Impact of Globalization on Agriculture in Uganda
Impact of Globalization on Agriculture in Uganda
Definition:
Globalization: is a process by which regional economies, societies, and cultures have become
integrated through a global network of communication, transportation, and trade.
Globalization according to Webster's Dictionary, means: "to make worldwide in scope or
application". Globalization can be viewed as the integration of inputs and outputs into global
markets, sharing of information and knowledge, and promulgation of rules governing such
integration
The term is sometimes used to refer specifically to economic globalization: the integration of
national economies into the international economy through trade, foreign direct investment, capital
flows, migration, and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is argued that when liberalization is permitted to work, then producers are likely to move their
production cheaper. Countries like Uganda would attract additional benefits of creating employment
and by reducing the cost of transporting raw coffee, which tends to be bulky and robs the farmer of
additional income.
 Unrealistic expectations in capital movements. In Uganda approximately 50% do not read or
write. The majority farmers are rural–based and live below the poverty line. Such people lack what
it takes to cross national borders to engage in trade because they lack the basic knowledge and skills.
 Weak National Policies: An example of the weak policies is with regard to efforts by government
to liberalize the provision of services even further via the National Agriculture Advisory
Development Services programme (NAADS). This initiative is intended to ultimately commercialise
extension service delivery.
Recommendations.
Generally, globalization may have some positive effects. To enhance some of these positive effects,
renegotiation of terms with the WTO and other trade partners is needed. This will however require
benevolent, patriotic Ugandan technicians who study the WTO protocols. These should be people
who adequately interpret Uganda's reality and help to negotiate appropriately with Uganda's
development partners.
Besides, they should help to develop appropriate policies that meet the requirements of the
renegotiated protocols in ways

Idi Amin Research Paper
The human race is known for the anger and violence that each individual is capable of releasing. A
primal and sometimes carnal instinct embedded deep in almost everyone. But through the centuries,
there have been certain people who have taken their violent urges and released them on a grander
scale scarily imaginable. One such individual came to be known as the butcher of Uganda, Idi Amin.
Raised in the Muslim faith and hailing from the northwestern areas of Uganda known as Koboko,
from a small ethnic tribe known as the Kakwa. The future dictator's exact date of birth is unknown,
but it is estimated that Idi Amin was born around the year 1925. His father, a member of the Kakwa
Tribe, is said to have abandoned their family leaving Amin being ... Show more content on

With the advent of the so–called "economic war", Amin began to systematically drive out
approximately50,000 to 70,000 Asians out of Uganda and took control of dozens of businesses
which were distributed among his supporters and the government. This was the first step in the
spiraling fall of the country's economy which would reach inflation rates of as high as 1000%. Amin
also decided to sever ties with Britain and chose to seek support from Libya and the Soviet

The World Bank And Imf
As a result of the inadequacies of the World Bank and IMF, Uganda today appears to be no better off
today then as they were in the year(s) prior to acquiring the assistance in debt relief in 1998.
According to Ana Eiras; "Despite such a monstrous display of resources, according to the index of
economic freedom, the Bank's money has done nothing to improve the economic freedom in
recipient countries". Erias goes on to make it clear that many of the country's who have received
assistance have seen no change or economic improvement and are just as poor as they were many
years ago. There is a distinct ineffectiveness on the part of the World Bank and IMF to effectively
utilize their plethora of economic intelligence, strategic relationships, and technical and industrial
knowledge to help a country to an improved economic state. Uganda received as much as $650
million in US dollars for the purposes of debt relief back in 1998. The relief was to provide
assistance in several ways to include an educational program, "the purchase and cancellation by
HIPC Trust Fund of outstanding IDA credits" "the payment of debt service by HIPC Trust Fund",
"savings on IDA charges associated with these instruments", (Press Release 1998). In short the
World Bank was to cover as much as half of Uganda's annual debt. They were awarded this because
they had met the "requirements", and Uganda was said to have "the strongest performing economies
in Africa". (Press Release 1998) What was

Comparison Of Imperialism In The UK And Uganda
Have you ever thought much about where you live and how you live? What comes to mind about
what you do in your daily life compared to someone else who lives on a different continent than you
do? Big difference right? The United Kingdom is a very flourished country, with many things that
spark from it, and many goods things that enforce it. However, when it's compared to a country like
Uganda in Africa, there are similarities and difference within both of the two countries that make
them themselves. Since the Berlin conference in Europe, imperialism has become a great deal for
both of these countries, with one benefitting as a developed country, while the other not benefitting,
or to say a developing country. Imperialism– "the exercise of power by a state beyond its borders"–
is much preceding than Europe itself, and has greatly impacted the UK and Uganda. and the
comparison is distinctive yet demonstrative despite their encounter. Because of the Berlin
Conference, imperialism had affected both the UK and Uganda Economically, the experience of
Health/Education, and by population/agriculturally.
The first trait that was distinctive between the UK and Uganda, is the industry of their economy. The
UK is a developed country, and has a much greater GDP than Uganda, almost by 30 times!
According to the CIA World Factbook, the UK's GDP is a skyrocketing "2.619 trillion USD (2016)"
with a GDP per capita "39,899". This indicates that is very high, and people within their society

Role of Human Capital in Economic Development
CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION
a) BACKGROUND
Kenya is one of the less Developed countries that are endowed with relatively good levels of
resources and labor. However, there are still a lot to be done to tap those resources into viable
productivity and industrialization levels. One way of achieving this is by maximizing the use of both
physical and human capital. In or case we shall consider human capital. Human capital, according to
Adam Smith refers to the acquired and useful abilities of all the inhabitants or members of the
society. The acquisition of such talents by the maintenance of the acquirer, during his education,
study or apprenticeship, always costs a real expense, which is a capital fixed and realized, as it were

 To determine whether healthy human capital and other non economic inputs are part of the
determinants of economic growth in east African countries.
e) SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study is seeking to establish the relationship between human capital and economic growth and
development in east Africa. By so doing, we will be able to know with certainty whether human
capital is actually one of the reasons for economic growth in east Africa, in which case the findings
will be used to establish the right proportion of human capital needed to mix with other economic
inputs so as to facilitate sustainable economic development in the region. It also gives an indication

SIZE
If you were to look on the map of Africa and try to find Uganda, you might have trouble finding it
because it 's smaller in size when compared to surrounding countries. Uganda is like a little giant
when matched to some of the other countries surrounding it. Although, the country is small its
population is what makes it big. It was predicted that Uganda's population would reach 47 million
by the year 2025 which says a lot for a country its size. Now, if you ever visit a city in Uganda, like
the Kampala which is the capitol, you would see that the streets are congested with people and since
the cities are so congested scores of people are relocating to other countries where the streets are
less congested and jobs are available. The reason people are flocking to the cities is because it

