Garden and glass sculpture
In the glass house at the Museum of Glass is a 40 ft. tall 100 ft. long glass sculpture. The sculpture is made of glass and steel, and covers 4,500 square
feet.It is made of many large red, orange, yellow, gold, and amber flower like pieces. This sculpture was made by Dale Chihuly who works at the
Museum of Glass. The glass house is also a place that allows people to do yoga while they look at the sculpture. It is suspended to the ceiling and walls,
and is placed in a very large light filled room with many windows. The sculpture is made of 2,000 pieces and are all connected by steel wires. If you are
standing in the glass house, You will be able to see the space needle, because the museum is located at the base of it in seattle. The glass house
exhibit was opened May 20, 2012. Before Dale made the sculpture, he made a very small model of it.

During the winter in the museum, a white glass sculpture that is very large is brought into the glass house by the sculpture every winter. Every
sunday during winter until christmas, the museum holds winter events, and open a winter exhibit. The Museum of Glass has exhibits inside the
building and some exhibits are outside such as the garden exhibit, that has glass sculptures that look like plants. Most of the exhibits are in dark
rooms with lights shining down on the sculpture, but the room the glass sculpture is in, is made of mostly windows. There are not just glass
sculptures at the museum, there are colorful carpets and blankets placed on walls. Some of the glass sculptures are hanging from the ceiling, and
some are on the floor. The museum of glass is only located in one place, and that is 305 Harrison street, Tacoma,

Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum
Details of the museum permanent collection of sculptures of the 70–year career of Detroit–based public sculptor Marshall M. Fredericks (1908–1998)
Viewed at the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum (September 5, 2014) The Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum contains the artwork of
the most prolific sculptors of the twentieth century. Museum features a unique collection of more than two thousand works that span the 70–year
career of Detroit–based public sculptor Marshall M. Fredericks (1908–1998). He is known nationally and internationally for his impressive
monumental figurative sculpture, public memorials, fountains, portraits, and medals. The art gallery was full of sculptures that are all in white made
by plaster. On the walls, different kinds of sculptures were hung. Some of them were religious but most of them reflect daily activities and some of
them bring us into a world of imagination and dreams. As I walk through the gallery looking at the sculptures I read information on the label attached to

Fredericks was commissioned to sculpt a 6–foot–tall crucifix, but instead designed this 28–foot full–scale model, for a bronze to be placed at the Indian
River Catholic Shrine in Indian River, Michigan. The sculpture reminds me of church because it represents the crucifixion of Jesus. It had a facial
expression that reveals apparent emotions of pain and sadness. The size and placing of the sculpture up on the wall is a dominant settling force for the
eye, and it contrasts well with other sculptures around it. The white plaster on the sculpture establishes a powerful element as a visual

Power And Pathos : Bronze Sculpture Of The Hellenistic World
Power and Pathos: Bronze Sculpture of the Hellenistic World Amid the Hellenistic period from the passing of Alexander the Great in 323 B.C. until the
foundation of the Roman Empire in 31 B.C., the medium of bronze drove imaginative advancement. Sculptors moved past Classical norms,
supplementing accustomed subjects and romanticized frames with reasonable renderings of physical and passionate states. To achieve this, using the
discovery of bronze for art, they start to create pieces of art composed bronze and other alloys. Bronze–surpassing marble with its rigidity, intelligent
impacts, and capacity to hold fine detail–was utilized for element organizations, stunning showcases of the naked body, and realistic articulations of age
and character. Cast from combinations of copper, tin, lead, and different components, bronze statues were delivered by presenting honorific
representations of rulers and natives populated city squares, and pictures of divine beings, legends, and mortals swarmed havens. The Seated Boxer and
the Statue of an Athlete are two sculptures that encompass the complete aspects of the figures through representation and materiality.
Made in the Hellenistic period, when an affection for authenticity made a capable development on prior Classical optimism, the boxer is incredibly
sensible. The statue depicts a boxer situated with his arms laying on his knees, his head swung to one side and somewhat raised with mouth open. The
figure is stripped aside from his

The Sculptures And Frescoes Of Women
The sculptures, carvings, and frescoes of women that we have in the ancient world I think make it hard to get an exact depiction on what the roles
and statues of women really were. There are a lot of archeologists that devote their lives to the study of reading these paintings. I feel like most of
the time even the experts guess could be as good as a novice because even with art sometimes there are hidden meanings that only the artist knows.
Although most of these sculptures and frescoes seem to have so much detail that make it easier for us to at least try and depict what their meanings
are. The sculptures help us go back in time and figure out what our ancestors went through to get us to where we are now. I think sculptures, carvings,
and frescoes of the ancient world show how women are very supportive and submissive to their husbands, took on more feminist roles in their
communities, and show their statues based on how they dressed. In most pictures of women from the ancient world they seem to be shown as being
very supportive of their husbands. Although women now are supportive of their husbands, it seems as though in the pictures this was only a one way
support system. There was one statue made which was shown in our book, The Humanistic Tradition, where the queen is standing next to the king with
her arms around him (Fiero, 2006, p. 24). I think this picture is a great example of how women might have been the emotional support for their
husbands. The picture shows

Sculpture and Donatello
Donatello (1386–1466) was a master of sculpture in bronze and marble and was considered one of the greatest Italian Renaissance artists of his
time. There is much more to know about him, though then the name alone. He has created some of the greatest works of art, not only in the Italian
renaissance, but human history as well.
A lot is known about his life and career but little is known about his character and personality. Donatello never married and seems to be a man of
В‘simple tastes'. Patrons often found him hard to deal with and he demanded a lot of artistic freedom.

Francis are outstanding and the finest of the reliefs are the four miracles of St. Anthony. Donatello was great in handling large numbers of figures (one
relief has more than one hundred), which predicts the construction standards of the High Renaissance.
Donatello was not doing much work the last three years at Padua, the work for the S. Antonio altar was unpaid for and the Gattamelata monument
not placed until 1453. Offers of other places reached him from Mantua, Modena, Ferrara, and even Naples, but nothing came of them. He was
clearly passing through a crisis that prevented him from working. He was later quoted as saying that he almost died "among those frogs in
Padua." In 1456 the Florentine physician Giovanni Chellini noted he had successfully treated the master for a protracted illness. Donatello
only completed two works between 1450 and 1455, the wooden statue "St. John the Baptist" and a figure of Mary Magdalen. Both works show new
reality; Donatello's formerly powerful bodies have become withered and spidery. When the " Magdalen" was damaged in the 1966 flood at Florence,
restoration work revealed the original painted surface, including realistic flesh tones and golden highlights throughout the saint's hair.

Assyrian Sculptures
When we talked about the similarities between Sumerian and Assyrian sculptures, both of them are some kind of art that's been engraved to wood
stone and other objects, and the important part of both of them are that they deal with God(s), those were not just any engraved object they had a very
deep meaning for the people of that time, even nowadays. The differences, Sumerian may have been the first to talk through picture or tell stories using
pictures/art. On the other hand Assyrian sculptures I would say it just upgraded version of Sumerian sculptures, which talked or told stories using
picture but in lots of different area, it mainly showed art/picture of God(s). And building that study finds that we (modern world) using somehow same

He made the law fair for everybody, most of his staled code was in favor of humanity and that's what made it very significant to the humidity. If we
look at code 196, "if a man destroy an eye of another man they shall destroy his eye. If one broke a man's bone, they shall break his bone. If one
destroy eye of a freeman or break the bone of a free man he shall pay one mana of silver. If one destroy the eye of a man's slave or break a bone of a
man's slave he shall pay one–half his price." (King Hammurabi). That really convince me that it significant to humanity. Because regard less who
commits the crime he/she have to pay the same penalty. I somehow find a pattern between codes of Hammurabi and the "sharia law" even though
there isn't any law that's called "sharia law". The word "sharia "means law. However we can say Islamic law or whatever you call it, my question is
if we don't have any problem with "Hammurabi Code" we even find it significant to HUMANITY. Then why do we "mainly western society" have

Reflection Of A Look At The Washed Ashore Sculpture Exhibit
This semester I attended the Washed Ashore Sculpture Exhibit. It is located on the campus of Iowa State University in the Reiman Gardens. This event
is related to Humanities because exhibit houses many art sculptures made of trash. The trash is plastics and other house hold items that have washed
ashore in Oregon and Northern California. The purpose of the exhibit is to raise awareness to the damages of plastic to the environment, what plastic
can do to animals and ecosystems, demonstrate how nonbiodegradable plastic is, and how much plastic there is in the ocean.
The exhibit is set up so that right as you walk it the butterfly exhibit entrance is off to your left, and the research facility is off to your right. In
between them is a hallway filled with Jellyfish made of plastic water bottles and caps and other trash. At the end of the hallway is a pair of doors that
leads to a greenhouse that a bunch of plants and a large jellyfish. When you go outside, there is a pathway that leads to each of the gardens and ten
sculptures that is featured inside the Washed AshoreSculpture Exhibit.
I had four favorite sculptures in the gardens. One of my favorite pieces was the Polar Bear. Right as you approached the entrance to the park, you are
greeted by the polar bear. The polar bear represented the results of global warming and loss of land for polar bears to live and hunt on. Another was
the Giant Jellyfish. Inside the greenhouse there was a giant Jellyfish hanging from the ceiling.

