Format: Magazine
I am looking to produce a new indie/rock magazine with other sub genres of indie pop and lo-fi. I
will create a front cover a double page spread as part of a project to launch the new magazine
Shutters I will be producing.
I am currently looking at creating my magazine as a monthly copy on hardback to start off with in
year one and then look into expanding the hardback sales to areas such as Scotland and online
digital download via app store and other distributors. I will be using the typical magazine
dimensions of 8 3⁄8” x 10 7⁄8.
Working Title:
My working title is Shutters although this could potentially change. This is because if feel that
when you find yourself listening to music commonly people like to shut themselves away from
anything else that might be affecting them and can just concentrate on the music they are
listening to. The colours I am currently thinking about are red white and the image background as
it is for my front cover of the magazine. I will have red text for the headline which will be on the
top of the page and spread across the middle of the page. The reason for choosing these colours
are because red represents energy power and passion which is what my magazine is looking to do
as I am looking for new indie record artists who have not yet been exposed to magazine. I have
also chosen white because it is associated with purity which is what Shutters want to be as we
produce an honest interview in our magazine with hard working musicians to get there story
across.
For my masthead I believe the best font style for my magazine will be Lemon milk from
dafonts.com because it is very similar to the style of NME my magazine of inspiration and carries
through the similar genre of the new indie different looking text which my magazine focuses on.
Genre:
As mentioned previously I am looking to produce a new indie/rock monthly magazine which
focuses on upcoming and establishing British indie artists and bands to help them grow their
reputation and get the media attention they deserve through my magazine.
Content:
For my magazine I have been analysing magazines of inspiration like NME and Q to see the
content which they have in their magazines and can attract readers to my new magazine. From
this research I have found out that they include content such as band/artist interviews that have
that `star appeal’ (Richard Dyer) to attract the readers. Not only the star appeal but they also
have exclusive content about upcoming music festivals and gigs that are upcoming and what to
expect from bands and artists the reader may not have heard of before. Interestingly using
secondary research at the mediauk website I have found out that 65.7% of their readers are male
and this relates to adverts inside the magazine such as Dove men care and men’s suit tailors
because their readership is also at 60.9% ABC1 socio economic groups.
Style or Approach:
When I was deciding in which colours I could use for my magazine I got inspiration from a similar
genre of music magazine such as NME and Q. I thought the best colour scheme to follow would
be red white and black. The presentation of the magazine has to have a professional finish to
every page and must convey the conventions of an indie/rock magazine. One I had decided the
colour scheme for my magazine I then created a masthead which had to be eye catching and
represent what the magazine is about to the reader. I did not want to clash the colours I would
be using for the puff promotions and masthead.
The software that I will use to create the magazine pages will be Photoshop CS5. I have decided
to use this software because of the wide variety of tools and manipulation you can do to work
easily. Not only the easy use of software but the professional image the magazine pages will
have from using this software is professional standard.
