The Importance Of Western Imperialism In East Asia
Eastern Superiority The most populated region in the world, number one in global manufacturing,
East Asia is very prosperous. The prosperity comes from a long line of success in India and in
China. Governments of both areas has been defending itself from western invaders. Some argue that
east asia did not resist western imperialism;however others say East Asia was very effective at
resisting western imperialism because the geography made the area hard to conquer. Furthermore for
span of 3,000 years Easter Asia has prevented the western onslaught due to their advanced
government. East Asia was mainly ruled through dynasties which had successfully driven away
conquering armies, which caused proved successful in preventing western imperialism. From
beginning of the chinese dynasties (Shang–Qing) and the empires of India the governments of East
Asia stressed the upkeep and strength of their armies. The Shang Dynasty was the first of many
dynasties, they controlled Eastern Asia from "1766 to around 1122 BCE"(Marsh). The shang ruled
over a small piece of land and prevent invasions from the north. The government was a king with a
close knit aristocracy, which lead to fast and efficient orders to be carried out. During the time of the
shang Dynasty Mesopotamia and Egypt were just developing, so there were no real threats and
empires were starting to form. The biggest issue that the Shang had were some small barbaric tribes
and their successors the Zhou dynasty. The Zhou dynasty

Origin Of Pug Colors
Pugs originated in 400 B.C in China. In China at around 700 B.C these dogs were only bred and
owned by the emperors. It is believed that there was an ancient Chinese law that prevented anyone
other than an emperor to own the breed. A person could only own a pug if it were a gift from an
emperor, illegal ownership of a pug was punishable by death. The name "pug" came about when
some people found a similarity between the pug's facial expression to that of a marmoset monkey
called Pug in the 1700's. This breed is commonly seen in fawn or black color, but, the origin of the
black and silver pug colors is not known. It is suspected that the black color was considered a birth
defect, therefore many of those unfortunate pugs were put to death at

Tarracotta Warrior Research Paper
The Terracotta warriors found, March 29 1974, was one of the most astounding historic finds of the
last century. Although, the statues were buried at the base of the mountain, the Emperor was buried
near the peak. 8000 soldiers and counting, over 500 horses, 150 chariot horses found inside the
mausoleum. This astonishing masterpiece is 40 years of excruciating work of approximately
700'000 workers.
Farmers making wells, in Lintong, Xi'an, Shaanxi, China stumbled upon the statues March 29, 1974.
The statues are a funerary art buried with the first Emperor of the Qin Dynasty, Qin Shi Huang Di,

Urban of Ancient Chine: Xi'an City
1. Physical Geography and History of Development
The name of Xi'an city reflects its relative location in China. Literally, Xi'an means "peace in the
west" in Chinese and it located in the central west part of China in the Wei River valley with Qinling
Mountains in the South and Loess Plateau in the North. The Wei River has its source in the
mountainous area in Western China and flows eastward into the Yellow River. The Wei River valley
was largely formed by the deposition of loess that washed off the plateau to the north (G. Brent Hall
and Ji Dong Zhang, 116). The climate in this area is temperate and humid. The spring and early
summer are the dry time and most of the precipitation is between May and ... Show more content on

The degradation of environment, the eastward movement of political center and the emergence of
marine trade collectively caused the final demise of Xi'an.
2. City Structure and Architecture
All traditional Chinese cities were surrounded by city walls. These clay and brick–built city walls
can provide security for the residents within during foreign invasions and indigenous rebellions. The
city wall is about forty feet high, forty–three feet wide on top and fifty feet wide at bottom. Three
gates were opened on each of the four walls. The gates in the east, south and west walls provided
access to city interior, while those in the north led to the imperial parks and palace. These gates were
highly fortified. Each of the nine gates in the east, south and west walls were assigned with a three–
tower defense system: an arrow tower in the front, a fort tower in the middle and a brake tower in
the back. The space between the arrow tower and the normal tower is called barbican, which can
prevent the soldiers who broke through the first tower from attacking the second one. Gates were
shut and locked at dusk when the curfew began and only those who with a permission issued by the
court were allowed to enter or leave the city during the night. Outside each gate was a drawbridge
over the moat which was

The legend of the First Emperor Qin Shi Huang brought about a combination of traditional
narratives with China's historical texts containing a mixture of myths and other folklore. The past
century upon discovering the Emperor's resting grounds, the historically embed view (ideology) of
the First Emperor has been pushed and pulled in numerous directions; the tangible evidence of the
Qin Shi Huang's empire and its ruler have significantly shaped public perception of the emperor's

The archeological diggers revealed a close approximate of 200 coexisting pits containing thousands
of life size terra cotta soldiers, terra cotta horses and bronze chariots and weapons. Scientists,
archeologist and historians calls this "a world renowned discovery", together with burial tombs and
architectural remains with a staggering comprehensive number of over 600 sculptures and other
treasures within the mausoleum of the property area of 56.25 square kilometers. The Terracotta
Army or the "Terracotta Warriors and Horses" is an assembled collection of terracotta sculptures
depicting the armies of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. The small figures are
all different and unique; with their horses, chariots and weapons, they are masterpieces of realism. It
is a form of funerary art buried with the emperor in 210–209 BCE with the Emperor's sole purpose
as to protect him in the afterlife. The layout of the mausoleum is constructed on the Qin capital
Xianyang, divided upon the central and outer lying cities. The circumference of the central city is
2.5 kilometer and the outer cities ranging to 6.3 kilometer. The tomb is located in the southwest of
the central city and faces the raising east sun. The main tomb chamber housing the coffin and burial
artifacts is the core of the architectural compartment of the mausoleum. According to the historian
Sima Qian (c. 145–95 BCE), workers from every province of the Empire exerted extensive amount

