OSCROSS
AWARD
2. THE CHALLENGE
2
Journalists have to be able to
tell their stories through
multiple platforms…
… but the complexity and unfamiliarity of
digital storytelling often prohibits creative
approaches.

3. THE CHALLENGE
3
It is hard to "play" with
concepts in a digital
environment.
Restraints:
time
expensive equipment
restrictive technology
lack of knowledge

How do we get students to think creatively about the possibilities of digital storytelling?
4. PRESENTING: THE OSCROSS AWARD
4
A Pitch Contest for Analog Storytelling with Arts and Crafts
Step 1: Students analyze various
scrollytelling projects as best
practice examples
Step 2: Given a certain topic,
they develop an innovative
scrollytelling concept using only
analog tools (paper, pens, scissors…)
Step 3: Students pitch their
concepts in front of their peers
and a jury…
Step 4: …to win the award. And
glory. And constructive
feedback.

7. ADVANTAGES OF THE OSCROSS AWARD
7
Neither special
knowledge nor
special technical
equipment is
required.
Motivation and fun is
guaranteed through the
incentive of competition.
8. RESULTS OF THE OSCROSS AWARD
8
The event of the Award
Ceremony breaks with the
classic teaching routine and
thus represents a highlight of
the semester.
Students are better at
understanding how digital
storytelling works by not only
analyzing it, but also
experimenting with it by
analogy.
Students enjoy learning and
can thus better memorize
what they have learned.
