THE MALL IN AMERICA Whenever we go out shopping or relaxing at malls, we actually don't see
or recognize any effects of malls as we mostly go there for these two reasons. Malls are an integral
part in the lives of America. They are shopping centers that have created a lot of buzz in many
writers. This is because we have more malls in America than high schools. Malls have received
praises from people like James J. Farrell, Jon Pahl and George Lewis who view malls as not only
shopping centers but also as places that provide a reflection of the American culture and serve as

love for admiration and beauty (p. 297). Despite the fact that most American men don't like going
into malls, they usually fall victims because they are also subject to groom themselves. George

The socioeconomic significance of malls is seen through visual culture, where the mall has become
a place to meet up with friends and family, on any day of the week – weekends being the busiest.
Hence "the mall has become a centre of life, where the most memorable moments, holidays and

malls I explored were the Toronto Eaton's Centre and Yorkdale Mall – both of which included over
200 stores, eateries, rainforest cafés, and a movie theatre. However what was evident about these
two malls apart from the rest included anti social behaviours despite families being grouped
together. Although people were together, the sense of togetherness was plastic just like the manikins
of store displays. It appeared as though families were shopping just as an excuse to go out as a
"family" even though children, teens and adults would disperse into the stores of their choice and
meet up at the end for a takeout meal, contacting each other through their phones. In addition to this
observation included the fact that families shopping with other families or family friends were more
of an exploitation of social and economic class. People being able to spend at stores like Michael
Kors, Coach, Tory Burch, Abercrombie & Fitch, Lululemon, Kate Spade and many more, without

Malls are not protected. This is an issue that needs to be resolved in the near future. Though not very
pondered, mall safety is a large concern in this country. Many people are unsuspecting of the
dangers when going to the mall. Teenagers should be watched by an adult until they turn eighteen.
By being accompanied by a guardian or an adult, teenagers are less likely to act out or cause trouble.
A constant eye will discourage any unorderly behavior. If the teenagers in the mall the day they set

happened. Teenagers can be influenced to do the right thing just as much as as they can be
influenced to do bad. It's simply better to have any teen under the age of eighteen need to be

the teenagers tame. The adult along with the teenagers would receive the same consequences.
Teenagers attending the mall will have little to no outlet to misbehave. This within itself eradicates

visiting and shopping with friends are major activities for teens. Talking to other shoppers and
enjoying the crowd are surprising preferences of customers (Kang et al., 1999). The friendliness and
conduciveness of the mall to these activities affects the level the mall spending on the part of the

We asked about the ease and safety they felt at the mall, since that was the topic my group had to
focus on (Services and Amenities). Some questions were, "How would you rate your experience
walking in the parking lot at night, in terms of safety?", and "How would you rate the bathroom at
the mall?" These questions allowed our participants to rate on a scale of 1–5, so they have a range of
options to express their opinions.
After all those steps, I learned things from our research on the Hilltop Mall's past. We learned that
the mall was opened in 1976, went through 5 owners, and was foreclosed in 2013 (Fei, 2014). We
also learned that only 16% of Hilltop District residents shopped there (Sciacca, 2016). This made us
wonder why the mall failed, when our Digital Media teacher. Ayesha Walker, expressed to us that
during her childhood, it had been filled with customers and was "the place to hang out" among

My Observation: Queens Center Mall
The place that I observed is inside Queens Center Mall, a mall that most people go to shop or to
hangout. The mall is located on 92nd Street and 57th Avenue. Although the mall is split into two
parts, JCpenney and Macy's, it still consist everything necessarily to make the place a fun and
exciting outlet for people to walk around. Between the two malls, there is a bridge that people could
walk on to get to the other side of the mall. In that bridge, there are all sorts of rest areas for people
to sit down. Also, there is a five large tall bamboo stick that is by the window. In the spot where I
was going to observe, there was a lot of food places to buy. There is starbucks, and a pretzel stand.
The spot by the window was a perfect spot for people to really hangout and talk to each other. By
the window there is 5 bamboo stand, and that seemed to bother me a little, but for some not so
much. There is an actual seat for people to sit on but they refuse and rather sit by the window. I got
to interview two young fellow that was a high school students. I went up to them and asked "why do
you choose to sit there and not at the chairs," they said it is because sitting by the window is more
relaxing and they feel that they have a sense of privacy because of the bamboo. I asked them next ,"

I pranced myself across the parking lot off the mall with a grin on my face because my parents were

playground equipment, I bounded over the playground with wide strides with a wide grin on my
face at the climbing wall. There was a couple of kids at the bottom of the climbing wall, I didn't pay
too much attention to them. There were also kids just like me climbing the wall with skill and
dexterity. I was determined to ascend the top of the climbing wall before them.
I scaled the wall faster than I have ever thought possible. In doing so, I was reckless, my feet placed
themselves where I thought was a climbing rock. My other foot immediately relocated itself and I
lurched to the right and my feet displaced themselves. I found myself no longer on the climbing wall

