Borderline Personality Disorder And Mental Health Disorder
Borderline Personality Disorder There are many disorders in our world that affect us every day.
Some of these disorders can be manageable by simple changes in daily activates and others need
extensive treatments and yet will never be "cured". Borderline personality disorder is one that
affects a person so radically that the person may consider suicide or even commit it. Extensive
therapy and even sometimes drugs are needed to lead a healthy life. BORDERLINE
PERSONALITY DISORDER (BPD) is a mental health disorder that affects how a person processes
information and his or her ability to understand and cope with different social situations. (Dolecki,
2012) People who suffer from BPD don't really understand the ways of relationships (friends,
family, intimate). They see concrete ways and barely see the abstract of society. They are not very
reliable or dependable and have problems keeping jobs, friends and even paying bills. "People with
this disorder are usually impulsive and do not always make thoughtful decisions". (Dolecki, 2012)
Emotions can rage through the person which can confuse them to think that they possibly are
Bipolar. There are many symptoms that can be expressed in a person who has borderline personality
disorder. The symptoms can be general with things such as mood and emotion swings, impulsive
acting, low self–esteem, and outbursts. Many of these are common signs of teens going through
puberty, but if they are the signs of a person with

The Problem of Obesity
The Problem of Obesity
Western Governors University
Collegiate Level Reasoning and Problem Solving
James Reed
The Problem of Obesity Obesity is a major problem in American. Year after year, new diets are
published, and new medications are hailed as wonder drugs that will take weight off with little
physical effort, yet the problem still exists unabated. In testimony before the US Congress, Berzins
(2001) asserted that, "[weight] is a complex result of heredity, culture and lifestyle." According to
Rosin (2004), "About one–third of the U.S. population is 20 percent or more overweight and is
therefore at risk of suffering high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and other cardiovascular
diseases." Finding the best way to deal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They assume that if the number of sidewalks and bike paths are increased, people will be more
inclined to exercise and drive less. However, just because more of these will be built does not ensure
they will be used by the public. They believe the government should impose a tax on food they
deem detrimental to our health, regulate the ways this food is advertised, and limit its accessibility.
However, at a time when both houses of congress are controlled by the Republicans, a party whose
philosophy is "they who govern least govern best," it is unrealistic to think that additional taxes and
bureaucracy will be considered an effective strategy. The authors propose a three step solution to the
problem. First, initiate a "twinkie tax" on sodas and junk food. Next, the food industry should be
regulated, even if it only comes in the form of banning junk food ads aimed at children. Finally,
limit the places where unhealthy foods are available "...through zoning and planning" (2004). The
limitations of these suggestions are numerous. Americans feel overtaxed already, hence the
Republican revolution we have seen in recent years. Secondly, people do not like being told what is
right or wrong for them, which is what regulation insinuates. Third, in a capitalist society, why
should any

The Representation Of Mental Illness
When thinking of mental illness, what image pops into your head? An unstable old lady in restraints
talking to herself? A pre–teen harming themselves in a bathroom stall? Norman Bates? The Joker?
All these inaccurate examples stem from the medias representation of mental illness. This is an
important issue to address as, society has been fed these wrongful depictions for decades and it can
be challenging to overcome and shift these presentations (Uwujaren). The representation of mental
ill health in film, exploits mental illness especially when it is a negative depiction. This can have
detrimental effects to real individuals who suffer from mental illnesses (Uwujaren). Horror films in
particular spew a certain tone and mood; many times the villain suffers from mental illness, when
this occurs audiences immediately associate mental ill health with these characters (Goodwin204).
Stigmatization and stereotypes are conjured by the film industry that leave audiences believing all
mental ill people are like what they see in films. The film industry repeatedly uses mental illness to
portray negative characters, this can be detrimental in reality. On an ethical scale, the exploitation of
people for entertainment is wrong. Staggering amounts of people suffer from mental illness; while
the media presents these illnesses to generate money, real people suffer (Holliday). Some questions
we must ask are: What is a just or unjust depiction? How do we determine what is ethically

Abortion And Its Effects On Society
Abortion in Society
The modern world today is brought together by many different cultures, beliefs, thoughts, opinions
and morals. Which makes life difficult at times and causes people to not get along when differences
can not be set aside. There are many issues and topics that are the root of these problems, which
may never be solved and more than likely will never be solved based on characteristics of cultures
and beliefs. Abortion is a very diverse topic in today's society for which there may never be a
correct answer to live up to everyone's morals, but both sides present persuasive facts and opinions
to justify their beliefs. Recent data found in a Pew Research Center Poll shows the support for
abortion is as high as it has been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"In the United Kingdom provocative images of the fetus generated by four dimensional
ultrasonography have fuelled a reassessment of fetal capabilities along with suggestions that the
fetus can respond both emotionally and cognitively. Subsequent political and media discussion in
the United Kingdom has debated changing abortion laws and procedures to mitigate against fetal
pain (DerbyShire)." This could impact the choices of many tremendously, if society would ever talk
about abortion in a civilized manner even though it is very hard to discuss, many lives could be
saved.
A lot of people believe that more than half of abortions are because of teens. Whether they are too
immature or they are not using contraceptives. Although sometimes that is true, although most
abortions are not because of teen pregnancies. According to Jeff Jones, minors accounted for only
about forty percent of abortions and these happened without their parents or guardians ever
knowing. Point three percent of abortions in 2013 were by fifteen year olds and younger (Jones).
While teens are a very small portion of abortions adults are the vast majority. Unmarried women in
2013 held responsible for 85.2% of all abortions (Jones). Which could argue that they are the ones
being more irresponsible than minors. Then twenty–fiver perfect of abortions were because the
mothers "were not ready for a child (Jones)." Which makes adults sound more immature because

Persuasive Essay on Building of Rec. Center
Teen Activity Persuasive Essay
By: Eduardo Gutierrez Teens in todays society are often at risk of abusing substances, getting into
trouble, and causing violent scenes. They also are still trying to discover who they are, what
interests them, who to hang around with, and just discover themselves. But an issue people debate
about is the actions that teens choose to do. Many teens often hangout in groups at a variety of
locations such as houses, parks, the mall, and other places such as a recreational center. Although
teens may not see harm in being out and about with friends, adults may think otherwise. Some
parents may be worried where there kids are or what they're doing, other parents may just say, "Let

A successful recreational center is the "Howell Recreational Center and Park" they have a variety of
tasks and sports for teens to participate in that could appeal to many people, they have classes,
programs, sports, trips, and other activities. A teen recreational center can proide many benefits such
as positive youth development, a supervised substance free place to socialize with peers, healthy
activity & prevention programs, promote ownership and responsibility, provide community service,
provide teens with leadership roles, and give teens a voice. In todays society teens are often
associated with drinking, doing drugs, and causing trouble. If a recreation center was built what
would be stopping teens from bringing drugs and alcohol there? They may even be getting more
teens to participate in such wreckless behavior. In the past year about 70.6% of teens have
consumed alcohol and thats just highschool seniors. Also, in order to even have a recreational center
you would first need an advisory committee and later a board of directors. For you to have these you
would need to get voulenteers from the community to take part in these groups, which community
members may not want to partake in or support. To even consider having a recreational center you
would first have to see what people in the