The Fight Against Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection...
Uganda in the past has been at the forefront of the fight against Human immunodeficiency virus
infection – acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) in Africa and it became one of the
earliest success stories (USAID 2004).
However, the HIV–AIDS prevalence rates have been rising again drastically since 2011.
Uganda now seeks for "Preventive Measures" lessons from other countries that had used it before as
"a learning and reference point" (Monitor Uganda, May 8, 2013). Therefore, the question of interest
in this paper is why are the rates of HIV–AIDS suddenly increasing in Uganda? According to the
2011 AIDS Indicator survey, the HIV–AIDS prevalence rates now stand at 7.3% from the previous
6.4%. The number of people living with HIV–AIDS and its related diseases is currently 1.6 million
from 1.2 million. (Uganda HIV and AIDS Country Progress report, 2013). In this paper, the possible
hypothesis to the question of interest will be best illustrated basing on these reasons as listed below:
Government involvement in the HIV–AIDS campaigns has reduced compared to the past where the
president himself spearheading campaigns against HIV–AIDS
The economic growth rates of the country
The ever growing Ugandan population Before commencing in to the details of the hypothesis, there
is need to have a clearer understanding of the HIV–AIDS epidemic in Uganda in terms of the
history of the disease, preventive and cautious measures taken in the past.

The Importance Of Country Information On Northern Africa
Country Information:
Northern Africa: Algeria– The citizens are living in poverty, but the nation is wealthy due to their
mass amounts of oil. Their economy level is upper middle income rate. Within the country there is
about 18,000 people living with HIV or AIDS. Algeria is willing to direct money towards
healthcare, but it is riddled with poor infrastructure. Its citizens generally favor Western Medicine.
Unfortunately the country faces overpopulation, and is overcrowded in some cities.

transportation links, and few natural resources. There is a sudden spurt of population growth. There
are poor Roads, with no roadside care, and not many laws regarding road safety. Comoros is shifting
their medical knowledge to Western Medicine, but the staff is untrained, and those who are trained
are scarce.
Djibouti– Djibouti has a lower middle income economy that is specialized in trade due to its
location on the red seas. Djibouti is transitioning to Western Medicine, but there is a massive
number of lot of unpaved roads.
Ethiopia– Ethiopia has a low income rate with 15% of the population under poverty line. There is a
lot of knowledge on western medicine, but due to lack of funding Ethiopia also relies on alternative
medicine. Ethiopia has the unsafe roads in the world, with horrible traffic and car accidents, causing

Idi Amin Research Paper
Idi Amin ruled Uganda from 1971 to 1979 during that time a lust for power, crippling paranoia, and
constant threats to his authority turned Amin into an authoritarian leader who ultimately took the
lives of over 300,000 Ugandans. Amin's quest for power, egoism, and corruption was instrumental
in Amin's creation of the Ugandan state during his rule. Amin used common "state building"
techniques such as the social identity theory (SIT) and in/out group hypothesis. Amin used his
Ugandan identity and his poor upbringings to connect with the people of Uganda. Amin also vested
trust in a small number of advisors that he would confide in completely, those people would become
his most important allies. However, this group of advisors ranged from those who would "tell him

was also able to act for the media and the cameras. Behind closed doors Amin would crumble, full
of anger and rage, but when it was time for him to stand in front of the cameras or his people he
could put on a smile and be the charismatic leader his people, and the world, saw him as. This
duality of his personality hid the unhinged leader that he was from his people which helped him
create such a strong state. Furthermore, Amin often lied about the atrocities being committed in
Uganda helping people live in a state of blissful ignorance. Idi Amin was an egotistical paranoid
monster who only entrusted a small number of people, and manipulated a country to follow in his
footsteps. His corruption and quest for power helped him craft Uganda

From the time Idi Amin came to power in Uganda until the time his regime fell, his brutal rule
negatively impacted Uganda in every aspect of its existence. In 1971, Idi Amin along with military
support, ousted Prime Minister Milton Obote while he was out of the country in Singapore attending
a Commonwealth summit meeting with many other leaders of African and European countries. Over
the course of his violent reign, Idi Amin killed between 100,000 and 300,000 of his own people and
doomed the economy with the expulsion of those of Asian nationality. Many of his victims were
killed for no reason, or for a very insignificant action. Amin was in power from 1971 to 1979 and

Not only did Amin harm Uganda by killing a lot of its population, he also was the cause of an
almost complete economic collapse, when, in 1972, he declared an "economic war" on the Asian
population in Uganda. Uganda's economy relied heavily on its Asian population because they ran
most of the manufacturing and trade sectors as well as making up a large portion of the civil service.
Amin's order of expulsion for the Asian population gave them three months to exit Uganda. They
were given British passports and the businesses they left behind were turned over to Amin's
supporters. Amin not only decimated the population of Uganda during his despotic reign but caused
the economy to falter and fail as well. As his reign of terror went on, news of Amin's crimes and
atrocities began surfacing internationally, spurring retaliatory actions from countries all over the
world. The United States as well as the United Kingdom, Japan, France, the Netherlands, and West
Germany played a large role in Uganda's trading by being the largest exporters of their coffee. The
United States exported the most, being responsible for 75% of all the coffee exported by Uganda. In
the beginning stages of Amin's reign, the United States did not do much more than denounce Amin
and the major violations of human rights being committed under him (Nurnberger 71). Through the

centuries old traditions and history. Culture is much like a log cabin, individual logs put together

Before their independence from the British in 1962, the Ugandan Army trained to higher standards
than practiced today. The Ugandan Army earned international admiration during World War I and
World War II. The decline in standards came amid political and economical struggles during the
1960's. After Uganda gained its independence, the military took another turn for the worst. The
morale in all military forces plummeted because British officers retained most command positions.
In 1986 the countries leader vowed to improve the education standards for military recruits, improve
the standards of discipline, and override regional loyalties that slowed the pace of military
improvement. By 1990, there was very little progress made towards those goals. The most recent
notable accomplishment of the military was in 2012 when they were able to capture Caesar Acellam,
a top military leader in the Lord's Resistance Army. The notable Joseph Kony belongs to the Lord's
Resistance Army. The recruitment process is very similar to that of the United States. The Ugandan
military has always been an all–volunteer force, both before and after their independence. In the
recent years, women have been able to enlist, but not hold positions of command. The minimum age
for enlistment is seventeen and the maximum age allowed is twenty–five. All military recruits must
have an education level equivalent to that of a seventh grader. During the 1970's, there was a brief
period where enlistment became mandatory along with the educational requirement suspended. The
contractual requirement is either five or nine years, although this is normally ignored allowing
service members to get out early. According to Flood, "After independence, life for the common
soldier became desperate, and increasingly so in the 1970's and 1980's". (213) Soldiers in today's
Ugandan Army sometimes rely on theft, bribery, and extortion

