VILLAGE WITH MANY THINGS
TO DO AND SEE
5.
6. THE SCHOOL IS A VERY
INTERESTING BUILDING
The school was built between 1929-32 and it
was closed between 2010-11 because there
weren’t enough students. It has 5
classrooms and the biggest yard in Lemnos.
7. THE VILLAGE HAS ALSO GOT MANY
CHURCHES. SOME OF THEM ARE:
The church of Our Lady (Panagia in Greek) which is
the biggest in Panagia. It was built in 1972. It has a big
square, it also has sanctuary.
16. THE OLD STONE MADE TROUGHS
In the first trough they were washing the clothes
In the second they were rubbing the clothes
In the third they were wringing them
17. THE <<MAGIC DOOR>>
In the past the children were shoving the door
and they were going in.
18. I WANT TO SAY ABOUT
SOMETHING VERY NICE AND
ENTERTAINING
We have a very-very big and nice square!!
19. where in February we celebrate carnival.
A great parade take place and all the
residents paint their faces and wear
colourful masks.
21. In Lemnos there are three lakes. The lake which is near to
our village is called Aliki. In the summer all the residents
of the village go to Aliki lake to take salt.
There you can watch a lot of birds!
32. The Kavirio Sanctuary
The sanctuary was built at the north part of Lemnos on the cape
Chloe, opposite the port of ancient town Hephaestia. The sanctuary
was dedicated to the worship of Kaviri, the children of god
Hephaestus and his wife Kaveiro. It was destroyed in the 3th-4th
century A.D.
33. Porphyria, the annual and the most important religious feast was lasting
nine days. During this glorious feast they revived the discovery of fire
and celebrated the revival of nature and fertility of land. These
celebrations and ceremonies are named Kaviria Mysteries.
Kaviri were considered daemons of sea, fire and metallurgy.
The earthquake and the fire were attributed to Kaviri.
34. Philoctetes’ cave
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philoctetes_(Sophocles)#The_Philoctetes_Project
According to the Greek
mythology Philoctetes from
Thessaly was one of the
heroes and the master archer
of the Trojan war because the
demigod Hercules had given
him his bow and poisoned
arrows in return for his help.
Philoctetes lived for ten years
at this underwater cave when
he was abandoned by his
companions, after their rest in
Lemnos on their road to Troy,
because he had been bitten by
a poisonous snake and he was
very seriously wounded.
His story is the main theme of
the ancient tragedy
“Philoctetes” of the tragic
playwright Sophocles.
is located at the coast under the hill of the archaeological site of Kavirio
sanctuary.
35. The ancient town Hephaestia
was once a capital city in Lemnos. Today only its ruins remained. It was named
in the honour of Hephaestus, Greek god of fire and metallurgy.
The amphitheatre of Hephaestia dates from the late of 5th century BC.
Its reconstruction finished in 2004.
Since 2010 hosts performances of ancient Greek drama and cultural events.
36. But the most exciting and beautiful
in Panagia is the spectacular