Censorship And Its Effect On Children
Namita Sharma Mr. McCormick 2/19/2015 ENG 3U1 Monkey See, Monkey Do Monkey see,
monkey do, a simple phrase relevant to today's society. Those in society that simply do not know
any better, such as children, are inclined to imitate what they see being done. Without censorship
daily television shows are increasingly exhibiting more violence, foul language and sexuality to
susceptible youth. Due to lack of censorship, explicit music lyrics and inappropriate images on
music videos are being introduced to impressionable children. There is a lack of control on the
internet leading to internet addiction and forces vulnerable adolescents to face cyber bullying. In a
variety of mediums not enough censorship is used, which influences impressionable youth to think
and behave negatively. The increasing amount of violence, foul language and sexuality available to
children on TV is harmful to their development. What was once a time for children to watch TV
with content suitable for their age is now directed for an older audience, Family Hour. Statistics
show that this is the time most children are watching television with their family members. Despite
knowing this, "Since 2000–2001, the amount of sexual content during the Family Hour has
increased by 22.1%" (Parents Television Council 55). A poll done later in March of 2007 asked the
general public if they thought there was too much sexual content on television. 79% of those that
participated in the poll stated that there was too much.

Against The Legalization Of Drugs
Against the Legalization of Drugs
Legalization of drugs is an increasingly hot topic in today's society. It is one of that needs vast
advancements in research and treatment for addicts to prevent the moral and legal obligations, as
well as the severe health ramifications that come along with addiction of these powerful drugs. To
legalize drugs would be detrimental to the family unit as well as our youth and have serious health
consequences at an alarming rate.
James Q. Wilson, author of, "Against the Legalization of Drugs," was the first Senior Fellow at
Boston College's Clough Center for the Study of Constitutional Democracy and Distinguished
Scholar in its Department of Political Science. In his essay, Wilson portrays his stance on being
against legalization of drugs and speaks of figuring out how to win the war on drugs and "not send
up the white flag of surrender." Wilson explains the historical aspect of not legalizing heroin in 1972
and health deterioration along with the number of deaths to heroin assisted in decreasing the number
of heroin users in the United States. Wilson gives perspectives from the stance of legalization and
why it would not have worked and will not work today. Wilson's argument on the detrimental effects
of legalizing drugs on our society as a whole would not only have severe effects on our children and
young adults, but also our unborn fetuses.
Specifically, Wilson's essay describes the detrimental effects of heroin and crack cocaine.

Inequality and Redistribution
Inequality and Redistribution Income inequality in America is higher than in any other industrial
nation in the world. Many believe this creates serious problems for both United States citizens and
its economy. The inequality difference is continually getting larger and worsening these problems.
Over the past three decades America's economy has seen continuous growth; but this is
accompanied with no increase in purchasing power for poor and middle class citizens. On the other
hand, incomes of the richest Americans have dramatically increased, which only furthers the gap
between social classes. In 2008, the top one percent of Americans earned over 20% of the national
income, which is significantly higher than only 50 years ago. Economists use a strategy called the
"Gini Coefficient" to measure the relative equality between nations. Since 1980, the Gini
Coefficient for the United States has risen from 0.388 to 0.45. This is a very high rating compared to
other egalitarian countries, such as most of Europe and Japan, whose ratings are generally in the
high 0.2s and low 0.3s. Wealth inequality is even greater than income inequality, however. "The top
1 percent of Americans own forty–four hundred times as much wealth per person as the bottom 40
percent." This large difference between rich and poor American citizen wealth and income creates
numerous problems for the United States. The United States is based on one strong principle belief,
democracy. Democracy is supposed to

Popular Culture and Violent Behavior Essay
Popular Culture and Violent Behavior
Introduction
In 1871 E.B. Taylor defined culture as 'that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art,
morals, law, customs, and many other capabilities and habits acquired by...[members] of society.'[1]
Taylor was talking about 'high' culture, an aristocratic view of the past–times such as ballet, theatre
and art. Popular culture, on the other hand, is a form of 'low' culture and is based primarily on
marketing, mass production and revenue. Low culture is what is sold to the masses, ergo, low
culture equals mass culture. All these terms refer to popular culture, defined in the Oxford
Dictionary of Sociology as:

The question I have posed is a very contentious one, which has been debated by scholars and
graduates for some time, with many arguing that popular culture and mass media are ways of
brainwashing the 'masses' into the ways of a dominant social order. Others believe that popular
culture is a type of 'folk' culture which encompasses the idea of an 'alternative' culture incorporating
minority groups, perhaps with subversive values sometimes challenging the dominant control
groups, as was scene with the advent of the 'Indie' music scene in the mid nineteen nineties.
In this dissertation I aim to uncover whether aforementioned 'subversive values' can be uncovered in
popular culture or whether popular culture is really a means by which the masses can direct
dominant controlling forces.
The main way I will do this is through my research into violent behaviour and the impact that
popular culture can have on individuals and groups in society – mainly adolescents and young
children – by looking at susceptibility, attraction, reactions and influences. Figures from the internet
highlight the capability television can have to influence an individual:
'There are 7.5 violent acts per minute on television in the United States

when one says Slavery? Most people generally think about the past when african americans were
forced into slavery, to this day slavery does is exist but in a form of sexual trafficking. In this
persuasive speech I will be arguing to go against sexual trafficking, hoping to expose the ugly truth
about the dark industry. Even though sexual trafficking is not exactly slavery victims of sexual

The definition of a slave is ''a person who is the legal property of another and is forced to obey
them.'' Even though people may not be thinking as sexual trafficking as an act of slavery, I think that
it is because like slavery you are transporting an individual against their will for a benefit for
another individual, Sex trafficking involves an individual being kidnapped, drugged, and raped thus
why it is modern slavery. Like slavery, sexual trafficking pimps use force to ensure that victims
comply as well when being kidnapped from their homes violence is applied in which slavery has the
same concept. Pimps like to beat down on the victims to a point in which they have low self worth,
pride and dignity. Therefore also relating to slavery as one is using force to make one feel down on
themselves to get more of what they want and to also leave a message that they are greater than you.
Some people say that sexual trafficking is one's only source of income that without this business
many people would not get income this is true however, selling victims for your own benefit goes
against morals as you are putting a price–tag on one's freedom for your benefit. This proves that
sexual trafficking is not only a modern day slavery act but also goes against morals for

These types of people attend to the logic and strength of arguments and evidence contained in the

persuasion mechanisms such as bragging about how rich and successful he is, this intern creates a
sense of authority for voters persuading them to think how powerful and driven he is which will be
an imminent quality for a president to have the upper hand in the government.
Since Hillary has political experience she persuades voters with the use of logical reasoning and
political rhetoric. The article Psychology of Persuasion quotes Hillary as saying, "One looks to be
hunkering down with homework, research and rehearsals, while the other [Donald Trump] seems to
be taking an on–the–fly casual approach to what could be the most important 90 minutes of the

political knowledge to persuade individuals to think Trump is inexperienced and should not waste
the time of citizens who are looking for change in America.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the definition of rap is accompanied with the

reflects how rap affects our society today. Rap can be catchy, but it is harmful to our society for

One main thing that it affects is the brain. When you are doing something you enjoy, your brain
releases dopamine. Dopamine is a chemical compound that is commonly known to occur as a
reward. This "reward" causes the person to want to continue doing what gives them that good
feeling. The release of dopamine can cause someone's addiction to get worse. The surplus of
dopamine can cause people to lose the ability to find pleasure in activities. The person ends up
relying on their substance to feel good. After a while they build up a tolerance, therefore, they have
to up the dosages on their substance. This is so they can still achieve that good feeling. Drugs hurt
the communication system of humans. They also affect how people can think through problems.
Researchers have found that people who have an addiction, they also have other medical problems.
Some of those medical problems could include cancer or other diseases ("Drugs, Brains, and
Behavior: The Science of Addiction", 2007, pg. 1–30).
Being addicted to any substance can lead to major health issues. When you inject drugs you are at a
higher risk of receiving AIDS, hepatitis C, and liver problems. Drugs can also lead people down a
dangerous path. They start to be careless, so sexually transmitted diseases are found more in addicts.