A Brief Note On Uganda And Uganda Are Neighbours
Introduction:
Kenya and Uganda are neighbours. They are all within East Africa together with Tanzania, Rwanda,
Burundi and South Sudan. Even though they are within the same region; their development status in
agriculture, industrialization, democracy, health, and education economies differ greatly.
Discussion:
Uganda:
Uganda has considerably natural resources. These include fertile soils, regular rainfall, small
deposits of copper, gold, and other minerals, and recently they discovered oil. Agriculture seems to
be the most important sector of the economy, employing almost one third of the work force within
the nation. Coffee also accounts for the major export revenues. The economy in Uganda is
dominated by agriculture and some small industrial sector that depends on imported inputs. The
overall production is hindered by constrains in supply. These include underinvestment in an
agricultural sector that continues to rely on the limited and basic technology. Industrial
developments and growth are delayed or hindered by high costs which are caused by poor facilities,
low levels of private investments, and the depreciation of the Ugandan shilling.
Since the year 1986, the Ugandan government with the help of foreign donors and agencies – has
been on the pathway to rehabilitate and stabilize their economic growth by undertaking currency
reforms. The Ugandan government has also raised the production prices on exportation of crops,
increasing prices on petroleum products and trying

Uganda Marketing Essay
When marketing to any foreign country a marketer must evaluate the population, worker shortage,
age range, immigration, geography as well as cultural implications such as culture, values, rituals,
history, technology, religion, school, government, language (symbols), beliefs, and cultural
sensitivity (Cateora 98–126). However, the marketing implications between a country whose
population is stable, versus one whose population is increasing rapidly, differ vastly. When looking
at a country such as Uganda, the marketer will first notice it's extremely fast growing population. A
rapid population indicates Uganda has poor literacy and education levels, has many unskilled

Researching is important when marketing in any country, even in one where they have a stable
population. Though cultures differ from country to country, society tends to run much differently in
a country whose population is stable than unstable. For instance, Germany does not struggle
economically. In fact, they have the largest European economy (Business Culture). Thus, the
marketing activities are going to differ greatly than one in Uganda. First, "Germany has one of the
world's highest levels of education", meaning many of its workers are skilled and businesses do not
have to invest as much into training and development (Business Culture). Moreover, a higher
education level means marketers can more easily communicate with its consumers. They have the
capability of understanding text and complex concepts. Likewise, when promoting, consumers are
likely to demand highly detailed information so they can make educated decisions. Infrastructure
between stable Germany and unstable Uganda vastly differ. Comparatively, Germany has more
elaborate modes of transportation such as planes, railways, cars making distribution more efficient
and reliable. Products and packaging vary as well. In Germany, consumers are interested in products
the fit their desires not just needs. Likewise, packaging is an important aspect to consumer
purchasing. A package that does not appeal to the eyes of the consumer or does not provide enough

The current conditions.
Recently, Uganda's extent of debt shows significant improvement, but not nearly enough for Uganda
to become financially stable in the near future. PR Newswire corroborates this by stating "poverty
levels declined in the region, but remain the highest in the world" (Food Insecurity and Poverty Pose
Major Challenge). This is extremely detrimental to Uganda right now because lack of wealth
prevents the country from prospering economically, becoming technologically advanced, and
reducing the rates of malnutrition. Numerous factors resulting from malnutrition effects contribute
to these monumental poverty levels including health care, the purchasing of nutrition groups, and
the missed economic opportunities. Unlike poverty levels, hunger and malnutrition rates remain
consistently low, showing little to no improvement. Some sources even believe the rates are slowly
increasing, explaining that "despite sustained economic growth and poverty reduction, the
proportion of the population that is food insecure increased from 19 percent in 1992 to 21 percent in
2007." ("Uganda: Nutrition Profile") This validates that poverty and food security levels are
unrelated and "malnutrition exists in both wealthy and poor households." ("Economic Development

food or agriculture in the developing world of Africa are poverty, environment, and health.
Poverty is a serious issue. The hungrier person is, the less productive he or she can be. Children who
are bored in hungry mother are more likely suffering from birth weight. People are not hungry due
to lack of food, rather they are hungry and do not have the money to pay for it and the houses they

believe that this is such a big deal because diseases killing millions of people leaving families to

afford it because when more people are catching disease there is more effort to cure people instead
of improving the economy. The reason that there is a water problem in Uganda is because many

The National Bird Of Uganda
Uganda is in east–central Africa. Its capital is Kampala. The flag of Uganda is very different from
ours in America but the flag consists of six equal horizontal strips, black, yellow, red repeating from
the top to bottom. At the center is a white circle that has a crested crane which is the national bird of
Uganda. They even have a anthem which goes like this, "O Uganda! May God Uphold Thee". Some
important holidays in Uganda are New Year's Day, Labor Day, Independence Day, Christmas Day,
Boxing Day, Easter Day, and more. It's very short and simple if you ask me. But any who, their

They have different people that make up different dances, so the creativity of the dances is great to
see in different traditions. The most popular, recognizable dance would be the Kiganda, where the
performers move only their lower bodies to the drum beat. The dance is a pretty trick dance but
many people catch on and turns it into whatever they would like to make it. The dance has many
different faces but the known one is performed for the Baganda King. The dances tie into the
religion of the people who live in Uganda. Over four–fifths of Ugandans are Christians, either
Protestant or Catholic. They are strong in their faith and traditional beliefs. Other than praying to
God, Christians and Muslims, people also consult a local oracle/healer. Around 10% are Muslims, a
legacy of the Arab traders who traveled to Uganda in the 19th century. Many Ugandans prayed and
praised if they need food or clothes.