Who were the Terracotta Warriors?
"The Terracotta Warriors are considered an 8th wonder of the world." They were created over 2000
years ago to protect Qin Shi Huangdi in the afterlife. Some people believe that the warriors were for
protection, others believed that they were a curse and new research has caused argument that they
were for military training. "The Terracotta Army was traditionally believed to have been the
guardians of the first emperor of a unified China, but research has claimed that they could have been
military training models," Sun Jiachun, a researcher of the army. The Terracotta Warriors were an

From an ancient unknown writer, we have learnt that the labourers made the tomb of bronze, with its
floor being a map of China and rivers of mercury, which, as long as they flowed, Qin would live
forever in his underground world. The workers continued construction on the tomb until the
emperor's death in 209BC. The mound was a scale model of the palace, the empire and the world.
The labourers installed automatically triggered weapons in the mausoleum to safeguard the treasures
and ward off tomb robbers. Most of the workmen who were working on the tomb when the Emperor
died were buried alive with Qin to serve him in the afterlife. The warriors were constructed by the
700, 000 employed workers of Qin Shi Huangdi to prepare him for his afterlife journey.
Historians believe that the terracotta army was built for the protection of the first emperor while
some people are lead to believe that they are a curse, however recent development has lead to
researchers believing that the warriors were built for military training purposes. Qin Shi Huangdi's
Terracotta Army was built in the emperor's desire for immortality. The Emperor devoted time and
resources into discovering the secret to immortality. He found various herbs and visited sacred

Islam : The Culture Of Islam And Islam Culture
If Islam was sent to all mankind, then logically, it can only be inferred that it does not deem one
culture superior to another. That being said, the spread of Islam was the spread of religion, not
culture. Islam is often conflated with Arab culture, and vice versa. However, this perception of Islam
as a whole is entirely untrue, as Islam is not a religion specifically for the Arabs, but for all
humanity. Arabic might be the language of Islam, but there is no culture for Islam. But because of
this misconception, most people assume something is Islamic simply because it looks Arabic.
Although most have a mental image of what we deem "Islamic" architecture to be, there is in fact no
style of Islamic architecture, as Islam did not force any culture onto the people it reached.
The designs of Islamic buildings were usually influenced by the culture of the societies the religion
reached, and the only similarities these building have with each other are their practical aspects.
When Islam came to Constantinople, it co–opted an existing church known as the Hagia Sophia,
which today is known as an icon of mosque architecture. On the other hand, when Muslims during
the Ming dynasty built a mosque, they used typical aspects of Chinese architecture. These examples
demonstrate that Islam is independent of culture, including cultural architecture styles. The only
architectural aspects these two share are practical, such as an empty space for prayer and a place to
make wudu'. These

China–Germany alliance has helped keep the glow on warriors' cheeks. Ma Lie reports from Xi'an.
The earth in the ancient city of Xi'an continues to astound archaeologists. When excavation work to
find more terracotta relics restarted for the third time last year in Xi'an, archaeologists admitted they
did not expect to make any groundbreaking discoveries. Researchers suggested that the No 1 pit, the
largest of the three that surround the tomb of China's first emperor Qin Shihuang (259–210 BC),
was in a worse condition than the other two and not likely to offer rich pickings. However, the
experts were more than happy to be proven wrong. Along with the more than 114 broken figures

"It was a pleasant surprise," said Xu Weihong, who is leading the excavation of the 200–square–
meter–site, at the Museum of the Terracotta Warriors and Horses of Qin Shihuang in Shaanxi
province. "We found some painted in pink, red, white and lilac." The colors better highlight the
expression on the figures' faces and could prove invaluable to the study of ancient China. And
thanks to new technology developed in cooperation with a German institute, technicians on the
scene were able to preserve the relics in their original painted colors – something that was
unthinkable during the previous two digs. The first, which lasted from 1978 until 1984, resulted in
the discovery of 1,087 clay relics. However, after being exposed to air, they all quickly lost their
color and turned an oxidized gray. (A second dig started in 1985 but halted a year later due to
technical reasons.) "When the excavation started, mold caused by moisture began to spread in the
pits," said Wu Yongqi, director of the terracotta museum, which was officially opened on Oct 1,
1979. "When we wiped the mold off the surface dried

Compare And Contrast Tang Dynasty And Empires
Different Dynasty and empires
The Silk Road in the Han Dynasty
Initially, the silk was traded within the empire, from the interior to the western borders. The small
Central Asian Tribes often attacked caravans which made the Han Government to take safety
measures for trade by sending General Zhang Qian (200–114 BC) as a representative to build a
strong bond with these nomadic states.
The trade relations were build up with these small but important kingdoms of Chang'an (Xi'an), the
Western Han Dynasty's capital (206 BC–220 AD) and with Zhang reaching Loulan, Qiuzi, and
Yutian.