Their inadequacies are, however, themselves reflections of economic and related social
circumstances that determine opportunities, influence motives, help shape attitudes, and fix the daily
prospects for health and well–being. A person may experience internal conflict in trying to decide
which set of values, attitudes, and codes of behavior to accept and internalize. For example, to a kid
living in a neighborhood that has many criminal types, these people may be symbols of economic
and social success because they have money, expensive clothes, fancy cars, and other material
possessions that inspire respect and jealousy. The kids may draw to the criminal life–style of these
people because they want the same symbols of success for themselves. At the same time, several
youths in the neighborhood may have good relationships with parents or other adults who are
noncriminal in their life–styles and who try to instill non–delinquent values in them. A young person
exposed to both types of influences must balance out their merits and decide whether to accept the
values of one set of associates or those of the other. Between 1990 and 2002 there were 13,504
males and 3,168 females who died as a result of homicide. This showed that males, ages 12 through

The Importance Of Censorship
Men and women in the United States of America, find censorship helpful when it protects their
children from harmful things, but they are against censorship when it is used out of context. Parents
seem to appreciate censorship more when it shelters children from learning indecent things in the
world that could cause danger to themselves or the others around them (Pillai, Prabhakar ). But
censorship is not always good like when it is used in school's or in books; but censorship can be
helpful when it is used on the internet, social media, or in music. For instance censorship is
favorable when it stops the epidemic of racism, but when censorship stops an individual from saying

Of course, parents want what is best for their children, but the parents do not seem to be able to
apprehend that when they censor certain topics in schools it really harms their children's education.
Censorship in schools look as if it to guarantee that children will mature making the same exact
decisions that go along with what their parent's think is right by getting rid of additional
alternatives. This may guarantee that those children will follow in their parents' footsteps, but when
the children mature and are introduced to additional alternatives it may cause a rancorous
reaction(Lifescript).
However, music including censorship can contain a good reaction for both infants and grown ups.
Music including censorship can have an effect on infants and grown ups in the same way, and
adjusting music can help stabilize it. Music is very persuasive and it can persuade an individual to
do things that may have a positive effect or that may have a negative effect. A spokesperson for
music censorship has noticed that it is helpful to prohibit songs that talk about indecent content or
even swear words because of what type of things this type of music may suggest. For instance a few
words in a few songs that causes racism or violence seem appealing. But by adjusting this lyrics in

"Children are among the greatest of imitators " The debate over media violence has eluded
definitive answers for more then three decades. At first glance, the debate is dominated by one
question. Whether or not media violence causes real life violence and whether or not it has a
negative effect of the modern day Canadian family. Closer examination reveals a political battle. On
one hand, there are those who blame media violence for societal violence and want to censor violent
content to protect our children. On the other hand, there are those who see regulation as a slippery

Violence has always played a role in Television. But there's a growing concern that, in recent years,
something about media violence has changed. Laval University professors Guy Paquette and

that between 1993 and 2001, incidents of physical violence increased by 378 per cent. TV shows in
2001 averaged 40 acts of violence per hour (Public Health Agency, 2003). Throughout the cycle of
life we imitate others in order to learn new thing and to reinforce our identity within a particular

Persuasive Essay On Decriminalizing All Drugs
"We all have an interest in making sure teens grow up healthy and drug free." – John Walters Would
you like to live in a safer, drug–free community? I do and here is how to start: by decriminalizing all
drugs! Since Richard Nixon coined the phrase "War on Drugs" in 1971, America has failed
miserably to reduce the consumption and traffic of illicit drugs from outside our borders. Although a
heavy portion are against decriminalizing drugs because of short–term consequences and health
concerns in public communities, Portugal's evident sixteen–year experience with drug
decriminalization has proven otherwise with significant, long–term positive outcomes. However,
due to the long–lasting and persuasive positive outcomes of decriminalization, it is vital that the
U.S. strongly reconsiders the prohibition of all drugs for the health and economic benefit of our
communities. Obviously, there will be short–term consequences but also benefits too. Unfortunately,
the hype of decriminalizing drugs will cause an increase in the number of users but it is important to
note that a considerable amount of those being newly documented are closet junkies finally being
revealed. As Dr. Caitlin Hughes, a member of the Drug Policy Modelling Program of the National
Drug and Alcohol Research Centre puts it, "Portuguese decriminalization did not lead to major
increases in drug use. Indeed, evidence indicates reductions in problematic use, drug–related harms
and criminal justice overcrowding" (Hughes; Stevens). As this research shows, the predictions on
Portugal's well–being after the decriminalization of all drugs were incorrect and the complete
opposite occurred–creating healthy and safer communities because of awareness. Bringing our
attention back to the increasing number of users within the hype years, public safety is a large
concern where communities will have a difficult time adapting to the new policy and becoming
accustomed to a new culture and lifestyle. On the contrary, I find a few years of craziness to be
minimal in comparison to the long–term achievement that this law intends to achieve. Portugal has
proved that decriminalization reduces drug use, drug–related harms, and criminal justice
overcrowding. João Goulão,

Abstinence-Only Sexual Education

Comprehensive Sexual Education is More Effective than Abstinence Only Sexual Education "A
mutually faithful monogamous relationship in the context of marriage is the expected standard of
human sexual activity. Different people will disagree about the veracity of this statement, but we
know that it does not reflect the experiences of the majority of young people" (Collins 1). Sexual
education is a mandatory part of every grade school curriculum and is funded by the federal
government. "The content of sexuality education curricula in America varies widely by region, by
school district, and sometimes, by classroom" (Collins 1). I believe that because of this fact that it

The classes proved information about contraceptives, STDs and HIV prevention. It also is age
appropriate and scientifically explained. Collins says it well that "by denying teens the full range of
information regarding human sexuality, abstinence–only education fails to provide young people
with the information they need to protect their health and well being." Students when asked survey
by the Kasier Family Foundation said that they knew more and felt better prepared to handle
different situations. Abstinence only education just chooses to avoid it and does not take into
account students who decide a different path. Abstinence only education supports say that by
teaching the "abstinence–plus" education that they are sending mixed messages towards students.
Current advocates for comprehensive education cite that "providing teens with contraceptive
information does not encourage early sexual activity." The Surgeon General David Satcher had said
that based off of the information he had derived from both approaches "evidence gives strong
support to the conclusion that providing information about contraception does not increase
adolescent sexual activity....[it only] increased condom and contraceptive uses among adolescents
who were sexually active." (Collins 9)Most evaluations of many different types of