Statues and Sculpture: An Art Form that Depicts Human History
Art Stands Tall for Human Values In 2008 a group of archaeologist unearthed what could now be the world's oldest statue. This larger than life statuette
stands at whopping 2 ВЅ inches tall with an estimated carving date from 35,000 to 40,000 years ago from a mammoth tusk. The form of the statuette is
that of female figure missing her head and feet with a primary focus on reproductive organs. Due to the pornographic nature of the statue archaeologist
believe that the statue's purpose and function is to represent longevity and fertility. No matter if you believe man crawled from primordial ooze or if a
being of higher authority created man, humans have continued to express emotion, experiences and values through the artistic expression... Show more

Starting in 1870, artist August Bartholdi made a trip to the United States to search out a place to erect the statue and begin the initial design. The form
of the statue is actually created from two separate forms. The first form used to create the statue is that of a neoclassical sculpture of the Roman goddess
Libertas who represented freedom and democracy. The second form used in the statue is that of the fictional female character, Columbia who many at
the time believe carried the embodiment of America. The main function of the statue is to represent individual liberty and freedom from slavery.
Liberty has always been a highly held value in the United States so it would be important that the function of this statue represented that value. The
statue's function of freedom and liberty is carried throughout the sculpture. You will find the date of the independence placed upon the tablet she
carries. At her feet lay broken shackles from slavery. Upon her crown are seven rays that represent freedom to all the seven continent's citizens who
come to this country seeking freedom. Her right arm is raised in the air above her head carrying a torch that light's the way to that freedom. Her outer
skin is covered in thin copper sheets that over time patina giving the statue her green hue. Some may not know as well that the statue's internal structure
is just as famous as her outer appearance. The

that can easily be answered through research on Greek art but actually understanding the flow of change within the different periods allows people to
grasp the enticing change of the artworks. The idea of change simply gives artists a way to express themselves, not only for attracting the eye to
unique wonders in the world that occurred, but to also give a sense of idealism. Artistic figures in Ancient Greek art were made by artists that created

Yet the kouroi, which is a style made during the archaic period, reveal further realism, obviously depicting that the human structure was more
important than the overall events that took place during this period of ancient greek art. The kouros, plural for kouroi, was the depiction of young
men, going from the basic to those that were almost exact demonstrations. These stylistic depictions were used to indicate feelings and emotions using
figurative gestures. For example, Apollo, a god in Ancient Greek art, compatible with many sculptures of the perpetual youth known as the kouroi, is
rendered across the Archaic period showing the deified male physique, constructed on orders of segments and symbolizing the ability of somatic
allure. The artists that created the sculpture of Apollo really put emphasis on the figurative gesture of the torso and arms, revealing a sentimental
posture of what he stands for as an idealistic god. Although Apollo expressed the advancement of the likeness of human composition throughout the
archaic stage, the young male kouros were not soldiers, they were emblematics of the worshiper that were contributing a more indefinite and
inaudible assistance to a god.The idea the artist had was to not only show off the ideal male form, but to also allow for a sculpture that in a way
represented no other than a "mere mortal", for those who saw the figure as an enticing change to the span of time, where beauty and figurative emotion
of the perfect male configuration meant alot to people during the archaic period of ancient greek

The Sculpture Of The Etruscan- Roman Tradition
In the early official and private portrait of the Etruscan– Roman tradition, the achievement of sculpture from the identity of the ideal Republican
demonstrated motivation behind the virtus, veristic, and gravitas qualities. The Etruscan Roman portrait sculpture of the "Patrician Carrying Portrait
Busts of Two Ancestors" is a life–size marble statue that was dated to the period of the Emperor Augustus somewhere at the end of the 1st century BCE
or the beginning of the 1st century CE, reflecting the practices that have originated from the past by Polybius.
This Etruscan– Roman piece of art is detailed all around, but also ideal as depictions look influential throughout the generations from the living patrician
man holding the lifeless portrait busts of the two very distinct ancestors. The surface of the marble used to carve the male figure, and the portrait heads
is very smooth and pale in colour, as the natural agent simulates' realistic complexion through the veins present within the marble creating a three–
dimensional illusion of meticulous naturalistic rendition of the human anatomy engraved with relief detail all around. The function of the portrait
sculpture was to have a permanent documentation motivated by the realistic commemoration of one's ancestors in a religious and ritualistic funeral use
of death masks, that would have been cast from the face of the deceased. This became an obvious style of presenting recognizable prestige that

'Archer': The Most Greek Sculptures
Prior to the 1980's it was believed most Greek sculptures to be porcelain, smooth, white marble material completely void of color. However new
advanced technology has uncovered to us bright and complex colors that were once showered on these sculptures. This in many ways changes the
entire environment and perspective of the sculpture all together. From color we can generate more theories as to the surrounding context of the piece of
art at hand. An example and truthfully the only solid piece of evidence, "Archer" has revealed a plethora of information regarding the history and
background of the soldier himself. Before color scheme was added we knew nothing of his social class, rank within the military and whether or not he

It would be hard to believe that any government or authoritative body who handles military expenditures would direct funds to uniforms of such
caliber to just regular infantry men/women. It is also important to note the extravagant tips of the arrows and the golden tint of the arrow are also
affirmation of the rank and importance this individual may have had. Using common since again, it is highly unlikely a basic infantry combatant
would have had such equipment. The bare minimum this tells of at least the success this individual had. My preference in this case would
undeniably have to be the sculpture that is void of all color. In the absence of such color while we are left with questions about the individual/s it
seems to be in less quantity then when we have colored schemes involved. I like not having to assign class, rank, social and economic status to the
individual. In this way the piece of art is left to be marveled at not by what he was perceived at during his era but rather for what we see it as today.
I get an individual fearless of battle yet elegant in his approach. When color was attributed that was all stripped from me and I was left to attack
whether or not his company involvement was even real for example. Although the porcelain like sculptures were perhaps coincidental I believed they

Comparing Menkaure And Queen Sculpture
1. The Menkaure and a Queen sculpture is 142.3 cm tall. It was from Giza but is located in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The medium used is
graywacke with traces of red and black paint. The Metropolitan Kouros sculpture is 6 feet 1 .95 m tall. It was found in Attica Greece but located in
New York in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The medium used is marble.
2. The Menkaure and a queen sculpture is standing against a wall or post. Its sculpted on black stone. The king is standing stiffly and expressionless

He is naked with his left foot forward as well. Kouros muscles and body parts are detailed in the sculpture. His hands are clenched and he is
emotionless. His hair looks like dread locks.

Barbara Hepworth's Epic Works Changed The Face Of Sculpture
Barbara Hepworth's Epic Works In the article, "Jeanette Winterson: Barbara Hepworth's Epic Works Changed the face of Sculpture," the author
introduces us to the woman who interchanged the look of sculpting. Winterson states, "She wanted something that people would actually look at, rather
than walk past, a piece where the meaning was inherent, rather than representational or symbolic". That statement goes to show that Barbara Hepworth
wanted to contribute something that was different from other sculptors. Barbara Hepworth's work was captivating, engaging and she was autonomous.
To begin, Barbara Hepworth's work was quite captivating in various ways. We know this because the author simply introduced readers to one of
Hepworth's most striking pieces. As mentioned earlier, the article states that she wanted something that people would actually look at, rather than walk