Later on, the Tuque Tribe was captured by The Tang Dynasty, the route was revived, and further

During this period, the Silk Road was travelled by a famous Chinese monk Xuanzang (602–664),
who began his journey from Chang'an (today's Xi'an), covering the area west of Yellow River– the
Hexi Corridor, Hami (Xinjiang Region), and Turpan (Xinjiang Region) and continued westward to
India.
The Silk Road in the Yuan Dynasty
During the Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368) Silk Road revived its trade to a summit, when China became
largely reliant on its silk trade. Genghis Khan occupied all the minor states, amalgamated China, and
erected a huge empire under his law.
Marco Polo (1254–1324) visited Dadu (now Beijing), the capital of Yuan while roaming along the
Silk Road. He wrote a book regarding the Orient in which he stated about a special passport (in a
form of a board) which was issued by the Yuan Government to the merchants in a view to save their

Introduction:
Archaeology has allowed society to gain a vast understanding of past cultures and behaviours over
thousands of years ago. Scientific research has allowed us to widen our knowledge on humans and
their past interaction. Through the excavation of the Terracotta army, many insightful secrets have
been uncovered. Buried in a large mausoleum over 2200 years ago, the site reveals past hints of
cultures and beliefs during the ancient civilisation of China, although techniques need to be
implemented to better preserve one of the rarest ancient treasures and evidence that remains. The
Terracotta warriors are an army of clay built by the ancient emperor Quin Shi–Huang. When
excavating the site many significant items have been found that have provided scientists with lots of
research. Many problems have been evidently found while excavating and a few controversies have
been sparked.

1. What exactly is an ecological footprint? Do you think this is a useful measure for understand and
evaluating your impact on the natural environment? Why or why not?
Ecological footprint is the capacity to continue providing resources or consumption of waste, the
biological productivity of the regional space. It means maintaining a person, region, and the country
needs to be able to accommodate human discharge of waste, with biological productivity of the
geographical area, which needs to evaluate to carry a population of a certain quality of life, how
much renewable resources are available for human use, or an ecosystem capacity of absorbing
waste. In my mind, I think this is relatively somewhat useful. Because the calculation of ecological
footprint could only reflect the impact of economic decision on the environment, that

China's Terra-Cotta Army
In March of 1974, while drilling a well, a work brigade of farmers discovered a subterranean
chamber nearby the royal tomb of Qin Shi Huangdi, the first Emperor of China (Encyclopedia
Britannica). The superstitious old women of the village believed that the digging would disturb the
Earth God. Therefore, due to these spiritual beliefs, they did not report the discovery right away.
Eventually, archeologists came to Xi'an in droves to study and extend the digs. This led to the
uncovering of three vast pits to the east of the burial tomb. In these pits, chariots, weapons and over
7,000 terracotta soldiers and horses were unearthed (Roberts p. 25). After extensive research,

The figures are assembled into a well–organized battle array composed of the infantry and cavalry.
The vanguard bowmen include 210 foot soldiers divided equally into three lines. The cavalry and
war chariot follow close in line, forming the main body of the battle formation. The foot soldiers are
alternated with the chariots drawn by horses, lined into 38 columns. On both the northern and
southern sides of the war formation stand 180 warriors which serve as flank guards. The rear guards
are on the western end, with two lines facing east and another facing west. Some soldiers are armed
with battle robe, and some are equipped with armor. The war formation is elaborately set in a line

most spectacular of the three. The combat formations are more complex, and the units of armed
soldiers are more complete. There are over 80 war chariots, about 1,300 terracotta warriors and

Eastern Culture And Western Culture
Eastern culture and Chinese culture are unique in many ways. Many ideas and customs in the
eastern world account for it's unique qualities. One country in the east that is an exceptional
representation of eastern culture is China. China's geography, prehistory, role of women,
philosophies, and culture, are factors that separate China from the rest of the world and shape China
into the unique country it is today. Many components account for the uniqueness of eastern culture.
Eastern people are more likely to hide their feelings. Many times they will keep a straight face or act
happy, when they are actually going through troublesome times. Eastern people are more private
about their relationships. They keep their intimate relations behind doors. Countries in the east
glorify collectivism. The idea of collectivism views the group as the primary body. This means that
the individual is given little worth. Decisions are made as a group and very rarely is a person asked,
"What would you like to do?" Family is the central institution in eastern society and is imperative to
their way of life. When a child's parent grows into old age, they are expected to care and provide
space for them to live in their house. Because grandparents commonly live in the same house as
their grandchildren, they are often involved in the raising of the children and are highly respected
among the children. They are considered the leader of the household and children are expected to

Christian Religion
The Christianity of the Byzantine Empire under, and after, the rule of Justinian I during the early 6th
century was the sole public religion of the Roman world. He built the Hagia Sophia, the Church of
Holy Wisdom, which became the symbol of Constantinople's position as the center of the orthodox
Christian world. This imperialistic religion stands in stark contrast to the Christianity that first came
to the Horn of Africa, Central Asia, China, and Northern Ireland nearly two centuries earlier. I will
show that the Christianity that found itself in these places was a transformative religion that could
adapted to the cultures it encountered. Christianity arrived in Axum (Ethiopia) around 330CE with

Christianity grew with the Armenian alphabet. Thus the accounts of Christian saints and kings
echoed the preliterate world's epic oral tales. This shows that Christianity adapted heroic
foundational myths from the Armenian culture. Christianity arrived with Alopen, via the Silk Road,
in China in 635. Alopen's teaching and writings were released in a 638CE decree by T'ang emperor
T'ai–tsung. Assuming that Alopen was the author of the Jesus–Messiah Sutra, then Alopen's
Christianity infused the story of Jesus with T'ang Destiny culture. This same type of infusion can be
seen in the image of the cross with the lotus flower on the stele found in Xi'an, China. In Ireland
Christianity arrived by way of a slave raid around 440. Patricius was a missionary to Ireland. In the
narratives of his mission, "We meet no violent persecution by the heathen... no spectacular
destruction of pagan temples." Rather we see Patricius as a "trickster god," unlike the imperial
destroyer of the Byzantine Empire. We have seen that Christianity was adaptable to other cultures.

