Civics and Economics Vocabulary

                 Chapter 1 - Section One
                 Civics- the study of rights and duties of citizens
                 Similarity: Economics goes hand in hand with Civics
                 Sentence: Those who are interested in citizen rights should check out civics.

                 Citizenship- people becoming citizens
                 Similarity: Naturalization
                 Sentence: Before Jose could become an american citizen, he had to apply for
                 citizenship.

                 Service Economy- Making a living by offering services rather than goods
                 Difference: Manufacturing goods
                 Sentence: Rather than fueling an economy solely on goods, service economy also
                 contributes.

                 Values- general principles, or beliefs, you use to make judgments
                 Similarity: morals, culture/tradition, how you were brought up
                 Sentence: People tend to make decisions based on their personal values.

                 Popular Sovereignty- government by consent of the governed
                 Similarity: Majority Rules
                 Sentence: The government run by popular sovereignty so what ever the majority of
                 people want is what will happen.

                 Institutions- sets of ideas that people have about relationships, obligations, roles, and
                 functions
                 Similarity: somewhat similar to values
                 Sentence: Each culture has a unique set of institutions.

                 Chapter 1 - Section Two
                 Naturalization- a legal process for foreign-born people to become citizens
                 Similarity: citizenship
                 Sentence: Since Paco wasnʼt born in the United States he had to go through
                 naturalization to go through the citizenship process.

                 Aliens- people that are not citizens yet living in the country
                 Difference: Immigrants
                 Sentence: Many aliens come to the United States to study one a visa but since they are
                 not citizens they must leave when their visa runs out.

                 Immigrants- People who become permanent citizens in a country
                 Similarity: Citizens, Citizenship
                 Sentence: Our ancestors came to America as immigrants to build a new life.

Deport- to send aliens back to their country
                 Difference: Immigrants and citizens
                 Sentence: When Paco let his visa run out while remaining in America he was deported.

                 Chapter 1 - Section Three
                 Government- the ruling authority for a community or society
                 Similarity: Structure system
                 Sentence: The government regulates most things to ensure society is running smoothly.

                 Public Policy- a course of government action to achieve community goals
                 Similarity: popular sovereignty
                 Sentence: A majority of people were wanting more funding for things such as parks and
                 recreation centers rather than the large budget for roads so eventually public policy had
                 funding shifted around.

                 Budget- a plan for collecting and spending money
                 Difference: Random Spending
                 Sentence: Before spending money on leisure items you need to consult your budget to
                 make sure you have enough money to cover bills.

                 Democracy- government system where “majority rules” through elections
                 Difference: Dictatorship
                 Sentence: Rather than one person making the decisions regardless of the people,
                 Harold lived i a democracy.

                 Direct Democracy- all citizens met to debate government matters
                 Similarity: Democracy
                 Sentence: In small communities direct democracy would work but itʼs no longer practical
                 today.

                 Representative Democracy- citizens choose a small group to represent them, make
                 laws, and govern on their behalf.
                 Similarity: Republic
                 Sentence: The citizens of the Representative Democracy voted today for the
                 representatives to govern on their behalf.

                 Republic- a system of limited government in which the people are the ultimate source of
                 governmental power
                 Similarity: Representative Democracy
                 Sentence: In the Republic, people didnʼt have to worry about dictatorships when
                 everyone fought for a say.

                 Monarchy- government with a hierarchy ruler
                 Difference: Democracy

Sentence: Prince William will eventually take over Englandʼs Monarchy.

                 Majority Rule- citizens agree that when differences of opinion arise they will abide by
                 what most people want while still respecting the rights of those in the minority
                 Similarity: Democracy
                 Sentence: In Mr Calderoneʼs classroom we often abide by a majority rule when deciding
                 to take the benchmark on Monday instead. However, those who wanted to take the test
                 on Friday still could.

                 Authoritarian- power is held by an individual or a group not accountable to the people
                 Similarity: Dictatorship
                 Sentence: What the people wanted made no difference because they lived in an
                 Authoritarian government.

                 Totalitarian- the governmentʼs control extends to almost all aspects of peopleʼs lives
                 Similarity: Dictatorship
                 Sentence: Hitler enforced a totalitarian government style in his dictatorship.
