LTE
LTE by 2013: 150 Mbps DLs to Your PMD
Download an entire HD movie in seven minutes
Wireless system to bypass WiFi and WiMax
LTE has been adopted as the 4G technology of choice by every major wireless carrier
in the United States except for Sprint Nextel.
PC World
OLPC 2.0 Prototype for 2010 Debut
Only 9 x 16 inches, draws 1 watt, mesh network enabled
Dual screen touchpad / keyboard / speakers / camera
A prototype of the next version was unveiled last month, and it looks a lot like the
laptop you're going to buy in five years. No, I'm not kidding. Your laptop will look and
function more or less like the XO 2.0. It's a brilliant -- and prescient -- design.

Communication Trends
39% of 18-24 employees would quit if they lost Facebook at work
By 2013: number of hours spent sleeping = watching video / TV
Microsoft’s DMP system may silence your cell phone

3. LTE by 2013: 150 Mbps DLs to Your PMD
• LTE: Long Term Evolution (wireless broadband)
• Data streams for 3rd / 4th generation PMD’s (video, audio, TV, motion pictures)
• ~2010 rollouts by China Mobile, Vodafone, Verizon Wireless, Japan’s NTT
• ~2013 LTE share: Asia-12 million, Europe-12 million, North America-8 million
• China may skip 3G network, and go direct to 4th generation LTE network
• NXP June 2008 tests: 150 Mbps downloads and 50 Mbps uploads speeds
Another piece in LTE wireless deployment fell into place Thursday [June 12, 2008] as NXP Semiconductors unveiled a high-
bandwidth cellular soft modem capable of achieving screaming data transfer speeds of 150 Mbits on the downlink and 50 Mbits
on the uplink.
The modem provides hints of what the 3G-based LTE future holds for consumers. NXP said
the device can download an entire HD feature movie in less than 7 minutes, which is more
than 20 times faster than download speeds of today's standard solutions

4. OLPC 2.0 Prototype for 2010 Debut
• 1 watt power consumption
• Price of US$75 to large educational buyers
• Dual 16x9 proportioned sunlight-readable touch screens
• Keyboard and touchpad both replaced by touch screens
• OS: Sugar and possibly XP
1. Tablet mode. By opening the clamshell all the way, the two screens snap together in
the middle to form one semi continuous touch screen.
2. Laptop mode. By laying the bottom flat and setting the top half at an angle, the
bottom becomes the keyboard and touchpad, and the top functions as the screen, just
like a conventional laptop, but the keyboard is on-screen and virtual.
3. Book mode. When you the hold up the XO 2.0 like a book, the text can be displayed
on two quot;pages, quot; which can be quot;turnedquot; virtually.
4. Two-person mode. By setting the laptop open and flat like quot;tablet mode, quot; but pressing
an on-screen button, one screen orients up and the other down. If you set it on a table
between two people, they both get their own properly oriented touch screen, which is
great for games or any other two-person usage applications.
- imagine if your learning machine was an un-interrupted screen one could
interface with from any direction
- imagine if it was a reading experience just like a book, and at the same time a
seamless large visual tablet
- imagine if children could play board games sitting across from each other (or
computer games). One Laptop per Child designer Yves Behar

5. Communication Trends for Discussion
39% of US employees (age 18-24) would quit their jobs if Facebook
was banned from their workplace; another 16% would be annoyed.
[The survey] points up the frequent disconnect between the expectations of younger workers and their older employers.

By 2013, time spent sleeping and time spent watching video or
television will be equal for a total of 16 out of 24 hours daily.
… while daily time with TV will remain close to 4 hours, traditional TV’s share of the total video entertainment pie is
projected to shrink from 63.9% today to 47.1% by 2013, given the overall increase consumers’ in total video-based
entertainment consumption.

Microsoft files patent for “device manners policy” (DMP) system to
silence, block or turn off cell phones and cameras in restricted areas.
Such policy may be used to communicate to various mobile and other devices the “manners” with which compliance
is expected or required. Similar to some of the social manners honored among people, such as with “no smoking” or
“employees only” zones, “no swimming” or “no flash photography” areas, and scenarios for “please wash your
hands” or “no talking out loud”, devices may recognize and comply with analogous “device manners” policy.
