2.1.1 The beginnings of performance
Research activity
Many forms of performance began in religious rites and ceremonies. The
tragedies and comedies that are the roots of many modern plays originated in
festivals for the god Dionysus in ancient Greece. Terms such as chorus and
scene were first used in Greek theatre.
Chosen form of performance: Punk Rock
when and where the form originated
Punk Rock appeared in the mid 70’s in New York bands. Bands like
Ramone, Blondie and Talking Heads were playing regularly in Bowery
Distric known as CBGB.
England’s punk rock scene had political and economical roots. At that
time UK was in poor shape and the unemployment rates were at peak.
This is when the youth rebelled and had strong feelings with a lot of
time on their hands.
early examples
Bands like The Ramones, Wayne County, Johnny Thunders and the
Heartbreakers, Blondie and the Talking Heads were playing regularly in
the Bowery District, most notably at CBGB.
People who were involved at the beginning.
Punk Rock was originally used to describe garage musicians in the
60’s. Bands sang and played music without any vocal instructions,
often limited skill (sang to the top of their lungs). Punk Rock bands
didn’t have a clue about the rules of music so the broke them and that
is how they were given the rebellious reputation along with the way
they dressed. Most bands like MC5 and the Stooges were crude, raw
and often political. Punk rock concerts were often violent and opened
the eyes of music world who dressed outragesly.
