do the intense flying that we are trained to do" says Baldwin. The men were often in and out of San Diego flying off aircraft carriers, and a few years later Cernan landed the title of being Captain. By this time, the patrons commissioning art varied from the previous periods. Added to the list was the Monarchy who also commissioned art, and made it public for all to see. Although, not everyone approved of their classism, and their riches, while their subjects had very little on. I will discuss the effect the French Revolution had on both styles of art, Neoclassical and Romanticism and show how the same subject was viewed very differently by the artists in favor of the French Revolution, and by the artist opposed to it, and the Monarchy. For the Neoclassical style, I selected Jacques–Louis David's Napoleon Crossing the Alps from 1801. It was hard not to select one of David's unofficial tributes to Napoleon, as he was a big fan. I selected Napoleons Crossing the Alps specifically, because it is a prime example of how David used his painting skills to convey a selective message, in this case, that Napoleon was a great heroic General. • 27. Romanticism In Eugene Delacroix's Liberty Leading The People Eugene Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People is an oil painting that stands at 8′ 6″ x 10′ 8″, commemorating the July Revolution of France in 1830. The painting, when first displayed at the 1831 Salon, an annual exhibition of French Art, was met with strong reactions of disapproval due to his Romanticism influences and was later banned from public viewing. The 19th century experienced a transition from the Enlightenment Period of logic and reason, to the Romanticism artistic movement, of which Eugene Delacroix was a leading figure. Romanticism, as explained by Kathryn Calley Galitz, emphasized subjectivity, imagination, and emotion, much of which is evident in Liberty Leading the People. Delacroix, instead of painting an actual scene of warfare, chose to balance out the chaotic nature of battle by incorporating both realism and idealism into his painting. Zelazko explains that Delacroix did not participate in the uprising because of his dependence on royal commissions, but instead chose to take part by creating a work of art that overwhelmingly encompasses all aspects of that historic day. Posthumously, the painting was moved to the Louvre in Paris, France where the response was more favorable, and today critics regard his work as a masterpiece with a unique take on this historical event. In Liberty Leading the People, the unification of civilian fighters that form the rising French Republic march through the ruins of the fallen empire of King Charles X. The Encyclopedia ... • 28. Tragic Typhus Epidemic Analysis During the holocaust, an estimated 11,000,000 people died at the hands of the Nazis. Most of those victims died in concentration camps ("Victims"). Millions of lives were lost, but thousands more were saved. Dr. Eugene Lazowski saved thousands of lives with a fake typhus epidemic by discovering a way to fake typhus, making Polish people appear ill to get areas quarantined, and completely fooling the Nazis. During World War II, epidemic typhus spread rapidly throughout towns and killed thousands of people (Cricket). Typhus scared the Nazis more than any other communicable disease during the time period. Not only was typhus extremely contagious, it affected Germans more often than Poles, so they did everything in their power to avoid contact ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lazowski remained relatively quiet about his role in the war until his death in 2006, never even talking to his own wife about the thousands of lives he saved. Everything he did was done out of sheer kindness, and he remained remarkably modest about his work for the rest of his life ("Dr. Eugene Lazowski"). Towards the end of the war, Dr. Lazowski received word from a German soldier that he had treated that the Nazis had sufficient evidence against him, and that he had no chance of surviving if he chose to remain in Rozwadow. He fled Poland with his family and moved to Chicago, where he got his American medical license and became a professor of pediatrics at the university of Illinois ("Dr. Eugene Lazowski"). Dr. Lazowski and Dr. Matulewicz eventually published a memoir about their efforts called "Prywatna Wojna" or "Private War". • 29. The Ugly American William J. Lederer And Eugene Burdick Diplomacy is the art of dealing with foreign countries and their people in a sensitive and effective way. The ability to influence people and situations contributes to effective American diplomacy. In The Ugly American William J. Lederer and Eugene Burdick comment on the nature of American diplomacy in 1950s Southeast Asia. They identify the characteristics and effects of both inept and skilled diplomacy. The book highlights knowledge of language, history, and culture as critical components to the ability to influence indigenous populations. In many ways the situations and characters described in the book mirror situations and challenges faced by Special Operations Forces (SOF) today. Special Operations Imperatives are a planning tool that SOF use to influence people and situations they encounter. In order to understand the influence and effects of proper application of the Special Operations Imperatives the stories of Homer Atkins, Colonel Hillandale and Solomon Asch provide a setting to compare and contrast with my own experiences in Afghanistan, Iraq and Jordan. Homer Atkins understood the needs of the Sarkhanese people. He identified small–scale