Essay about The Results of Children in Fatherless Homes
Divorce and out–of–wedlock childbearing are now epidemic in American society. Both forms of
disrupted families are harmful to children and to society. The children of single parents are more
likely to do poorly in school, commit crimes, and become single parents themselves. In addition, the
increase in single–parent families contributes to such social problems as poverty, crime, and a
decline in the quality of public education.
Divorce and out–of–wedlock childbirth are transforming the lives of American children. In the
postwar generation more than 80 percent of children grew up in a family with two biological parents
who were married to each other. By 1980 only 50 percent could expect to spend their entire

Indeed, they help to explain why family structure is such an explosive issue for Americans. The
debate about it is not simply about the social–scientific evidence, although that is surely an
important part of the discussion. It is also a debate over deeply held and often conflicting values.
How do we begin to reconcile our long–standing belief in equality and diversity with an impressive
body of evidence that suggests that not all family structures produce equal outcomes for children?
How can we square traditional notions of public support for dependent women and children with a
belief in women's right to pursue autonomy and independence in childbearing and child–rearing?
How do we uphold the freedom of adults to pursue individual happiness in their private
relationships and at the same time respond to the needs of children for stability, security, and
permanence in their family lives? What do we do when the interests of adults and children conflict?
These are the difficult issues at stake in the debate over family structure.

In the past these issues have turned out to be too difficult and too politically risky for debate. In the

He emphasizes that although the West is still strong and growing in many areas, other civilizations
are growing at a faster rate. Asian civilizations are booming both economically and in their military
strength and the Muslim culture is spreading demographically, while the West is becoming
increasingly preoccupied with its own internal problems such as crime, government deficits, drug
abuse, and a declining work ethic. Huntington uses graphs and charts very effectively in this section
of his book to visually depict the decline of the West's population, territory, and economic influence.
Also in this section, the concept of modernization vs. Westernization is discussed. Many cultures
desire to become modern, but without the negative trappings of Western civilization such as the
perceived lack of morals and weak work ethic of Westerners, and the primarily Western concept of
the separation between church and state. Modernization was once equated with Westernization but,
according to Huntington, this is now not always the case. His examples include the Japanese and
Islamic cultures. In Japan there has been a return to traditional Asian culture due to the prevailing
belief that their economic prosperity is directly linked to their traditional culture and that the
problems of the U.S. are linked to our Western culture. Islamic leaders have expressed similar
attitudes as well, and Huntington goes into great detail

Adderall Abuse: Regulating The Academic Steroid
In the modern world of college, an excessive use of the academic steroid, Adderall, has become an

Psychoactive Drugs And Its Effects On The Uk
Background
Psychoactive drugs can be defined as any chemical substance, whether it be of a synthetic or of an
organic nature, used with the purpose of altering an individual's psychological state of mind, mood
or perception (Gossop, 1993, cited in Saggers & Gray, 1998). According to Fleckenstein, Hanson &
Venturelli (2014), drugs are allocated into two categories consisting of illegal and legal. Illegal
drugs usually consist of hallucinogenic substances such as marijuana (however, can be used for
medical reasons), crack cocaine, ecstasy and others. The law prohibits use of these substances and
can also result in social stigma. On the other hand, legal drugs consist of substances such as coffee,
alcohol, tobacco and over the counter (OTC) drugs, to a high extent these drugs are usually socially
accepted and the effects are inconspicuous if used in moderation.
Statistics of drug use amongst youth in the UK
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NHI) (2012a), deaths regarding drug use has
doubled since the 1980's, furthermore it is stated that there are more illnesses and disabilities from
drug abuse than any other avoidable health condition. There are many reasons why young people
may choose to indulge in the risky behaviour that is drug use. Individuals may feel pressured by
their peers, take this action out of curiosity or use it as a method for dealing with physiological or
psychological problems (Better Health, 2012). A study performed by Miller and Plant

Rites Of Passage, Right Or Wrong
Rites of Passage, "Right or Wrong"? Throughout history the term "rights of passage" has been used
to describe the transition of a person into a new stage of their lives. Rites of passage are relevant in
every day life all over the world. Most prominently though, Africa has a large population of people
whose groups still practice traditional rites of passage to mark special life achievements. Basically,
anything meaningful that happens within their tribe such as the birth of a child, the entrance into
adulthood, marriage, death, and so on, are all celebrated with the completion of different customs.
The celebration of rituals include dances, songs, and other formalities, however groups across the
continent also use varying methods of initiation that most commonly include circumcision in both
sexes. For decades, people have questioned whether or not this traditional initiation ritual is
necessary and if it could possibly be harmful to young people within certain tribes that practice
them. Much controversy surrounds the issue of following tradition even while performing
procedures such as female mutilation. How are these rites of passage viewed as beneficial and how
are they seen as destructive? What are some alternative rites of passage for these young initiates? A
rite of passage, in African culture, is a ceremonial event in which a person enters into a new stage of
their life(Haley, McNaughton, Moss, Sallah and Wilson 3). Many of the traditional rituals and

The Negative Effects Of Marijuana
Marijuana is a hyperactive drug that stimulates certain receptors in the brain triggered by its
neurotransmitters. This results in the brain's failure to regulate specific body functions and recognize
an individual's emotional responses. In the last century, the amount of marijuana being distributed
has significantly increased, further producing exceptionally high percentages of individuals who are
currently using it. Researchers say that marijuana has become the #1 addictive drug in America with
the potential of producing harmful effects to individuals who consume this substance. The debate on
whether marijuana should be pronounced legal in the U.S escalated rather quickly and is still
controversial among the states today. Marijuana is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Individuals who consume this substance tend to lose their motor control sensors and full
consciousness of their actions. Those who use marijuana experience many unpredictable symptoms,
causing the extremity of the effects to fluctuate according to the dosage he/she intakes. According to
Christopher Aanstoos article, "Short–term experiential effects include feelings of light–hearted
well–being and euphoria; increased sensory sensitivity and appreciation; and greater awareness,
creativity, insight, and sense of humor. Negative effects include difficulty with concentration, short–
term memory, and motor performance skills; and feeling anxious, tense, socially awkward, and
paranoid" (Aanstoos). The depth of the effects all depend on how an individual's body reacts to the
stimulant. Furthermore, marijuana contains an addictive toxin known as THC that alters the brain's
ability to process information and manage proper body function. The effects from THC vary
according to potency, dosage, setting, and the individuals experience and attitude (Aanstoos). The
effects that come from using marijuana coordinate with the amount he/she intakes. An individual
who consumes more THC is at a higher risk of experiencing longer and stronger effects. This all
corresponds with Aanstoos proceeding statement that, "Longer–term experiential effects are more
speculative. Many users report that insights remained significant and even life–changing. Negative
effects also have been proposed, including amotivational syndrome and an increased tendency to
later use other, more dangerous drugs (the "gateway drug" theory)" (Aanstoos). Marijuana not only
qualifies as an addictive drug but also as a persuasive one. The "gateway theory" means that after a
person is satisfied with the sensation they obtain from marijuana, he/she will potentially go on to try
dangerous more abusive drugs. Researchers seem to believe

