• If you use material from books, journals, web sites,
etc in an assignment without referencing is called
plagiarism, and is regarded as a serious offence at
colleges and universities.

3. Microsoft Word has a powerful referencing
functionality which can be utilised to compile
and manage reference sources and create
Bibliographies.

4. Referencing….with Word 2007
• Located under the Reference tab
• Quick compilation of sources used within a document
• Addition of in-text references, placeholders and complete
bibliographies
• Automatic formatting
• Has limitations (discussed at the end of the session)

5. Referencing….Style
First choose a publishing style:
• Click the References Tab on the Ribbon
• Click the drop down box next to Style in the Citations &
Bibliography Group
• Choose the appropriate style.

6. Referencing…Adding a Source
• Click on the Insert Citation button
• Add New Source

7. Referencing…in-text referencing
• Every time a new source is added an in-text reference is placed at that
point in the body text
• Must make sure add new source at the correct point
• For example:
One method of demonstrating your analysis and understanding of a topic is
by giving a presentation (Clarke, 2005).

8. Referencing…Source templates
• If you are creating a New Source, choose the type of source (book,
Journal article, etc.) from the drop down list.

9. Referencing…Create a source
• Fill in the template; author, title, publisher etc.
• If you need additional fields, be sure to click the Show All
Bibliography Fields check box
• Click OK

• When a source has TWO or more authors cite both authors the first time
the source occurs.
• Subsequent citations use surname of first author followed by “et al.”
• NOT automatic using Word 2007
• When SIX or more authors cite using “et al.” in all in-text citations.

• End text must contain all authors
• Automatic in Word 2007

• If unsure of the source place a placeholder
• Can edit the placeholder later

• At any time it is possible to access the list of sources collated for the
document

 Sources can be edited, deleted or created
 Preview pane
 ‘Pick’ from previous sources and copy into current document

 At any time a bibliography can be added to the document
 Choose Bibliography or Works Sited (Reference List)

Bibliography vs Reference List
These two terms are often used interchangeably, but are actually two
different things.
A Bibiliography is a list of every resource you have used while doing your
research, even if it is cited or not.
A Reference List is a list of every resource that you have quoted from
(either directly or indirectly) in your assignment.
Items are listed in a Bibliography or a Reference List alphabetically by the
author (or by title, if there is no author) and have a hanging indent.

 Will need to manually indent