Lord's Resistance Army
Over 1.8 million people in Northern Uganda have been displaced, in fear of attacks from the Lord's
Resistance Army, into internally displaced people's camps. This extremist group has been causing
havoc in Northern Uganda by ransacking villages, kidnapping children, and brutally killing innocent
people. Their violent acts are fueled by their radical religious beliefs. The notorious Joseph Kony
founded the Lord's Resistance Army, also know as LRA, in 1986, with the intentions of creating a
new government based on the Ten Commandments. Since 1986, he has created a powerful army of
almost 3,000 soldiers, most of them who are children. They specifically target the Acholi people, an

The group's effects on the region are prevalent and easily noticeable, but it is important to consider
the causes in order to really understand the issue. Uganda's unstable, harsh rulers, such as Idi Amin
and Milton Obote, have caused many ethnic groups, like the Acholi, serious pain and oppression.
Once this hatred toward the government is paired with radical Christian ideas, the LRA is going to
cause a lot of damage through heinous actions that effect a swarm of people. The Lord's Resistance
Army's power was infinite because did not face a lot of opposition within Uganda, and with outside
sources, such as Sudan supporting it, it was able to be self–sufficient. Today, Uganda continues to
face the harsh rebels, but since a viral internet campaign called "Kony 2012", the awareness for the
issue amongst the rest of the world increased dramatically. Even though the campaign itself ended
up being a flop, it raised concern and the Ugandan government made a huge push to combat the
issue. Although Kony has not been caught, it is estimated that he now only has several hundred
fighters, all of whom live in the bush and do not attack villages as often. There is still a lot of
progress to be made, especially with helping the families recover from their losses, but there has
been a large wave of aid organizations who have been working towards mending the wound in
Northern Uganda. In the history of the conflict, the world

Our prosecution team is charging the President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, with human rights
abuses, corruption and war crimes. The actions of Yoweri Museveni have had a vast negative effect
on Uganda and its neighboring nations. Countless numbers of Ugandans have already suffered under

purging these companies from Uganda is going to need to be the first step. Uganda has also illegally

Sustainable Tourism In Ugand Principles Of Sustainable...
1. Introduction
Sustainable tourism is a very important element today because it not only meets the needs of the
present but also protecting and increasing opportunities of destinations for the future. Uganda (M.
Semakula M. Kiwanuka, 2017) is a country located in east–central Africa, which has diverse
ecosystems such as rainforest jungles, high volcanic mountains on the border or the Albert Nile
River swamps. However, for many years Uganda has stagnated progress and development due to
political problems, environmental degradation and the spread of AIDS epidemic. By the beginning
of the 21st century, Uganda has taken new steps in political stability and gradually resolved its
remaining problems and became Africa's fastest growing economy. This paper is going to discuss
about the key issues and challenges in managing Uganda in term of two principles of sustainable
development (responsibility and responsible citizenship) in context to sustainable host communities
and collaborative partnerships.

issues in Uganda are deforestation and disappearance of some wildlife. Deforestation is an alarming

increasing the amount spent within the domestic energy market, as well as create thousands of jobs

To What Extent Were The Social Policies Of The Idi Amin...
To what extent were the social policies of the Idi Amin administration a detrimental response to
Uganda's colonial past? This is the question that this essay endeavors to answer as it scrutinizes the
social policies issued by Idi Amin Dada's administration throughout his eight year long reign over
Uganda. This essay will analyze the events of Idi Amin's rule from 1971 to 1979 as a response to the
decade prior to Uganda's independence in 1962 and the interim period between them from 1962 to
1971. It is made apparent that Idi Amin's response to the issues within his society were by in large
fueled by the lingering distaste he had for the effects that British involvement in Ugandan affairs
had left on the nation. The British introduced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These origins stemmed from the late 19th century to the early 20th century when the British first
began to colonize Uganda with the help of Asians but didn't intensify until the fifties when classism
and racism became a growing issue. These concerns would grow potentially destructive in the
sixties when Britain worked alongside Idi Amin to overthrow Milton Obote and then a reality in the
70's when these issues were addressed with severity. Links between Idi Amin's ruthless social
policies and Uganda's colonial past became apparently negative which posed the query, to what
extent were these social policies a detrimental response? The focus of this piece is to illustrate the
extent to which Idi Amin's social policies, issued in varying degree from 1971 to 1979, served as an
overwhelmingly detrimental and negative response to a time when Britain ceased greater control
and influence over Uganda. It is noteworthy because it provides an answer and origin to a nation
that endured a dictatorship with a lack of ethical and substantial social reform for nearly a decade.
Instead a subservient military overtook the Ugandan parliament in an attempt to force a self–
interested agenda upon its diverse population. The question to investigate then becomes, "to what
extent were the social policies of the Idi Amin administration a detrimental response to Uganda's
colonial past?"

Uganda
1. Historical background The country known as Uganda was once a British colony just like the
majority of its neighbors in East Africa. It was initially intruded into by the Arab traders led by
Speke and the British explorers led by Stanley in 1862 and 1875 respectively. They both paid
homage to Mutesa who was the King (kabaka) of the Buganda. Uganda remained predominantly
under the colony of the British until 1962 when they were granted internal self government by
Britain (History World, 2011).

Malaria is another disease that is predominant as well as the water borne diseases. Some of the most
emerging and re–emerging agents of the waterborne diseases are; Cholera which is caused by the

characterized by watery stool. Dysentery which is caused by Escherichia Coli. Typhoid that is

Gastroenteritis diseases caused by Giardia and Cryptosporodia and some species of hepatitis are also
known to be caused by water (CDC, 2011). These disease causing agents find their way into the
human body through infected water that people from the poorer communities in Uganda use and

curb the problem is boiling of water. This is the cheapest option since the government cannot afford

Imperialism In Uganda
Uganda Throughout the continent of Africa, a majority of the territories experienced colonization.
Several nations, specifically Uganda, were placed under the rule of Great Britain. Uganda, an East
African country surrounded by the Great Lakes of Africa, was one of the last parts of the continent
to be reached by outsiders. Colonization in Uganda has brought many new customs and religion to
the land and people.
Prior to colonization, the land of Uganda was scarcely inhabited by humans. Between the 14th and
16th centuries, Nilotic speakers, a language originating around the Nile River, migrated south from
Sudan. Over the two hundred years, they had established dominance over the farmers who were

A key reform promoted by the IMF and World Bank was the restructuring of Uganda's taxation
regime. One of the intentions was to lower the dependence on trade taxes, which reduced incentives
for production, and to rely instead on indirect taxes on goods and services. Indirect taxes provided
an average of 79.8 percent of total revenue between 1990–1998. Taxes on income and profits have
steadily increased from 9.8 percent of total revenue in 1989 to 15.2 percent in 1998. Yet, of total
taxes, about 50 percent still emanates from indirect taxes on only 4 products–petroleum, cigarettes,
beer, and soft drinks. In fact, Uganda's tax revenue to GDP ratio is fifty percent below the African