The Army Of The Undead Essay
The Army of the Undead
In 1974 Chinese farmers in Lintong District, Xi 'an, of the Shaanxi province were digging for a well
when they unearthed fragments of clay figures and made one of the most important discoveries in
art history to date. Archaeologists were notified of the discovery and they began excavating the area
for more clues as to what was buried. The clay army of China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, was
found buried in pits near the emperor's underground tomb, over 8,000 warriors dated to
approximately the late third century BCE. The massive life sized army was once in full color and
complete with weapons such as swords and bows. Researchers have studied the various techniques
and new technology that was introduced to create the fine detail and unique features of each figure.
Art historians have speculated possible influences from other cultures such as Greek and Hellenistic
that helped shape the style of the figures. The terracotta warriors have been excavated from four
main pits, other clay figures including chariots, horses, and performers have been discovered around
the emperor's tomb. The clay army is a part of a much larger necropolis consisting of several halls,
stables, and an imperial park around the tomb mound. Qin Shi Huang's tomb hasn't been excavated
out of fear of destroying artifacts buried within by exposing them.
The discovery of the Terracotta army at first seemed to strengthen the idea of Chinas first emperor

My family and I decided to go on a trip to China for this winter break. The flight is extremely long,
about 20 hours and you have to stop on the way. We landed in Xi'an, China and went straight to the

we figured that Xi'an was the best place to go since it was the capitol. On our first day we met our
tour guide who was knew all about the Han Dynasty and could speak english, which was good
because no one in my family can speak Chinese. As we walked around he told us all about what it
looked like during the Han Dynasty. He told us where the Buddha statues were and still are and
explained the big effect Buddhism had on the Chinese. As we were walking I realized how
mountainous it is and I was thinking about how hard it must have been when they had to walk
everywhere. The tour guide explained to us that Xi'an is surrounded by rivers which led to much

Chin China 's History
China
China's history dates back to four thousand plus years. In that time, China has created a culture rich
in philosophy and the arts. China has made amazing technological advances such as silk, paper,
gunpowder, and many other products. Chinese records reach over five thousand years back. It is
difficult to cover even the most important events of this old society in a short space, yet here are
some highlights. The first dynasty to rule China was the Shang Dynasty (1600–1046 BCE),
followed by the Xia dynasty (2200–1700 BCE), established by Emperor Yu, and after that the Zhou
Dynasty (1122–256 BCE). Historical records are hard to find for these times in the world in which
China had these dynasties. In 221 BCE, Qin Shi Huangdi took the throne, destroying neighboring
city–states, and binding China together as its own. He established the Qin Dynasty, which kept
going until 206 BCE. Today, he is best–known for his complex tomb in Xian (in the past Chang 'an),
which houses the fantastic armed force of the terracotta warriors. Qin Shi Huang 's awkward term
was toppled by the armed force of normal man Liu Bang in 207 BCE. Liu then established the Han
Dynasty, which kept going until 220 BCE. In the Han period, China extended west all the way to
India, opening an exchange of goods along what might later turn into the Silk Road. At the point
when the Han Empire broke down in 220 CE, China was tossed into a time of political worry and
confusion. For the following four centuries, many

Terracotta Warriors Research Paper
The Terracotta Warriors are thousands of individual hand–crafted terracotta soldiers and horses.
They are lined up in rows, placed underground near China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang's tomb.
The Warriors were made to accompany Qin Shi Huang in the afterlife, as he believed that they could
be animated. The Terracotta warriors are very significant to the Chinese culture as they show in
great detail, how the military was back then and the amazing craftsmanship of the ancient Chinese.
The Terracotta army was built in around 210 BCE and there are an estimated 8000 warriors, chariots
and horses, all suposedly serving Qin Shi Huang in his afterlife. The warriors were built to
acompony him so he could keep the same military power and imperial status, as he believed that the
statues would become animated after he died. He ordered the project to start at an early age of 13,
even with an estimated 700,000 workers the warriors and tomb took around 40 years to build. He
believed that they would be a safeguard and serve him to his every need. The warriors were a

The Mausoleum Of Emperor Qin Shihuangdi
The mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shihuangdi is one of the world's most precious cultural treasures
and its discovery was China's most spectacular archaeological achievement of the 20th century.
Good morning everyone, I am Zara Frost, curator of the Museum of Warrior and Horse figures from
the tomb of Qin Shihuangdi. Today, I will be personally giving you a tour of the museum and
proving to you that funerary evidence reveals that Emperor Qin Shihuangdi had absolute power and
control over the people in his dynasty, forcing them to build him an extravagant tomb filled with
terracotta warriors to guide him in the afterlife. During the tour, I will be talking about Qin
Shihuangdi and how he controlled his dynasty, then I will talk about the terracotta warriors, how
they were discovered, made and giving you an insight into their physical characteristics, and lastly,
what other items were buried in the tomb with the warriors. Firstly, the first emperor of all of China
was named Ying Zheng. He was born in 260BC during a dangerous period of Chinese History. He
ascended the throne in 247BC when he was only thirteen years old. In 221 BC, Zheng united all of
what is known now as China and renamed himself Qin Shihuangdi, meaning 'first emperor of Qin'.
According to Will Durant, American writer, historian, and philosopher, by unifying China, Qin
"simplified official ceremonies, issued a state coinage, divided most of the feudal estates and paved