Persuasive Speech Outline
Human Trafficking
SPECIFIC PURPOSE: At the end of this presentation the audience will be convinced that human
trafficking is an issue that they all need to be a part of and take action against so that women and
children can be freed from modern day slavery.
There are more human slaves in the world today then ever recorded in history, according to the UN
Global Compact.
I. Introduction
Everyone close your eyes. I want you to imagine a city near downtown Los Angeles. You see a little
girl. Her name is Mary. She is 13 years old with the most beautiful long black hair you have ever
seen. She is smiling laughing and skipping down the side walk, on her way to see her friends at the
local park. All of a sudden a black car comes up behind her. Mary sees the car and pays no mind to
it, merely glancing at it behind her.
The car begins to follow her as she turns on the road and Mary realizes that the car might be
following her. The car gets faster and faster. She begins to run, fearing for her life. The car speeds
up and eventually catches her. A tall man jumps out of the car, grabs her and throws her
in.Everything goes black and Mary wakes up to find herself in what seems to look like a holding
room with her hands and feet bound. She looks down to see that her clothes have been torn and she
is scared for her lie.
This is just a glimpse of one of many horrific stories that happens every single day right under our
very nose within our cities and local communities. So many believe that human trafficking is just a
third world problem. But the truth is, it is just as large here in the United States and in particular
here in California. I am speaking to you today in hopes that you will not only recognize human
trafficking as a crucial problem but to encourage you to take action against it and bring about
awareness.
II. Human trafficking is very much at large There are an estimated 27 million adults and 13 million
children around the world who are victims of human trafficking. Human trafficking is modern–day
slavery where every year, millions of men, women, and children are trafficked in countries around
the world, including the United

When smoking this drug, the THC goes directly to the lungs in which it is absorbed by alveoli.
Alveoli is where gas exchange happens by tiny air sacs. THC enters the blood stream in just a matter
of seconds of using this drug. When eating or drinking marijuana, it enters the stomach and is
carried to the liver in which it is then sent to the rest of the body. Eating marijuana is less effective
than smoking; however the effects of the drug stay in the body for twice as long. Even though this
drug leaves the body quicker when smoked rather than eaten, this drug is still dangerous. How
dangerous is marijuana? The initial effects of the chemical, "THC" in marijuana wears off in a few
hours, but the chemicals stay in the body for a longer period of time. These chemicals can last from
20 hours to 10 days, depending on the amount and potency in the drug used. Marijuana has many

Why Do We Get Married
People marry to get company that they would not get if they were single. Nobody wants to return to
an empty home, which is what happens if you do not marry. Isolation can be killing. Studies have
shown that isolation can be harmful to health as heavy smoking or drinking.
It is only in the movies that bachelors look young and carefree. If you see men who are single, after
the age of 28 or so, you will find that they look older and more worn out than married persons of the
same age. Scores of studies done in North America and Western Europe shows that married people
enjoy better health than singles. They also live longer.

They will learn that personal preference is more valuable than the welfare of another. They will
learn that selfishness is the model by which to live since the sacrifice of commitment to one person
has not been made.
In addition, children need security and instruction. Marriage helps to secure the family bond thereby
providing a more secure environment in which the children may grow so that they might properly
learn morality and integrity as they enter into society as adults. After all, those parents who do not
value marriage tend not to value commitment and children should not be raised where the parents
are not committed to each other.
Furthermore, marriage with its promise of fidelity, helps to ensure health through the prevention of
venereal diseases. Marriage helps to ensure the very sanctity of the spouse–to–spouse relationship
since marriage is a public statement of exclusive dedication. This helps to establish a foundation in
the relationship where a marriageless, living–together relationship can have no true trust since
people are together out of convenience. If it becomes inconvenient, then they can easily break up ––
children or no children.
Marriage is not just a piece of paper. It is a promise to live together faithfully, till death, through

Not Lowering the Drinking Age
Bryan Blejski ENG 101–010 Ms. Abbott 28 July 2011 Not Lowering the Drinking Age Many
teenage deaths in the United States are caused in some way by the influence of alcohol; however,
many people still believe that the legal drinking age should be reduced to eighteen. This issue has
been going on for years, but the law has not been changed since the change to twenty–one in 1980.
States have become stricter about preventing under–age drinking, but teenagers have no problem
getting alcohol. There are many arguments in favor of changing the drinking age back to eighteen.
The facts show that drinking alcohol is too large of a responsibility for an eighteen–year–old to

In summary, research supports the argument that the drinking age should consider the overall
perception of how successful undeveloped teens could handle alcohol. Those who want to see the
legal drinking age was reduced from twenty–one to eighteen often argue that the legal drinking age
in Canada and many European countries are in the middle of adolescence, and argue further that this
"lower drinking age has not resulted in the dismantling of the social structure "(Heath 28). As some
scientists and social researchers have pointed out, however, drinking habits of young people has
changed considerably in recent years as the influence of American advertising and the availability of
U.S. products has spread (Heath 231). Although the argument that a lower legal drinking age may be
based on data from other countries, we must remember that the culture of alcohol are different in
many of these countries and should not serve as a valid basis for a discussion of American matters.
Once again, science and research should lead to an argument for reducing or increasing the legal
drinking age. Interestingly, on a cultural tone, in relation to the argument against lowering the
drinking age, the fact that younger teens are allowed to drink helped researchers suggest that there is
an increase in binge drinking, which have been associated with a dramatic increase in harmful and

The Importance Of Teen Pregnancy
Disparities still persist to this day in social and economic context. The conditions that some
teenagers face in communities and families may contribute to teen pregnancy. Within the social
domain, peers are a big risk factor for teen pregnancy. Some factors include sexual pressure from
peers, belief that most peers are sexually active, friends who are sexually active, dating at an early
age, and dating someone who is a few years older than you (Southeastern Idaho Public Health, n.d.).
Many teenagers feel the pressure from their peers to have sex before they are ready. Those who
decide to give into peer pressure often are not informed about safe sexual behavior and therefore
may become pregnant. The same goes for those who believe that most of their peers are sexually
active. Surveys have shown that many teenagers report a greater percent than actual for the
following question: What percent of your peers do you think are sexually active? The pressure that
comes from assuming that most of your peers are sexually active can play a huge role in a teenager's
decision to participate in early sexual activity. Friends are just as much of a risk factor as family is.
If a friend is sexually active, the pressure to fit in and be similar to them starts developing. In these
peer situations, it is most likely a teenager's first time having sex. In that case, there is a lack of
knowledge that puts teenagers at risk of becoming pregnant. Dating at an early age can make a

government invests in non–residential alternatives diversion programs, and substitute imprisonment

prejudice is not inherited: it is 'taught'. Prejudice is unlearned as members of various groups come to
know each other as persons instead of stereotypes. WHAT DO YOU UNDERSTAND BY THE
TERM DISCRIMINATION? Discrimination is overt behaviour toward another person that is
different from the individual's usual behaviour toward others. It is differential treatment towards
others. In our society, discrimination may take place in various forms such as in education, voting,
employment, group membership, legal, occupational, political and social. It has been seen as unfair
treatment or injurious distinctions, especially unfair treatment. The dominant group treats members
of the minority group differently because of a variety of fears, fear of intermarriage, fear of job
competition, fear of loss of political power and special privileges, fear of decline of their own social
status should they associate with them. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE is one of the most common
crimes. It is present throughout society, usually hidden, but there, nontheless. Violence between
adults who are