Essay on The Human Body in Ancient Greek Sculptures
The Human Body in Ancient Greek Sculptures
The primary focus of ancient Greek sculptures was that of the human body. Almost all Greek sculptures are of nude subjects. As the first society to
focus on nude subjects, Greek sculptors attempted to "depict man in what they believed was the image of the gods and so would come to celebrate the
body by striving for verisimilitude or true – likeness (realism and naturalism!)."(Riffert) Not only did the Greeks celebrate the human form in their art
but also in everyday life. (Riffert) One of the favorite topics for sculptors was that of the athlete. In Greek culture athletes were described as
"hero–athletes". (Riffert) This shows that athletes were revered and looked upon as heroes. The influence ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Greeks were constantly in search of the "Ideal"(Riffert). Their "Ideal" was "a body capable of enduring all efforts, either of the racecourse or of
bodily strength...this is why the athletes in the pentathlon are the most beautiful." (Tufts) This description of the "Ideal" person given by Aristotle
reflects the attitude of the majority of ancient Greeks. People were not judged solely on their minds but rather strong emphasis was given to the
body. This emphasis given to the body was given to the nude body. It is understandable that we question why nude art was so accepted by the
Greeks, as they were the pioneers in this field. The answer lies in the everyday life of the people. It was commonplace for Greek men to exercise, go to
war, and generally go about their daily business in the nude or scantly clothed (Boardman 276).
While male nudity was straightforward and hiding nothing, female nudity was more reserved. In the first fully nude female sculpture, Aphrodite of
Knidos by Praxitales c. 350–340bc., "the 'feminine principle' (is invented) which as a demure pose where the knees are brought together and
sometimes the hand is discreetly before the genitals"(Riffert). This reference shows that in art as in life, women are depicted as less than equal to their
bold male counterparts. Usually female statues were either draped in some way or

"The Kiss" Marble Sculpture by Rachel Manson Essay
This was created by Rachel Manson. In historic period, carving is the technique of changing shape of a material which the artist subtracts or cuts
away from a solid material to reach the desired form by use of tools such as knives, chisels tipped power cutters, and chainsaws. This kind of Art
work, can be time consuming and painstaking method because of the hard and heavy materials, such as stones or other marble that are often used.
However, artists also carve from softer substances such as wood and soap depending on recourses and cost. Sculpturing requires innovative or
intellectual ideas. I would say that the sculptor could use some attention but keep at it. My favorite piece is the ceramic sculpture; it is the cleanest and

Throughout ancient period, there have been plenty of pieces of art that are appalling, shocking, and created quite an abstract reaction, yet they are great
works of Art. In addition, there are pieces of Art sculpture with quality in which immediate impression you have upon seeing, hearing, and touching
will reflect emotional response within you. This takes place before your instinct recognizes the content of the work and starts to work out meanings and
messages. I believe sculpture has to include some of the elements and principles of the language of Art in order to be recognized. The sculptor needs the
structure they present to be successfully communicating the idea and present the 'beauty' and harmony of the work. I have used the example as
modeling technique, the sculptor manipulate soft materials to create a three–dimensional form. Unlike carving, it requires soft substances that can be
easily and rapidly shaped by the sculptor's hands. Most frequents material used for modeling is clay; however, plaster, papier–mache, and wax are also
common material. In my humble opinion, my conscience, tells that a lot of realism has been lost because we do not have the same use of symbolism
as earlier centuries. We see objects simply for themselves, not as adding another level of meaning. In discussion with my partner, there are all sorts of
additional meanings conveyed through them. She thinks a "good" piece

University and is one that everyone usually sees when they are heading to the library. This sculpture is my third favorite one on campus at this point in
time. The sculpture has two students talking to another student on a bike. Dennis Smith also did a superb job using the elements of art throughout this
sculpture. When observing the sculpture, the first thing you notice is the contour lines in the sculpture such as the book cover, fingers, and the straps
on the backpack. These lines help define the outside edges of the sculpture. The next element of art that one can see in this sculpture is shape. The
wheel on the bike is a geometric shape because it is a circle. This a great example of this element and one that anyone who views it can find. The third
element present in this sculpture is value. In the sculpture, there is a bit of a grey scale although the sculpture is mostly light green now due to the
weather. The fourth element present in this sculpture is the texture. The sculpture has a simulated texture which means that it

Sculptures at Crosby Beach
Whilst visiting Crosby beach in October 2013 there was evidence of the public altering the statues appearance. Somebody had knitted around the ankle
of one, and also placed a hard hat on the head. The statues being placed at Crosby beach had created a large tourist attraction and we see how the
public introduce their own enjoyment to the art.
With the sculptures being constantly moved to different locations, they were granted permission to be permanently positioned at Crosby beach in 2005,
despite some objections. Certain people believed that the figures were offensive and pornographic due to them being naked with genitalia on show.
They also believed that they were a safety hazard due to it being difficult to differ between a human and a sculpture in low lighting. Also, reaching the
figures close to the sea was shown as a hazard due to the sinking mud; a problem which I had encountered myself! The sculptures being made out of
Cast iron is also relevant to them being positioned in Crosby beach. The cast iron links to the Liverpool's industrial origin as a major port. The figures
stand watching as many ships pass each day, as they are reaching their new destination. The sculptures are possibly standing, waiting to travel to '
Another place.' This point is strengthened by the fact that some of the sculptures are half buried in the sand, giving the impression of the statues
walking into the sea.

Early Classical Greek Sculpture
The main feature that defines the Early Classical Greek sculpture of the human body from the Archaic Greek sculpture of the body is the pose of the
body. Early Classical Greek sculptures of the human body are asymmetrical. During this time period, sculptures started adapting the contrapposto pose
to their sculptures. The contrapposto pose brought more life and energy to the sculptures than the previous Archaic Greek sculptures. Another feature
that defines the Early Classical Greek sculpture of the human body is that the sculptures were made from hollow–casting bronze. This technique
allowed for more complex action poses to be developed. The sculptures during this period, like the archaic period, were highly idealized forms of the
human body.

Jean Arp : The Sculpture Of The Classical Sculpture
Painting, sculpture, and architecture are considered the major forms of the fine arts. They have attracted many of the most ambitious artists. One of
them being Jean Arp, the sculpture of the "Classical Sculpture." This art piece is the Subject of the paper, and is located in the Dallas Museum of
Art. It was released to the public in 1960, and has been favorite ever sense. The piece has such a deep meaning and so did his life.
Jean Arp is a famous sculptor, painter, and poet. He spent the early years of his life writing and publishing poetry. After writing poetry for nearly thirty
years Jean found something that sparked his interest. This new–found passion was art. After discovering this new passion, he turned all his focus onto
his art. Jean moved to Paris to attend the academy of Julian, an art school centered on sculpture and painting. Julian was the first of many art schools he
would attend throughout his life. After attending Julian, he began a partnership that would last a life time. Jean and Sophie became head collaborators
on their new art creations. Together they created abstract multimedia works. They called these works Duo–collages. They later married, and remained
married for 21 years. However, a death ended their partnership. Sophie died January 13th 1943. After her death Jean decided to dedicate his work to
her. This is why most of his art works after January thirteenth are of the abstract female nude. Including the sculpture "Classical Sculpture."

Naturalistic Sculpture In Ancient Greece
Looking back on sculpture in Ancient Greece, the first examples of a naturalistic form are seen. Stone and heart were melded to display humans and
animals as they exist in nature. Earlier artists, influenced by the Ancient Egyptians, saw sculpture as a way to admire human perfection in figures
known as Kouros. In 492 BC, Persia invaded Athens and in their wake, most of the existing Kouros were destroyed. During the time period spanning
from Archaic Greece to Classical Greece, artists developed the desire to create figures inspired by the world allowing the more detailed style of
naturalistic form to take motion. Due to the eradication of Archaic sculptures during the Persian wars, Greek Sculpture was renewed from stiff Kouros
into figures instilled ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through looking at the human body, studying its contractions and bone structure, a realistic representation could be created. Part of this included
having the correct proportion of head to body. Polykleitos, while perfecting his own idea of what male nude proportions should be, formed a
climax toward the naturalistic form in regards to order within chaos. Included in his work and multiple others, the naturalistic form expanded on the
practice of arrested motion. This uses contrapposto and the tensing and relaxing of muscles in response to the movement of the body in order to
create the feeling that the figure was just frozen in time. Arrested Motion was a major shift from Archaic Kouros that appeared to be stiff in their
movement and timeless overall. To achieve a Naturalistic form, the sculptor first had to extend his representation of reality. This included the use of
a more complex system of symmetry to give the appearance of uniformity yet achieve parallel lines and a balance between compression and
stretching. The Discobolus by Myron had a certain view to see the perfection of his work while at the rest of the viewpoints only jumbles of lines
were produced. This displays that to extend reality some natural elements needed to be sacrificed. The Naturalistic form allowed the figures to appear
alive and have the illusion of perfection within