Chinese Farmers Discovered The Terracotta Warrior
In 1974, local Chinese farmers discovered the Terracotta Warrior life sized clay sculptures. The
weather was dry in 1974, and the grain was dying in the fields of Lintong County, Shaanxi Province,
near Xian, China and some local farmers were trying to establish a new water well by digging at a
low point in the terrain. Whilst digging they encountered the first evidence of the Terracotta
Warriors. One of the local farmers Yang Zhifa quoted on the discovery "At first the digging went
well. The second day we hit hard red earth. The third day, my hoe dug out the neck of a terracotta
statue without a head, but the opening at the bottom was about size of a bowl,". It wasn 't until
months later when archaeologists were informed, arrived and realized that the farmers had stumbled
upon an astonishing find in the form of a large–scale Terracotta Warriors dig. They dated the
construction around 246 – 206 BC during the Qin Dynasty. It was during the reign of the first
Emperor of a unified Imperial China – Qin Shi Huang Di. According to Ancient Chinese linguist the
words "Shi Huang" translate as "First Emperor" so this individual was also known as the first
Emperor of the Qin Dynasty. Chinese civilization has its origins in Shaanxi and Henan Provinces
where the Huang He, or Yellow River, winds its way through its fertile valleys with the old Qin
capital city Xian Yang just 40km East of discovery site. Based on these historical and geographical
evidences the Terracotta Warriors could now

How Did China Change After The Tang Dynasty
The China completely changed compared it to before and after the Tang and Song dynasty. In terms
of economy, population and social class, these changes are very important. The transformation didn't
happen overnight but happened in a slow process across two dynasties.
We can separate Tang Period into five–part. Tang (618–690), Later Zhou of Empress Wu (690–705),
Tang restored (705–755), An Lushan Rebellion (755–863) and Late Tang period (763–907). A lot of
people think the glory of China's Tang Dynasty is a cliché. Why is that? Compared with the political
divisions and military unrest in those four centuries, the ruling Li family and loyal officials, at least
for the elite, have created an extraordinary period of stability and prosperity. There are many ways
to tell whether the dynasty was successful or not. The expansion of power in the provinces allowed
the courts in the Tang dynasty to levy sufficient tax revenues with generous cultural support and
material expansion. The patronage of religion, the prosperity of the dynasty has made the Tang
Dynasty a word known brilliant dynasty and created an unexpected prosperity of the Tang Dynasty's
culture.
We have to mention the existence of the man Quan Yude if we want to discuss more Tang dynasty.
Before that, it's also necessary to bring up the discussion of the social structure during that time. In
the first two centuries, the social structure in the Tang dynasty preserved the nobility camp from the
pre–Tang dynasty. Under the

Legalism Vs Confucianism
What is the central problem of the Chinese society in the Zhou (Chou) dynasty as viewed by the
Confucianists, Daoists and Legalists? What do their answers have in common in terms of
government? How widely do their answers differ?
Confucianists, Daoists, and Legalists faced the central problem of finding new guiding values in the
massive economic, social, and political transitional era. In Eastern Zhou dynasty, a strong central
government proved a failure. The weakness of central authority stimulated the society of free
economic, social, and political changes. Though various states each controlled parts of territories,
the technological and economic development was dynamic. This was followed by a growth of
population, more bustling trade, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Li Ssu argued the various flourishing teachings would harm the unified imperial power. As a result,
Li Ssu, a legalist, started a literary inquisition which was called "Burning of the Books." "Unuseful

buried alive. Many other thinkers and students were executed and exiled. This standardization of
thoughts tremendously harmed the precious Chinese traditional philosophies and put an end to the
golden age of the Chinese thought. Although freedom of thought was hardly exalted in the ancient
era, the atrocities at Qin Dynasty was astonishing.
During Qin Dynasty, the people felt heavily burdened because of the use of corvee labor and heavy
taxation. Shi Huang Di frequently collected money from the people and forced a lot of corvee labor

barbarians and the government demanded a large number of corvee labors to build the Great Wall to
prevent invasions. However, these only proved to be mistakes that the disgruntled people sent the

The Impact Of The Tang Dynasty On China
China, one of the world's first civilizations. Today, it is widely known for it's cultural and
technological advances. China has a captivating and rich history. China's rulers–known as
emperors–had a long rein over China. Approximately 2000 years expanding over thirteen dynasties.
Out of those dynasties, the Tang was the most glorious of all. First off, the Tang dynasty had the
greatest impact on China because it greatly influenced in China's peace and prosperity, and was even
referred to as the 'Golden Age'. The silk road was thriving between the east and west, causing the
economy of the empire to improve. "Along with the establishment of the Tang Dynasty (618 – 907)
and a great prosperity in the economy, the Silk Road rose to its peak in history. Before the An
Lushan Rebellion (755–762), this world–famous road experienced its 'Golden Age' of
development," (TravelChinaGuide). The empire of China was peaceful and celebrated; which meant
everyone, peasants and even the emperor, were content and happy.
Another reason that the Tang dynasty was the greatest is its many incredible achievements. Some of
these achievements include the development of medicine and astronomy. One example of medicinal
advancements is the smallpox vaccination that was developed. In addition to the smallpox vaccine,
they also discovered the source of diabetes,"The study of medicine is one of the highest
contributions of Tang Dynasty as it is practiced worldwide. The illustration of using herbs or

