Impressionism
Impressionism as an historical art period is best described as a shift in thinking and focus. This
paradigm shift, away from realism and toward individualism, began a centuries long transformation
of self–expression in art as a whole. Impressionism is generally considered a French movement and
is typically defined as spanning from approximately 1867 to 1886. Impressionism is best embodied
by and was perhaps initiated by Claud Monet in such world–renowned works as Impressions: soleil
levant which lent its name to the style and subsequently the art period as a whole.

And, much like impressionism had done in its early years, expounded upon what was considered
standard or acceptable subject matter.
Post–Impressionism is generally considered as having begun at sometime around 1880 and
continuing even until now (as technically all forms/movements of art do). Perhaps the most easily
recognizable post–impressionist art piece would be Van Gogh's "Starry Night", crafted by the
eccentric artist in 1889.
What Monet was to Impressionism Van Gogh became to post–impressionism; stand–outs amongst
many artists who longed to break free of the traditionalist view of art as a primarily linear form.
Irrevocably Connected
Beyond the simple fact that one (post–impressionism) cannot have existed without the other
(impressionism) the revolutionary technique shared by both movements; small, generally circular or
curved strokes, brilliant colors, use of light, and subject matter that reached beyond the traditional
scope ties them together in a unique and easily identifiable manner. One cannot view Monet's
Impressions: soleil levant and Van Gogh's Starry Night without instantly seeing the undeniable
similarities; both artists' use of light and deliberate brush strokes leave the viewer with little doubt

Post–impressionism, which was primarily a French art movement, developed approximately
between 1886 and 1905. Subdivisions of Post–impressionism include Divisionism and Pointillism,
which involves using dots and patches of color to form a picture. Due to these characteristics, post–
impressionism ushered in a new era of painting, and paved the way for many future art movements
such as fauvism and cubism.
Its antecedent being Impressionism, post–impressionism contains traces of elements from that
movement, but has its own diverging styles too. For example, the main difference between

applied thickly, forming multiple layers of paint. Not only is it applied to formed thick layers, the
paint is applied in short, swift brushstrokes. Structure and form are heavily present in post
impressionism artworks. On top of that, post impressionism artworks tend to more expression of

In this essay, I will contrast and compare the two art movements, Impressionism, and Post–
Impressionism. I will be concentrating on the works of the two leading artists of these styles Claude
Monet and Vincent van Gogh.
The impressionist movement is often considered to mark the beginning of the modern period of art.
It was developed in France during the late 19th century. The impressionist movement arose out of
dissatisfaction with the classical, dull subjects and clean cut precise techniques of painting. They
preferred to paint outdoors concentrating more on landscapes and street scenes, and began to paint

This is where we can see the painting still holding onto a touch of the more classical style, but is
achieved in a much more impressionistic fashion the mood of the painting is quite peaceful and
calming, and the relaxed people and light colours give it a happy and uplifting feel. I think that
Monet through his painting was trying to capture a typical laid back French scene. He is also trying
to break away from the paintings of the past, that were more sombre and didn?t show ordinary
people and their lives. I really enjoyed studying this painting and feel that Monet has created a piece
which has many interesting and intriguing features and touches, such as the light bouncing across
the water, and shows what a skilled and talented painter he was.
The Road–Bridge at Argentil painted in 1874 was another of Claude Monet?s pieces. It is of a river
scene, which has a small sailing boat as its main point of interest. The boat is painted in just a dark
shade but this contrasts well with the lighter surroundings. We look on this piece from the riverbank,
with the small boat perfectly positioned just slightly to the left, which allows us to have an
uninterrupted view of the long bridge with its different shapes and curves. The bridge helps give an
impression of perspective and leads your eye onto the house, small boat and riverbank in the

the artistic community and world as a whole. Both sought to break the molds of previous artistic
styles and movements by creating work truly unique to the artist him or herself. The artists of the
Impressionism and Post–Impressionism movements employed vibrant color pallets, well defined
brush strokes, and unique perspectives on their subjects that sought to capture light, movement, and