Film : The Influence Of Pop Culture In Film
"Pop culture is the new babylon, into which so much art and intellect now flow, it is our Imperial
Theatre, Supreme Temple of the Western eye. We live in the age of idols. The pagan past, never
dead, flames again in our mystic hierarchies of stardom." (Crowley & Heyer, 2011). Film began in
the 1890's, being under a minute long with no sound or colour, to what can now reach to three
hours. By early 1960's more than 90% of American homes had hold of TV's. (Rodman, 2012) The
motion picture camera and projector were two of the Industrial Revolution's new gadgets. Movies
and films are part of the mass media that able to drive the emotion, attitude and behaviour of people
negatively, where the originality of movies purpose is for basic entertainment, educate or provide
information to the public.
The influence of pop culture in film has made an impact and encountered concerns about potential
harms in connection with young audiences, through the false advertising of the ideal body image
and look, promoting under–age and unsafe sexuality, and the abuse of drugs and violence.
"Younger people, particularly teens, are much more likely to be impacted than older adults because
they are still developing and shaping their worldviews, since they are still being socialized
politically, they are more likely to absorb all sorts of influences, including influences from film."
(Guida, 2015) An average teen spends 11 hours a day on all sorts of platforms that include pop
culture, including film.

Borderline Personality Disorder And Mental Health Disorder

  • 1. Borderline Personality Disorder And Mental Health Disorder Borderline Personality Disorder There are many disorders in our world that affect us every day. Some of these disorders can be manageable by simple changes in daily activates and others need extensive treatments and yet will never be "cured". Borderline personality disorder is one that affects a person so radically that the person may consider suicide or even commit it. Extensive therapy and even sometimes drugs are needed to lead a healthy life. BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER (BPD) is a mental health disorder that affects how a person processes information and his or her ability to understand and cope with different social situations. (Dolecki, 2012) People who suffer from BPD don't really understand the ways of relationships (friends, family, intimate). They see concrete ways and barely see the abstract of society. They are not very reliable or dependable and have problems keeping jobs, friends and even paying bills. "People with this disorder are usually impulsive and do not always make thoughtful decisions". (Dolecki, 2012) Emotions can rage through the person which can confuse them to think that they possibly are Bipolar. There are many symptoms that can be expressed in a person who has borderline personality disorder. The symptoms can be general with things such as mood and emotion swings, impulsive acting, low self–esteem, and outbursts. Many of these are common signs of teens going through puberty, but if they are the signs of a person with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Problem of Obesity The Problem of Obesity Western Governors University Collegiate Level Reasoning and Problem Solving James Reed The Problem of Obesity Obesity is a major problem in American. Year after year, new diets are published, and new medications are hailed as wonder drugs that will take weight off with little physical effort, yet the problem still exists unabated. In testimony before the US Congress, Berzins (2001) asserted that, "[weight] is a complex result of heredity, culture and lifestyle." According to Rosin (2004), "About one–third of the U.S. population is 20 percent or more overweight and is therefore at risk of suffering high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and other cardiovascular diseases." Finding the best way to deal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They assume that if the number of sidewalks and bike paths are increased, people will be more inclined to exercise and drive less. However, just because more of these will be built does not ensure they will be used by the public. They believe the government should impose a tax on food they deem detrimental to our health, regulate the ways this food is advertised, and limit its accessibility. However, at a time when both houses of congress are controlled by the Republicans, a party whose philosophy is "they who govern least govern best," it is unrealistic to think that additional taxes and bureaucracy will be considered an effective strategy. The authors propose a three step solution to the problem. First, initiate a "twinkie tax" on sodas and junk food. Next, the food industry should be regulated, even if it only comes in the form of banning junk food ads aimed at children. Finally, limit the places where unhealthy foods are available "...through zoning and planning" (2004). The limitations of these suggestions are numerous. Americans feel overtaxed already, hence the Republican revolution we have seen in recent years. Secondly, people do not like being told what is right or wrong for them, which is what regulation insinuates. Third, in a capitalist society, why should any ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Representation Of Mental Illness When thinking of mental illness, what image pops into your head? An unstable old lady in restraints talking to herself? A pre–teen harming themselves in a bathroom stall? Norman Bates? The Joker? All these inaccurate examples stem from the medias representation of mental illness. This is an important issue to address as, society has been fed these wrongful depictions for decades and it can be challenging to overcome and shift these presentations (Uwujaren). The representation of mental ill health in film, exploits mental illness especially when it is a negative depiction. This can have detrimental effects to real individuals who suffer from mental illnesses (Uwujaren). Horror films in particular spew a certain tone and mood; many times the villain suffers from mental illness, when this occurs audiences immediately associate mental ill health with these characters (Goodwin204). Stigmatization and stereotypes are conjured by the film industry that leave audiences believing all mental ill people are like what they see in films. The film industry repeatedly uses mental illness to portray negative characters, this can be detrimental in reality. On an ethical scale, the exploitation of people for entertainment is wrong. Staggering amounts of people suffer from mental illness; while the media presents these illnesses to generate money, real people suffer (Holliday). Some questions we must ask are: What is a just or unjust depiction? How do we determine what is ethically ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Abortion And Its Effects On Society Abortion in Society The modern world today is brought together by many different cultures, beliefs, thoughts, opinions and morals. Which makes life difficult at times and causes people to not get along when differences can not be set aside. There are many issues and topics that are the root of these problems, which may never be solved and more than likely will never be solved based on characteristics of cultures and beliefs. Abortion is a very diverse topic in today's society for which there may never be a correct answer to live up to everyone's morals, but both sides present persuasive facts and opinions to justify their beliefs. Recent data found in a Pew Research Center Poll shows the support for abortion is as high as it has been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "In the United Kingdom provocative images of the fetus generated by four dimensional ultrasonography have fuelled a reassessment of fetal capabilities along with suggestions that the fetus can respond both emotionally and cognitively. Subsequent political and media discussion in the United Kingdom has debated changing abortion laws and procedures to mitigate against fetal pain (DerbyShire)." This could impact the choices of many tremendously, if society would ever talk about abortion in a civilized manner even though it is very hard to discuss, many lives could be saved. A lot of people believe that more than half of abortions are because of teens. Whether they are too immature or they are not using contraceptives. Although sometimes that is true, although most abortions are not because of teen pregnancies. According to Jeff Jones, minors accounted for only about forty percent of abortions and these happened without their parents or guardians ever knowing. Point three percent of abortions in 2013 were by fifteen year olds and younger (Jones). While teens are a very small portion of abortions adults are the vast majority. Unmarried women in 2013 held responsible for 85.2% of all abortions (Jones). Which could argue that they are the ones being more irresponsible than minors. Then twenty–fiver perfect of abortions were because the mothers "were not ready for a child (Jones)." Which makes adults sound more immature because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Center Teen Activity Persuasive Essay By: Eduardo Gutierrez Teens in todays society are often at risk of abusing substances, getting into trouble, and causing violent scenes. They also are still trying to discover who they are, what interests them, who to hang around with, and just discover themselves. But an issue people debate about is the actions that teens choose to do. Many teens often hangout in groups at a variety of locations such as houses, parks, the mall, and other places such as a recreational center. Although teens may not see harm in being out and about with friends, adults may think otherwise. In todays society teens are often associated with drinking, doing drugs, and causing trouble. If a recreation center was built what would be stopping teens from bringing drugs and alcohol there? They may even be getting more teens to participate in such wreckless behavior. In the past year about 70.6% of teens have consumed alcohol and thats just highschool seniors. • 7. Censorship And Its Effect On Children Namita Sharma Mr. McCormick 2/19/2015 ENG 3U1 Monkey See, Monkey Do Monkey see, monkey do, a simple phrase relevant to today's society. Those in society that simply do not know any better, such as children, are inclined to imitate what they see being done. Without censorship daily television shows are increasingly exhibiting more violence, foul language and sexuality to susceptible youth. Due to lack of censorship, explicit music lyrics and inappropriate images on music videos are being introduced to impressionable children. There is a lack of control on the internet leading to internet addiction and forces vulnerable adolescents to face cyber bullying. In a variety of mediums not enough censorship is used, which influences impressionable youth to think and behave negatively. The increasing amount of violence, foul language and sexuality available to children on TV is harmful to their development. What was once a time for children to watch TV with content suitable for their age is now directed for an older audience, Family Hour. Statistics show that this is the time most children are watching television with their family members. Despite knowing this, "Since 2000–2001, the amount of sexual content during the Family Hour has increased by 22.1%" (Parents Television Council 55). A poll done later in March of 2007 asked the general public if they thought there was too much sexual content on television. 79% of those that participated in the poll stated that there was too much. ... It is one of that needs vast advancements in research and treatment for addicts to prevent the moral and legal obligations, as well as the severe health ramifications that come along with addiction of these powerful drugs. To legalize drugs would be detrimental to the family unit as well as our youth and have serious health consequences at an alarming rate. James Q. Wilson, author of, "Against the Legalization of Drugs," was the first Senior Fellow at Boston College's Clough Center for the Study of Constitutional Democracy and Distinguished Scholar in its Department of Political Science. In his essay, Wilson portrays his stance on being against legalization of drugs and speaks of figuring out how to win the war on drugs and "not send up the white flag of surrender." Wilson explains the historical aspect of not legalizing heroin in 1972 and health deterioration along with the number of deaths to heroin assisted in decreasing the number of heroin users in the United States. Wilson gives perspectives from the stance of legalization and why it would not have worked and will not work today. Wilson's argument on the detrimental effects of legalizing drugs on our society as a whole would not only have severe effects on our children and young adults, but also our unborn fetuses. Specifically, Wilson's essay describes the detrimental effects of heroin and crack cocaine. