2. As part of the "Getting Acquainted with a
Monument of My Region" activity, we chose to
visit and learn about the Doric Fountain.
The Doric Fountain is situated on the southern
slope of Mount Filemos and belongs to the
Dorian Temple of Poliada Athena.
On a small plateau, of the almost vertical
rock, it is made of porous stone in the form of
a stoa consisting of a closed tank and a second
open with six pillars.
3.
4. Upon the Pantheon, the Lion head-shaped
Crowns dipped the water into the portico
floor.
In the third column there is a post-Hellenistic
inscription, with penalties imposed on those
who degraded the sanctity of the Fountain.
Drachmas to the Master(the value of the
penalty written on the inscription is erased)
and to the slave, who carried it, a hundred
slaps from the Priest of the Temple. The
Drachmas would go to the Temple of Poliada
Athena.

6. In our country there is no traditional
settlement and village without one or more
public fountains, built from the very old
years, as they provided the most important
commodity to all the inhabitants, if there
was no water supply network.
7. Since the end of the 8th century BC the
public fountain has taken its place among the
public utilities in the cities. The citadels
(acropolis) of all the Greek cities had
facilities in the form of tunnels that led to
water springs.
8. Initially, there was only one modulated
outflow from where water flowed directly
onto the source. Later the fountains began to
be organized systematically and decorated
with architectural designs.
9.
10. Such a fountain exists on Filerimos hill, an area
very close to our school and almost visible from
the windows of the children's classrooms.
11.
12. The Doric Fountain Monument is an
archaeological monument of the 4th century,
of exceptional beauty that invites us to reflect
on our relationship with our cultural heritage.
13. Prior to our visit to the monument, Nikos
Christodoulides, archaeologist, talked to the
students, showed them pictures of the fountain,
explained the way of its construction/operation
in antiquity and answered their questions.
14.
15. The children, accompanied by their teachers,
were transported by bus to Filerimos hill and
from there descended to the location of the
Doric Fountain.
16.
17. Arriving there, Mr. Christodoulides showed
them everything he had told them at the
previous meeting.
18.
19. Then the children took pictures of the
monument and drew it.