Roman Sculpture
Roman sculpture and painting differed mostly for the fact that the status were used to record major events and also as realistic portrait. As per the
paintings, they were used much as decor and to cover walls than anything else.
The picture depicts a heroic sculpture of Augustus, a military leader who was the first Emperor of the Roman Empire, controlling Imperial Rome from
27 BC until his death in AD 14 (Hays, 2008). Roman sculptures were focused in representing the real form of those being portrayed. However, in the
case of rulers, they attempted to make it strong god–like images. Unlike the Greek, which usually tried to created an idealistic human form through
their sculptures. The Romans reflected events and lifestyles of the time these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Shelby, 2016). Roman paintings were used mostly as wall decoration. They "were painted directly on the walls of their rooms, and also on portable
panels" (Gunther, n.d.). The main idea was to bring their windowless interior dark rooms to life, totally changing aspects of these living spaces. A
variety of painting art forms is seeing throughout Roman ancient history. Nevertheless, Frescoes was the most popular approach seeing in the interior
design of ancient Roman buildings. "Fresco painting, method of painting water–based pigments on freshly applied plaster, usually on wall surfaces.
The colours, which are made by grinding dry–powder pigments in pure water, dry and set with the plaster to become a permanent part of the wall"

give the impression of a window view. As commonly seen within the Romans, such art paintings were equally a privilege of the wealthy ones. There
are four styles seen throughout the history of Roman paintings:
"
First Style originated in the early 2d century BC. It is an imitation of marble veneering, in which the painted decoration resembles slabs of colored
marble
Second Style began in the early 1st century B, opening up the wall by providing an illusion of windows and porticos which looked outward onto

Descriptive Essay On Sculptures
As the sun started to settling down, you walked into a wonderful museum full of figure sculptures to which the natural spot light shines from the sun hit
the wonderful master pieces. Then you walk more deeply inside an exhibition room, suddenly, you notice that you are surrendered by medium size to
large sculptures. One sculpture that is space equally to one an another, but they all have no cloth on. As you tend to get closer and closer and the
story of the sculptures reveal more details of what is the sculpture tell you like a story telling. Even the details of the bodies tend to give of a more

main sculptures which is in order from finest pick from the museum and three from the class room lecture. They are The Lansdown Athlete, the
Roman copy of the Lysippos, and Roman copy after a Greek original by Praxiteles, Hermes and the Infant Dionysos. From my opinion is that the
sculptures are in nude because they tell us that the sculptures are goddesses or a recreation of a person that is not real. The nude sculpture is one
who is not wearing cloth or less who which it shows our body parts. Most of the sculptures are made out of stone, marble, and bronze. They are shown
in large structure or a human size. All figures are mostly made in Greek Late Classical to Hellenistic, thus the artist show more details in human body

Thirdly, the sculpture is very accessible; the empty space around the sculpture provides students an opportunity to go closer and explore the sculpture
in more detail. The space behind the sculpture allows walking around to view the sculpture from different angles. It is clear to recognize the sculpture
as Venus from the front side, however, when standing really close to the backside or the side face of thesculpture, the image of Venus is really vague.
since the carving is not very in detailed at those faces. As a result, rather than being regarded as Venus, the sculpture can be seen as anything. The

A Comparison Of Dionysus : Roman Sculptures
The stone sculpture is made from marble. The artist remains unknown, but it was restored by the Italian Vincenzo Pacetti, an eighteenth–century
sculptor. It is a Roman copy of a Greek work of the fourth century B.C. It is a medium size statue with a height of 82 34 in. (210.2 cm). Vincenzo
Pacetti (1746–1820) was an Italian sculptor dedicated to restoring classical sculptures and then sell them to the rich.
The culture where the sculpture was produced was Roman. During this period of time, Dionysus was a religious cult figure at the temples. As a
mythological personification, Dionysus was believed to be a youthful, joyful and effeminate figure. He was the God of wine, celebration and divine
intoxication of power. The female figure standing next to him is Spes, the Goddess of hope, who brought harmony to society. Both statues together
represented peace, calm and prosperity to the lands.
During this period of time, the sculptures were produced first to celebrate ancient mystery cults and sacrifices of victorious military heroes and then
to value the role of the Gods and Goddesses by their power and divinity. As more divine they were, it was considered to be a more religious sculpture
piece. The sculptures of Gods and Goddesses were built as a form of remembering them through the years and their impact in the Roman society.
The statue of Dionysus is influenced by Greek classical styles because it has a contrapposto pose with the right arm and right leg stiff and the

1. "Bronze statuette of Aphrodite"
Date: late 2nd or 1st century B.C.Culture: Greece This statue of Aphrodite shows the dedication the Greeks had to their gods. The bronze goddess,
holding her right arm in the air, gives off a powerful attitude. As the pose itself of the statue is not bland and more active, it gives the impression that
this was created during the classical period of Greece when sculpture began having more relaxed, natural poses. The lack of more painstaking muscle
and bone structure probably places it in the earlier part of the classical period though. What is most intriguing about the sculpture is the white eyes she

The materials used were alabaster and limestone. The figure itself is roughly cut with clasped praying hands, unproportional body and shoulder sizes,
and large unnatural eyes. Again, this lack of realism is significant to the time; the focus was not on the realistic portrayal of who it was fashioned for,
but what ritual and religious purpose it served.
4. "Limestone grave relief with two sphinxes" Date: late 5th century B.C.Culture: Greece The sphinxes were popular mythical creatures, playing their
part in myths and legends and stories throughout time–including the story of Oedipus, and the riddle of the sphinx. The beauty of the sphinx in this
piece shows how much was passed around throughout Western culture. Egypt also memorialized the sphinx through wall art and sculpture, and this
continuation (despite the nonexistence of the sphinx as a real creature) shows how much truly does carry on throughout history. This relief piece has
subtle dimension, making it low relief rather than high relief.
5. Terracotta statuette of a standing woman Date: late 4th century B.C.Culture: Greek, Corinthian The woman, with the delicately "draped" clothing

body. The Hellenistic era was very focused on making sculpture perfect from all angles

How To The Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum
I went to the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum for my art experience project. I was impressed with the amount of statues I was able to see
in one place. A majority of them seem to have been created and donated by the Fredericks family themselves. As I said before the amount of statues in
this little space is impressive, however my first impression is the feeling of claustrophobia.
The statues are packed in fairly tight and the space overall doesn't seem to be well utilized. The room it was in did however provide an ample amount
of natural light from the large windowed wall to the north. This coupled with the recessed lighting did a good job of lighting the statues facing the
northern wall. Unfortunately though, some of the statues are facing the southern wall and lose a little detail to not being as well lit from only the
recessed lighting. The contrast between well–lit and dimly–lit does lend to contrast in light and shadow for the statues facing the east and west walls.
The contours of these statues are much more defined because of the line of contrast so they seem to draw me in the most. I also get this cold feeling,
even though the floors are more of a warm/neutral color. I believe this is due to the lack of a large amount of the statues not being colored at all. The
few that are colored are just antiqued bronze so they are mostly that powder blue/green color. The lack of color though, I feel, is intended to make a
point.
It seems as though the artist meant for

Sculpture Review of Spartacus Breaking His Chains Essay
Sculpture Review of Spartacus Breaking His Chains
This nineteen century sixteen inch sculpture was created by Denis Foyatier. The sculpture is of Spartacus, a man who served as a leader in a revolt
against slavery. This statue was composed of bronze and could be distinguished by its fine polish and style. This bronzestatue stood in a mobile upright
position, the left foot extended forward, the arms crossed around the lower chest region. Foyatier succeeded in producing a vivid and convincing
figure by using the techniques of shape, texture and details. His techniques suggest and appeal to a sense of intense power and vigor.