Idi Amin rose to power in 1971 through a violent military coup. Amin and his army successfully
overthrew Uganda's former president Milton Obote with the foreign aid from both the British and

to his personal bank account and from the Israelis he received arms. Amin's success at gaining and
holding power was largely based on foreign assistance. "Amin's regime survived as long as it did in

The economic embargo that was instituted as well as the negative perception around Amin caused
Uganda to fail economically and to have no foreign powers want to help because they did not want

Uganda as a place that was uncivilized and that was not worth any ones time. Through all Amin's
missteps and failures his inability to run a successful country without foreign support was his
biggest weakness. He was not able to have good relations with countries either because of rash
decisions which offended those countries or because of bad public image led to a country to weak to

remained in office from 1971–1979. (Boddy–Evans) Idi Amin's time in office was seen as the
bloodiest times in his countries history. Like most dictators he ruled with fear. His crimes against
humanity are well documented and anything that isn't is still spread through word of mouth. It was
these erratic actions that lead to the downfall of the Ugandan economy. (Idi Amin Killer File)
Obote, the man Amin helped into power prior to his own coup, had a positive effect on the economy.
Obote declared a strong national economy with little foreign dependence. Unlike Amin's
administration, these types of statements were not propaganda. In the years of Obote's financial

the country at a negative 0.6% GDP. (Luganda)

expelling 60,000 Asians from Uganda is still unclear. There are many theories put forth, but they
remain mere speculation. As a result of Idi Amin's erratic behavior, jingoism, and ruthlessness,
Uganda's economic ultimately suffered to this day from this act. In 1971, President Idi Amin

Poverty Levels In Uganda
In the past, Uganda has constantly struggled with some of the highest poverty and hunger levels in
the world. Recently, poverty levels have shown significant improvement, but not nearly enough for
Uganda to become financially stable in the near future. Many sources agree with this by stating,
"Poverty levels declined in the region, but remain the highest in the world." ("Food Insecurity and
Poverty Pose Major Challenge") This is extremely detrimental to Uganda right now because lack of
wealth prevents the country from prospering economically, becoming technologically advanced, and
reducing the rates of malnutrition. Numerous factors resulting from malnutrition effects contribute
to these monumental poverty levels including health care, the purchasing of nutrition groups, and
the missed economic opportunities. Unlike poverty levels, hunger and malnutrition rates remain
consistently low, showing little to no improvement. Some sources even believe the rates are slowly
increasing, explaining that "despite sustained economic growth and poverty reduction, the
proportion of the population that is food insecure increased from 19 percent in 1992 to 21 percent in
2007." ("Uganda: Nutrition Profile") This validates that poverty and food security levels are
unrelated and "malnutrition exists in both wealthy and poor households." ("Economic Development
and Nutrition Fact Sheet") Therefore, although these rates are unparalleled, Uganda is beginning to

What Would Our World Look Like Today If Globalization Did...
What would our world look like today if globalization did not exist? The answer is that it would
look quite different from what we are used to today. Many of the products used every day by
Americans have been made available and sold to us due to globalization. Globalization is the
process or act in which values, technologies, and businesses spread internationally; connecting,
sharing ideas and technologies and moving from their domestic roots to establish a worldwide
influence as they expand their sources of production and customer base beyond their home
boundaries. This practice has been happening since World War II, continuing to better the global
economy, while sometimes ruining countries at the same time. Dominant countries, otherwise
known as "core countries," like the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom benefit more
from globalization because they can dominate the trade markets, control advanced technologies, and
maintain high levels of productivity. On the contrary, peripheral countries like Uganda are
recognized by their dependent and disadvantageous trade links, obsolescent technologies, and
undeveloped economies. While there are many cons to why globalization can be bad for both core
and peripheral countries, as you will see in this essay, the pros outweigh the cons. The world we
know today is vastly improved due to globalization. Globalization has helped to promote advanced
and more inclusive education in countries where education of the general

Political and economic development in Uganda based on these terms provides a strong case for the
relationship between the two. The lack of political development in Uganda since independence from
Britain in 1962 has hindered economic development and it was not until recent political stability that
Uganda has been able to experience any sort of economic development.
To understand the political development in Uganda, it is important to start shortly before 1962 to
examine the political atmosphere of independence. Under the colonial system, Uganda was a
protectorate, meaning that land rights of Africans were respected, despite the commonplace of
forced labor and high taxes. In 1961 Uganda was granted self–rule before gaining full independence
in 1962. With the granting of self–rule, three major political parties formed, the Uganda People's
Congress (UPC), the Democratic Party (DP) and the Kabaka Yekka (KY). The main platform of the
UPC was nationalist and the party strived to unite all Ugandans despite ethnic differences. The KY
was mainly an ethnic party consisting of the Baganda people who were the most favored under
British rule. An alliance between the UPC and KY gave them more collective strength than the DP
and increased the political power of Milton Obote.
At independence in 1962, Obote, of the UPC, was appointed Prime

The Economic Development Of Kenya
Kenya is the regional leader in East Africa and this position is expected to be a constant over time.
The economy is fairly diversified with a strong and well developed services sector. The financial
services industry in particular is well developed and established, moreso the country is considered
East and Central Africa's hub for financial services.
Kenya is also the preferred entry point for companies wishing to expand further in the region.
Moreover, East Africa's largest economy is one of the most innovative on the African continent,
which bodes well for future economic development.
The country is a key investor within the East African commmunity, while the largest chunk of
intraregional trade is due to Kenya. However, economic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The country has been able to take advantage of the region's positive prospects and should continue
to do so in coming years. The country has good prospects for economic growth and foreign direct
investment (FDI), import cover levels are comfortable, and political risk is relatively low.
Tanzania's notable economic expansion in recent years has been facilitated by open market policies
related to global commerce. The financial sector and the investment framework are relatively well
developed for the region. However, these strengths are offset by weak socioeconomic indicators,
structurally large current account and budgetdeficits, and rising debt levels.
Growth in the agricultural sector has been driven by increased production of major food crops such
as maize, sorghum and cassava, but the sector's performance remains below potential. In turn, the
services and industrial sectors have shown strong growth. The nascent banking sector and expanding
telecommunications sector are key drivers behind services growth, while construction, electricity
generation, manufacturing and mining are salient sub–sectors in industrial activity. Looking ahead,
the banking and telecommunication sectors will continue to support services growth, while
increased electricity generation capacity will benefit the expansion of the manufacturing

