Q2 evaluation
1. IN WHAT WAYS DOES
YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
USE, DEVELOP OR
CHALLENGE FORMS AND
CONVENTIONS OF REAL
MEDIA PRODUCTS
2. COLDPLAY- CLOCKS
Coldplay are a British alternative rock band who
sing Clocks.
The song features ambiguous lyrics and therefore
has a sense of mystery behind them.
We liked the idea of this because you could
interpret them in anyway that you wanted.
The song we used is still Coldplay's most
successful song since it won the record of the year
in 2004.
3. ALTERNATIVE ROCK
Alternative rock is a genre of rock music emerged
in the 1980s and was more popular by the 1990s.
Although most people believe that rock music is a
loud, distorted guitar sound, but however it was
more about the music style.
Their lyrics are normally about social concern
things like: drug use, depression, and
environmentalism.
4. CODES AND CONVENTIONS
Codes are signs that create meaning. They can be
divided into technical and symbolic codes.
Technical codes are when the equipment used tells
the story for example, camera work etc.
Symbolic codes are what we see, for example, the
characters actions tells us what is going on.
Music Videos have both technical and symbolic
codes.
Conventions are the way something is done.
Conventions are genre specific. So each music
genre have different conventions.
5. VIDEO
The music video can either be narrative or
performance. We decided to use both a
performance, with Jeff singing and Emma playing
the piano and narrative with the clocks and candles.
We think that both aspects worked well with each
other even though it was predominantly
performance
Coldplay usually use a lot of performance in their
music videos. Therefore, when we used a narrative
aspect we were breaking the codes and
conventions of Coldplay's music videos.
7. DIGIPAK
We decided to have a picture of Jeff on the stage at the back and with songs
down the left hand side. We thought that this would be effective yet simplistic;
it would still attract the audience’s attention. We thought about having another
photo of Jeff on the front cover, we decided maybe the magazine advert. This
way people would be able to recognise the album because they have seen the
magazine advert, also as Jeff is shown mostly in the music video. We thought
about using a clock on the fold in panel, this is because we wanted to promote
our music video more and as soon as they open up the product the clock is the
first thing they see. We thought about having a review page on one of the
inside panels, this would be seen as they open up it up, by putting the reviews
on that page the audience are likely to read them as they see it straight away.
The reviews would be about the album or about the songs featured on the
album. We decided to use a piano on the second inside panel because when
they opened it out more they would see that a piano is used in one of the
songs. A picture of a candle is used underneath the CD holder, this is because
it is similar to a graphic match as the candle is circular and the CD holder
is, also the flame of the candle would be in the same place as circular hole of
the CD.
If we then compare this to Coldplay's digipak it is very different as they have a
lot going on in the front panel but it is still recognizable and the inner panel
with the band members playing instruments is similar to ours with Emma
playing the piano. The second inner panel is also very simple along with the
back cover.
Overall, they are completely different but they are still both effect and are
recognisable.
9. MAGAZINE ADVERT
Our magazine advert is very different to the one of
Coldplay’s. Whereas, ours uses a simple
background, quite simple font, basic information
about the album and and platforms to buy from.
Coldplay's has more going on the background but
they have still used simple font and basic
information about the album.
10. THEORISTS
We break Dyers theory of stereotypes as we
dressed our female character in Black, whereas
stereotypical females wear bright colours, eg. Pink.
We match Andrew Goodwins theory because the
action matches the lyrics. This is shown when we
can see a clock and the lyric is “clock’.
Dyers stars theory is opposed in our video when
the male character is looking at the audience, it
suggests that the audience and the artist are equal.