Great dynasties in Imperialistic China
Ancient China was always able to flourish as a powerful economic and imperialistic country. Behind
this great amount of early success were great dynasties that played great roles in China's history.
China has always been highly influenced by its great ancient dynasties. These dynasties were able to
establish monetary systems, road and canal systems for trade, and also build great elaborate historic
structures that still stand today. They also influenced different philosophies such as Taoism and
Confucianism. In the long history of China, many great dynasties appear that have helped a lot to

They also built a tomb for the emperor containing giant detailed sculptures of each one of his
soldiers called the Terracotta Army. Even though this dynasty only lasted 15 years, the Qin's hold an
important part in Chinese history and it shows great influence on the later dynasties. The Han
dynasty was another highly successful dynasty in Chinese history it covered over four centuries
from 206 BC–220 AD and it is known as the "Golden Age" in Chinese history. They were
considered this for many reasons; they had the city of Chang'an which was one of the two largest
cities in the ancient world at this time. The dynasty had a large growth in population and
urbanization which allowed for an increase of industry and trade which developed on the Silk Road
routes. This ultimately led to an increase in economic growth. This empire had Liu Bang ruling as
the first emperor but under him they had a bureaucracy so they also implemented a civil service
exam to ensure the best people fit for the job were working in the government and under the
emperor. The Han dynasty's government system was in some way implemented throughout the
imperial history of China. The Hans also improved iron amour and swords by making them stronger

of the great Emperor has not yet been excavated. Archaeologists are currently preoccupied with
many other sites surrounding the tomb. Most of the work going into excavating and preserving the
Terracotta Army to the east of the tomb mound. Thus the Terracotta Warriors were born. As a potter
myself I have always been fascinated with the herculean effort and particularities of the production
of the Terracotta warriors. Each figure is life sized, not made using a mold and utterly unique from
figure to figure. Further more not just any clay would do, because the statue would be so heavy due
to its size the clay itself would have to be uncharacteristically strong as well as dense to stand up on
its own power and also not to explode in the hand bricked kilns used at the time. The clay used to
make these 8,000 life sized figures can only be found in one place which is located only 18
kilometers away from the Terracotta warriors grave. The method used in making the Terracotta

The Tomb Of The First Emperor Of China
Artefacts at a burial site can portray what an ancient culture found important in life and their beliefs
about death. Using evidence from the tomb of the First Emperor of China we can gain insight about
life in China during his reign. Emperor Qin Shi Huang is arguably the greatest leader in Chinese
history. Qin unified China, gave China its name, built large sections of the Great Wall of China,
initiated sweeping reforms, improved roadways (Konstam, 2008, p. 123), produced weapons with
blast furnaces, abolished serfdom, was China's first bonafide emperor and imposed standardisation
of law, language, currency, measurements, trade and writing (Santon, 2010, p. 249). Conversely the
First Emperor ordered all works of literature and philosophy to be burnt (Lindesay & Baofa, 2008,
p. 8), and decreed mass murder, destroying anyone who displeased him (Hunt, 2007, p. 205). Most
importantly however, Qin is renowned for being buried in the world's largest tomb in Xian not far
from the famous terracotta army, which was created to honour and protect him in the afterlife. This
tomb was successfully built to mirror the universe and his empire (White, 2008, p. 337). From his
tomb we learn about the religious beliefs, military ranks, weapons, transportation, art practices,
advanced technologies and overruling power of the Emperor relevant to the Qin Dynasty. Evidence
from the Emperor's tomb is vital in understanding what life in China was really like during his reign.

The Terracotta Warriors Of Emperor Qin Shihaung 's Real Army
The Terracotta Warriors were discovered in Xian, China in 1974 by a group of local farmers. Each
figure demonstrates a high degree of individualism, and when first discovered historians questioned
whether the soldiers were modelled on Emperor Qin Shihuang's actual army. This theory is still
being investigated today, but with archaeological technologies constantly evolving, historians are
analysing the so–called 'Eighth Wonder of the World' and are obtaining evidence to both support and
discount this theory. For now though, the question remains: were the Terracotta Warriors portraits of
Emperor Qin Shihaung's real army? A study, called Imperial Logistics, was undertaken in 2014 by a
group of scholars from the Institute of Archaeology at University College London and
archaeologists from the Emperor Qin Shihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum in Xian, China. The
research team used new technology to allow a more thorough morphometric analysis of the
Terracotta Warriors than had been achieved previously. The technology, a combination of structure–
from–motion and multiview–stereo (SfM–MVS), allowed the research team to create three–
dimensional reconstructions of the ears of thirty terracotta warriors, as seen in Source 1. While the
source only displays twelve ears, it demonstrates the shape and size variations the archaeologists
found. Ears have been regarded as unique to each individual as fingerprints, and therefore Source 1
suggests that the Terracotta Warriors were likely portraits

