It is thought that the traditional costume of Madeira has influences from the Minho, Moorish, African and Flanders.
Its diversity occurs at the level of the Female Costume, possessing dozens of variations, whereas the Male Costume differs only in
two ways.
Female
In the Female Costume the color red predominates. At the tip of the sun,
the women wore coats (the married wore and the color red, the blue
widows).
In Funchal, Machico and Santa Cruz there was a definite garment: the skirt
was of wool, colored or lined; a red vest and bodice and a blue hood. At
Ribeira Brava the women wore black skirts with red or black and yellow
lists, a white blouse with lace and a red scarf. On Sundays, they wore skirts
and cloaks of blue baize.
Clothing changed according to marital status. The married woman wore
black skirt and cape, with red lists and a colorful apron.
The Male Costume did not have great evolutions. They wore white shirred
shorts on the knee (with elastic or waistband); the shirt had pleats and could
be embroidered or not.
The men who lived in the Sierras wore their chestalls and brown trousers and a
sheepskin cap. On Mass days, trousers, waistcoat or black coat.
Both men and women wore boots, called botachas or boot-trousers and were made of tanned cow skin. The top of the boot
was turned outward and down to the ankle, being trimmed with a red ribbon.