The tenseness of his muscles is a clear suggestion that Spartacus was about to or already performed some sort of movement. There is also a dominant
"s" like shape runs through the body beginning from above the knees and continues until the neck, this "s" like curvature provides the figure with a
sense of autonomous life.
The rough contrasting texture Foyatier uses makes Spartacus much more realistic and proves to be very effective. His use of highly stylized polish
contrasts the shades of the arms and legs. He uses a lighter shade of polish around Spartacus's muscles; these highly polished areas provide sheen and
highlight strength and power. The use of different shades of polish is imperative to the sculpture because it allows his spectators to focus on the more
central parts of Spartacus. The uneven curly texture in the hair also plays an important role; it adds a more realistic image to Spartacus's identity. The
use of the different textures generates liveliness and animates a sense of energy compressed within Spartacus's quiet pose.
Foyatier uses careful detail in his presentation. His details of Spartacus's face are very effective as it creates a mood and sets an ideal atmosphere for
the sculpture. One can detect Spartacus's raging mood by the intense glare of his eyes, the

Relief Sculpture : Relief Sculptures
Relief sculpture appeared in many different cultures all throughout time. Relief sculpture can be created and found in many different forms and each
culture's relief consists of distinctive factors. Relief sculpture is different from a more well–known form, known as freestanding sculptures, because
relief sculptures remain part of the background, however, they do project from it. Just like freestanding sculptures, relief can be made from carving or
casting from many different types of material, such as; wood, ivory, bronze and stone. Relief is also categorized into different categories by how much
the subject projects from the background. There are three different categories which include low, middle and high relief. Low reliefsculpture, ... Show

The Warka Vase (Fig. 2
–5. P.35) is the oldest known Sumerian narrative relief sculpture. The vase was found in the Inanna temple, located in Uruk,
Iraq, which is modern day Warka. It is dated 3200–3000 BCE and currently resides in the National Museum of Iraq. The attributes of the vase include
a narrow base, that supports the tall, beige structure. The vase is large, being over 3 feet tall and is made from the mineral Alabaster. The vase is in
low relief because the subject projects slightly from its background. The subject of this relief is a religious festival that was held to honor the
goddess of Uruk, Inanna. The vase is divided into three main registers that separate the different stories that are depicted in the narrative relief. At the
top is the largest band that inhabits a woman in a headdress, some historians think it is Inanna, however others believe it to be a priestess. Next to the
woman, on the left, is a naked man that is depositing offerings in the goddess's shrine. To the right of the woman a clothed male figure is shown,
which art historians believe to be the priest–king. These characters shown together symbolize the importance of their role to the Mesopotamian society
and appear to represent marriage occurring between the two of them. The middle banner includes naked men that are circling the vase while holding
overflowing baskets of votive offerings to Inanna. Like the man depicted in the top register, they too

Two Different Ways Of Carving A Sculpture And Casting
Carving a sculpture and casting are two different ways of making beautiful works of art. You can do so much more with carving because of all the
different tools that you can use, while casting is more limited to what you can do you can still make a great sculpture. Casting art can be used with a
medium which is clay, they use clay as a foundation and then they will use bronze as a permanent material which people will usually see during
casting works. You don't always have to use bronze as a casting material but they are recommended because of ancient China, Greece,Rome, and also
some parts of Africa, this is because these place developed bronze to work well with casting. For the mold of the sculpture is using "clay diluted with

The Sculpture On South Campus At Moravian College
The sculpture on South Campus at Moravian College commonly known as Moravian Roots One and Two, who was created by Steve Tobin in 2010
has a significant meaning behind the moderately new sculpture. There are two of the same types of sculptures in the same place, just distance away
from one another. This sculpture seems to be abstract, since we are taking the form of what it looks like to create a meaning, which can be
something different in other people's eyes. The sculpture is a dark black shade that naturally blends in with the surroundings, therefore making it
blend in with its natural surroundings. The negative space between the roots are easily seen since its roots are based in various directions,
showing us how far the roots of the sculpture and realistically Moravian has grown. There is no base or pedestals for these two sculptures who go
hand in hand together, but it is roughly around five feet standing upward and going in sporadic directions, to signify differences. They are roundly
shaped with carved pointed edges giving the image that it is like a tree root or branch, being slightly pointed on the top. The inner parts of the "tree
roots" are textured off to have a little dots making it a bit rougher than the soft and smooth outer sides that we see from a distance. There seems to be
no said real front or back side to this piece because the tree roots go in different directions, therefore giving the observer a chance to decide which way
they would like to view it.

Change And Growth: Sculpture Analysis
Change and Growth For my sculpture analysis, I went to downtown Naperville. While walking through downtown Naperville, I saw many different
sculptures but the one that caught my attention was the "Change and Growth" sculpture. This sculpture was made by Jack Holme. When I first saw
this sculpture, I knew I've never seen anything else like it. This sculpture has so many visual and design elements. Jack Holme's sculpture is supposed
to represent how the city of Naperville has changed throughout the years and I think it does a great job of showing it. The first visual element I
noticed about this sculpture was the mass. This sculpture is about 10 feet tall and has an open form of mass. I think it is an open form because with
this sculpture, not only can you just look at it from a distance, you can also go inside the sculpture and see that the exterior and interior of the sculpture
are different. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I think the method that was used to create this sculpture was assembling. I think this sculpture is a construction because it is made up of pieces of
metal that seem to be welded together. It seems like the artist also took large pieces of metal and was able to bend and weld them to his liking in
order to create the exterior of the sculpture. Then he must have took his time to carefully bend and weld the together various pieces of metal to make
the different tools that are on the interior of the sculpture. This sculpture, "Change and Growth", by Jack Homle truly does represent the change and
growth that the town of Naperville has gone through. One way it does that is, by starting of as a plain, simple sculpture. Then the more time you
spend looking at it and exploring it, the more you see the sculpture turn into something complex and interesting. I think it perfectly explains the town
of Naperville. Naperville might have started off as a plain and simple town but over time it grew to be such a complex, and interesting

The Parthenon Sculptures
The British Government have an obligation to give back the Parthenon Sculptures in the British Museum back to the Greek government. This is due to
the importance the Statues have in Greek Culture, the importance of having the Acropolis once again united, and the high level of evidence supporting
the claim that the British stole the statues. This essay will aim to explain each of these points, a well as the British Rebuttals. Not only this, but a
recount will be made on the attempt made by myself and a classmate as we attempted to replicate this debate and negotiate for a peaceful outcome.
Since 1983, after the transition from Post–Civil War Greece to the Modern Day Democratic Greece, the Greek Government has demanded the return of
its ancient Parthenon Sculptures from the British Museum in London. After Greece regained its independence and government, it has demanded for the
stolen statues to be returned to Greece so they can be united with the rest of the Parthenon and the Acropolis. Not only this, but the Greeks put the
legality of the British's taking of the statues under question, stating it was through secrecy and conspiracy this was achieved. The British argue that
under law, they legally bought the statues from the Ottomans (The then rulers of Greece) in 1811 with Lord Elgin. Not only this, but they state that
they wish to preserve the statues in London, to showcase to the world mankind's greatest achievements. While both sides offer valid and tenacious
arguments,

Have You Ever Admired A Sculpture? Did You Wonder Why It
Have you ever admired a sculpture? Did you wonder why it was there or how and when it was created? Well I sure have. A sculpture, by definition, is
a three–dimensional piece of art. Sculpture is one of the most oldest art forms dating back over 35,000 years ago. There are many methods, tools, and
products used to make sculptures. The eighteenth and nineteenth century was a time for many conflicts about sculpting and different forms of
sculpting were created. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, sculptures were getting new styles added to them. Some of these styles were
added in different periods including the Neoclassicism, Romanticism, and Realism periods. Neoclassicism, also known as the "classical period", is

A third period of Sculpture styles were in the Realism period. The artistic movement, realism, is basically the opposite of the Romanticism period.
Instead of dramatic emotions and supernatural elements like Romanticism, Realism tries to keep the sculptures more truthful and without artificial
elements being portrayed in the art. An example of a realism sculpture would be the very famous, The Thinker by Auguste Rodin. Auguste Rodin was
an infamous , 19th century, French, sculptor. During the eighteenth and nineteenth century, conflicts about sculpting arose. Artists started to find
themselves cut off from society, but even more than artists, sculptors were taking more of the wrath and this was because it took more to fund
Sculpture projects than any other project. To make a sculpture you had to have the permission of the town councils and committees and they frankly,
had no patience for sculpture. Sculptors came to terms with this problem, it forced them to work in two different styles of sculpting, a more of an
academic art style for public commission and then their personal, more spontaneous projects in their studios. Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth
century there were several sculptures that left behind legacies and changed the way people look at sculpture even today. These sculptures came from
many sculptors that lived

Mythical Creatures in the Sculpture, Legend and Myth by...
I.Description
The sculpture Legend and Myth by Damien Hirst is a pair of sculptures depicting two mythical creatures. Legend is a sculpture of the legendary
creature known as a Pegasus, and its counterpart, named Myth, which is a sculpture of a white unicorn. The medium that was used to create the two
sculptures was a combination of painted gold, silver, and also bronze. The sculpture Legend measures to be 4575 x 2590 x 2260 mm or 180.1 x 102 x
89 in and was sculpted in 2010, while its companion, Myth, measures 3590 x 2800 x 808 mm or 141.3 x 110.2 x 31.8 in and was sculpted in 2011,
which is close to the same size as the average horse you would see in a farmyard. According to my research, the last location that these two
sculptures were displayed was at the Chatsworth House in England. Both sculptures are flayed on the left side of their bodies, showing the anatomy
that lies within the creatures. The two sculptures face away from each other in show horse stances. Both have the flayed part that is showing the
inner parts of the creatures facing opposite directions as well. The color of the skin on these sculptures is white, and on the flayed portions of them,
the portions that are to be depicted as muscle are red, while the part that is to be bone is a golden color.