local options to address challenges affecting the day–to–day lives of the local population. He used local materials and sought out and accepted input from the local population to ensure long–term sustainment of a bicycle–operated water pump system. • 31. Five Lessons Learned from “the Ugly American” Introduction There are tens of thousands of "how–to" books, but "The Ugly American" is unique in that it's actually a "how–not–to" book. Published in 1958, the action takes place in the early 1950s at the height of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States of America. Set primarily in the fictional Asian country of Sarkhan, the struggle between Russian Communists and American Foreign Service personnel plays out battle by battle through examples of military and political events riddled with "Ugly American" social faux pas. In Lederer's and Burdick's book, the day–by–day business of American policy implementation and foreign aid to other countries is described. Central to The Ugly American is the historical reality of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is interesting to see how foreign culture is seen through different eyes in each of the personal mini–stories that comprise this book. Issue No. 3 Just as the character of Louis Krupitzyn takes many smart and savvy actions in The Ugly American, he takes many unethical actions too. The one that stood out the most was when he changes the wording on the labels of bags of American aid rice to read "Gift of Russia"–in other words, he takes credit for aid that isn't Russia's. Almost everybody does his or her job with a goal in mind, and in a very tangible way, Krupitzyn's action helped him get closer to his goal. But that doesn't make it right. Simply because his main goal was to spread communism to Sarkhan within 30 months, taking credit for work that isn't yours is unacceptable, even if it furthers your agenda. The ends do not justify the means. Issue No. 4 One of the books most obvious arguments is that we spend billions on the wrong aid projects while overlooking the almost costless and far more helpful ones. Sears undermines a Wisconsin dairyman's self–started project to raise nutrition levels in the Sarkhan countryВside, thwarts a band of anti–Communist irregulars formed by a militant Massachusetts priest, and orchestrates the dismissal of his more capable successor, who fails to convince Washington of an impending coup. He does this all because these efforts get in the way of his big, self–serving plans that do not benefit

  • 33. Delacroix Liberty Leading The People Analysis Scholars all agree that EugГЁne Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People (1830) represents a commemoration of the July Revolution with an allegorical figure of Liberty guiding French citizens over a barricade. While nobody offers an alternate reading of the subject, the methods used vary between scholars. The hybridization of formalism, biography, and social history can be seen as the standard approach to this work. While this approach on its own has lead to successful readings of the painting, some of the best analyses come from scholars who included other methodologies in their approach to the painting. The inclusion of feminism and Marxist in readings of this work allow scholars to address the obviously present themes of gender and class. However, some additional approaches are more successful than others, as scholars who attempt to implement psychoanalysis are less successful due to their evidence being based in the artist's own writings. While there have been a wide range of approaches used in the study of Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People, there is a severe lack of a postcolonial lens. Considering how prevalent this methodology is in studies of other works by Delacroix, a postcolonial analysis combined with the standard hybrid approach used in all other studies would be a worthwhile addition of the current collection of scholarship. It is important to note that iconography and semiotics also play a major role in the scholarship on Liberty Leading the People. Because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Romanticism In The Romantic Period And Porphyria's Love The Romantic age is a period where, "for the first time in history, people were able to express themselves and their feelings as they wished rather than as society dictated" (Handout). This period emphasizes humanity's spontaneous actions, passions, and emotions rather than logic or reason. Unlike the Enlightenment era, "the Romantic era essentially replaced the old way of life had been lived with a new style of living life" (Handout). Humanity's focus leaps forward into a new view of creative imagination as a portal to transcendent experiences and spiritual truths. This deepened admiration of all the beauties of nature is widely known as, Romanticism. "Inspired by the work of eighteenth–century Enlightenment thinkers," Robert Browning and Charles Baudelaire's works of "imagination is deepened due to the Industrial and French Revolutions." Although these two poets share a twisted and perverse perspective of love for a woman, they both have very distinctive and dark ways of making their audience cringe. Robert Browning, the man whose mastery of the dramatic monologue made him one of the best Victorian poets, opens his poem "Porphyria's Love" with a thrilling, yet romantic tone that leaves the reader with skeptical question. After Porphyria gets all settled from being outside in the rain storm, she begins to remove her wet clothing. Beginning to transition into modern style, the narrator