TEACHING WRITING : FROM PICTURES TO STORY

  • 2. Language Basics 1. For a student to write a story in a paragraph or two, s/he has to know some basics. a. Mechanics. b. Sentence Formation.
  • 3. Language Basics 2. The Student must know to A. Title. B. Have a Main Idea (Theme). C. Write a Topic Sentence (Optional). D. Use Grammatical Sentences. E. Be Coherent & Cohesive. F. A Paragraph must have a proper Introduction, Body and Conclusion. (Exposition, Conflict & Climax, & Resolution).
  • 4. From Pictures to Story 1.
  • 5. From Pictures to Story 1. Vocabulary (Building Blocks). Hot, sun, thirsty, crow, desert. (Write on the board or show slide).
  • 6. From Pictures to Story 2.
  • 7. From Pictures to Story 2. Vocabulary. Search, searched, was searching. Water.
  • 8. From Pictures to Story 3.
  • 9. From Pictures to Story 3. Vocabulary. Found.  Jug.
  • 10. From Pictures to Story 4.
  • 11. From Pictures to Story 4. Vocabulary. Some, a little, not much.
  • 12. From Pictures to Story 5.
  • 13. From Pictures to Story 5. Vocabulary. Saw. Pebbles.
  • 14. From Pictures to Story 6.
  • 15. From Pictures to Story 6. Vocabulary. Put…in, drop…in, filled…with. Rose. Brim, level. High.
  • 16. From Pictures to Story 7.
  • 17. From Pictures to Story 7. Vocabulary. Drinks, drank, was drinking.  Happy, satisfied, full.
  • 18. From Pictures to Story 8.
  • 19. From Pictures to Story: Conclusion. Here is the example of a good Concluding Sentence . The Moral of the Story is, “Where there is a will, there is a way”.
  • 20. Ways to Teach. a. Teacher to Student Method. b. Group Activity (Interactive Methodology/Pedagogy).
  • 21. Evaluation Time. Done on the basis of a Rubric, on the spot. Creativity should not be penalized. (Ex: Point of view). The Teacher can give the Grades after showing the Students the Rubric. The Students produce a Final Draft without mistakes.
  • 22. Rubric for Evaluation. Title - 1 mark. Mechanics - 1. Theme - 2. Structure - 3. Cohesion & Coherence - 1. Grammar & Syntax - 2.
  • 23. A Brief Lesson Plan. Teacher -talk time. (35 minutes) Activity - Make groups. Students discuss and write story. Teacher facilitates. (20 minutes) Students read each other’s stories, pinned up after completion, on display board. (10 minutes) Correction & first round of grading. (Only suggestions given) Production of second draft. (5 minutes) Final grading & recapitulation. (15 minutes)