Unlike the previous artistic movements, the Impressionists sought to move away from the rigidity of
religious themes and stiff portraits that limited the artist's creativity and unique style as an artist.
Even painting outside of a studio en plein air was relatively unheard of until the Impressionists
stepped outside of the restrictive box. The Impressionist artists employed an advanced understating
of techniques that included: Color theory, broken brushstrokes, subject matter, optics, light, and
movement. These techniques allowed the Impressionists to separate their work and style from that of
previous artistic movements. Though they employed a variety of techniques to achieve their unique
style, the technique that truly set them apart was their use of broken brushstrokes. Previous artistic
movements sought to hide brushstrokes into a soft, smooth, seamless design. But by doing this, the
unique style of the artist is limited. The broken brushstroke technique allowed the artist to put his or
her brushstrokes at the forefront of the painting, they became as important to the painting as the

Visual Analysis Of Art By George Seurat
Did you know that you could make art with just using dots? George Seurat did all of his paintings
with just dots. He was born on December 2nd 1859 and died on March 29 1891. His death is still
unknown but there's theories that he died from pneumonia or some other type of physical illness.
There's three paintings that stood out to me there full of color and have a lot of things incorprated
into them.
A sunday afternoon on the island of LaGrande Jatte
is one of his popular paintings it entirely made out of tiny dots. He painted it between 1884–1886 its
81.6 x 121.2 inches the painting is in chicago at the art institute of chicago. It represents people

Summary Of The Mailman By Van Gogh
Description
The mailman pictured is painted frontally dressed in a work uniform, its formality creating a sharp
contrast with the rather informal background. His expression forms a look of indifference–
seemingly portraying no sign of emotion. At first glance this is plausible, but after further
investigation the mouth seems to be turned down at the edges. His eyes are subtly looking down,
with eyelids half closed and eyebrows slightly raised. This gives the impression that rather than
being indifferent, the man is portrayed being in thought. This forms a stylistic tension within the
painting, between the formality of his frontal position with his uniform and the introspection shown
in his facial expression.
Van Gogh devises movement within the painting through the background and the mailman's beard.
The beard splits into two directions, ultimately creating the illusion of a swirling motion. The beard
catches the movement of the pattern in the background, echoing unity and making for a dynamic
work of art. An analogous color scheme unites the different elements of the painting together.
Additionally, the piping on his uniform produces a less dimensional look when compared to the rest
of the painting. However, the flowers in the background bring life to the painting by contrasting
with his detached expression. In particular, the background gives the impression of wall paper:
establishing a feeling of home contrary to the man's identity as a mailman outside of his own home.

George Seurat Essay
Impressionism takes the moment at hand and depicts it with light and color. George Seurat was
influenced by Impressionism using modern subjects and urban leisure scenes. He used color
characterizing of Impressionism but also made arrangements based on color theory. Seurat wanted
to capture all the colors that interacted to make their own appearance which differed in thought to
Impressionism of putting colors next to each other to create colors that blended optically. Seurat
helped move Impressionism into Post–Impressionism by developing a systematic structured way of
painting.
Seurat was influenced by Cheverul who figured color "impose its own complementary on its

The way the sun pours down on the people, the rest of the canvas basks in the sun whereas the
shadows are a darker green hue on the lighter green grass. The way the sun is portrayed, it looks as
if it's mid–afternoon. Seurat's pointillism shows the light coming from the left onto the people and
objects. The trees show the special blending effects of the colors. To the left of the painting, the use
of white creates a light and as the eye moves to the right, it blends into the color of the greens of the
trees. Here, Seurat is placing white and green next to each other. The brushwork of the painting is
dotlike with the dots varying in size and shape. These individuals dots blend together into one scene.
The painting's perspective is to the left with the people all looking that way toward the river. The
people in the front of the painting are closer to the eye. The woman in the front and that man
walking with her are the biggest figures in the picture. These sizes help balance the artwork. Lines
were mostly avoided with the use of shading for a softer effect.
Seurat's painting is one of the most reproduced paintings. Initially, pointillism was not received well
as this new painting style was like nothing else and the general public did not receive it well. A

On a smaller canvas than two other similar paintings, Vincent Van Gogh carefully painted for the
third time his bedroom in Arles, a charming town in the south of France, and thus created this
approximately 22 ½ x 29'' artwork. In fact, Van Gogh made three almost identical paintings on the