Examine reasons for changes in pattern of world development
Examine reasons for recent changes in patterns of World development. In the 1970's Africa seemed
poised to take off developmentally speaking while S.America and especially Asia were seen with
extreme pessimism. Since then patterns have been reversed; Asia led by economies such as India
have introduced new nomenclature such as newly and recently industrialising countries while S.
America has followed close behind. Today it is Africa or more precisely Sub–Saharran Africa which
has stagnated developmentally or in some cases even reversed in some countries. Thios can be seen
by looking at two countries – India and Uganda. In 1960 Uganda had a GDP/cap of $789 and a life
expectancy of 44 years. India in comparrison was $654 and 42 years; ... Show more content on

Between 1998 and 2002 production rose by 14% while earnings decreased by 31%! These economic
factors are a major reason for a lack of development in affected areas. Asia and S. America were less
adversely affects due to their establishment of trading blocs which helped overcome barriers and
fully take part in the globalised economy. In much of Africa however this was held up by a lack of
integration into the digital infrastructure. Brandt predicted in 1980 that Africa would be left behind
by the 'digital divide' and most countries of East/Southern Africa were only connected to the
terrestrial broadband cable between 2007 and 2010. In 2009 to put 25 agents on the phone in Kenya
for a month cost $17000 while in India it cost just $600. Despite the impacts of economic factors
however the biggest impacts on modern patterns of world development have been political, social
and cultural. President Museveni of Uganda likened the advent of African independence as giving
a six year old the keys to the gun and liquor cabinets and then being surprised at what happened
next. The biggest factors in Africa slipping behind developmentally has been political instability
often underpinned by tribalism. In a country such as Botswana which has escaped these GDP/cap is
over $14000 each year. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo which is still war torn and lacking
stable government it is $300 per year. It is impossible to develop in a state of civil war; in the

Impact Of Globalization On Agriculture In Uganda

  • 1. Impact of Globalization on Agriculture in Uganda Impact of Globalization on Agriculture in Uganda Definition: Globalization: is a process by which regional economies, societies, and cultures have become integrated through a global network of communication, transportation, and trade. Globalization according to Webster's Dictionary, means: "to make worldwide in scope or application". Globalization can be viewed as the integration of inputs and outputs into global markets, sharing of information and knowledge, and promulgation of rules governing such integration The term is sometimes used to refer specifically to economic globalization: the integration of national economies into the international economy through trade, foreign direct investment, capital flows, migration, and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is argued that when liberalization is permitted to work, then producers are likely to move their production cheaper. Countries like Uganda would attract additional benefits of creating employment and by reducing the cost of transporting raw coffee, which tends to be bulky and robs the farmer of additional income.  Unrealistic expectations in capital movements. In Uganda approximately 50% do not read or write. The majority farmers are rural–based and live below the poverty line. Such people lack what it takes to cross national borders to engage in trade because they lack the basic knowledge and skills.  Weak National Policies: An example of the weak policies is with regard to efforts by government to liberalize the provision of services even further via the National Agriculture Advisory Development Services programme (NAADS). This initiative is intended to ultimately commercialise extension service delivery. Recommendations. Generally, globalization may have some positive effects. To enhance some of these positive effects, renegotiation of terms with the WTO and other trade partners is needed. This will however require benevolent, patriotic Ugandan technicians who study the WTO protocols. These should be people who adequately interpret Uganda's reality and help to negotiate appropriately with Uganda's development partners. Besides, they should help to develop appropriate policies that meet the requirements of the renegotiated protocols in ways