  • 2. Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum Details of the museum permanent collection of sculptures of the 70–year career of Detroit–based public sculptor Marshall M. Fredericks (1908–1998) Viewed at the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum (September 5, 2014) The Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum contains the artwork of the most prolific sculptors of the twentieth century. Museum features a unique collection of more than two thousand works that span the 70–year career of Detroit–based public sculptor Marshall M. Fredericks (1908–1998). He is known nationally and internationally for his impressive monumental figurative sculpture, public memorials, fountains, portraits, and medals. The art gallery was full of sculptures that are all in white made by plaster. On the walls, different kinds of sculptures were hung. Some of them were religious but most of them reflect daily activities and some of them bring us into a world of imagination and dreams. As I walk through the gallery looking at the sculptures I read information on the label attached to the sculptures. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fredericks was commissioned to sculpt a 6–foot–tall crucifix, but instead designed this 28–foot full–scale model, for a bronze to be placed at the Indian River Catholic Shrine in Indian River, Michigan. The sculpture reminds me of church because it represents the crucifixion of Jesus. It had a facial expression that reveals apparent emotions of pain and sadness. The size and placing of the sculpture up on the wall is a dominant settling force for the eye, and it contrasts well with other sculptures around it. The white plaster on the sculpture establishes a powerful element as a visual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Power And Pathos : Bronze Sculpture Of The Hellenistic World Power and Pathos: Bronze Sculpture of the Hellenistic World Amid the Hellenistic period from the passing of Alexander the Great in 323 B.C. until the foundation of the Roman Empire in 31 B.C., the medium of bronze drove imaginative advancement. Sculptors moved past Classical norms, supplementing accustomed subjects and romanticized frames with reasonable renderings of physical and passionate states. To achieve this, using the discovery of bronze for art, they start to create pieces of art composed bronze and other alloys. Bronze–surpassing marble with its rigidity, intelligent impacts, and capacity to hold fine detail–was utilized for element organizations, stunning showcases of the naked body, and realistic articulations of age and character. Cast from combinations of copper, tin, lead, and different components, bronze statues were delivered by presenting honorific representations of rulers and natives populated city squares, and pictures of divine beings, legends, and mortals swarmed havens. The Seated Boxer and the Statue of an Athlete are two sculptures that encompass the complete aspects of the figures through representation and materiality. Made in the Hellenistic period, when an affection for authenticity made a capable development on prior Classical optimism, the boxer is incredibly sensible. The statue depicts a boxer situated with his arms laying on his knees, his head swung to one side and somewhat raised with mouth open. The figure is stripped aside from his ... • 4. The Sculptures And Frescoes Of Women The sculptures, carvings, and frescoes of women that we have in the ancient world I think make it hard to get an exact depiction on what the roles and statues of women really were. There are a lot of archeologists that devote their lives to the study of reading these paintings. I feel like most of the time even the experts guess could be as good as a novice because even with art sometimes there are hidden meanings that only the artist knows. Although most of these sculptures and frescoes seem to have so much detail that make it easier for us to at least try and depict what their meanings are. The sculptures help us go back in time and figure out what our ancestors went through to get us to where we are now. I think sculptures, carvings, and frescoes of the ancient world show how women are very supportive and submissive to their husbands, took on more feminist roles in their communities, and show their statues based on how they dressed. In most pictures of women from the ancient world they seem to be shown as being very supportive of their husbands. Although women now are supportive of their husbands, it seems as though in the pictures this was only a one way support system. There was one statue made which was shown in our book, The Humanistic Tradition, where the queen is standing next to the king with her arms around him (Fiero, 2006, p. 24). I think this picture is a great example of how women might have been the emotional support for their husbands. The picture shows ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Sculpture and Donatello Donatello (1386–1466) was a master of sculpture in bronze and marble and was considered one of the greatest Italian Renaissance artists of his time. There is much more to know about him, though then the name alone. He has created some of the greatest works of art, not only in the Italian renaissance, but human history as well. A lot is known about his life and career but little is known about his character and personality. Donatello never married and seems to be a man of В‘simple tastes'. Patrons often found him hard to deal with and he demanded a lot of artistic freedom. Early career. Francis are outstanding and the finest of the reliefs are the four miracles of St. Anthony. Donatello was great in handling large numbers of figures (one relief has more than one hundred), which predicts the construction standards of the High Renaissance. Donatello was not doing much work the last three years at Padua, the work for the S. Antonio altar was unpaid for and the Gattamelata monument not placed until 1453. Offers of other places reached him from Mantua, Modena, Ferrara, and even Naples, but nothing came of them. He was clearly passing through a crisis that prevented him from working. He was later quoted as saying that he almost died "among those frogs in Padua." In 1456 the Florentine physician Giovanni Chellini noted he had successfully treated the master for a protracted illness. Donatello only completed two works between 1450 and 1455, the wooden statue "St. John the Baptist" and a figure of Mary Magdalen. Both works show new reality; Donatello's formerly powerful bodies have become withered and spidery. When the " Magdalen" was damaged in the 1966 flood at Florence, restoration work revealed the original painted surface, including realistic flesh tones and golden highlights throughout the saint's hair. Late Florentine period. During his absence, a new generation of sculptors who excelled in the treatment of marble surfaces had rose in Florence. With the change in Florentine taste, all of