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Inequality and Redistribution Inequality and Redistribution Income inequality in America is higher than in any other industrial nation in the world. Many believe this creates serious problems for both United States citizens and its economy. The inequality difference is continually getting larger and worsening these problems. Over the past three decades America's economy has seen continuous growth; but this is accompanied with no increase in purchasing power for poor and middle class citizens. On the other hand, incomes of the richest Americans have dramatically increased, which only furthers the gap between social classes. In 2008, the top one percent of Americans earned over 20% of the national income, which is significantly higher than only 50 years ago. Economists use a strategy called the "Gini Coefficient" to measure the relative equality between nations. Since 1980, the Gini Coefficient for the United States has risen from 0.388 to 0.45. This is a very high rating compared to other egalitarian countries, such as most of Europe and Japan, whose ratings are generally in the high 0.2s and low 0.3s. Wealth inequality is even greater than income inequality, however. "The top 1 percent of Americans own forty–four hundred times as much wealth per person as the bottom 40 percent." This large difference between rich and poor American citizen wealth and income creates numerous problems for the United States. The United States is based on one strong principle belief, democracy. Popular culture, on the other hand, is a form of 'low' culture and is based primarily on marketing, mass production and revenue. Low culture is what is sold to the masses, ergo, low culture equals mass culture. All these terms refer to popular culture, defined in the Oxford Dictionary of Sociology as: '…accessible to ... The question I have posed is a very contentious one, which has been debated by scholars and graduates for some time, with many arguing that popular culture and mass media are ways of brainwashing the 'masses' into the ways of a dominant social order. Others believe that popular culture is a type of 'folk' culture which encompasses the idea of an 'alternative' culture incorporating minority groups, perhaps with subversive values sometimes challenging the dominant control groups, as was scene with the advent of the 'Indie' music scene in the mid nineteen nineties. In this dissertation I aim to uncover whether aforementioned 'subversive values' can be uncovered in popular culture or whether popular culture is really a means by which the masses can direct dominant controlling forces. The main way I will do this is through my research into violent behaviour and the impact that popular culture can have on individuals and groups in society – mainly adolescents and young children – by looking at susceptibility, attraction, reactions and influences. Figures from the internet highlight the capability television can have to influence an individual: 'There are 7.5 violent acts per minute on television in the United States ... Like slavery, sexual trafficking pimps use force to ensure that victims comply as well when being kidnapped from their homes violence is applied in which slavery has the same concept. • 21. Persuasive Essay On Decriminalizing All Drugs "We all have an interest in making sure teens grow up healthy and drug free." – John Walters Would you like to live in a safer, drug–free community? I do and here is how to start: by decriminalizing all drugs! Since Richard Nixon coined the phrase "War on Drugs" in 1971, America has failed miserably to reduce the consumption and traffic of illicit drugs from outside our borders. Although a heavy portion are against decriminalizing drugs because of short–term consequences and health concerns in public communities, Portugal's evident sixteen–year experience with drug decriminalization has proven otherwise with significant, long–term positive outcomes. However, due to the long–lasting and persuasive positive outcomes of decriminalization, it is vital that the U.S. strongly reconsiders the prohibition of all drugs for the health and economic benefit of our communities. Obviously, there will be short–term consequences but also benefits too. Unfortunately, the hype of decriminalizing drugs will cause an increase in the number of users but it is important to note that a considerable amount of those being newly documented are closet junkies finally being revealed. As Dr. Caitlin Hughes, a member of the Drug Policy Modelling Program of the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre puts it, "Portuguese decriminalization did not lead to major increases in drug use. Indeed, evidence indicates reductions in problematic use, drug–related harms and criminal justice overcrowding" (Hughes; Stevens). As this research shows, the predictions on Portugal's well–being after the decriminalization of all drugs were incorrect and the complete opposite occurred–creating healthy and safer communities because of awareness. Bringing our attention back to the increasing number of users within the hype years, public safety is a large concern where communities will have a difficult time adapting to the new policy and becoming accustomed to a new culture and lifestyle. On the contrary, I find a few years of craziness to be minimal in comparison to the long–term achievement that this law intends to achieve. The law prohibits use of these substances and can also result in social stigma. On the other hand, legal drugs consist of substances such as coffee, alcohol, tobacco and over the counter (OTC) drugs, to a high extent these drugs are usually socially accepted and the effects are inconspicuous if used in moderation. Statistics of drug use amongst youth in the UK According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NHI) (2012a), deaths regarding drug use has doubled since the 1980's, furthermore it is stated that there are more illnesses and disabilities from drug abuse than any other avoidable health condition. There are many reasons why young people may choose to indulge in the risky behaviour that is drug use. Individuals may feel pressured by their peers, take this action out of curiosity or use it as a method for dealing with physiological or psychological problems (Better Health, 2012). • 27. Rites Of Passage, Right Or Wrong Rites of Passage, "Right or Wrong"? Throughout history the term "rights of passage" has been used to describe the transition of a person into a new stage of their lives. Rites of passage are relevant in every day life all over the world. Most prominently though, Africa has a large population of people whose groups still practice traditional rites of passage to mark special life achievements. Basically, anything meaningful that happens within their tribe such as the birth of a child, the entrance into adulthood, marriage, death, and so on, are all celebrated with the completion of different customs. The celebration of rituals include dances, songs, and other formalities, however groups across the continent also use varying methods of initiation that most commonly include circumcision in both sexes. For decades, people have questioned whether or not this traditional initiation ritual is necessary and if it could possibly be harmful to young people within certain tribes that practice them. Much controversy surrounds the issue of following tradition even while performing procedures such as female mutilation. How are these rites of passage viewed as beneficial and how are they seen as destructive? What are some alternative rites of passage for these young initiates? A rite of passage, in African culture, is a ceremonial event in which a person enters into a new stage of their life(Haley, McNaughton, Moss, Sallah and Wilson 3). This results in the brain's failure to regulate specific body functions and recognize an individual's emotional responses. In the last century, the amount of marijuana being distributed has significantly increased, further producing exceptionally high percentages of individuals who are currently using it. Researchers say that marijuana has become the #1 addictive drug in America with the potential of producing harmful effects to individuals who consume this substance. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Individuals who consume this substance tend to lose their motor control sensors and full consciousness of their actions. Those who use marijuana experience many unpredictable symptoms, causing the extremity of the effects to fluctuate according to the dosage he/she intakes. According to Christopher Aanstoos article, "Short–term experiential effects include feelings of light–hearted well–being and euphoria; increased sensory sensitivity and appreciation; and greater awareness, creativity, insight, and sense of humor. Negative effects include difficulty with concentration, short– term memory, and motor performance skills; and feeling anxious, tense, socially awkward, and paranoid" (Aanstoos). The depth of the effects all depend on how an individual's body reacts to the stimulant. Furthermore, marijuana contains an addictive toxin known as THC that alters the brain's ability to process information and manage proper body function. The effects from THC vary according to potency, dosage, setting, and the individuals experience and attitude (Aanstoos). The effects that come from using marijuana coordinate with the amount he/she intakes. An individual who consumes more THC is at a higher risk of experiencing longer and stronger effects. This all corresponds with Aanstoos proceeding statement that, "Longer–term experiential effects are more speculative. Many users report that insights remained significant and even life–changing. Negative effects also have been proposed, including amotivational syndrome and an increased tendency to later use other, more dangerous drugs (the "gateway drug" theory)" (Aanstoos). Marijuana not only qualifies as an addictive drug but also as a persuasive one. The "gateway theory" means that after a person is satisfied with the sensation they obtain from marijuana, he/she will potentially go on to try dangerous more abusive drugs. There are more human slaves in the world today then ever recorded in history, according to the UN Global Compact. I. Introduction Everyone close your eyes. I want you to imagine a city near downtown Los Angeles. You see a little girl. Her name is Mary. She is 13 years old with the most beautiful long black hair you have ever seen. She is smiling laughing and skipping down the side walk, on her way to see her friends at the local park. All of a sudden a black car comes up behind her. Mary sees the car and pays no mind to it, merely glancing at it behind her. The car begins to follow her as she turns on the road and Mary realizes that the car might be following her. The car gets faster and faster. She begins to run, fearing for her life. The car speeds up and eventually catches her. A tall man jumps out of the car, grabs her and throws her in.Everything goes black and Mary wakes up to find herself in what seems to look like a holding room with her hands and feet bound. She looks down to see that her clothes have been torn and she is scared for her lie. This is just a glimpse of one of many horrific stories that happens every single day right under our very nose within our cities and local communities. So many believe that human trafficking is just a third world problem. But the truth is, it is just as large here in the United States and in particular here in California. I am speaking to you today in hopes that you will not only recognize human trafficking as a crucial problem but to encourage you to take action against it and bring about awareness.