  • 3. Origin Of Pug Colors Pugs originated in 400 B.C in China. In China at around 700 B.C these dogs were only bred and owned by the emperors. It is believed that there was an ancient Chinese law that prevented anyone other than an emperor to own the breed. A person could only own a pug if it were a gift from an emperor, illegal ownership of a pug was punishable by death. The name "pug" came about when some people found a similarity between the pug's facial expression to that of a marmoset monkey called Pug in the 1700's. This breed is commonly seen in fawn or black color, but, the origin of the black and silver pug colors is not known. The city wall is about forty feet high, forty–three feet wide on top and fifty feet wide at bottom. Three gates were opened on each of the four walls. The gates in the east, south and west walls provided access to city interior, while those in the north led to the imperial parks and palace. These gates were highly fortified. Each of the nine gates in the east, south and west walls were assigned with a three– tower defense system: an arrow tower in the front, a fort tower in the middle and a brake tower in the back. The space between the arrow tower and the normal tower is called barbican, which can prevent the soldiers who broke through the first tower from attacking the second one. Gates were shut and locked at dusk when the curfew began and only those who with a permission issued by the court were allowed to enter or leave the city during the night. The workers continued construction on the tomb until the emperor's death in 209BC. The mound was a scale model of the palace, the empire and the world. The labourers installed automatically triggered weapons in the mausoleum to safeguard the treasures and ward off tomb robbers. Most of the workmen who were working on the tomb when the Emperor died were buried alive with Qin to serve him in the afterlife. • 19. Islam : The Culture Of Islam And Islam Culture If Islam was sent to all mankind, then logically, it can only be inferred that it does not deem one culture superior to another. That being said, the spread of Islam was the spread of religion, not culture. Islam is often conflated with Arab culture, and vice versa. However, this perception of Islam as a whole is entirely untrue, as Islam is not a religion specifically for the Arabs, but for all humanity. Arabic might be the language of Islam, but there is no culture for Islam. But because of this misconception, most people assume something is Islamic simply because it looks Arabic. Although most have a mental image of what we deem "Islamic" architecture to be, there is in fact no style of Islamic architecture, as Islam did not force any culture onto the people it reached. The designs of Islamic buildings were usually influenced by the culture of the societies the religion reached, and the only similarities these building have with each other are their practical aspects. When Islam came to Constantinople, it co–opted an existing church known as the Hagia Sophia, which today is known as an icon of mosque architecture. On the other hand, when Muslims during the Ming dynasty built a mosque, they used typical aspects of Chinese architecture. These examples demonstrate that Islam is independent of culture, including cultural architecture styles. The only architectural aspects these two share are practical, such as an empty space for prayer and a place to make wudu'. These ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The earth in the ancient city of Xi'an continues to astound archaeologists. When excavation work to find more terracotta relics restarted for the third time last year in Xi'an, archaeologists admitted they did not expect to make any groundbreaking discoveries. Researchers suggested that the No 1 pit, the largest of the three that surround the tomb of China's first emperor Qin Shihuang (259–210 BC), was in a worse condition than the other two and not likely to offer rich pickings. However, the experts were more than happy to be proven wrong. Along with the more than 114 broken figures unearthed since digging resumed in June last year, the discovery ... "It was a pleasant surprise," said Xu Weihong, who is leading the excavation of the 200–square– meter–site, at the Museum of the Terracotta Warriors and Horses of Qin Shihuang in Shaanxi province. "We found some painted in pink, red, white and lilac." The colors better highlight the expression on the figures' faces and could prove invaluable to the study of ancient China. And thanks to new technology developed in cooperation with a German institute, technicians on the scene were able to preserve the relics in their original painted colors – something that was unthinkable during the previous two digs. The first, which lasted from 1978 until 1984, resulted in the discovery of 1,087 clay relics. However, after being exposed to air, they all quickly lost their color and turned an oxidized gray. (A second dig started in 1985 but halted a year later due to technical reasons.) China's Terra-Cotta Army In March of 1974, while drilling a well, a work brigade of farmers discovered a subterranean chamber nearby the royal tomb of Qin Shi Huangdi, the first Emperor of China (Encyclopedia Britannica). The superstitious old women of the village believed that the digging would disturb the Earth God. Therefore, due to these spiritual beliefs, they did not report the discovery right away. Eventually, archeologists came to Xi'an in droves to study and extend the digs. This led to the uncovering of three vast pits to the east of the burial tomb. In these pits, chariots, weapons and over 7,000 terracotta soldiers and horses were unearthed (Roberts p. 25). On both the northern and southern sides of the war formation stand 180 warriors which serve as flank guards. The rear guards are on the western end, with two lines facing east and another facing west. Some soldiers are armed with battle robe, and some are equipped with armor. The combat formations are more complex, and the units of armed soldiers are more complete. There are over 80 war chariots, about 1,300 terracotta warriors and horses, and thousands of bronze weapons. • 33. Eastern Culture And Western Culture Eastern culture and Chinese culture are unique in many ways. Many ideas and customs in the eastern world account for it's unique qualities. One country in the east that is an exceptional representation of eastern culture is China. China's geography, prehistory, role of women, philosophies, and culture, are factors that separate China from the rest of the world and shape China into the unique country it is today. Many components account for the uniqueness of eastern culture. Eastern people are more likely to hide their feelings. Many times they will keep a straight face or act happy, when they are actually going through troublesome times. Eastern people are more private about their relationships. They keep their intimate relations behind doors. Countries in the east glorify collectivism. The idea of collectivism views the group as the primary body. This means that the individual is given little worth. Decisions are made as a group and very rarely is a person asked, "What would you like to do?" Family is the central institution in eastern society and is imperative to their way of life. When a child's parent grows into old age, they are expected to care and provide space for them to live in their house. Because grandparents commonly live in the same house as their grandchildren, they are often involved in the raising of the children and are highly respected among the children. This imperialistic religion stands in stark contrast to the Christianity that first came to the Horn of Africa, Central Asia, China, and Northern Ireland nearly two centuries earlier. The Army Of The Undead Essay The Army of the Undead In 1974 Chinese farmers in Lintong District, Xi 'an, of the Shaanxi province were digging for a well when they unearthed fragments of clay figures and made one of the most important discoveries in art history to date. Archaeologists were notified of the discovery and they began excavating the area for more clues as to what was buried. The clay army of China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, was found buried in pits near the emperor's underground tomb, over 8,000 warriors dated to approximately the late third century BCE. The massive life sized army was once in full color and complete with weapons such as swords and bows. Researchers have studied the various techniques and new technology that was introduced to create the fine detail and unique features of each figure. Art historians have speculated possible influences from other cultures such as Greek and Hellenistic that helped shape the style of the figures. The terracotta warriors have been excavated from four main pits, other clay figures including chariots, horses, and performers have been discovered around the emperor's tomb. The clay army is a part of a much larger necropolis consisting of several halls, stables, and an imperial park around the tomb mound. Qin Shi Huang's tomb hasn't been excavated out of fear of destroying artifacts buried within by exposing them. The discovery of the Terracotta army at first seemed to strengthen the idea of Chinas first emperor being a ruthless warmonger who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