Assyrian Sculptures When we talked about the similarities between Sumerian and Assyrian sculptures, both of them are some kind of art that's been engraved to wood stone and other objects, and the important part of both of them are that they deal with God(s), those were not just any engraved object they had a very deep meaning for the people of that time, even nowadays. The differences, Sumerian may have been the first to talk through picture or tell stories using pictures/art. On the other hand Assyrian sculptures I would say it just upgraded version of Sumerian sculptures, which talked or told stories using picture but in lots of different area, it mainly showed art/picture of God(s). • 9. Reflection Of A Look At The Washed Ashore Sculpture Exhibit This semester I attended the Washed Ashore Sculpture Exhibit. It is located on the campus of Iowa State University in the Reiman Gardens. This event is related to Humanities because exhibit houses many art sculptures made of trash. The trash is plastics and other house hold items that have washed ashore in Oregon and Northern California. The purpose of the exhibit is to raise awareness to the damages of plastic to the environment, what plastic can do to animals and ecosystems, demonstrate how nonbiodegradable plastic is, and how much plastic there is in the ocean. The exhibit is set up so that right as you walk it the butterfly exhibit entrance is off to your left, and the research facility is off to your right. In between them is a hallway filled with Jellyfish made of plastic water bottles and caps and other trash. At the end of the hallway is a pair of doors that leads to a greenhouse that a bunch of plants and a large jellyfish. When you go outside, there is a pathway that leads to each of the gardens and ten sculptures that is featured inside the Washed AshoreSculpture Exhibit. I had four favorite sculptures in the gardens. One of my favorite pieces was the Polar Bear. Right as you approached the entrance to the park, you are greeted by the polar bear. The polar bear represented the results of global warming and loss of land for polar bears to live and hunt on. Another was the Giant Jellyfish. • 10. Statues and Sculpture: An Art Form that Depicts Human History Art Stands Tall for Human Values In 2008 a group of archaeologist unearthed what could now be the world's oldest statue. This larger than life statuette stands at whopping 2 ВЅ inches tall with an estimated carving date from 35,000 to 40,000 years ago from a mammoth tusk. The form of the statuette is that of female figure missing her head and feet with a primary focus on reproductive organs. Due to the pornographic nature of the statue archaeologist believe that the statue's purpose and function is to represent longevity and fertility. No matter if you believe man crawled from primordial ooze or if a being of higher authority created man, humans have continued to express emotion, experiences and values through the artistic expression... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Starting in 1870, artist August Bartholdi made a trip to the United States to search out a place to erect the statue and begin the initial design. The form of the statue is actually created from two separate forms. The first form used to create the statue is that of a neoclassical sculpture of the Roman goddess Libertas who represented freedom and democracy. The second form used in the statue is that of the fictional female character, Columbia who many at the time believe carried the embodiment of America. The main function of the statue is to represent individual liberty and freedom from slavery. Liberty has always been a highly held value in the United States so it would be important that the function of this statue represented that value. The statue's function of freedom and liberty is carried throughout the sculpture. You will find the date of the independence placed upon the tablet she carries. At her feet lay broken shackles from slavery. Upon her crown are seven rays that represent freedom to all the seven continent's citizens who come to this country seeking freedom. Her right arm is raised in the air above her head carrying a torch that light's the way to that freedom. Her outer skin is covered in thin copper sheets that over time patina giving the statue her green hue. • 11. Greek Figurative Sculpture Shaquetta Marshall Greek Figurative Sculpture Why was change so important during the different periods of Ancient Greek art? That's a question that can easily be answered through research on Greek art but actually understanding the flow of change within the different periods allows people to grasp the enticing change of the artworks. The idea of change simply gives artists a way to express themselves, not only for attracting the eye to unique wonders in the world that occurred, but to also give a sense of idealism. Artistic figures in Ancient Greek art were made by artists that created the figures based off of the ideal human form and how they believe artwork should be made within that period. The artwork was not made to be understood literally,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Yet the kouroi, which is a style made during the archaic period, reveal further realism, obviously depicting that the human structure was more important than the overall events that took place during this period of ancient greek art. The kouros, plural for kouroi, was the depiction of young men, going from the basic to those that were almost exact demonstrations. These stylistic depictions were used to indicate feelings and emotions using figurative gestures. For example, Apollo, a god in Ancient Greek art, compatible with many sculptures of the perpetual youth known as the kouroi, is rendered across the Archaic period showing the deified male physique, constructed on orders of segments and symbolizing the ability of somatic allure. The artists that created the sculpture of Apollo really put emphasis on the figurative gesture of the torso and arms, revealing a sentimental posture of what he stands for as an idealistic god. Although Apollo expressed the advancement of the likeness of human composition throughout the archaic stage, the young male kouros were not soldiers, they were emblematics of the worshiper that were contributing a more indefinite and inaudible assistance to a god.The idea the artist had was to not only show off the ideal male form, but to also allow for a sculpture that in a way represented no other than a "mere mortal", for those who saw the figure as an enticing change to the span of time, where beauty and figurative emotion of the perfect male configuration meant alot to people during the archaic period of ancient greek ... "Kritios boy statue was small then life size standing a height of 1.24 m "(William Biers). This sculpture was different in the sense that it was a change in the way they showed a more realistic sculpture. "The growing in interest in realism and idealization of the human body can be seen in the sculpture Discobolus by Myron."(British Museum). The Sculpture Of The Etruscan- Roman Tradition In the early official and private portrait of the Etruscan– Roman tradition, the achievement of sculpture from the identity of the ideal Republican demonstrated motivation behind the virtus, veristic, and gravitas qualities. The Etruscan Roman portrait sculpture of the "Patrician Carrying Portrait Busts of Two Ancestors" is a life–size marble statue that was dated to the period of the Emperor Augustus somewhere at the end of the 1st century BCE or the beginning of the 1st century CE, reflecting the practices that have originated from the past by Polybius. This Etruscan– Roman piece of art is detailed all around, but also ideal as depictions look influential throughout the generations from the living patrician man holding the lifeless portrait busts of the two very distinct ancestors. The surface of the marble used to carve the male figure, and the portrait heads is very smooth and pale in colour, as the natural agent simulates' realistic complexion through the veins present within the marble creating a three– dimensional illusion of meticulous naturalistic rendition of the human anatomy engraved with relief detail all around. The function of the portrait sculpture was to have a permanent documentation motivated by the realistic commemoration of one's ancestors in a religious and ritualistic funeral use of death masks, that would have been cast from the face of the deceased. This became an obvious style of presenting recognizable prestige that conveyed the significance of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Using common since again, it is highly unlikely a basic infantry combatant would have had such equipment. The bare minimum this tells of at least the success this individual had. My preference in this case would undeniably have to be the sculpture that is void of all color. In the absence of such color while we are left with questions about the individual/s it seems to be in less quantity then when we have colored schemes involved. I like not having to assign class, rank, social and economic status to the individual. In this way the piece of art is left to be marveled at not by what he was perceived at during his era but rather for what we see it as today. I get an individual fearless of battle yet elegant in his approach. Barbara Hepworth's Epic Works Changed The Face Of Sculpture Barbara Hepworth's Epic Works In the article, "Jeanette Winterson: Barbara Hepworth's Epic Works Changed the face of Sculpture," the author introduces us to the woman who interchanged the look of sculpting. Winterson states, "She wanted something that people would actually look at, rather than walk past, a piece where the meaning was inherent, rather than representational or symbolic". That statement goes to show that Barbara Hepworth wanted to contribute something that was different from other sculptors. Barbara Hepworth's work was captivating, engaging and she was autonomous. Almost all Greek sculptures are of nude subjects. As the first society to focus on nude subjects, Greek sculptors attempted to "depict man in what they believed was the image of the gods and so would come to celebrate the body by striving for verisimilitude or true – likeness (realism and naturalism!)."(Riffert) Not only did the Greeks celebrate the human form in their art but also in everyday life. Their "Ideal" was "a body capable of enduring all efforts, either of the racecourse or of bodily strength...this is why the athletes in the pentathlon are the most beautiful." (Tufts) This description of the "Ideal" person given by Aristotle reflects the attitude of the majority of ancient Greeks. People were not judged solely on their minds but rather strong emphasis was given to the body. This emphasis given to the body was given to the nude body. It is understandable that we question why nude art was so accepted by the Greeks, as they were the pioneers in this field. The answer lies in the everyday life of the people. It was commonplace for Greek men to exercise, go to war, and generally go about their daily business in the nude or scantly clothed (Boardman 276). While male nudity was straightforward and hiding nothing, female nudity was more reserved. In the first fully nude female sculpture, Aphrodite of Knidos by Praxitales c. 350–340bc., "the 'feminine principle' (is invented) which as a demure pose where the knees are brought together and sometimes the hand is discreetly before the genitals"(Riffert). In historic period, carving is the technique of changing shape of a material which the artist subtracts or cuts away from a solid material to reach the desired form by use of tools such as knives, chisels tipped power cutters, and chainsaws. This kind of Art work, can be time consuming and painstaking method because of the hard and heavy materials, such as stones or other marble that are often used. However, artists also carve from softer substances such as wood and soap depending on recourses and cost. Sculpturing requires innovative or intellectual ideas. Throughout ancient period, there have been plenty of pieces of art that are appalling, shocking, and created quite an abstract reaction, yet they are great works of Art. In addition, there are pieces of Art sculpture with quality in which immediate impression you have upon seeing, hearing, and touching will reflect emotional response within you. This takes place before your instinct recognizes the content of the work and starts to work out meanings and messages. I believe sculpture has to include some of the elements and principles of the language of Art in order to be recognized. The sculptor needs the structure they present to be successfully communicating the idea and present the 'beauty' and harmony of the work. I have used the example as modeling technique, the sculptor manipulate soft materials to create a three–dimensional form. Unlike carving, it requires soft substances that can be easily and rapidly shaped by the sculptor's hands. Most frequents material used for modeling is clay; however, plaster, papier–mache, and wax are also common material. With the sculptures being constantly moved to different locations, they were granted permission to be permanently positioned at Crosby beach in 2005, despite some objections. Certain people believed that the figures were offensive and pornographic due to them being naked with genitalia on show. Through looking at the human body, studying its contractions and bone structure, a realistic representation could be created. Part of this included