Perhaps he had come to Arles for the sun and for him, it was an immense joy to live in such bright
bedroom, bursting with colors. What is also fascinating about this piece of art is how the painter
highlights the simplicity of his bedroom through the medium of color: « the pale lilac walls, the
floor of an old brown, the chairs and bed chrome yellow, the blood red cover, the orange little table
and the blue basin", as the painter describes it. Van Gogh asserted that he wanted to express a
complete rest by handling all these different shades2. The color black, which could be evocating a
certain form of anguish, is almost nonexistent in this painting. Only the frame of the mirror and
windows is black. We wonder if this could mean that Van Gogh was afraid of his future and afraid to
face up to reality. This is a possibility. In fact, despite the evidence of his happiness, present in this
painting, Van Gogh was not married2 and many clues here let us think that he wished to be.
Although the bedroom is very sparsely furnished and only contains essential items (which shows, in
addition to the choice of colors, a great simplicity), we notice that many of these objects go together
in pairs (two pillows, two chairs, two portraits on the wall, two drawings, and even two doors).
Thus, this painting on canvas was perhaps his way of expressing his wish to meet someone and that

Introduction
Apple Harvest is a painting created by a French artist named Camille Pissarro in 1888. The artwork
is derived from the European culture focusing on the style of neo–impressionism or pointillism. The
painting is made with the use of oil on canvas and currently located inside the Dallas Museum of Art
in second floor in the section of European art. It depicts a lively image of farmers engaging in their
daily activities where they are picking apples on a sunny day. The background of the landscape
consists of a huge ranch with additional apple trees that gives a vibration of harvesting season.
Similarly, it is a form of a representational artwork portraying physical labor by the farmers during
that period. Camille Pissarro seemed to support the farmers of low social status and believed in hard
work as some of his artworks are the representations of lives of these social groups (Dallas Museum
of Art 2017). In the painting "Apple Harvest", he tries to picture working peasants in an apple farm
in the French Countryside (Dallas Museum of Art 2017). This paper is an integration of the analysis
of formal elements and principles relevant to the art work "Apple Harvest" and my experience of
observation of this piece of art at the Dallas Museum of Art including a reflection upon the visit.

Comparison Between Impressionism And Post Impressionism
Art is the best way humans can express their thoughts and realities. Many people do not see art in a
linear fashion; whether a painting is from the 1800s or the 1900s many people would consider them
the same. Art has gone through many changes since its conception many millennia ago. Due to this,
one cannot scrutinize all of the art movements in the same fashion. Two of art's largest movements,
Impressionism and Post–Impressionism, are commonly lumped together in the same category.
Although these movements are very similar in name, they have distinct characteristics that set them
apart. However, they also have some aspects in common. The Impressionist art movement took
place between the years 1874 and 1886. At the time this movement was birthed, the majority of
high–end art being made was made in a super realistic and classical way. The Salon, a place in
France where art was displayed, only accepted this kind of art. The Salon was ran by the French
government and all art placed in it had to be approved. The Impressionists were always refused due
to them not painting about significant figures in the government or of the church. Impressionists
painted about ordinary people doing ordinary things alongside landscapes and taboo topics. The
Salon did not only refuse them because of this but also because Impressionists did not paint in an

Imagine a painting comprised of thousands of tiny dots that have been strategically placed in a
pattern to form an image.The pioneer of pointillism and Neo–impressionism Georges–Pierre Seurat
sparked a new art movement and painting technique which was associated with creating the
appearance of solid figures using points of pure color grouped together. His creation of this art style
was inspired by his desire to abandon Impressionism. Seurat's most famous paintings of the 19th
century is the art piece made by Frenchman Georges Seurat called A Sunday Afternoon on La
Grande Jatte which uses the pointillism approach. It was painted between 1885–1886. The technique