China has made amazing technological advances such as silk, paper, gunpowder, and many other products. Chinese records reach over five thousand years back. It is difficult to cover even the most important events of this old society in a short space, yet here are some highlights. The first dynasty to rule China was the Shang Dynasty (1600–1046 BCE), followed by the Xia dynasty (2200–1700 BCE), established by Emperor Yu, and after that the Zhou Dynasty (1122–256 BCE). Historical records are hard to find for these times in the world in which China had these dynasties. In 221 BCE, Qin Shi Huangdi took the throne, destroying neighboring city–states, and binding China together as its own. He established the Qin Dynasty, which kept going until 206 BCE. Today, he is best–known for his complex tomb in Xian (in the past Chang 'an), which houses the fantastic armed force of the terracotta warriors. Qin Shi Huang 's awkward term was toppled by the armed force of normal man Liu Bang in 207 BCE. Liu then established the Han Dynasty, which kept going until 220 BCE. In the Han period, China extended west all the way to India, opening an exchange of goods along what might later turn into the Silk Road. Archaeologists are currently preoccupied with many other sites surrounding the tomb. Most of the work going into excavating and preserving the Terracotta Army to the east of the tomb mound. Thus the Terracotta Warriors were born. As a potter myself I have always been fascinated with the herculean effort and particularities of the production of the Terracotta warriors. Each figure is life sized, not made using a mold and utterly unique from figure to figure. Further more not just any clay would do, because the statue would be so heavy due to its size the clay itself would have to be uncharacteristically strong as well as dense to stand up on its own power and also not to explode in the hand bricked kilns used at the time. The clay used to make these 8,000 life sized figures can only be found in one place which is located only 18 kilometers away from the Terracotta warriors grave. The method used in making the Terracotta warriors is the coil method, where long clay coils, or snakes, are wound into shape of each separate piece of the warrior. So his legs would be made separately from his torso or head. It would then be smoothed over and embellishments are then ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. The Tomb Of The First Emperor Of China Artefacts at a burial site can portray what an ancient culture found important in life and their beliefs about death. Using evidence from the tomb of the First Emperor of China we can gain insight about life in China during his reign. Emperor Qin Shi Huang is arguably the greatest leader in Chinese history. Qin unified China, gave China its name, built large sections of the Great Wall of China, initiated sweeping reforms, improved roadways (Konstam, 2008, p. 123), produced weapons with blast furnaces, abolished serfdom, was China's first bonafide emperor and imposed standardisation of law, language, currency, measurements, trade and writing (Santon, 2010, p. 249). Conversely the First Emperor ordered all works of literature and philosophy to be burnt (Lindesay & Baofa, 2008, p. 8), and decreed mass murder, destroying anyone who displeased him (Hunt, 2007, p. 205). Most importantly however, Qin is renowned for being buried in the world's largest tomb in Xian not far from the famous terracotta army, which was created to honour and protect him in the afterlife. This tomb was successfully built to mirror the universe and his empire (White, 2008, p. 337). From his tomb we learn about the religious beliefs, military ranks, weapons, transportation, art practices, advanced technologies and overruling power of the Emperor relevant to the Qin Dynasty. Evidence from the Emperor's tomb is vital in understanding what life in China was really like during his reign. The First Emperor's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. The Terracotta Warriors Of Emperor Qin Shihaung 's Real Army The Terracotta Warriors were discovered in Xian, China in 1974 by a group of local farmers. Each figure demonstrates a high degree of individualism, and when first discovered historians questioned whether the soldiers were modelled on Emperor Qin Shihuang's actual army. This theory is still being investigated today, but with archaeological technologies constantly evolving, historians are analysing the so–called 'Eighth Wonder of the World' and are obtaining evidence to both support and discount this theory. For now though, the question remains: were the Terracotta Warriors portraits of Emperor Qin Shihaung's real army? A study, called Imperial Logistics, was undertaken in 2014 by a group of scholars from the Institute of Archaeology at University College London and archaeologists from the Emperor Qin Shihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum in Xian, China. The research team used new technology to allow a more thorough morphometric analysis of the Terracotta Warriors than had been achieved previously. The technology, a combination of structure– from–motion and multiview–stereo (SfM–MVS), allowed the research team to create three– dimensional reconstructions of the ears of thirty terracotta warriors, as seen in Source 1. While the source only displays twelve ears, it demonstrates the shape and size variations the archaeologists found. Ears have been regarded as unique to each individual as fingerprints, and therefore Source 1 suggests that the Terracotta Warriors were likely portraits ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