However, this model has not changed or adapted very well over time and while this design is poor in
suburban strip malls, where the linear progression takes you in a single direction rather than
encouraging a casual shopper to explore, it is detrimental in urban areas where the original strips
existed. For example, the Los Angeles urban strips are close to and have easy access to a potential
shopping base, but the social environment discourages shopping. As the city expanded, the area
around these strips became home to low–income housing, and the public areas were quickly taken
over. The population of the area that was surveyed showed a strong desire to use the space, but
noted such hazards as gang activity and a distinct lack of comfort for pedestrians (Loukaiton–Staris,
1997). Largely the people in Loukaiton–Staris's study wanted a place that was pedestrian friendly,
incorporating things such as seating and greenery, in addition to larger walkways and space for foot
traffic. Pedestrian–friendly strips serve as a major attraction to customers, and the design of these
heavily influence consumers in their shopping choice. Referring to a strip as "pedestrian–friendly"

In the early 1960's and 1970's, shopping mall had gained popularity as a tool to revitalize derelict
and abandoned areas within urban core. Shopping mall was built to rejuvenate downtown main
street or a once popular traditional shopping street. In the later period of twentieth century, there was
a lifestyle shift whereby customers were increasingly demanding and knowledgeable and expected
better shopping environment with better service and interaction. Shopping mall was expected to be
accommodating for their needs of basic necessities as well as leisure. In the 1990's, the idea of urban
entertainment center which combined shopping and entertainment had become very popular and
adapted worldwide. The thematic shopping mall began to exist sporadically providing new form of
shopping and promising satisfying experience to the consumer. The mall was another kind of what
was called 'Design Storytelling' which derived from the outgrowth of the relationship between
entertainment media and retailing and the results was depicted through very lively environment
created from the design fusion of forms, colors and sounds that would dazzle the senses. The interior
treatment was meant to create conducive shopping environment with good ambience and would
effectively engage shoppers senses.

The Mall Of New Jersey
This first time I remember walking through the mall in New Jersey I was a little girl holding my
mother's hand. This mall is a dismal place, with one level and one major department store on each
end. The elongated brown brick walls made me feel like I am walking into a dungeon, into the land
of the abyss. It was not a joyous place for a child to visit. On one occasion, my mother brought me
an ice cream cone and with one lick it was on the floor. I never saw my mother so mad before; she
picked up the ice cream and demanded I receive another one. Little did I know that this dark dreary
space was going was my future place of employment. The mall was not a place I hung out at as a
teenager, first, it was too far and second we had a downtown to shop. While I was away at school
they remodeled the mall and expanded the space into a mega palace to include four levels of bright
lights, white walls, shining floors, glass elevator and a skylight. The mall added a movie theater,
bookstore, hair salons, restaurants, food court, computer stores, post office, and fitness center, just to
name a few minor changes. I was speechless, walking around the same mall as I did as a child with
amazing like Charlie in the Chocolate Factory. The mall played two major points in my life, the time
I spent with my mother as a child trying on clothes wishing we could afford to buy and my job

baby–sitters William Kowinski has written the article "Kids in the mall: Growing up controlled", to
highlight the ignorance of parents that exposes children to artificial environment of shopping malls.
Kowinski argues that this exposure converts children into "pre–programmed consumers" and leads
them to a premature adulthood, which affects their emotional development. To prove his argument,
the writer relies upon several studies which reveal the importance of the role parents play in

To prove his argument, the author refers to David Elkind's (a psychologist) study "The hurried
child". According to Elkind this "hurried child" is under a constant pressure to buy branded
products, and is forced to act like an adult and hold a level of sophistication that is beyond its years.
"Adolescents about to make a big leap into growing up crave more structure than acknowledged."
Kowinski claims that it is usually the parents who encourage children to spend time in the malls as
they consider malls to be much safer, and a rather "controlled environment". To support his
argument, the writer relies upon a study under taken by Karen Lansky's. This study insists on the
fact that kids observe and learn; if they are nurtured at home, they would learn about responsibility,
but if they have malls as a "structural mother", all they would learn is how to act like adults and
"how to consume." Hence parents should pay more attention to grooming their children themselves
instead of letting the malls "be the baby–sitters". Apart from their role as shoppers, kids also tend to
find jobs which might teach them how to be responsible but narrow the scope of their success.

Shopping malls are not meant to be sinister. And, yet, in 1977, Georg A Romero chose to film
sequences of Dawn of the Dead, his cult horror zombie movie, in a deserted mall. Shorn of life and
light, the great echoing chambers of the enclosed shopping center took on a very eerie tone.
Curiously, Romero's set design has much in common with the ever–increasing number of abandoned
malls strewn across the United States. There are well over a hundred of these lifeless concrete and
steel behemoths sprawled beside freeways on the fringes of far–flung American suburbs. Economic
decline in certain areas − notably the mid–West − combined with an accelerating trend towards on–
line shopping and new forms of urban shopping centers have pushed the once seemingly invincible

Malls are an integral part in the lives of America. They are shopping centers that have created a lot of buzz in many writers. This is because we have more malls in America than high schools.