This issue has been going on for years, but the law has not been changed since the change to twenty–one in 1980. States have become stricter about preventing under–age drinking, but teenagers have no problem getting alcohol. There are many arguments in favor of changing the drinking age back to eighteen. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In summary, research supports the argument that the drinking age should consider the overall perception of how successful undeveloped teens could handle alcohol. Those who want to see the legal drinking age was reduced from twenty–one to eighteen often argue that the legal drinking age in Canada and many European countries are in the middle of adolescence, and argue further that this "lower drinking age has not resulted in the dismantling of the social structure "(Heath 28). As some scientists and social researchers have pointed out, however, drinking habits of young people has changed considerably in recent years as the influence of American advertising and the availability of U.S. products has spread (Heath 231). Although the argument that a lower legal drinking age may be based on data from other countries, we must remember that the culture of alcohol are different in many of these countries and should not serve as a valid basis for a discussion of American matters. Once again, science and research should lead to an argument for reducing or increasing the legal drinking age. Interestingly, on a cultural tone, in relation to the argument against lowering the drinking age, the fact that younger teens are allowed to drink helped researchers suggest that there is an increase in binge drinking, which have been associated with a dramatic increase in harmful and fatal. accidents, ... The conditions that some teenagers face in communities and families may contribute to teen pregnancy. Within the social domain, peers are a big risk factor for teen pregnancy. Some factors include sexual pressure from peers, belief that most peers are sexually active, friends who are sexually active, dating at an early age, and dating someone who is a few years older than you (Southeastern Idaho Public Health, n.d.). Many teenagers feel the pressure from their peers to have sex before they are ready. Those who decide to give into peer pressure often are not informed about safe sexual behavior and therefore may become pregnant. The same goes for those who believe that most of their peers are sexually active. Surveys have shown that many teenagers report a greater percent than actual for the following question: What percent of your peers do you think are sexually active? The pressure that comes from assuming that most of your peers are sexually active can play a huge role in a teenager's decision to participate in early sexual activity. Friends are just as much of a risk factor as family is. If a friend is sexually active, the pressure to fit in and be similar to them starts developing. In these peer situations, it is most likely a teenager's first time having sex. In that case, there is a lack of knowledge that puts teenagers at risk of becoming pregnant. The report recommends the limitation for correctional placements while the government invests in non–residential alternatives diversion programs, and substitute imprisonment for treatment oriented facilities for minor crimes and offenses (Casey, 2011).