having the correct proportion of head to body. Polykleitos, while perfecting his own idea of what male nude proportions should be, formed a climax toward the naturalistic form in regards to order within chaos. Included in his work and multiple others, the naturalistic form expanded on the practice of arrested motion. This uses contrapposto and the tensing and relaxing of muscles in response to the movement of the body in order to create the feeling that the figure was just frozen in time. Arrested Motion was a major shift from Archaic Kouros that appeared to be stiff in their movement and timeless overall. To achieve a Naturalistic form, the sculptor first had to extend his representation of reality. This included the use of a more complex system of symmetry to give the appearance of uniformity yet achieve parallel lines and a balance between compression and stretching. The Discobolus by Myron had a certain view to see the perfection of his work while at the rest of the viewpoints only jumbles of lines were produced. The culture where the sculpture was produced was Roman. During this period of time, Dionysus was a religious cult figure at the temples. I was impressed with the amount of statues I was able to see in one place. A majority of them seem to have been created and donated by the Fredericks family themselves. As I said before the amount of statues in this little space is impressive, however my first impression is the feeling of claustrophobia. The statues are packed in fairly tight and the space overall doesn't seem to be well utilized. The room it was in did however provide an ample amount of natural light from the large windowed wall to the north. This coupled with the recessed lighting did a good job of lighting the statues facing the northern wall. Unfortunately though, some of the statues are facing the southern wall and lose a little detail to not being as well lit from only the recessed lighting. The contrast between well–lit and dimly–lit does lend to contrast in light and shadow for the statues facing the east and west walls. The contours of these statues are much more defined because of the line of contrast so they seem to draw me in the most. I also get this cold feeling, even though the floors are more of a warm/neutral color. I believe this is due to the lack of a large amount of the statues not being colored at all. The rough contrasting texture Foyatier uses makes Spartacus much more realistic and proves to be very effective. His use of highly stylized polish contrasts the shades of the arms and legs. The vase was found in the Inanna temple, located in Uruk, Iraq, which is modern day Warka. It is dated 3200–3000 BCE and currently resides in the National Museum of Iraq. The attributes of the vase include a narrow base, that supports the tall, beige structure. The vase is large, being over 3 feet tall and is made from the mineral Alabaster. The vase is in low relief because the subject projects slightly from its background. The subject of this relief is a religious festival that was held to honor the goddess of Uruk, Inanna. The vase is divided into three main registers that separate the different stories that are depicted in the narrative relief. At the top is the largest band that inhabits a woman in a headdress, some historians think it is Inanna, however others believe it to be a priestess. Next to the woman, on the left, is a naked man that is depositing offerings in the goddess's shrine. To the right of the woman a clothed male figure is shown, which art historians believe to be the priest–king. These characters shown together symbolize the importance of their role to the Mesopotamian society and appear to represent marriage occurring between the two of them. The middle banner includes naked men that are circling the vase while holding overflowing baskets of votive offerings to Inanna. Like the man depicted in the top register, they too ... • 33. Two Different Ways Of Carving A Sculpture And Casting Carving a sculpture and casting are two different ways of making beautiful works of art. You can do so much more with carving because of all the different tools that you can use, while casting is more limited to what you can do you can still make a great sculpture. Casting art can be used with a medium which is clay, they use clay as a foundation and then they will use bronze as a permanent material which people will usually see during casting works. You don't always have to use bronze as a casting material but they are recommended because of ancient China, Greece,Rome, and also some parts of Africa, this is because these place developed bronze to work well with casting. • 34. The Sculpture On South Campus At Moravian College The sculpture on South Campus at Moravian College commonly known as Moravian Roots One and Two, who was created by Steve Tobin in 2010 has a significant meaning behind the moderately new sculpture. There are two of the same types of sculptures in the same place, just distance away from one another. This sculpture seems to be abstract, since we are taking the form of what it looks like to create a meaning, which can be something different in other people's eyes. The sculpture is a dark black shade that naturally blends in with the surroundings, therefore making it blend in with its natural surroundings. The negative space between the roots are easily seen since its roots are based in various directions, showing us how far the roots of the sculpture and realistically Moravian has grown. There is no base or pedestals for these two sculptures who go hand in hand together, but it is roughly around five feet standing upward and going in sporadic directions, to signify differences. They are roundly shaped with carved pointed edges giving the image that it is like a tree root or branch, being slightly pointed on the top. The inner parts of the "tree roots" are textured off to have a little dots making it a bit rougher than the soft and smooth outer sides that we see from a distance. There seems to be no said real front or back side to this piece because the tree roots go in different directions, therefore giving the observer a chance to decide which way they would like to view it. ... • 35. Change And Growth: Sculpture Analysis Change and Growth For my sculpture analysis, I went to downtown Naperville. While walking through downtown Naperville, I saw many different sculptures but the one that caught my attention was the "Change and Growth" sculpture. This sculpture was made by Jack Holme. When I first saw this sculpture, I knew I've never seen anything else like it. This sculpture has so many visual and design elements. Jack Holme's sculpture is supposed to represent how the city of Naperville has changed throughout the years and I think it does a great job of showing it. The first visual element I noticed about this sculpture was the mass. This sculpture is about 10 feet tall and has an open form of mass. I think it is an open form because with this sculpture, not only can you just look at it from a distance, you can also go inside the sculpture and see that the exterior and interior of the sculpture are different. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I think the method that was used to create this sculpture was assembling. I think this sculpture is a construction because it is made up of pieces of metal that seem to be welded together. It seems like the artist also took large pieces of metal and was able to bend and weld them to his liking in order to create the exterior of the sculpture. Then he must have took his time to carefully bend and weld the together various pieces of metal to make the different tools that are on the interior of the sculpture. This sculpture, "Change and Growth", by Jack Homle truly does represent the change and growth that the town of Naperville has gone through. One way it does that is, by starting of as a plain, simple sculpture. Then the more time you spend looking at it and exploring it, the more you see the sculpture turn into something complex and interesting. I think it perfectly explains the town of Naperville. Naperville might have started off as a plain and simple town but over time it grew to be such a complex, and interesting ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. The Parthenon Sculptures The British Government have an obligation to give back the Parthenon Sculptures in the British Museum back to the Greek government. This is due to the importance the Statues have in Greek Culture, the importance of having the Acropolis once again united, and the high level of evidence supporting the claim that the British stole the statues. This essay will aim to explain each of these points, a well as the British Rebuttals. Not only this, but a recount will be made on the attempt made by myself and a classmate as we attempted to replicate this debate and negotiate for a peaceful outcome. Since 1983, after the transition from Post–Civil War Greece to the Modern Day Democratic Greece, the Greek Government has demanded the return of its ancient Parthenon Sculptures from the British Museum in London. After Greece regained its independence and government, it has demanded for the stolen statues to be returned to Greece so they can be united with the rest of the Parthenon and the Acropolis. Not only this, but the Greeks put the legality of the British's taking of the statues under question, stating it was through secrecy and conspiracy this was achieved. The British argue that under law, they legally bought the statues from the Ottomans (The then rulers of Greece) in 1811 with Lord Elgin. Not only this, but they state that they wish to preserve the statues in London, to showcase to the world mankind's greatest achievements. While both sides offer valid and tenacious arguments, ... • 37. Have You Ever Admired A Sculpture? Did You Wonder Why It Have you ever admired a sculpture? Did you wonder why it was there or how and when it was created? Well I sure have. A sculpture, by definition, is a three–dimensional piece of art. Sculpture is one of the most oldest art forms dating back over 35,000 years ago. There are many methods, tools, and products used to make sculptures. The eighteenth and nineteenth century was a time for many conflicts about sculpting and different forms of sculpting were created. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, sculptures were getting new styles added to them. Some of these styles were added in different periods including the Neoclassicism, Romanticism, and Realism periods. Neoclassicism, also known as the "classical period", is when some of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A third period of Sculpture styles were in the Realism period. The artistic movement, realism, is basically the opposite of the Romanticism period. Instead of dramatic emotions and supernatural elements like Romanticism, Realism tries to keep the sculptures more truthful and without artificial elements being portrayed in the art. An example of a realism sculpture would be the very famous, The Thinker by Auguste Rodin. Auguste Rodin was an infamous , 19th century, French, sculptor. During the eighteenth and nineteenth century, conflicts about sculpting arose. Artists started to find themselves cut off from society, but even more than artists, sculptors were taking more of the wrath and this was because it took more to fund Sculpture projects than any other project. To make a sculpture you had to have the permission of the town councils and committees and they frankly, had no patience for sculpture. Sculptors came to terms with this problem, it forced them to work in two different styles of sculpting, a more of an academic art style for public commission and then their personal, more spontaneous projects in their studios. Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth century there were several sculptures that left behind legacies and changed the way people look at sculpture even today. These sculptures came from many sculptors that lived ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Mythical Creatures in the Sculpture, Legend and Myth by... I.Description The sculpture Legend and Myth by Damien Hirst is a pair of sculptures depicting two mythical creatures. Legend is a sculpture of the legendary creature known as a Pegasus, and its counterpart, named Myth, which is a sculpture of a white unicorn. The medium that was used to create the two sculptures was a combination of painted gold, silver, and also bronze. The sculpture Legend measures to be 4575 x 2590 x 2260 mm or 180.1 x 102 x 89 in and was sculpted in 2010, while its companion, Myth, measures 3590 x 2800 x 808 mm or 141.3 x 110.2 x 31.8 in and was sculpted in 2011, which is close to the same size as the average horse you would see in a farmyard. According to my research, the last location that these two sculptures were displayed was at the Chatsworth House in England. Both sculptures are flayed on the left side of their bodies, showing the anatomy that lies within the creatures. The two sculptures face away from each other in show horse stances. Both have the flayed part that is showing the inner parts of the creatures facing opposite directions as well. The color of the skin on these sculptures is white, and on the flayed portions of them, the portions that are to be depicted as muscle are red, while the part that is to be bone is a golden color. II.Analysis Damien Hirst incorporated many elements of art into his creation Legend and Myth, including the form of the plinth that both of his sculptures stand upon. The plinth creates the ...