A primal and sometimes carnal instinct embedded deep in almost everyone. But through the centuries, there have been certain people who have taken their violent urges and released them on a grander scale scarily imaginable. One such individual came to be known as the butcher of Uganda, Idi Amin. Raised in the Muslim faith and hailing from the northwestern areas of Uganda known as Koboko, from a small ethnic tribe known as the Kakwa. • 10. The World Bank And Imf As a result of the inadequacies of the World Bank and IMF, Uganda today appears to be no better off today then as they were in the year(s) prior to acquiring the assistance in debt relief in 1998. According to Ana Eiras; "Despite such a monstrous display of resources, according to the index of economic freedom, the Bank's money has done nothing to improve the economic freedom in recipient countries". Erias goes on to make it clear that many of the country's who have received assistance have seen no change or economic improvement and are just as poor as they were many years ago. There is a distinct ineffectiveness on the part of the World Bank and IMF to effectively utilize their plethora of economic intelligence, strategic relationships, and technical and industrial knowledge to help a country to an improved economic state. Uganda received as much as $650 million in US dollars for the purposes of debt relief back in 1998. The relief was to provide assistance in several ways to include an educational program, "the purchase and cancellation by HIPC Trust Fund of outstanding IDA credits" "the payment of debt service by HIPC Trust Fund", "savings on IDA charges associated with these instruments", (Press Release 1998). In short the World Bank was to cover as much as half of Uganda's annual debt. They were awarded this because they had met the "requirements", and Uganda was said to have "the strongest performing economies in Africa". (Press Release 1998) What was ... • 14. Comparison Of Imperialism In The UK And Uganda Have you ever thought much about where you live and how you live? What comes to mind about what you do in your daily life compared to someone else who lives on a different continent than you do? Big difference right? The United Kingdom is a very flourished country, with many things that spark from it, and many goods things that enforce it. However, when it's compared to a country like Uganda in Africa, there are similarities and difference within both of the two countries that make them themselves. Since the Berlin conference in Europe, imperialism has become a great deal for both of these countries, with one benefitting as a developed country, while the other not benefitting, or to say a developing country. Imperialism– "the exercise of power by a state beyond its borders"– is much preceding than Europe itself, and has greatly impacted the UK and Uganda. and the comparison is distinctive yet demonstrative despite their encounter. Because of the Berlin Conference, imperialism had affected both the UK and Uganda Economically, the experience of Health/Education, and by population/agriculturally. The first trait that was distinctive between the UK and Uganda, is the industry of their economy. The UK is a developed country, and has a much greater GDP than Uganda, almost by 30 times! According to the CIA World Factbook, the UK's GDP is a skyrocketing "2.619 trillion USD (2016)" with a GDP per capita "39,899". This indicates that is very high, and people within their society ... Uganda now seeks for "Preventive Measures" lessons from other countries that had used it before as "a learning and reference point" (Monitor Uganda, May 8, 2013). Therefore, the question of interest in this paper is why are the rates of HIV–AIDS suddenly increasing in Uganda? According to the 2011 AIDS Indicator survey, the HIV–AIDS prevalence rates now stand at 7.3% from the previous 6.4%. The number of people living with HIV–AIDS and its related diseases is currently 1.6 million from 1.2 million. (Uganda HIV and AIDS Country Progress report, 2013). In this paper, the possible hypothesis to the question of interest will be best illustrated basing on these reasons as listed below: Government involvement in the HIV–AIDS campaigns has reduced compared to the past where the president himself spearheading campaigns against HIV–AIDS The economic growth rates of the country The ever growing Ugandan population Before commencing in to the details of the hypothesis, there is need to have a clearer understanding of the HIV–AIDS epidemic in Uganda in terms of the history of the disease, preventive and cautious measures taken in the past. Idi Amin Research Paper Idi Amin ruled Uganda from 1971 to 1979 during that time a lust for power, crippling paranoia, and constant threats to his authority turned Amin into an authoritarian leader who ultimately took the lives of over 300,000 Ugandans. Amin's quest for power, egoism, and corruption was instrumental in Amin's creation of the Ugandan state during his rule. Amin used common "state building" techniques such as the social identity theory (SIT) and in/out group hypothesis. Amin used his Ugandan identity and his poor upbringings to connect with the people of Uganda. Amin also vested trust in a small number of advisors that he would confide in completely, those people would become his most important allies. This duality of his personality hid the unhinged leader that he was from his people which helped him create such a strong state. Furthermore, Amin often lied about the atrocities being committed in Uganda helping people live in a state of blissful ignorance. From the time Idi Amin came to power in Uganda until the time his regime fell, his brutal rule negatively impacted Uganda in every aspect of its existence. In 1971, Idi Amin along with military support, ousted Prime Minister Milton Obote while he was out of the country in Singapore attending a Commonwealth summit meeting with many other leaders of African and European countries. Over the course of his violent reign, Idi Amin killed between 100,000 and 300,000 of his own people and doomed the economy with the expulsion of those of Asian nationality. Many of his victims were killed for no reason, or for a very insignificant action. Amin was in power from 1971 to 1979 and proved early into his dictatorship that he was very powerful. Only one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not only did Amin harm Uganda by killing a lot of its population, he also was the cause of an almost complete economic collapse, when, in 1972, he declared an "economic war" on the Asian population in Uganda. Uganda's economy relied heavily on its Asian population because they ran most of the manufacturing and trade sectors as well as making up a large portion of the civil service. Amin's order of expulsion for the Asian population gave them three months to exit Uganda. They were given British passports and the businesses they left behind were turned over to Amin's supporters. Amin not only decimated the population of Uganda during his despotic reign but caused the economy to falter and fail as well. As his reign of terror went on, news of Amin's crimes and atrocities began surfacing internationally, spurring retaliatory actions from countries all over the world. The United States as well as the United Kingdom, Japan, France, the Netherlands, and West Germany played a large role in Uganda's trading by being the largest exporters of their coffee. The United States exported the most, being responsible for 75% of all the coffee exported by Uganda. Although independence brought change, Uganda struggles as it tries to find its place on the long list of countries with a successful economy. The everyday life of Uganda show its centuries old traditions and history. Culture is much like a log cabin, individual logs put together make the cabin complete. The individual pieces alone are important but when they are together, they create something unique. The individual details in culture include the languages spoken, the daily customs, the multiple religions, the type of government, social classes if existent, history of the country, and geographical location. The Ugandan Army earned international admiration during World War I and World War II. The decline in standards came amid political and economical struggles during the 1960's. After Uganda gained its independence, the military took another turn for the worst. The morale in all military forces plummeted because British officers retained most command positions. In 1986 the countries leader vowed to improve the education standards for military recruits, improve the standards of discipline, and override regional loyalties that slowed the pace of military improvement. By 1990, there was very little progress made towards those goals. The most recent notable accomplishment of the military was in 2012 when they were able to capture Caesar Acellam, a top military leader in the Lord's Resistance Army. The notable Joseph Kony belongs to the Lord's Resistance Army. The recruitment process is very similar to that of the United States. The Ugandan military has always been an all–volunteer force, both before and after their independence. In the recent years, women have been able to enlist, but not hold positions of command. The minimum age for enlistment is seventeen and the maximum age allowed is twenty–five. All military recruits must have an education level equivalent to that of a seventh grader. During the 1970's, there was a brief period where enlistment became mandatory along with the educational requirement suspended. The contractual requirement is either five or nine years, although this is normally ignored allowing service members to get out early. According to Flood, "After independence, life for the common soldier became desperate, and increasingly so in the 1970's and 1980's". Even though they are within the same region; their development status in agriculture, industrialization, democracy, health, and education economies differ greatly. Discussion: Uganda: Uganda has considerably natural resources. These include fertile soils, regular rainfall, small deposits of copper, gold, and other minerals, and recently they discovered oil. Agriculture seems to be the most important sector of the economy, employing almost one third of the work force within the nation. Coffee also accounts for the major export revenues. The economy in Uganda is dominated