races, and religious backgrounds. Religion plays a major role in patient care and has for many years.
Cultural competency is a major component of nursing practices. Understanding culture is imperative
in knowing what is important to a patient and how to address his or her healthcare needs.
Understanding culture is also important when determining what suggestions to make about
interventions for treatment. Culture is defined as many people interacting and sharing with one

Ever had your door knocked on by people from the church? Ever been harassed in a very persistent
way by the people who are supposed to make you feel comfortable about the Bible and religion?
Well those people are, previously known as "Russellites", but now known as The Jehovah's Witness
church. Many of them have a rough reputation of being pushy and annoying to many. They are a
sect that originated out of Pennsylvania in the 1870s as a Bible class led by Charles Taze Russell
(Slick). Russell had a difficult time dealing with the doctrine of eternal hell fire, and in his studies he
began to deny punishment for eternity, and the Trinity, the Deity of Christ, and the Holy Spirit. He
believed that the only way to interpret the Bible was through himself, that being very dangerous
because he controlled a lot of what went into the local magazines and newspapers (Slick).
To support their doctrines, the Society has their own translation that fits their church that they public
announce as correct. Not only do they go door to door to preach their beliefs and persuade others but
also they have re–translated the Bible into what they like to call the New World Translation. Their
translation of the Bible is bias to other editions of the Holy Bible, but contradicts bits and pieces of

1. Question: Share some of the background of your interviewee (or couple). What was this
person's/couple's story? I interviewed a woman name Jodi. This was an amazing interview that I
made with a couple. This interview was quite educational, challenging and rewarding. Through this
interview I expanded my knowledge regarding cultural factors that can helpful for the couple in
order to form their identity in a unique way. The couple traced their historical background back to
North Canton Ohio. Jodi is a 34 year old beautiful stay–at–home wife, with two wonderful sons
named Brett and Justin and is happily married to her best friend Pete of 14 years. Jodi is also a
Jehovah Witness. Jodi and her whole family are of the Jehovah faith. Jehovah's Witnesses beliefs
learn that baptism by total immersion is the representation of someone life in the way of God. Jodi
has one living siblings and one deceased, both parents are living and actively involved in their lives.

As a result, fellowship, prayer, Bible study, worship, and most importantly salvation in its purest
form can be discerned and acted upon correctly. In addition, a further understanding can be thus

The purpose of this paper is to identify the characteristics, values and beliefs of Jehovah's Witness
group. It will discuss their reasoning for refusal to accept blood transfusions. The paper will
elaborate on the best approach to offer appropriate care, advice and education while treating patients
with respect in regards to their religious beliefs. British Journal of Nursing (2009) suggests that
good, honest communication, without any element of coercion or scare tactics, is the key in the
management of Jehovah's Witness patients.
A lot of people are unfamiliar with Jehovah's Witnesses (J.W.) population and their religious
believes. As stated in the Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia, J.W., Christian sect, founded
in 1872 in Pittsburgh, Pa., by the American clergyman Charles Taze Russell, with congregations
throughout the world. The legal governing body of J. W. is the Watch Tower Bible (Funk &
Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia, 2014). After researching the values and beliefs of J.W. and
comparing them to Christianity, Professor Watson found quite a few differences (Walston, R., 2004).

The refusal to accept the Hypostatic Nature of the holy spirit is a part of their denial of the Three
Persons. Jehovah's Witnesses don't accept the doctrine father son and holy spirit. They believe that
Jesus Christ is the Archangel Michael. Jehovah's Witnesses don't believe that Jesus was immortal.
They think his mortality came as a prize for his faith toward god. They don't believe like most
christians that jesus was apart of god. He was his person created by god. Jehovah's Witnesses are a
millenarian restorationist Christian denomination that don't believe in the holy trinity which differs
from conventional christianity. This makes Jehovah's Witnesses a sect from christianity because they
still believe in the base teaching of the bible, but disagree with most of the things. It is also more of
a branch from a more present form of christianity. It's focus is solely the bible and they take it very
seriously. The main way for Jehovah's Witnesses to spread the word of god is by going door to door
and trying to convince people to follow their religion. This is how the ideas started many years ago