From the figures in the painting, you can see sunbathers, soldiers, men in top hats, women with
parasols, dogs, and a monkey. According to an article, it states that "a monkey in French (and
female) is known as "singesse," denoting a prostitute. The smartly dressed woman is fishing – but
for what" ("Seurat's Grande Jatte", n.d.). I found this interesting because when I first saw this
painting, I first assumed it was just a regular painting of wealthy citizens relaxing and did not
suspect anything of the monkey strangely being present. The women on the right is holding a leash
to the monkey which many critics suspect that Seurat is trying to say through symbolism that this
woman is a prostitute who is out for a stroll with her client and that she is "fishing" for more. On the
left of the photo, you see a woman dressed in orange fishing by the water, which seems innocent.
According to an online dictionary, the French word for fish is 'pêcher', which some believe is a plan
on word as the French word for sin is 'pécher' (Dave, "The Psychology of Geometry"). References to
prostitution used the words 'pêche' (fishing) and 'péché' (sin) a lot in French cartoons. The artist may
be hinting that they are both prostitutes and demonstrates the art piece's satirical nature. Not only are
they suspect prostitutes, but they may have been proletarian women that have become superficially
bourgeois through prostitution. Seurat adds another perspective to the comparison of the proletariat

There have been different art forms that have come and go over the course of time. Hence I will
discuss, two significant movements like Post–impressionism and Pop art. Two important artists from
these movements are, Vincent Van Gogh and Andy Warhol. There are many differences and very
few similarities between these two movements and artists, although more differences. Van Gogh is
one of the most captivating artists of post–impressionism. . Throughout his career Van Gogh has
painted many works. One of those magnificent paintings is "Starry Night" by Vincent Van Gogh. In
the other hand we will discuss one of the popular paintings " Gold Marilyn" by Andy Warhol.
Warhol is also the most famous of the Pop Artists and played a major role in making the art
movement popular.
Post–impressionism and Pop Art resulted as an artistic reaction on both sides. Post–Impressionism
groups diverse pictorial tendencies that arose in France surroundings to 1880–1905 like reaction to
the impressionism. In the other hand pop art was an artistic reaction to abstract expressionism. It can

Impressionism
Impressionists were seen as artists who were challenging normal and accepted concepts of color and
light. Impressionism got its start when certain painters started to use more natural methods of
painting and lighting their work, really straying from the traditional rules of academic painting and
art. In 1874, a group of artists called the Anonymous Society of Painters, Sculptors, Printmakers,
etc. put together an exhibit in Paris, France(4). Subsequently starting the movement which we know
today as Impressionism. Its founding members included Claude Monet, and Edgar Degas among
others. The group was unified and brought together only by its independence from the official
annual Salon (the Salon was the official art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux–Arts in Paris. The
salon considered to be the greatest annual art event in the Western world beginning in 1667) (2).
While many conservative critics disapproved of their work for its unfinished and sketch like
appearance, more progressive writers and critics praised it for its depiction of modern life and
enjoyed it for its contemporary subject matter with an innovative, new and different style calling
attention to it by calling it a "revolution in modern painting" (3) . To further on the style and history

Impressionism was a movement that came about in the late 19th century, most specifically its roots
can be traced back the 1874 when a group called the Anonymous Society of Painters, Sculptors,
Printmakers, etc. organized an exhibition in Paris. (Samu, 2004). The group led several exhibitions
through the 1880's which brought them into the spot light despite criticism from the conventional art
community in France. The movement received its name from one of the movements most now most

These artists felt that impressionism was missing many key elements including emotional,
structural, symbolic and spiritual representation. (Misialowski, 2006) Artists of this time frame
worked, in most cases, independently and today are most often referred to as Post–Impressionists.
The style was defined by vibrant colors, thick paint application, real life subject matter, geometric
shapes, and distortion of objects figures for expressive emotional effect. Some of the key artists of
this time included: Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Georges Seurat. Aristide
Maillol and Edouard Vuillard.
One of my favorite pieces of this time comes of course from van Gogh. The piece is titled
Straßenarbeiter which means Road Workers. The imagery of this piece is rough and course with
distorted views and sharp lines. The shapes of the trees almost draw you away from the what the
piece is actually titled after, the road workers who are shown off in the distance and then again on
the left edge of the painting. The colors give the image a dark look like it is depicting a late fall day
with the workers frantically trying to complete the task before the onset of winter.
Again, like the impressionism movement, there was not really a prime reason for this movement

George Pierre Seurat Research Paper
George–Pierre Seurat was born on Decemeber 2, 1859 in Paris, France. He was the son of
Chrysostom–Antoine Seurat and Ernestine Faivre. He was the youngest of 3 children. His father was
a bailiff and a native of Champagne and his mother was Parisian. They were middle–class. The
family relocated temporily to Fontainebleau in 1870, while the Franco–Prussian War and the Paris
Commune rebellion. When Seurat was a little boy he began to take interest in art and was

