6. DEMAND FOR THE SERVICES
• The internationally recognized standard ratio of Doctor to Nurse is 1: 2.5
(which means for every two Doctors a hospital needs 5 nurses).
• There is very good demand for trained Nurses not only within the Country but
also Overseas
• India faces an acute shortage of nursing staff with an estimated deficit of 2
million. In the public sector alone, an additional 140,000 staff nurse is
required. The nurse-population ratio is 1:2,500 compared with ratios of 1:150
to 1:200 in higher income nations. The nurse-doctor ratio is also poor – at 0.5
nurses per doctor compared with 3 or 5 per doctor in the USA and UK
respectively.