by agriculture and some small industrial sector that depends on imported inputs. The overall production is hindered by constrains in supply. These include underinvestment in an agricultural sector that continues to rely on the limited and basic technology. Industrial developments and growth are delayed or hindered by high costs which are caused by poor facilities, low levels of private investments, and the depreciation of the Ugandan shilling. Since the year 1986, the Ugandan government with the help of foreign donors and agencies – has been on the pathway to rehabilitate and stabilize their economic growth by undertaking currency reforms. First, "Germany has one of the world's highest levels of education", meaning many of its workers are skilled and businesses do not have to invest as much into training and development (Business Culture). This is extremely detrimental to Uganda right now because lack of wealth prevents the country from prospering economically, becoming technologically advanced, and reducing the rates of malnutrition. Numerous factors resulting from malnutrition effects contribute to these monumental poverty levels including health care, the purchasing of nutrition groups, and the missed economic opportunities. Unlike poverty levels, hunger and malnutrition rates remain consistently low, showing little to no improvement. Currently within Uganda, and the greater Eastern African Community, there exists an energy crisis that is heavily affecting the economic stability within the region. (energyaccessreview, esmap) Comparatively, Uganda's average electrification rate is 4%, while Sub–Saharan Africa's electrification rate is 31% and the average electrification rate worldwide is 81%.(iea.org) Being that Uganda is so far behind the rest of the world in terms of energy production and distribution to its people, President Museveni and his counsel have decided to make the production of green energy one of their top priorities.(newvision) The goal as it stands, is to ultimately increase the ... (cnbcafrica, worldbank) Despite all of the money that Uganda is able to make by exporting coffee, petroleum, and other resources, it is still in $7 billion worth of debt, and the number only continues to grow. Because of the comparably large debt that Uganda has accumulated, members of the parliament have expressed concerns over the financial budget, and future spending.(theeastafrican) In Uganda today, $1.2 billion of refined petroleum is imported every year in order to power the nation.(mit) This cost is by far the largest portion of Ugandan import spending, and successfully replacing the country's reliance on petroleum with domestic green energy will ultimately decrease their debt and create a healthier economy within Uganda. Initially, such programs may drain money from the government's budget and possibly put the country into further debt, but they very quickly cut down on the amount spent annually on importing such large amounts of fossil fuels and increasing the amount spent within the domestic energy market, as well as create thousands of jobs for workers, engineers, and business people. At the moment, the creation of large power plants opens up the opportunity for many different organizations to establish themselves, whether they be private businesses, community based organizations, or government initiatives, and all of these will create more jobs in the marketplace and create competition ... • 106. To What Extent Were The Social Policies Of The Idi Amin... To what extent were the social policies of the Idi Amin administration a detrimental response to Uganda's colonial past? This is the question that this essay endeavors to answer as it scrutinizes the social policies issued by Idi Amin Dada's administration throughout his eight year long reign over Uganda. This essay will analyze the events of Idi Amin's rule from 1971 to 1979 as a response to the decade prior to Uganda's independence in 1962 and the interim period between them from 1962 to 1971. It is made apparent that Idi Amin's response to the issues within his society were by in large fueled by the lingering distaste he had for the effects that British involvement in Ugandan affairs had left on the nation. These origins stemmed from the late 19th century to the early 20th century when the British first began to colonize Uganda with the help of Asians but didn't intensify until the fifties when classism and racism became a growing issue. These concerns would grow potentially destructive in the sixties when Britain worked alongside Idi Amin to overthrow Milton Obote and then a reality in the 70's when these issues were addressed with severity. Links between Idi Amin's ruthless social policies and Uganda's colonial past became apparently negative which posed the query, to what extent were these social policies a detrimental response? The focus of this piece is to illustrate the extent to which Idi Amin's social policies, issued in varying degree from 1971 to 1979, served as an overwhelmingly detrimental and negative response to a time when Britain ceased greater control and influence over Uganda. It is noteworthy because it provides an answer and origin to a nation that endured a dictatorship with a lack of ethical and substantial social reform for nearly a decade. Instead a subservient military overtook the Ugandan parliament in an attempt to force a self– interested agenda upon its diverse population. The question to investigate then becomes, "to what extent were the social policies of the Idi Amin administration a detrimental response to Uganda's colonial past?" It was initially intruded into by the Arab traders led by Speke and the British explorers led by Stanley in 1862 and 1875 respectively. They both paid homage to Mutesa who was the King (kabaka) of the Buganda. Uganda remained predominantly under the colony of the British until 1962 when they were granted internal self government by Britain (History World, 2011). Amin and his army successfully overthrew Uganda's former president Milton Obote with the foreign aid from both the British and Israeli Government. From the British Amin received aid through large amounts of money being sent to his personal bank account and from the Israelis he received arms. Amin's success at gaining and holding power was largely based on foreign assistance. "Amin's regime survived as long as it did in part because it always found one or another imperialist power to patronise it" (Fall of Idi Amin 1). Recently, poverty levels have shown significant improvement, but not nearly enough for Uganda to become financially stable in the near future. Many sources agree with this by stating, "Poverty levels declined in the region, but remain the highest in the world." ("Food Insecurity and Poverty Pose Major Challenge") This is extremely detrimental to Uganda right now because lack of wealth prevents the country from prospering economically, becoming technologically advanced, and reducing the rates of malnutrition. Numerous factors resulting from malnutrition effects contribute to these monumental poverty levels including health care, the purchasing of nutrition groups, and the missed economic opportunities. Unlike poverty levels, hunger and malnutrition rates remain consistently low, showing little to no improvement. Some sources even believe the rates are slowly increasing, explaining that "despite sustained economic growth and poverty reduction, the proportion of the population that is food insecure increased from 19 percent in 1992 to 21 percent in 2007." ("Uganda: Nutrition Profile") This validates that poverty and food security levels are unrelated and "malnutrition exists in both wealthy and poor households." The answer is that it would look quite different from what we are used to today. Many of the products used every day by Americans have been made available and sold to us due to globalization. Globalization is the process or act in which values, technologies, and businesses spread internationally; connecting, sharing ideas and technologies and moving from their domestic roots to establish a worldwide influence as they expand their sources of production and customer base beyond their home boundaries. This practice has been happening since World War II, continuing to better the global economy, while sometimes ruining countries at the same time. Dominant countries, otherwise known as "core countries," like the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom benefit more from globalization because they can dominate the trade markets, control advanced technologies, and maintain high levels of productivity. On the contrary, peripheral countries like Uganda are recognized by their dependent and disadvantageous trade links, obsolescent technologies, and undeveloped economies. While there are many cons to why globalization can be bad for both core and peripheral countries, as you will see in this essay, the pros outweigh the cons. The connection between different types of development is often an important part of this research as well. Political and economic development in Uganda based on these terms provides a strong case for the relationship between the two. The lack of political development in Uganda since independence from Britain in 1962 has hindered economic development and it was not until recent political stability that Uganda has been able to experience any sort of economic development. To understand the political development in Uganda, it is important to start shortly before 1962 to examine the political atmosphere of independence. Under the colonial system, Uganda was a protectorate, meaning that land rights of Africans were respected, despite the commonplace of forced labor and high taxes. In 1961 Uganda was granted self–rule before gaining full independence in 1962. With the granting of self–rule, three major political parties formed, the Uganda People's Congress (UPC), the Democratic Party (DP) and the Kabaka Yekka (KY). The main platform of the UPC was nationalist and the party strived to unite all Ugandans despite ethnic differences. The KY was mainly an ethnic party consisting of the Baganda people who were the most favored under British rule. An alliance between the UPC and KY gave them more collective strength than the DP and increased the political power of Milton Obote. In much of Africa however this was held up by a lack of integration into the digital infrastructure.