states; "Which done, she rose, and from her form Withdrew the dripping cloak and shawl, And laid her soiled gloves by, untied Her hat and let the damp hair fall" (Browning 11–13). Porphyria rapidly moves forward and takes her simplistic beauty to a blatantly dangerous level of sexuality as stated; She put my arm about her waist, And made her smooth white shoulder bare, And all her yellow hair displaced, And stooping, made my cheek lie there, And spread, o'er all, her yellow hair" (Browning 14–18). The speaker does not respond verbally or physically up until this point. That is before Porphyria utters her love for him; "Murmuring how she loved me" (Browning 21). Because of her immortal sin of sexual desires, the narrators simple and innocent love evolves into an over the top, obsessive, and twisted passion that is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Eugene O’neill and the the Rebirth of Tragedy a... Eugene Gladstone O'Neill is one of the greatest American playwrights, he is known for plays such as "Long Day's Journey into Night" ,"Beyond the Horizon" (1920), "Anna Christie" (1922), "Strange Interlude" (1928), "Mourning Becomes Electra"(1931)and The Iceman Cometh (1946). His plays probe the American Dream, race relations, class conflicts, sexuality, human aspirations and psychoanalysis. He often became immersed in the modernist movements of his time as he primarily sought to create "modern American drama" that would rival the great works of European modernists such as Ibsen, Strindberg and G.B. Shaw. O'Neill was a great admirer of classical theatre and as a young man he had read Friedrich Nietzsche's work about the origin of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is remarkable how O'Neill contrives to preserve the Chorus, which is a fundamental element of the Greek tragedy. Although it is not as dramatic as the tragic Chorus of the classical Greek plays, each and every of the three parts of "Mourning Becomes Electra" begins with the performance of a chorus formed of different men and women that comment upon the Mannons, the history of their family, revealing to the audience details about the behavior and the character of the heroes. Moreover, the setting chosen by O'Neill is similar to the classical one used by the Greeks. It is known that in Aeschylus' times a wooden wall was used as a background of the setting, the wall usually stood for a palace or a temple and this exactly the same as in O'Neill's trilogy, as the greatest part of the action takes place in front of the Mannon's residence which is described as being an enormous stone mansion that has the aspect of a Greek temple(the temple of god Apollo) "with a white wooden portico, with six tall columns"[2]. However that was the typical construction for a house that belonged to an American aristocratic family in the XIX century. In "Mourning Becomes Electra", O'Neill brought into consonance the fundamental traits of the Greek tragedy and the specific elements of modern theatre, thus creating a ... This was often parodic, therefore linking back to the techniques of absurdist theatre. Linking back to the main topic our audience relationship, it was highly important that our own audience felt self–aware and were critical, not passive to what they observed, producing witnesses rather than spectators, as we found Tim Etchells wanted from his audiences. This was expressed through interaction with the audience or questioning and singling out members, therefore also incorporating the alienation technique from Epic Theatre. • 39. The Ugly American By William J. Deming And Eugene Burdick The Ugly American, published in 1958, by William J. Lederer and Eugene Burdick, depicts the many United States foreign policy errors of the time. Counterinsurgency is a parallel to the novel while the novel depicts the failures of American diplomats during a time in which Communism was succeeding. The diplomats' lack of knowledge and sensitivity to the culture caused the U.S diplomatic corps to fail. Communism was particularly succeeding in Southeast Asia when Vietnam split in two along the 17th parallel. Sarkhan represents Southeast Asia in the novel. The Ugly American soon after being published became a rude awakening for America, but yet the United States could not fathom the idea that one size does not fit all. Counterinsurgency is the act against the activities of guerrilla warfare tactics or revolutionaries by military or political action. In a sense, states are trying to make peace without war. Counterinsurgency came into effect after the end of World War 1. Increasing mechanization is one the main reasons for this. The United States in an attempt to be proactive, as always, adopted a new way in which to possibly defeat insurgents. The outcomes of counterinsurgency have shifted partially because of the collision of World War 1 and industrialization resulting in a new system of military organization. The outcomes of counterinsurgency just like the outcomes of any conflict are a win, draw, or loss. A win constitutes that the insurgents have been defeated. A draw is ... It was a time of uprisings and conflicts, of liberal thought and confrontation–and the winds of change swept away everyone and everything, from monarchies and governments to French farmers and salon owners. A new way of thinking and looking at the world was proposed; the shift revealed itself in the works of new artistic masters who broke out onto the scene, shocking the critics and the public (mostly bourgeois, old masters, and nobles) with their new styles that approached art in a way that challenged all traditions.