The modernism period was a time for art to search for a new form of expression. It was a movement
in western art which had develops in the middle of the 19th century and tried to capture the pictures
and sensibilities of the age. Modernism art expand way beyond simply dealing with the present and
involves the critical examination from the artist masterpieces. Modernism advance a era of testing in
the arts from the mid 19th to the mid–20th century, coming after World War I. in the era where it

The Rise Of Post Impressionism
Impressionism was an art movement that started in the mid Nineteenth Century and peaked during
the 1870s. Although Impressionism was also apparent in mediums like music and literature, its most
prominent influence was painting. As it progressed towards Post–Impressionism, it opened up the
art world to stylistic rendering, deviated from realism, and introduced the world to modern and
avant–garde art. This essay will discuss how it managed to do so and specifically how the movement
advanced into Post–Impressionism.
To understand how Impressionism came about, we must first understand how Academic Art rose to
power. Academic Art was introduced in the Renaissance period, Old Masters such as Leonardo and

After Impressionism peaked in 1870– artists such as Cézanne and Seurat started to opt out from
exhibiting altogether, and had produced their own styles. In the eighth and final Impressionist
exhibition, it was suggested that the title 'Impressionist' be dropped as the artists who aligned with
its characteristics were not present, and pieces were judged by its own merit rather than as a group.
Manet's death in 1883 had also signaled the breakup of the Impressionists, being one of the initiators
of the movement. Therefore, the lack of common ideas between the artists led them to work

Auvers by Vincent van Gogh, Goldfish by Henri Matisse, and Mont Sainte Victoire by Paul

The work of art Houses at Auvers by Vincent van Gogh was made after he left the
asylum at Saint Rémy de Provence. He admitted himself there because he was very sad and
before he arrived he cut off his ear and gave it to a prostitute as a gift. He only resided there for a
short amount of time (the end of 1888–1890) because he became bored. As a result, he moved to
Auvers–sur–Oise, northwest of Paris. There, he painted Houses at Auvers in June of 1890 which
was one of several works of art made before his suicide in the same year.
Houses at Auvers depicts a landscape of early summer in Auvers–sur–Oise. It's medium,

these styles started to rise up in the 19th century from France. There are many differences between

It is not surprising that Katherine Mansfield was an admirer of Post–Impressionistic paintings. She

the Salon d'Automne in Paris, an exhibit which defined the movement. Matisse was a French artist
who had actually worked in several mediums, but was most famous for his paintings. He was born
in Le Cateau–Cambresis, Northern France, in 1869. He first began painting in 1889 with a small
assortment of paintings supplies his mother had gifted him during a period when he was recovering
from illness. He joined Gustave Moreau, who would become an inspirational leader for Matisse's
Fauvist movement, at his studio in 1891. In 1896, Matisse began working with an Australian
impressionist painter John Peter Russell, who Matisse would credit as having taught him color
theory. Russel introduced him to impressionism and the works of Vincent van Gogh; Matisse's

Aside from the dark shadows the painting is done in light, bright colours and once again Monet
shows his skill in portraying a nice sunny day by the riverside. He has managed to give the
impression of calm rippling water by using rough brushstrokes. He uses a mix of light and darker

art. Many believe his artwork and style shaped 20th–century art and many artists incorporated his

Before starting my research into van Gogh. I knew as much as the ordinary person would about him.

more expressive form that distinguishes many styles in the arts and literature of the late nineteenth
and twentieth century. Emile Bernard was part of this modern art movement as can be seen in his
painting, "Breton Woman and Haystacks", painted around 1888. Impressionists were modern artists
who tended to paint outside landscapes and street scenes and were concerned with the effects of
light. Bernard was a Post–Impressionist artist who considered Impressionism too casual or too

He also liked their version of Catholicism because they believed God was noticeable in everyday
life. This attraction to the Breton way of life is apparent by the way Bernard paints them. Both the
woman and the landscape are drawn simply; the figures do not look realistic but the viewer is able to

haystacks are very similar in contour, yet both are easily discernable. Likewise, the trees and the

This paradigm shift, away from realism and toward individualism, began a centuries long transformation of self–expression in art as a whole.
