Most things in life are not guaranteed. However, a few things are like taxes and cafeteria food being
of low quality. Students at Oberlin are complaining about the school's cafeteria food is racist and

the best option someone may have. For example, if someone ask if they are overweight, it is
common to say no even if they are overweight. In this story, lying is not an option anymore as every
time someone lies, it rains on them. Matt is from a traditional Chinese–American family and he
happens to be hiding from his family that he is gay. Since lying is no longer possible, Matt will have
to come out to his family and either by accepted or disowned. In the short story, The Water That
Falls on You From Nowhere, the water represents the lies that people hold inside them and it tries to
show that lying can just pour out of someone if you keep it in for too long. Matt has been holding in
a large secret for a long time. He is gay and has a boyfriend named Gus. Matt comes from a
traditional–Chinese family and his boyfriend is white. When Matt is invited for Christmas dinner at

fortune, people's taste and social status in China. "The consumption of luxury seafood in
contemporary China is intertwined with broader historical trends" (Fabinyi 2012:83). Shark fin
apparently has become a much popular and common luxury dish consumed at banquets in China
today (Fabinyi 2012:88). However, as the Chinese economy growth over the last two decades, the
consumption rates of shark fin are increasing (Fabinyi and Liu 2014:218). The cruel slaughter by
fishermen has imperiled the populations of sharks and violated the rights of animal (Spiegel
2001:409). Many countries have advocated a ban on shark finning (Spiegel 2001:424). Therefore,
this paper will describe how shark fin culture is interconnected with consumers and business, and
how shark fin culture is impacted under the controversy between conservation and prohibition of the
Chinese shark fin business.

There is an inseparable relationship between food, culture and business. Seafood is closely related to
southern Chinese cuisine, in particular Cantonese cuisine, which is regarded as one of the "great
culinary traditions of China" and mainly found in Hong Kong and Guangzhou (Fabinyi and Liu
2014:224).

Chinese–American daughters. In the narrative "Fish Cheeks", Amy Tan shares a story of young love
which reveals the conflict of shame and pride that she felt about her Chinese heritage.
The narrative begins by telling how a young Chinese girl has a crush on the minister's son, Robert
who is American. When the daughter finds out her parents have invited the minister and his family
over to eat, she starts to panic. All she could think was, "What would Robert think of our shabby
Chinese Christmas? What would he think of our noisy Chinese relatives who lacked proper
American manners? What terrible disappointment would he feel upon seeing not a roasted turkey
and sweet potatoes but Chinese food?" Here is where Amy Tan first hints at the shame she has about

a vivid image of the special meal her mother has prepared. For example she describes the fish as "a
slimy rock cod with bulging eyes", and she makes the fish seem almost human as it "pleads" not to
be dropped into the hot oil. Tan uses a simile to describe the tofu. "Tofu, which looked like stacked
wedges of rubbery white sponges." Tan compares the markings on the squid to a bicycle tire, so that

When visiting China one should know and understand the rules of dining
and table etiquette. In China, people tend to eat with each other. The host of

host. When using chopsticks never tap or drum them on a dish this to is
also considered to be disrespectful to the host or the chef. Also, one should

permissible in a dim sum restaurant or when notifying a waiter that your
